Lessons In Fire
When your attempts at flirting fail miserably, Nesta and Cassian find it in your best interest to recruit Eris as your tutor in the art of seduction. Eris, always up for a challenge is ready to school his new pupil and transform you, but he soon finds out he got much more than he bargained for.
Pairing: Eris Vanserra x f!reader
Word Count: 8.9k
Warnings: extreme flirting, subtle tension, just fluff, typical smug Eris, Eris pov, just some kissing
A/N: Huge thanks again to @garricktavisfanclub for inspiring this fic randomly out of the blue. This was a fun little dynamic to write.
Eris had faced many challenges in his long life, but never one as intriguing as this.
He studied the female in front of him as he lazed back in his chair, the portrait of casual eleganceâand arrogance, truth be told. His arm draped over the back of the seat, an ankle crossed over a knee.
When his presence had been requested at the Night Court by Rhysand, heâd expected it to be all business. Court dealings, arising threats, ally discussions.
What he hadnât expected was this.
She was fumbling, not meeting his eye. Her nerves showed all over her face and in her body language as she fidgeted. She crossed and uncrossed her legs under the table where they sat. She tucked a loose strand of hair behind her ear before removing it, letting it fall back into place. She chewed on her lip, eyes darting around the room.
One would think he was one of the deadly and dangerous creatures that roamed Prythian instead of a plain fae male, by the way she was acting.
Then again, he was the heir to Autumn, a future High Lord. It was no lie he was intimidating.
âYou want to run it by me why Iâm here again?â
He spoke slowly, lazily, eyeing her the same way.
It amused him that it seemed to unnerve her more.
She sighed dramatically.
âCassian and Nesta seemed to think it was a brilliant idea to recruit you to teach me how to flirt.â
His grin was feline as he sat forward, eyes taking her in, leg dropping to the ground, arms leaning on the top of the table.
âAnd what led them to calling for such drastic measures?â
He wasnât going to let her off easily.
She rolled her eyes, huffing a breath.
âBecause Iâm awkward, shy and donât know how to flirt without sounding like Iâm insulting a male or somehow injuring them.â
âI believe there was an incident too?â
He raised an amused brow.
She glowered.
âYes.â
âFor learning purposes, Iâll need to know. To know how to help you best, of course.â
Heâd already been told by Nesta and Cassian, of course. But he wanted to hear it from her mouth.
âAsshole,â she mumbled under her breath.
âWhat was that, sweetheart?â
She looked like she wanted to crawl into the river this house sat along.
âI said,â she huffed, âI was attempting toâŠengage a male I found nice looking at Ritaâs. I stumbled over my compliments, I think I accidentally insulted him. I second guessed all my smiles because he looked uncomfortable and I ended the night by accidentally knocking a pitcher of ale in his lap when I tried to touch his arm. He called me a fucking bitch and left. Any other time? I stand in stiff and awkward silence.â
Eris had to rein in the urge to wince. It didnât sound any better the second time heâd heard it and he felt sympathy for her because yeah, that was humiliating.
She already looked like she wanted to die.
âLooks like Iâve got my work cut out for me,â he mused.
âIf youâre gonna insult me, IâllâŠhave Rhys mist you.â
Eris sighed. The poor thing.
âDarling, even your insults are uninspired.â
She glowered, folding her arms.
âGlaring isnât going to win most males over,â he chided, âYou clearly wanted to learn or else you wouldnât be here.â
âNesta threatened to throw my book in the toilet if I didnât,â she deadpanned.
âOuch. You mean you arenât here for my charm and handsome face?â
He tsked, shaking his head.
She rolled her eyes.
âI hate that Iâm starting to see their point.â
His brows raised.
âCare to elaborate?â
âThey said flirting came as easy to you as breathing. Iâm starting to see that.â
A wicked grin spread across his face.
âOh, honey. Iâm not even flirting with you. If I was flirting with you, youâd know it.â
Another sigh, her shoulders slumping in defeat.
âWill you please just help me?â
âIâm here arenât I?â he motioned to the room he was sitting with her in, at the River House, in Velaris.
âEris, I swear to the Mother.â
âCalm down, sweetheart. Donât you worry. Iâll turn you into a temptress yet.â
He knew he could, too.
âI donât want to be a temptress. I just donât want my default to be a bumbling idiot anymore.â
âThat is quite your calling card,â he chuckled.
âDidnât I say something about the insults?â she snapped, unamused.
âAlright, alright, Iâll focus. What you need is confidence.â
âSays the male that has it in leaps and bounds. You could replenish Prythian for centuries with it if your confidence was elemental magic.â
âFunny you say that. Iâve had some females compare my charm to such things.â
He had to bite back a laugh at her exasperation. It was just too much fun teasing her relentlessly.
âAlright, tell me what youâd do if you saw an attractive male and wanted to go talk to him.â
âBold of you to assume Iâd talk to them in the first place.â
âWell, this is a promising start,â he sighed.
âI mean most of the time if I do itâs because Feyre or Nesta or Mor has pushed me into it. Thatâs why I approached that one male the other night because all three hounded me and wouldnât leave me alone until I did. You see how that went.â
âBecause youâre trying too hard,â Eris shrugged a shoulder, nonchalantly.
âWhat?â
Her brows furrowed.
âYouâre thinking too much, too in your head.â
âOkayâŠand what do you propose oh wise one?â
Her retort dripped in sarcasm and he smirked. Bantering was close to flirting.
Maybe she wasnât entirely hopeless after all.
âFirst thing you should know. Males love a female with confidence. They like not always having to be the one to make the first move. Compliment them. Keep eye contact. Simple things to have them eating out of the palm of your hand.â
She seemed wary, as if he was throwing too much information at her all at once.
âShow me how you look at a male when youâre flirting with them,â he commanded.
âIâŠâ she hesitated.
âShow me,â he repeated.
So she looked at him.
He didnât go easy on her either. His stare cut into her. He also knew the art of a good stare down.
She met his amber eyes hesitantly and barely lasted two seconds before they cut away and she started fidgeting again.
âWell, that was pathetic.â
She groaned, dropping her head in her hands.
âIâm hopeless.â
âMaybe. But you wonât be when Iâm through with you.â
She looked up at him.
âAre you ready for your first lesson, sweetheart?â
âąâąâą
LESSON ONE
âTo begin with, I want you to maintain eye contact with me while we converse.â
âHavenât I been doing that?â she asked, sounding exasperated at the inane instruction.
âNo. Youâll look at my face, but you wonât make eye contact with me. Or youâll look elsewhere. The table, your hands, over my shoulder. You need to practice the confidence in maintaining eye contact with a potential male youâre pursuing.â
âSoâŠwhat do I say?â
Her eyes struggled to meet his, but they eventually did.
âJust keep talking to me. Donât worry about any flirtation. Weâre focusing on strong eye contact first. Stare me the fuck down.â
She was already squirming, fighting the urge to look away.
âYouâre making me nervous.â
âHow come?â
He tilted his head curiously, never breaking her stare, red hair falling forward over one shoulder.
âBecause itâs like youâre looking into my soul,â she huffed, still hanging on.
He hummed.
âI am known to be intense with my eye contact. All the better to train you under. At least itâll prepare you.â
âFor what?â
âFor when a male is hooked and interested. Theyâll be just as intense as I am now.â
That caused her face to flush and her gaze to fall away.
âCongratulations. You lasted all of a minute.â
She scowled.
âWeâll come back to that. Letâs move on to lesson number two.â
âąâąâą
LESSON TWO
âAlright, give me your best opening line. Pretend Iâm a male youâre approaching. What would you say?â Eris asked.
âIâŠI donât know?â
âClearly you have to have something. What did you tell the male you approached at Ritaâs?â
âUmâŠhi?â
âDid you say it specifically that way or just the âhiâ? Because both are severely uninspired, darling,â he said simply.
âI said hi. What else am I supposed to say?â
âSomething witty, something cute. Nothing too cheesy and no pathetic lines,â he listed.
She groaned.
âThis is impossible.â
âOkay, let me demonstrate then. That easy enough for you?â
Her lips pursed at the thinly veiled assumption she was that dense. It wasnât what he meant, but he had other important things to deal with currently.
âAlright, pretend I just approached you at the bar where youâre sitting. Iâd casually slide onto the seat next to youâgracefully, of courseââ
âOf course,â she mumbled.
Eris just shot her a look before continuing. He stood, grabbing the back of his chair as he carried it over closer to her, where he sat down next to her.
âSo Iâd sit like this.â
He sat down, hand purposely landing on the table right next to hers as he sat, hand just barely brushing hers. He looked at her with the devastatingly crooked smile heâd known to make the underwear melt off of most females.
âI thought Iâd come get a drink, but I tend to get distracted easily. You look more enticing than any of the drinks on display, anyways."
He leaned closer, not too much, maybe a quarter of an inch, just to show his apparent interest.
Her nose wrinkled, which he had to admit, wasnât the typical reaction he received.
