I made a digital fan illustration twist I call, Doctor Who: Character Image Songs!
I remember back in the day when I used to watch a lot of anime, I had listened to character song albums. These are official merch for anime shows back then. For example the main character Kyon from 2006 anime "The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya" has his own character song, with lyrics and vibe reflecting his personality. Here's a wikipedia about it.
Initially this was just a graphic design project I wanted to do. But I've never thought to morph it into an album cover until I saw a fan video of Jodie singing Yellow with visuals from the 13th era. I thought the song was very fitting for the Doctor's relationship with her companions.
For this fan art, I decided to use songs the actors have done from their other projects, to make it seem authentic 🤭. I gathered what I find the best I could for the each New Who Doctors. The Tenth, Twelfth, and Thirteenth Doctors were sorta easy, but finding for the Ninth, Eleventh, and Fifteenth Doctors proved to be a little difficult.
I discovered that Christopher Eccleston had very limited content online for his singing and so found two 'songs' with his voice. One was "Get It Out", a plot-device sung roughly by his grizzled character ("Strumpet"). There was also one I found from "Lennon Naked" but it was only for a few seconds. On between those two choices, I picked the former. I don't even know if the lyrics could fit the Ninth Doctor, but I can say the shouty delivery of the lyrics was, at least I think, is closer to his vibe.
Matt Smith was in a similar space, as I could only find songs from him as a creepy villain archetype ("American Psycho" stage theatre and a recent horror film). So I just sliced up to the near-perfect lyrics of the former instead 😂
I thought it would be easy when I came for the Fifteenth Doctor's character image song. After all we had his Doctor singing with the goblins and the people in the Devil's Chord. Both songs have Ncuti Gatwa sing with Millie Gibson and or as a part of the ensemble. I ultimately picked what I picked because the song was more joyous which he is.
As for the design, well, it just stemmed from an unfinished personal project I had trying to make that brutalism poster vibe. Looked up some more Pinterest inspirations, took some screencaps (thanks to TragicalHistoryTour, KissThemGoodbye and TBA Gallery), and used the Sherman's Planet Gallifreyan Translation Helper. I didn't use the official Gallifreyan because ArtByBoredom looked cooler in my opinion. Thank you all for reading and hope you like my fan art 🙏