âIsnât that just a line?â
âMaybe straddling the fence of being one. But itâs never a line when I mean it. Itâs also a compliment to the female,â he explained.
She still made a face at the example, regardless.
âWhat would you say back to me?â Eris prompted.
âUh thanks?â
He groaned, head tilting backwards between his shoulders.
âYouâre killing me here, sweetheart.â
âI donât know, really! Itâs like my brain malfunctions and I have no idea what to say or do. Or even what words are half the time.â
âOkay, I guess weâll be coming back to this one too, at a later date,â he sighed.
She just looked miserable.
âMan, do I have my work cut out for me,â he said.
âąâąâą
LESSON THREE
âSo weâre definitely lacking in the comments and eye contact fields, so I want to focus on the body.â
âAlrightâŠâ she sounded hesitant.
âThereâs nothing deadlier than an appropriately timed tilt of your chin as you laugh or appropriately placed touches. You want to hook him, make him want more,â he said.
âIâm listening.â
âA female holds all the power with a subtle lip bite, body language and proximity. What do you usually do?â
âNone of that?â
âHopeless,â he sighed, âAbsolutely hopeless.â
âThanks,â she replied sarcastically.
âFirst of all, relax. Youâre stiff as a board. Shoulders back, spine straight.â
âIâm not one of your soldiers,â she pursed her lips in distaste.
âNo, but if you pay attention and learn well, youâll be able to knock even one of them off their feet,â Eris drawled.
âAlright,â she sighed, straightening her back, shoulders going back.
âOkay, give me a giggle and hit my bicep.â
She stared at him, âWhat.â
âIâm telling you! Thereâs nothing more powerful than a breathy little giggle and a hit to the arm. It lingers in a maleâs mind.â
âOkay, hit the bicep. Got it.â
âI know we havenât mastered comments yetâor anything else for that matterâ,â he mumbled the last part to himself, earning him a dirty look from her.
âBut I want you to pretend I just said something funny. Tilt your chin just slightly and giggle.â
âIâŠwhat?â
The poor thing looked so lost so he decided heâd help her out.
One of his arms stretched out along the back of her chair as he leaned forward, lips near her ear. His voice was soft but deep and alluring as he whispered near her ear.
âThe secret to flirting is pretending youâre charming. Lucky for me, I was born devastating, so Iâve never had to try.â
A breathless little laugh escaped her. More nervous than it was flirty, but it was a start.
He sat back, looking pleased.
âWell, you might just learn something after all, pet. Now just practice hitting me.â
He wasnât prepared for the hit that came even with just a hit from the back of her hand as she smacked it.
âCauldron!â he hissed, rubbing his bicep, âYou want to leave a lasting impression, not a lasting bruise.â
Sheâd hit his muscled arm like sheâd been personally insulted by it.
She sighed, pinching the bridge of her nose.
He knew the feeling.
One step forward, two steps back.
âąâąâą
LESSON FOUR
âLast lesson of the day. Letâs work on compliments.â
âAlright,â she said.
âDonât overdo it and gush. One well-timed compliment can be more deadly than a hundred empty ones,â Eris instructed.
She nodded, listening to him.
âCompliment me.â
He probably shouldâve felt insulted with the way she looked him over and sat thinking for far too long. His lips quirked and brows raised in amusement, though.
âYouâre not as insufferable as you seem,â she finally said.
He barked a laugh, surprised.
âOkay. Not exactly the best, but at least youâre honest. Thatâs better than nothing. Try again.â
Her eyes scanned his face and he sat, waiting, amused with what she might voice next.
âI like your freckles. Theyâre cute.â
That made him pause.
âThanks,â he rasped, âYeah, that was good.â
He eyed her, curious.
There just might be some promise to her, yet.
âąâąâą
LESSON FIVE
The next time he met with her, he decided to lay some ground rules.
âI realize this is probablyâŠembarrassing to be insulted by me left, right and sideways.â
She glowered.
âBut you need to relax. Youâre holding back and overthinking. Youâre clearly not comfortable with me.â
âBecause you keep mocking me or making fun of me!â
He had to give her that.
He also realized heâd probably thrown too much at her too soon. She was clearly out of her depths and not confident in her abilities. Eris wanted to work on that before revisiting any of the topics heâd broached during their last meeting.
âOkay, Iâll try to rein in the remarks,â he promised.
âSomething tells me thatâs going to be quite the act of restraint,â she snarked.
He had to chuckle. She was sassy when she felt like it. An idea sparked, but he tucked it away for the moment and kept it in his back pocket.
âWhat I want you to do today is open up your body language,â he said simply.
âCome again?â
âYou want to look approachable. If youâre tense and self conscious, one is able to read it all over your face and body language. Itâs not exactly a turn on.â
She slumped, biting her lip.
âThatâs not to say it canât be fixed. You gotta believe in yourself darling. Act like youâre buying what youâre selling.â
His fingers steepled as he sat forward in the chair, elbows on his thighs. No table separated them today, she just sat in a chair opposite of him.
âBut that just makes it sound like a game and that youâre not being genuine. Thatâs not my thing and I donât want to do that,â she frowned.
âFlirting is a game, but not the kind youâre thinking. When youâre really into itâinto the maleâit will be genuine. Youâll want to continue to impress them, keep their attention on you. Itâs a chase, but itâs fun.â
âClearly or else it wouldnât be your natural born tongue,â she replied dryly.
Something sparked in him, seeing his opening. He was sure his eyes twinkled.
âSome are just born with natural talent, sweetheart.â
âSo itâs a natural talent for you to be an annoying asshole too?â
His impish grin grew as he observed something in her.
Interesting. He decided to poke just a little.
âNever denied I wasnât. Why? Does it attract you?â
He was cool, calm, but the insinuation and flirty edge was razor sharp in his words, his tone.
âNo, itâs insufferable. Sort of like you,â she stared back.
He sat back, proud with what he just witnessed.
âNow that was a passable effort. Good job.â
She blinked like she had no idea what he meant, looking more than a little confused.
âWhat are you talking about?â
âBantering with me just now made you relax. You werenât thinking about what your body was doing or what you were saying. It came naturally.â
She looked skeptical.
âI wasnât bantering with you.â
He chuckled, deep and amused.
âOh, but you were.â
âOkayâŠso how do I recreate it then? What if that was just a fluke?â
âConfidence, pet. I mean youâre a passably attractive female. Flaunt it.â
âGee, thanks,â she uttered sarcastically.
His lips almost twitched in humor.
He mightâve downplayed it a bit. She was a stunning female, there was no doubt about that. He could only imagine what sheâd become when she actually believed in herself.
But, he wasnât going to throw compliments her way just for the sake of boosting her confidence. She was worth more than a maleâs opinionâor anyoneâs for that matter. She was worth more than othersâ opinions being the sole basis for her confidence, as well.
She needed to learn that on her own though.
âWhen you relax, you want to lean more into the person. Body facing towards them.â
He stood, walking over to the chair she sat in. He leaned a hand on the arm of the overstuffed seat, identical to the one heâd just been in a moment prior. He bent his body towards her in one smooth motion, graceful, eyes locked on her as he spoke.
âYou want to learn how to be as good as I am?â
Pride surged in him as she kept eye contact longer than she had the first time. She nodded.
âJust think of it as having a conversation. This is just a more playful, fun conversation.â
Her gaze didnât stay locked on his as it roamed his face, but at least she didnât balk, didnât shy away.
âOkay. Can we try again?â
She looked ready to learn.
Eris, was ready to teach.
âąâąâą
LESSON SIX
âShall we return to our first lesson in eye contact?â
Eris had perched on the same arm of the chair heâd just leaned against, arms crossed as he looked down at her. Sheâd shifted so her back was touching the opposite arm as she faced him.
âHold the contact, donât waver,â she said.
He hummed.
âSomething like that. Stare me down, sweetheart.â
She did.
âDo you just insist on calling everyone sweetheart? I have a name you know.â
Eyes were still stubbornly on his. He gave her a saucy grin.
âI donât ever recall calling Rhysand that. Cassian or Azriel either,â he teased.
Unamusement shone in her eyes.
âAgain, I have a name.â
âMm, but sweetheart suits you.â
âCocky bastard suits you, but you donât see me calling you that,â she quipped.
He tipped his head back, laughing, being the first of the two of them to break eye contact. He was pleasantly surprised at her candor.
âYouâre improving. On to the next step.â
âąâąâą
LESSON SEVEN
Eris wanted to act out a scene like she was approaching him to flirtâto test out her opening lines.
He wasnât very hopeful considering the first time theyâd done this exercise just a few minutes prior her line was so bad even she had cringed.
âYou look like trouble. Which is why I should probably stay away from you, but here I am.â
Heâd groaned, dropping his head onto his folded arms where heâd leaned against the mantle. When heâd lifted his head to see her wince, he couldnât even resist his critique.
âSweetheart, that was terrible.â
Sheâd huffed and stomped out of the room to enter it again.
Now, whether it was an act of stubbornness and defiance or her just trying to prove him wrong, she stood in front of him, determination in her eyes.
âI was told to start with a compliment, but something tells me youâre the type that already knows how devastating you are.â
Eris was momentarily speechless.
The delivery could use some work, considering she sounded more tense and annoyed, but the line?
He chuckled, impressed.
âWeâll work on the delivery, but color me impressed, darling.â
âąâąâą
LESSON EIGHT
âOkay, so we briefly touched on the laugh and the playful hitâwhich by the way weâll be coming back to. Donât think I forgot how much work that needsââ
âYes, thank you Eris for reminding me just how horrible I am at this,â she sighed.
âI didnât say horrible,â he crossed his arms, lounging lazily back in the chair heâd started in, âYouâre improving. At a glacial pace, but itâs better than nothing.â
âDo you ever come with any actual compliments or are they just all thinly veiled insults?â she huffed.
He snorted.
âBelieve me, pet, my true compliments may be few and far between but that just means theyâre worth working for.â
He winked at her and she sighed.
âAlright. Whatâs the next focus?â
âYour smile.â
âMy smile? What about it?â
âWe are going to practice it,â Eris said, âSmile at me.â
She gave him something slightly resembling a smile.
âI said smile, not wince. You look like youâre in pain.â
âI feel like I am just trying to tolerate your sassy mouth.â
âSweetheart, my mouth is good for a lot of things. Let me know if youâre interested, Iâll be more than happy to give you lessons in that,â he replied smoothly.
âIf I ever need mouth to mouth, youâd be the last person Iâd ask.â
Her words werenât insulting, nor had malice in them, but they were almost playful, a twitch of her brow giving away her amusement.
âEnough about my mouthâalthough we can always keep talking about it if you want? Iâm more than happy to.â
He laughed wholeheartedly when she flipped him off.
âAlright, kitten, give me a smile.â
âI feel like I need a guide to all the pet names that drop from your lips like butter,â she muttered.
âHm,â he hummed, thoroughly amused, âTalking about my mouth again. You wanna try to focus?â
She shot him a look and then gave him a big, wide grin, almost overdoing it.
âNot a beam. A secret smile. You smile like you know a secret they donât and theyâll spend the entire evening trying to figure it out.â
She schooled her features then tried again. A sort of shy, but undeniably sly, tiny smile formed on her lips. She hesitated, her teeth coming down to bite her lower lip.
It had the intended effect and he blinked.
Cauldron, maybe she was a faster learner than Eris had initially given her credit for.
âGood. Okay. Moving on.â
âąâąâą
LESSON NINE
âThis time when you hit me, try not to leave a mark,â he smirked.
âWhatâs the point of this?â she groaned, âIt sounds so dumb.â
âSweetheart, when a female is interested, sheâs playful. Sheâs coy. Sheâs mysterious. A simple laugh and a gentle hit on the arm will undo a male every time.â
She cocked a brow.
âAre you saying this is what attracts you?â
âI have more exquisite taste than that.â
She snorted.
âWhich is code for you like when females fawn at your feet.â
âCareful, it almost sounds like youâre flirting with me, darling.â
That shut her up quickly and that tickled him to no end.
âAlright, Eris. How do I just giggle and hit you? That would require you actually being funny.â
By now, Eris was standing, still arrogantly leaning against the mantel, hands in his finely tailored pants pockets. She stood in front of him, arms crossed.
âTry not to fall in love during the lesson. Itâd be dreadfully inconvenient for you.â
She let out a disbelieving laugh, a breathless sort of exhaled laugh, swatting at his bicep subconsciously, without even thinking of it. This time it was much more gentle, more playful, even. The laughter wasnât a giggle, but it was genuine.
âThere you go,â his eyes gleamed, âProgress.â
âąâąâą
LESSON TEN
âLast lesson for today, pretty thing. Unfortunately I have much more dull things to attend to back home when Iâd rather be here to witness this entertainment, but alas, sometimes heir duties come first.â
âYouâre insufferable,â she sighed.
âAw, sweet words from an even sweeter face. You flatter me, darling.â
âThe lesson?â she motioned, trying to move things along.
âAh, the art of gentle, purposeful touches.â
âYouâve lost me.â
âWhen youâre talking to a male youâre interested in, simple touches like a gentle hand on their arm, their shoulder, hand, it grabs their attention. Keeps it,â he explained.
âSo Iâm just supposed toâŠtouch you?â
âAs lovely as that sounds, pet, you need to flirt with me a little first. I know we havenât had you attempt it yet, but throw something at me, touch me and Iâll assess it afterwards,â Eris said, peering down at her.
He watched her contemplate it, chewing on her lip.
âIs that fire always in your eyes or is that just me that brings it out?â
Her hand was gentle on his arm as she stepped forward, practically looking up at him through her lashes.
Fuck, if that didnât make his throat bob at how affective it was.
âThat wasâŠsurprisingly good.â
âDonât overdo the compliments now,â she rolled her eyes.
âWell donât get too cocky. Youâve improved and passed all my initial tests. Next time? Weâre diving into deeper waters, sweetheart.â
âąâąâą
LESSON FIFTEEN
It had been a handful of lessons since their last, spread out over a few different visits due to their conflicting schedules.
Mostly, it had been Eris running her through everything sheâd learned so farâeye contact, light touches, compliments, gentle laughs, fluttering lashes. That sort of thing.
Now, though, Eris was moving on to more advanced techniques.
This particular subject happened to be one of his favorites and he told her so.
âOh? Why? What is it?â
âUsing your words as weapons, pretty girl.â
âAnd itâs your favoriteâŠwhy?â she asked, dragging out the question.
He swirled the wine in his gobletâhe really shouldâve thought about having a drink every time heâd had a lesson with her, truly. Not that itâd been so bad it drove him to want to drink, but wine loosened his tongue more, made it easier for the sharp words to come as heâd found himself fumbling for odd reasons, here lately. At least the last few meetings.
âBecause itâs a tactic I donât use for just flirtations. It comes in handy as a courtier, too.â
âAh yes, Eris Vanserra, master of the sharp, golden tongue.â
âOh weâre talking about my tongue now? Just a few weeks ago it was the subject of my mouth you couldnât get past, but now itâs my tongue. Youâre a naughty little thing.â
Her cheeks flamed.
âCareful. You blush any harder, youâll set the curtains in here on fire.â
Her gaze burned as she tried and failed to glare at him.
âI just gave you two examples of weaponizing your words.â
She blinked. Blinked again.
âThereâs what I like to call five stepsâor methods, if you willâwhen it comes to weaponizing your words. At least in flirtation, but it could work as a courtier too I suppose.â
âEris. Your point?â
He chuckled deeply, taking a sip of his wine as he watched her, exasperated, seated right next to him at the table they were at.
âObserve, compliment, twist, layer and leave.â
âYou act like those words mean something to me. Youâre going to have to break it down, Heirling.â
He grinned at her.
âObviously. Iâm still taking the time out of my very busy days to come tutor you, arenât I?â
âSo pitiful. Keep it up, I may just have to fall on my knees in gratitude to thank you for being so selfless, Eris.â
Sarcasm seemed to be her second language as much as flirting was his.
Ironically she didnât seem to realize how closely those two were linked.
His eyes blazed with feral delight at the perfect opportunity to pounce onâand demonstrate.
âYouâre welcome on your knees anytime you please, especially if you come in gratitude,â he winked.
Her jaw gaped.
âThat, sweetheart, was an example of layering. But Iâll get to that in a moment. First,â he held up one long, slender finger, âObserve.â
âObserve,â she repeated, dubiously.
âYes, observe. You donât go into a fight immediately swinging. The same goes for flirting. You observe, watch them, note things that will help you know where to strike.â
âLike your fragile ego?â
Erisâs lips turned up in a half smile, but he didnât deign a response.
âTwo,â his middle finger joined his index, indicating his next point, âCompliment.â
âI thought weâve been over this!â
âThat was basic stuff,â he waved her off, âThis is a more involved technique. You donât want to offer up bland compliments or even many of them, not at first. A bland compliment falls flat and isnât memorable. A well timed, cutting compliment will keep the male hooked.â
âSo for instance instead of saying: youâre handsome, I should say: youâre too handsome for your own good, but you know that, donât you?instead?â
His brows shot up, for once unsure if she was just following the lesson orâŠmeant that about him.
He cleared his throat.
âYes, thatâs a good example.â
âIt seems so much easier watching you do it,â she grimaced, eyeing him.
âOh, it is easy for me. Iâve been wooing females for centuries. Sometimes without even words. Itâs a natural gift.â
âMore like a natural pain in the ass,â she mumbled.
âWhat was that?â he smirked, having heard every word.
âNothing. Go on.â
âThree.â
He held three fingers up.
âTwist. You turn their words back on them. You give them enough rope to hang themselves by before you go in for the kill. For example, remember our riveting discussion about my tongue? Which might I add, is very talented if you were curiousââ
âI wasnât,â she cut in, again, exasperation painting her features.
He laughed again.
âAnyways. You practically gave me that material to work with. I just twisted your words back on you in a flirtatious manner. It worked enough to get your attention, didnât it?â
âYes,â she admitted, begrudgingly.
âWhich brings me to four,â he flashed four fingers at her, âWhich ties in to this. Layering. You want to throw in some suggestive remarks? Some innuendo without being downright filthy or come across as too forward? You layer your words with double meaning.â
âSomething youâre talented with,â she mumbled.
âSweetheart, do I need to remind you that Iâm talented at a lot?â
âLayering, Eris,â she redirected him.
âYes, yes. I demonstrated just that with the tongue comment. The comment about you on your knees too.â
His devilish grin hadnât left his face the entirety of this lesson.
âOkay, observe, compliment, twist and layer,â she repeated to herself, âAnd the last? Leave, was it?â
âSomeoneâs been paying attention. What a good pupil you are,â he cooed, borderline mockingly.
Sheâprobably wiselyâchose to ignore him.
âYes. You donât always have to have the last word. Sometimes itâs half the fun letting the other individual believe theyâve won the round, the exchange. It keeps them thinking about you long after you leave. Makes an impression.â
âCauldron knows you live to make an impression,â she remarked.
âAh, I do. That I do.â
He leaned back lazily, watching her process all this information. Not surprisingly, she looked overwhelmed.
âWhat happened to people just being like âHi I like your face, I want to kiss youâ and that being that? Whatâs the point of all these games?â she sighed, frustration mounting.
âYouâre talking to a male who thrives on playing games.â
âPoint taken,â she grumbled, crossing her arms.
âBut also, itâs meant to be fun, sweetheart,â Eris said, tone falling a shade more serious, âFlirting can be fun when itâs done right and reciprocated, obviously. Itâs this effortless push and pull of two individuals and sometimes, when the chemistry is really strong, itâs intoxicating.â
âSounds like you speak from personal experience,â she drawled.
âFive centuries of experience teaches you a lot.â
She was quiet and he just looked at her, expectedly.
âWell? Give me something, Iâm waiting.â
âIâm thinking!â
âThink too hard your brain might melt,â he teased.
âBold of you to say that when itâs already melting trying to survive your suave words and effortless flirting.â
He was smug.
âAre you saying I unintentionally have an affect on you?â
âNo, Iâm saying you try to. You act like youâre the predator and Iâm the prey and you get a thrill out of it.â
He really did.
âAnd what if I want to teach you to be predator and not prey?â
âThen Iâm game. It might be interesting to turn you into the prey one of these days.â
His eyes assessed her, approving. The smile that never seemed to leave his lips lately when he was around herâwhether in amusement, laughter or genuine prideâreturned to his face again.
He assessed the example she just unwittingly gave him. He nodded approvingly.
âYou did well.â
âąâąâą
LESSON SEVENTEEN
âYou want me to do what now?â
âTalk with your eyes,â Eris repeated slowly, âYou know how sexy it is when a female can indicate her intentions without saying a single word?â
âClearly not,â she muttered.
Theyâd been at this for well over a month and a half due to sporadic meetings for lessons. She was improving, though.
Still, there were things Eris wanted to instill in her, that he knew she was more than capable of.
Sheâd already shown him that she could do all the other things heâd thrown at her. Now, with her confidence growing he wanted to go through the last few things he had in mind.
âWell, thatâs why youâre lucky enough to have me as your teacher, sweetheart. Many females would jump at the chance to learn from me,â he added the last half of his statement, a shade smugly.
âMore like many females would jump at the chance to be on you,â she grunted.
âI get plenty of requests to keep me busy. No need to be jealous, I still have plenty of time for you, too, kitten.â
He smiled, falling into the seat behind him, throwing an arm across the back. The picture of courtly arrogance.
âI really am starting to wonder if you even know my name, since you call me everything but.â
Just to spite her, he breathed her nameâmaybe a little more sensual than he meant to and he watched her eyes narrow. But, she refused to rise to his bait, unfortunately.
âTell me, how do I talk with my eyes?â she emphasized, making it sound like it was the most ridiculous thing in the world.
His arms folded, fingers tapping against his bicep.
âSmall things like letting them know youâre interested with coy looks, letting your eyes drop to their lips, even looking up at them through your lashes. Combined with other things like the gentle touch on the arm and a lip bite, youâll have them eating out of the palm of your hand.â
âOr running the opposite direction when I look like a creep staring at them.â
âConfidence, darling. Donât let those thoughts materialize. Come on, practice on me. Come here.â
It was a riskâfor more reasons than oneâbut he decided to tempt it.
Sheâd huffed and was crossing the room from where sheâd just refilled her wine glass, clearly looking like sheâd wished sheâd just snatched the entire bottle instead. That was exactly when Eris reached a hand out, grabbing hers and gentlyâbut in one fluid motionâpulled her into his lap.
All without spilling a drop of her wine.
He wasnât lying when he said he knew how to be smooth.
Without even meaning to, her eyes looked him up and down.
Heâd be lying if he said that didnât send a thrill through him. Even if she was unamused, she was effortlessly falling into the habit of flirting, unlocking things she had no idea she could even do.
Her eyes cut to his, lashes flutteringâwhat he swore was almost innocently, once. Then twice. Then came a lip bite and she hit him with a devastating smile.
He didnât think she even realized it either.
He also didnât want to address the way his heart kicked because surely it was just the close proximity causing it.
One arm wrapped securely around her waist and his own similarly devastating smile answered her own.
âLook at you,â he said slowly, eyes sliding along her.
Her lips pursed but in more of an amused smirk than her typical annoyance.
âWell, thatâs one way to teach a lesson. Care to explain why youâve suddenly become furniture?â
âDarling, Iâd be happy to let you sit on me any day.â
She scoffed, shifting in his lap, likely trying to find a less awkward angle than heâd pulled her down into.
It wasnât just a simple shift, it was her actually squirming.
His hands flew to her hips to still her, gritting through his teeth.
âStop. Moving.â
Her brows rose and she shrugged, moving to stand but his arm tightened around her waist, not letting her leave just yet.
âNot yet. Demonstrate once more before I let you go.â
She heaved a sigh, fingers tightening around the stem of her glass, her gaze falling to his face, peering down at him through lowered lashes. He watched her eyes drop to his lips before returning to his eyes.
âThat good enough?â
He didnât move. Just watched her with that preternatural stillness.
âThatâs perfect.â
âąâąâą
LESSON EIGHTEEN
âConsider this your first real test, pet. Iâll be expecting some of all that Iâve taught you.â
âJoy,â she muttered.
âLighten up, princess. Youâre flirting with me, not going into battle. Try not to look so disdainful.â
âAh, but thatâs where youâre wrong,â she held up a finger to make her point, âGoing up against you orally is a battle in itself.â
For once, Eris held his tongue. Even if he was extremely tempted to jump on that unintentional innuendo.
âYouâve learned about touch, compliments, eye contact, weaponizing your words, flirty laughs and confidence. Now, I want you to put them all to the test.â
âThat is a lot to remember, Eris. The pressure is insane.â
âJust relax. Youâre already panicking before you begin. Why donât we run through a scenario? You pretend youâre approaching me to talk and go from there. Iâll flirt with you, you flirt back with everything Iâve taught you.â
She sighed, walking out of the room so she could get into the right headspace as she entered the room.
He leaned against the wall, amused, waiting for her entry.
Unfortunately, she didnât disappointâŠat least in the entertainment aspect.
âSo, do you come here often?â
Eris groaned, giving her a look.
âNever and I repeat never use that line. Itâs bland, uninspiring and overused.â
She groaned in return and stomped out of the room to reenter and try again.
She was trying hard, at least he gave her that.
The second time wasnât much better.
âI noticed you were lonely and thought you could use some company.â
âNot bad, not great. Sounds too formal and polite, not nearly as flirty as youâre going for,â he said, tilting his head back and forth to make his point.
She frowned, left and entered a third time. This time looking exasperated and put out.
âI donât know, can I buy you a drink?!â
She threw her hands up in frustration, letting them fall down by her sides with a loud smack against the sides of her legs.
âThis isnât working, Eris. Iâm not you. I donât perform well under pressure like you do.â
His head tilted, hair falling forward over his shoulders. He studied her, considering something before he spoke.
âItâs not always easy for me. Maybe you bring out the best in me,â he smirked.
âNow youâre just being exasperating,â she glared.
âSweetheart, I seem to recall you doing perfectly fine under my gaze before. But youâre stiff again. Want me to help loosen you up?â
The dangerous curve of his mouth lifted and he watched with pride as she managed to fall right into the trap heâd set.
Just like he expected her to.
Her eyes gleamed, teeth gently scraping along her bottom lip as she thought before speaking, her eyes prowling the length of him.
When she spoke, it was breathless, confident.
It was flirtatious.
âAdmit it, you just want to get your hands on me.â
âDarling, if I wanted to, no one couldâve stopped me.â
âPromises, promises,â she tsked, âTell me Eris.â
His eyes glanced down at the feel of her smaller hand on his bicep and she leaned on tip toes to whisper her question in his ear.
âAre these really just lessons? Or do you enjoy toying with me this much?â
He nearly shivered.
She returned to the flat of her feet, hitting him with a sly smile.
âBecause you may be good at the game, future High Lord, but I think the score is starting to even out. Donât you think?â
Her head tilted just the slightest, coy, smooth, extremely flirtatious, her hair falling over her shoulder as she bit her lip again and peered up at him.
Eris found his stomach absolutely swooping and for once, was almost speechless.
Then, like sheâd been placed under an enchantment, she blinked, face clearing and returning to normal.
âWas that good?â
He blinked, returning to his cool, unruffled demeanor.
âYou may just be able to charm the pants off a male after all, sweetheart.â
âąâąâą
LESSON NINETEEN
âHow is there even more? I feel like weâve been through everything about ten times now!â
She looked exasperated for this meeting of lessons, surely thinking that their last meet up was their last.
But, no.
There was one more tactic Eris thought she should learn. One that could potentially be deadly in her possession.
âYouâve learned and practiced every other weapon for your arsenal. Now, itâs time to learn the deadliest.â
He strolled in front of where she sat, hands clasped behind his back as he spoke. He stopped in front of her, seeing her raised, questioning brows.
âWhich is?â she prompted.
âThe Triangle.â
âIf youâre here to teach me shapes, I couldâve saved the time and gone to nursery school with Nyx for the afternoon,â she remarked sarcastically.
âCute,â he smirked, crossing his arms.
He took her in, wondering if he was going to regret teaching her this.
Probably.
He was curious as to when heâd started noticing she was rather attractive. Obviously, she always had been with her bright eyes and shy, sweet smile, but heâd awoken something in her. As their lessons progressed, that long hidden confidence had begun to bloom.
Eris almost hated to see what sheâd be like at her fullest potential.
âEnlighten me. Whatâs The Triangle?â she asked, sitting forward in her chair.
He dipped down, hands on resting on either arm of the chair, faces inches from hers as he showed her.
Left. Right. Down. Up.
She leaned backâaway from his too close proximityâlooking uncomfortably confused, brows bunched like she was trying to figure out what he was doing.
âThat explained nothing,â she said, putting a hand to his chest and pushing him back enough to give herself space.
He definitely ignored how that spot on his chest seemed to burn from her touch as he stood fully again.
âThe triangle method is when you go in for the kill, seal the deal. With a kiss that is,â Eris grinned fiendishly.
âYou want me to kiss you?â
Inwardly, he had a much different reaction than his outward one, but he whizzed by that fact with little thought.
âPlease,â he scoffed, âYou should be so lucky. These lips donât come for free, you know.â
âWhat a shame. Iâm sure theyâve been passed around enough to the point itâs a commonly recognized currency now.â
The side of his mouth twitched. She was feisty when needed to be.
âBack to the point at hand,â he redirected, âYou want to be the deadliest when you seal the deal. How do you do that? The triangle method.â
âAre you gonna explain it or continue to be melodramatic?"
âSweetheart, melodramatic is my middle name,â Eris retorted.
âThat along with half a dozen other things,â she mumbled.
He chose to ignore her remark and continued on.
âYouâre going to slowly look at the left eye, then youâre going to look at their right eye. You drop your gaze to their lipsâbonus points if you add a little lip lick or lip bite while your gaze is on their lips, males take in all of that and it drives them wild. Then, you look back up to their eyes. For one, that portrays your obvious interest, what youâre alluding to wanting. Two, it draws out the moment, the tension.â
She gaped at him.
âI swear youâre practically drooling. Itâs funny, Iâve never taken you as one to be into this stuff. You just seem to take what you want and be done with it.â
He shrugged.
âSometimes I do. But sometimes itâs not as much fun when youâre doing all the chasing. Sometimes you want the other person to chase you, which is what Iâm teaching you. Now, demonstrate on me.â
âAlright,â she sighed, âWalk me through it.â
He squatted in front of her chair, arms resting on his thighs, his fingers laced together in his lap as he stared at her.
âOkay, left eye first.â
Her eyes shot to it.
âNo, smoother. More relaxed, less jumpy. You want to seduce, not look like youâre panicking.â
âWhat if I am panicking? Cause I can guarantee I probably will be during the real thing,â she grimaced.
âFake it. You faked being confident long enough with me for these lessons and look at you now, you are more confident. Now, come on.â
He nudged her knee lightly with his hands.
âTry again.â
Her gaze slidâslower, more controlled this timeâto his left eye, then his right. That gaze dropped down to his lips for a beat then returned to his eyes, where he waited, watching her.
He saw the slight hesitation in her eyes, but he just gave her a smile.
âGood job, sweetheart.â
âąâąâą
LESSON TWENTY
For his last lesson, Eris thought heâd have her try out the triangle method one last time, putting it into action.
He wasnât going to make her kiss him, gods no, just pretend she was going to. He wanted to assess her use of this last skill heâd taught her.
Itâd been a few days since their last lesson when sheâd about knocked him clean off his feet at her perfect execution of the triangle method. Thank the Mother that Rhysand had needed to speak with him the other day because Eris couldnât imagine staying much longer after that incident, or trying to function like normal after that had happened.
âToday, weâre going to practice the almost kiss,â he clapped his hands together, âThe triangle and how you move in is just as important as all the flirtation leading up to it.â
âOh joy,â she mumbled, âMore chances to look like an idiot.â
She stood in front of him, arms crossed, already scowling at the idea of the exercise. He put his hands on her shoulders, looking down at her face.
âConfidence, pet,â he reminded her, âNow, come on. Demonstrate. You remember the order I told you the other day?â
âYes.â
âOkay, begin,â Eris instructed, hands falling from her shoulders.
She took a deep breath, squaring her shoulders. She looked up at him, soft determination on her face, in her eyes.
Her gaze started at his left eye, just like heâd taught her.
It effortlessly, smoothly, shifted to his right one.
Then, her eyes dropped to his lips.
Just a hint of her tongue peeked out as she moistened it, teeth coming down to bite it gently before she looked back up at him.
His heart kicked. His stomach twisted. His breath caught.
But she wasnât finished yet.
She leaned up, as if she was going to kiss him and her hand moved past the curtain of his hair, sliding it along the back of his neck. Her head tilted just slightly and she paused, inches from his mouth. So close he felt her warm breath against it when she spoke.
âLike that?â
He was so distracted, his eyes glued to her lips it took him a beat to realize sheâd spoken.
âMhm,â he hummed.
He snapped out of it when she pulled back, hand falling from his neck.
âI did good?â
He nodded, swallowing thickly and watched as she beamed, proud of herself.
Simultaneously without realizing sheâd just shaken him to his core.
âI think youâve just graduated from my tutelage, darling.â
Eris watched the surprise cross her face, like she couldnât believe sheâd done it. Couldnât believe how far sheâd come.
But he couldnât focus.
He'd never felt so flustered in his life.
His mind replayed those quick few seconds. That beautiful face approaching his, those perfect, soft lips so dangerously close to his, her small hand warm on the back of his neck.
And the way sheâd so perfectly executed the technique that it had left him weak. Unflappable, unshakeable Eris Vanserra, weak.
Heâd never realized when heâd agreed to this silly little arrangement how much trouble heâd find himself in. He hadnât minded the idea and had found it rather amusing at first. After all, who better to help her than he?
Now it was he that needed the help.
For heâd fallen for his pupil.
âąâąâą
THE REAL THING
It was well past the setting of the sun, nighttime having darkened the sky hours ago when he approached the building, leaning against it.
Eris didnât know why he found himself here.
Well, that was a lie. He knew exactly why. It was just his luck, heâd arrived at the perfect time to see the reason why walking out the door just then.
She called out to him as she walked over to him.
âEris Vanserra, I didnât take Ritaâs to be your thing. What are you doingââ
She didnât even get to finish her sentence because the moment she stepped in front of him, his hands reached for herâone on her face, pulling it up to his at the same time his hand on her body pulled her closer to him.
Eris kissed her like his life depended on it, mouth hot on hers. His lips parted from hers several times but he didnât pull away because he kept chasing her mouth for more.
He kissed her again and again that first time.
Repeatedly, really.
And she was kissing him back.
He briefly wondered why the hell he was teaching her to begin with if she was this good at kissing.
When he finally broke away for good this time, she looked absolutely stunned at his impromptu heated kiss.
âI canât get you out of my head,â he breathed.
He hadnât been able to. When the lessons had concluded, Eris had found himself wishing there had been more to teach her or that sheâd needed extra practice.
Simply to spend more time with her.
Sheâd gotten under his skin so easily, so effortlessly, he really had no idea when sheâd truly captured his attention.
It had only been a week since theyâd had their last lesson and his biggest regret when heâd winnowed home that afternoon was that he hadnât kissed her. That he hadnât been able to stop wondering what it would be like to kiss her.
Then the realization hit him.
Eris didnât want her kissing any other male.
So, that was what he was doing in Velaris, after midnight, waiting for her outside of an establishment named Ritaâs, hoping she hadnât yet gotten to test out any of her newfound skills.
She had yet to speak, so he continued on.
âHi, I like you, I want to kiss your face,â he repeated her words from weeks prior.
She let out a breathless laugh, realizing he was quoting her exact same words from a previous lesson. Then she surprised him.
Sliding a hand along the back of his neck, she kissed him again. He groaned into the kiss, never expecting it to be so good, but it truly was.
Unfortunately, she pulled away sooner than heâd like.
âI havenât even gotten to practice yet,â she laughed gently.
âOn others or me?â
âBoth. But maybe youâd be interested in me putting them to good use sometime? Perhaps on you?â
Would he ever.
âYou can count on that, darling.â
Once again, their lips met and Eris didnât even care that they were standing outside in the dark. Then he broke the kiss once more, long enough to chuckle against her lips.
âGods, Iâm an excellent teacher.â

Hi! I really love your Alec fanfic (Fire and Smoke). If itâs ok, may I request another Alec Volturi x Reader? Perhaps when Alec was still human in the middle ages? Like maybe an arranged marriage or them being a normal couple before the twins had to be burned? Basically their lives as humans? Thank you so much! đ„čâ€ïž

Fire and Smoke
Prompt: as a universe jumper you just wish people would take your advice seriously sometimes (alt: A witch jumps through a failed portal and accidentally lands in the Twilight Universe after the events of New Moon. Trying to find the way home seems impossible, especially before Breaking Dawn happens. Things donât go as planned, well, Bella doesn't go as planned. Who wouldâve guessed.)
Paring: Alec (19) x reader
wc: 14.8k
Instead of stepping into your living room through the portal like youâd done millions of times before, you fall from the ceiling into a living room thatâs definitely not yours. Groaning, you sit up from where you landed and take in the spacious room and nice looking furniture. You canât quite put your finger on it but something about the room seems familiar, like youâd seen it in a dream.
âUmâŠâ A deep voice says from behind you. There in the doorway, staring at you slack jawed is Emmett fucking Cullen. The only problem? Heâs a fictional character.
âNo fucking way.â You breathe in disbelief, eyes wide. Something is definitely not right. âBut- But youâre not real.â Your heart beat increases in speed as panic sets in over your body. You begin to glance around the room again, hoping that thereâs answers you didnât see before. Thereâs none, just the vague sense of familiarity that you have no business having. âNo, I can't be here.â
âWell I just watched you fall through a cloud of purple smoke from my ceiling, soâŠâ He continues to look at you as if he canât quite believe it either as Rosalie appears in the doorway behind him. Your blood runs cold seeing her, dread quickly joining the panic.
âNo! No no no! Not you too.â You wail threading your fingers in your hair and bringing your knees to your chest. Panic seizes your entire body. You feel like you could puke right now as the room begins to spin. âThis canât be happening. This isnât possible.â Your vision blurs with tears and you feel cold hands touch your shoulder gently. The tears begin to fall as you register the solid weight chilling you through your shirt. Real. They are real and touching you. A sob escapes your throat, an agonizing sound no one should ever make. You can barely hear Emmett explaining how he watched you fall through your failed portal into their living room.
You feel a wave of calm wash over your body instantly freeing you from the growing panic attack. Jasper must be here now too. You lift your head and through blurred eyes you find most of the Cullen clan standing in the living room staring at you in surprise. Rosalie is the one crouched next to you surprisingly, hand still on your shoulder.
âYou didnât hurt yourself when you landed, did you?â Esme stands behind Rosalie peering down at you. You stare up at her with wide eyes, shaking your head slowly.
âHave you met Bella yet?â You whisper trying to gauge where in their timeline you landed. This is so surreal for you, âWhat year is it?â You tug the strands of hair still woven in your fingers trying to use the slight sting to ground yourself.
âWeâve met Bella, yes. Todayâs May 13th, 2006.â Esme smiles down at you and you try to remember what was supposed to be happening. Was this the first book or second book? âYouâre from the future then?â
âThe future? Iâm not even from this universe.â The moment you say it you notice the absence of your magic. The hollow feeling inside of you foreign as your panic starts to increase again. Jasper sends another wave of calm feelings towards you before you can work yourself up too much. âDid I land after James or after Italy?â
âItaly.â Alice stares at you with unabashed interest as you groan in displeasure. âHow did you know?â
âBecause this universe is fictional in mine. The books are pushing 20 years old.â You look down at your palms, trying to call your flames but they never come, your hands not even warming. Your eye twitches and as if on cue more calm floats through your body and you figure Jasper is working double time to keep you sane.
âWait wait. How did you get here?â Emmett asks, pointing to the ceiling where you fell from.
âIâm not sure. Something went wrong with my portal and I landed here instead of my living room.â It doesnât make sense to you, leaving Yelenaâs house and portalling to yours was a very frequent occurrence. Portals are one of the easiest things to master, thereâs no reason you should be anywhere except your own home.
âCanât you just make another one?â Emmett shrugs his shoulders like itâs the most obvious thing in the world. More calm blankets you thickly, panic and dread being held at bay by Jasper.Â
You shake your head, the words feel like lead coming out, âNo. The magic in this universe is foreign to me.â You canât even feel it in the air which is a big problem. If thereâs no magic here does that mean thereâs no way home? You feel your stomach twist and siliva pool in your mouth. Another wave of calmness fights it off, making you feel almost loopy.
âSo youâre a witch then?â Emmett plops himself down on the couch.
Rosalie rolls her eyes at him, âWasnât that obvious?â
âSo you know whatâs going to happen in the future?â Alice is pulling you up off the ground and pulling you toward the couch. The rest of the Cullens present all find a spot on the couch, Jasper leaning against the wall as far as he can away from you but not taking his eyes off of you. Assessing you as a threat or a bomb, you arenât quite sure.
The front door suddenly opens and shuts, interrupting the conversation. Edward and Bella appear in the doorway, Edward with a confused look on his face as to who you are. Bella zeros in on you as well, her eyes darting to you sandwiched between Alice and Rosalie. She looks confused as well but doesnât voice any questions.
âOh good! This is-â Alice stops suddenly realizing they never got your name. She looks to you for help and you supply it for her. âY/N, right. Sheâs from a different universe, she fell into the living room.â Alice says it like itâs the most normal thing in the world. She catches Edward and Bella up, waving them closer to the couch. âOur world is fictional in hers, so sheâs telling us whatâs about to happen.â Edward raises his eyebrows and crosses the room to hear what youâve got to say. Bella doesnât say anything as she comes to stand next to Edward, her arms crossed over her chest loosely. She looks awkward and out of place, uncomfortable almost.
âSometime soon an army of newborns are going to come from Seattle to kill all of you. The wolves help you in the fight but the Denaliâs donât. Then right after the Volturi will show up and threaten you about Bella still being human.â Thereâs a noticeable silence as everyoneâs stunned face turns to look at you to see if you were joking. âVictoriaâs army.â You clarify since they donât really look like they believe you.
âIâve been watching her though, she hasnât made any decisions to suggest that.â Alice furrows her brows, digging through her mind to recall her visions of Victoria.
âYeah because sheâs using some local kid as a cover.â Youâve never been strong in divination before so you arenât your covenâs seer but you wonder if this is what it feels like to know the future. You donât know if you like the feeling or not, having everyone blindly taking your word. What if things change? Yeah you donât like this feeling, unease creeping into the back of your mind. It disappears seconds later and makes you wonder if it was really there or if youâre just losing it.
âHas your house gotten broken into yet?â You ask Bella, her eyes widen and she shakes her head.
âThen you still have a little while to prepare for everything. I should speak with Sam.â You donât offer any more information about it even though it looks like Bella wants to ask. You wish you could remember the timeline better, everything happened so quickly in such a short amount of time. You wonder if the tribal elders know anything about what happened to you.
âYou said the Volturi come? They donât help?â Edward asks you, prompting you to return to your original thoughts.
You shake your head, âNo they donât help. They umâŠâ You pause, not knowing if you should share the next part. âJane meets with Victoria and Riley. They donât take care of them right away because they want the army to win.â
âWhy would they do that? Arenât they supposed to be the vampire police?â Bella asks Edward, frowning in confusion.
âThe Volturi don't like large, powerful covens. Half of us are gifted, theyâve done similar things to other covens in the past.â Edward tells Bella and decide not to add your two cents.
âWe should move up my transformation date. So I can help.â Bella tells Edward matter of factly.
âItâs not a good idea. You being human was the only thing that saved you, Edward and Seth. Victoria and Riley find you while everyoneâs distracted with the main fight. If youâre a newborn they might get ideas about tempting you as a distraction like youâll do to them.â You tell her before Bella can start a whole argument in front of everyone or, god forbid, call another vote. She frowns at you, the displeasure swirling in her eyes but she doesnât try and argue it.
âDoes someone have a computer I could borrow? I need to do some research about the occult in this universe if Iâm going to try and make it home.â Since you canât make a portal like you normally would, youâre going to have to figure something else out. Thereâs no way in hell youâre staying here.
âYou can use Carlisleâs, he wonât mind.â Esme volunteers quickly and you nod your head, mentally listing off things youâll need to research and find. Hopefully you wonât be stuck here after all.
~
La Push is exactly like it was in the movies. It takes a minute to find Sam and Emilyâs house, Bellaâs directions were easy enough to follow, it's just weird not taking a portal. You wouldnât call yourself directionally challenged but actually having to drive and not miss all the turns is a little difficult. Itâs not like you drove very often to begin with, most of the time portals were more convenient. Driving was for leisure or sight seeing, not everyday transportation and even then a lot of people opted for brooms instead of actual cars.
You park Emmettâs jeep in front of the house hoping this goes well. You laugh at your crooked parking job and head to the door. You knock on the door and listen to the footsteps approach. Emily opens the door, a polite smile on her face.
âCan I help you?â She asks, sheâs got a towel in her hands and the smell of baked goods wafts out of the open door. She looks like she did in the movies, friendly and scarred.
âHi Emily, is Sam or any of the boys around? Itâs kind of urgent.â You smile at her hoping not to freak her out too much.
âOh! They are on patrols right now but they should be back soon. Is everything okay? Please come in while you wait.â She opens the door farther and steps out of the way, ushering you inside. Their kitchen is familiar from the movies. âHave a seat, the muffins should be done in a few.â
âIâm Y/N. I know Bella and the Cullens.â You sit at the table, âThings are going to get weird soon.â She raises her eyebrows and nods. You make small talk about baking while she moves around the kitchen. Youâre dying to try one, they smell so good.
Thereâs a commotion outside, several voices yelling at once before multiple footsteps are pounding across the porch and the back door is slammed open. Sam and Jared run into the room, more voices behind them all talking overtop each other. They stop short when they realize itâs just you and Emily in the kitchen, unharmed albeit a little startled at their intrusion.
âWe smelled a vampire and saw the car parked out front.â Sam looks between you and Emily suspiciously, signaling Jared to clear the rest of the house.
âOh, thatâs me. I borrowed Emmettâs Jeep. I need to speak with you about the Cullens.â The rest of the boys file into the kitchen, spreading out to get comfortable. âWhere are Seth and Leah?â You ask, noticing their absence.
âClearwater? Seth hasnât phased and why would Leah be here?â Sam asks confused, heâs never seen you before. He glances at Jake, asking through the mind link if he knows you. Jacob shakes his head, not knowing who you are. You hear Jared reenter the kitchen behind you.
âBecause she phases too? Right before Seth does.â If she hasnât phased yet Harry must still be alive then. A few of the boys give you dubious expressions.
âHow do you know that?â Jacob asks from across the table. âI thought Alice couldn't see our future?â
âShe canât. Iâm from a different universe, one where this is all a fictional story and you are all characters in it. I fell into the Cullenâs living room this morning. I know whatâs going to happen to everyone. The increase in phasing? Itâs because of the increase in vampires in the area, right? Seth and Leah will phase soon because of the red haired vampire youâve been chasing. Sheâs building an army. They phase back to back.â You word vomit at them. No one says anything for a second, they just stare at you with raised eyebrows as they process what you said.
âOkay back up. The red haired vampire is building an army. Start there.â Sam sits at the table and the rest of the boys not already sitting somewhere follow suit.
âOkay so in Tw- last year? Bella caught the attention of some nomads, they tried killing her but the Cullens killed the leader of their group. The red head was his mate and wants revenge. The vampire you killed in the clearing a few months ago was the other member of their group.â You start, Jacob nods his head, verifying in the mind link that youâre correct so far. âWell sheâs in Seattle creating an army of newborns to come here and destroy the Cullens and Bella. They wonât respect your treaty with the Cullens if they win and will probably come for you next since you killed Laurant. They send someone up here to gather some of Bellaâs clothes so they can lock in on her scent and I think thatâs what triggers the Clearwaters to phase.â
âAnd the Cullens? What do they do?â Sam asks, his face serious.
âThey fight. Their âcousinsâ in Alaska donât come down to help. In the books the pack helps in the fight after being trained by Jasper on how to fight newborns. Iâm not here to tell you what to do, Iâm just telling you how things happened in the books so you arenât caught unaware.â You raise your hands in a mock surrender not wanting to come across as too pushy.
âIf we help, do the Cullens win?â You nod your head at Samâs question. âAre any of us hurt?â
âJacob gets hurt covering another pack memberâs back. He heals and makes a full recovery. Thatâs why I came now instead of later. Jasperâs agreed to start training you early to avoid any injuries. If Jacob does get injured, Carlisle will set his bones back in place but it will help if thereâs someone else in the room helping. More so for Jacobâs comfort.â Okay so maybe that wasnât entirely true but if they knew Carlisle runs secret experiments with Jacobâs stolen blood then they probably wonât want to help.
âSay we believe you. When is this army supposed to come here?â Sam asks, his serious demeanor never wavering.
âI donât know. Like a month maybe? Now that Alice is aware of them she can watch the timeline better. IÂ donât remember if the books gave an explicit date.â You shrug, itâs really not your problem anymore. Now that everyone knows you can focus on finding a way home. Looking back, youâd laugh at how untrue that statement will become. You rise from your seat, ready to leave but pause at the door. âIâll let you guys talk about it. Someone should let Harry know about Seth and Leah though, he has a heart attack from the shock and doesnât make it.â
~
As youâre driving back to the Cullensâ house you see Rosalie waiting on the side of the road. She waves at you, appearing next to the car when you slow it to a stop. âHop out, Iâll drive.â You smile at her, grateful because youâve come to the conclusion you really hate driving.
âAlice said you were planning on asking if someone could take you to Port Angeles. I need to get some parts for my car anyways.â Rosalie said climbing into the driverâs seat after you crawl over the center into the passenger seat.
âYeah, I wanted to go to the bookstore. See if I could find a deck of tarot cards and maybe some occult books. I wasnât my covenâs seer but itâs worth a try. If they have any crystals I can try to meditate with them. Or maybe if I can astral project to my universe and tell my sisters where I am, maybe they could open a portal for me. The magic in this universe is a lot more archaic than mine I think.â You explain your thought process to her. You just hope itâs as doable as it sounds.
âDo you think youâll be able to? Go home, I mean?â Rosalie hesitates to ask.
âI hope so, I know I donât belong here. Becoming a vampire isnât really high on my list of desires either and Iâm afraid the longer I stay here the more likely it is Iâll have to get turned. I wonât be able to avoid the Volturi forever.â Rosalie looks over at you, a soft look in her eyes like she understands. Which you guess she does, she wouldnât have chosen this life for herself either.
The rest of the car ride is spent in a comfortable silence, the scenery enrapturing you. Rosalie drops you off at the bookstore, telling you that sheâd be back in a half hour to pick you back up. The book store is dimly lit and you wander to the spiritual section hoping they have something you could use. They do have a generic set of tarot cards and a handful of different books. Most of them look like duds but thereâs one about astral projection and another on mirror scrying. Both of those look promising. They donât sell any crystals but thatâs okay. Flipping through the book about scrying gives you hope that maybe youâll be able to speak with Yelena or one of the other girls after all.
Rosalie finds you still flipping through the books and laughs when the store clerk refuses your silver nuggets as payment. Itâs not your fault thatâs the only thing you had in your jacket pocket from your bet with Lillian when you fell into this universe. Rosalie pays for your two books and tarot cards and the two of you head back to the Jeep.
âAre you hungry? We can get something for you before we head back to Forks?â Rosalie offers, surprising you. Sheâs a lot nicer and more thoughtful than in the books. Probably because Bella narrates them but still.
âThat would be awesome, I donât even know how long itâs been since I last ate.â You give her a sheepish smile. âIâm fine with anything. Oh, is that a hot dog cart? Can we go there?â
One hot dog later and the two of you are back on the road. The wind whips your hair around while Rosalie drives back to Forks. You happily eat your hot dog, taking in the scenery like you did on the drive out. The moment feels surreal to you and you find yourself wondering for the thousandth time how this is your life.
~
The small mirror you borrowed from Alice sits in front of you as does the book you got in Port Angeles. Youâve spent hours trying to see anything with no luck. The tarot cards you got a few days ago were a bust, they kept telling you contradictory things. This is such bullshit, you think to yourself. Thereâs not a clairvoyant bone in your body it seems. The herbs you burned have done nothing but irritate your eyes and make you smell like smoke.
The famous meadow is peaceful, something you thought would help you to no avail. You lay back, closing your eyes, trying to clear your mind of the frustration and confusion. Staring into a candle flame didnât work either, the element youâre so familiar with silent and unhelpful. You wonder how youâre supposed to make it home if you canât even make a simple connection.
The birds chirp in the distance and for a moment you forget where you are. You picture yourself in your backyard, surrounded by the flower and herb garden. The smell of the rosemary bush is comforting and familiar. You hear a twig snap but donât open your eyes, forgetting where you actually are and thinking itâs one of your sisters.
You wonder why they havenât come to sit with you. Turning your head and opening your eyes you see nothing but the tree line instead of your back deck. Suddenly remembering where you were, you sit up seeing two wolves. They are sitting respectfully off in the distance, waiting for you to notice them.
âUm⊠hi?â The wolves run off back into the woods while you sit wondering what the fuck just happened. A woman steps from the treeline a few moments later followed by a man and understanding washes over you. âOh, you guys phased. Is your father alright?â
âYes, heâs alright. We wanted to come thank you for having someone warn him.â Seth smiles at you, him and Leah stop in front of where youâre sitting. You stand to greet them so you arenât craning your neck all the way back.
âY/N, nice to meet you guys.â You offer your hand out but Seth swats it away, pulling you into a hug.
âThank you so much.âSeth murmurs in your ear. Leah replaces him, thanking you and giving you a squeeze. âSam said he wasnât going to make it if you didnât say anything.â Leah frowns, troubled by what could have been.
âYeah, the shock of both his kidsâŠâ You trail off, youâre pretty sure it was Leah who set off the chain reaction and you donât want the guilt of what didnât happen to eat at her.
âOur mom is really grateful. She wants you to come for dinner, our Dad wants to thank you too.â Seth smiles, looking between you and his sister who nods in agreement.
âOh! Iâd love to but really, Iâm just glad heâs okay.â Seth whoops at the acceptance, fist pumping and running off back towards the woods. âIâll go let Mom know, Iâll see you later! It was nice meeting you!" And heâs gone. Leah shakes her head in the general direction Seth disappeared into.
âIâll wait at the border so I can show you the way. Six, tonight.â Leah gives you a small smile before turning and jogging after Seth. You watch her go, glad that their father is okay. You wonder again if this is how seers felt when they were able to use their visions to avoid something terrible happening.Â
~
Things get weird very quickly. Firstly, Seth and Leah continue to come around asking you to hang out with them. Which, honestly, is great. Itâs nice to have friends here too. Secondly, Rosalie and Emmett are always around places you are too. Going into the woods? Them too. Going into town for food? They could go for a drive. Hey the games on, come watch with me. Hey Iâm gonna fix my car, come sit with me while I work. You think they are also trying to be your friends? Itâs just confusing. You didnât think Rosalie or Leah would be the friendly type, Seth and Emmett for sure, but not them. You arenât complaining or not enjoying their company, itâs just thrown you off a little bit. Youâre beginning to think Bella is a terrible narrator.
Bella for the most part doesnât acknowledge you much. Her and Edward are often off doing their own thing. She gave you dirty looks when the wolves came to train the other day too. You arenât really sure why she doesnât like you, you haven't done anything to offend her. You and Alice have been running through everything for the battle. You guys give Bella a detailed timeline she needs to follow. Everything is supposed to go perfectly. After the battle you plan on leaving. The Cullens donât have the answers or resources you need to make it home. If New Orleans or Salem wonât work maybe somewhere in Europe will. Alice has assured you they will prevent Breaking Dawn from happening, at least the whole pregnancy thing. You honestly donât care what they do, you just want to be left out of the potential Volturi shitstorm that follows.Â
Every second you arenât working with Alice or hanging out with one of your new found friends youâre consumed by the thought of getting home. Sleeping is difficult, you often find yourself staying up all night to research different ways home. Meditating trying to make connections with someone on the other side during the day when itâs just you and Esme at the house. The tarot cards youâre about to throw in the garbage, they are so useless. The herbal teas youâve been trying to astral project with donât seem to do anything other than increase your trips to the bathroom. Even though you are settling in and making friends here it still feels wrong. You feel like you donât belong here, which is true, but on a deeper level your soul just knows this isnât the place youâre supposed to be. Your fire is gone, your magic is gone, you feel lost. You arenât even having dreams here, no glimpses of home, no one trying to make contact with you. Just lost.
~
âYou did what? Youâre actually fucking with me, right?â You drag my hands down your face in exasperation. You laugh desperately trying to reign in the urge to leap across the room to strangle the brunette staring at you with her mouth hanging open in surprise. âBella, Alice and I literally spelled it out for you. From where to stand, what to do, when to do it, Alice saw it play out perfectly. So why?â Edward opens his mouth to come to Bellaâs defense and you hold up your hand to cut him off. âNo Edward, donât make excuses for her. I want to hear her say it herself.â You level your stare at Bella, forcing her to hold your gaze.Â
âWhy are you doing this? Iâm- Iâm sorry, okay. I panicked.â Bella did the stutter and hair tuck combo further enraging you. You can see her wall of defenses growing behind her eyes and her arrogance reconstructing everything to once again make her the blameless victim of her own stupid actions.
âWhy am I doing this? Bella, Iâm never going to be able to go home now. Because of you.â You ball your hands into tight fists, âDo you know whatâs going to happen when I get to Italy? Aroâs going to see everything. Things Alice has only seen glimpses of because nothing was set in stone until now.â You pause and lean forward, your lips curling back into a snarl. âOnce they know everything they are going to kill me. And then? Theyâre going to come here and kill all of you to prevent everything from coming true. They are going to say because you all knew what was going to happen and still did nothing to stop it, you still chose to break their laws.â
âThey might offer you a choice and we can -â Bella tries to start, proving yet again that she didnât listen to a word you said.
âNOT EVERYONE WANTS TO BECOME A FUCKING VAMPIRE BELLA.â You scream cutting her off. âBelieve it or not, this isnât the fucking the Bella show. I had a life, I had friends, I had a family that loved me. I am never going to see any of them again. Because of you. You had one fucking job and you couldnât even do that right. Congratulations. I hope youâre fucking happy.â You turn to stalk out of the room, to find somewhere to cool down and maybe come up with a way to save yourself. Or jump off the cliff in La Push. That optionâs still there. For now.
âHappy? Why would I be happy?â Bellaâs face starts turning splotchy with embarrassment but the anger building in her eyes reminds you of when she confronted the pack in New Moon about Jacob. Arrogant and wrong.
You stop mid step, slowly turning back to face her. The vampires in the room are all watching with mixed expressions of horror and shock. The Volturi guard who came to inform you of your summons and Rosalie look absolutely gleeful watching Bella get screamed at. âIsnât this what you always wanted? The attention?â The smile you give her is sinister. âOh no, Bellaâs in trouble. Letâs drop everything and rush to her aid. Letâs put our lives in danger so we can save Bella.â You mock her. âPlease be so fucking for real for once in your life. There was no reason for you to go off script. There was no reason you needed to fucking name me to the Volturi. But we both know why you did it. So just admit it.â
Bella leaps to her feet and balls her hands into fists at her side. Her face pinches in anger before turning and storming towards the stairs, probably to make her escape to Edwardâs room. Heâs at her side in an instant, giving you a dirty look. Fucking prick. Everyone listens as she stomps through the house, slamming the bedroom door open and it softly shutting behind Edward.
You turn to the rest of the Cullens, âAlice said we needed to keep the future a secret until they leave for the honeymoon so the timeline wasnât altered beyond what we could control. Bella knowing always ended in everyone dying. Alice saw everything happen perfectly but telling everyone too early always made something go wrong.â Your mouth pinches in frustration and you look towards the window, the setting sun casting a golden glow into the living room.Â
âThe futureâs very unclear now. There are too many possibilities until more decisions are made,â Alice murmurs next to you. The two of you agreed shortly after you fell into the living room that avoiding Breaking Dawn all together would be safer than risk letting the events play out. There was a long silence, no one knowing what to say. You wish the portal wouldâve just dumped you into the void instead of ending up here.
âHuman, we must be going soon.â Felix speaks for the first time since entering behind the Cullenâs when they returned from the battle. You donât turn to look at him but sigh. So much for jumping off the cliffs.
The front door slams open and Leah strides in, not stopping until sheâs standing in front of you and pulling you into a fierce hug. âI canât believe she did that to you.â She mutters, squeezing you a little tighter. âIf you come back, no matter what, we will always be friends.â She takes a step back and looks you over once more knowing this is probably the last time sheâll see you. Her eyes move past you and move back to you before giving your shoulders one last squeeze. Leah turns and leaves as quickly as she came.
Alice takes her place, holding out a backpack for you. âItâll be okay.â She says as you take the bag. She pulls you into a hug, Esme taking her place after. Jasper watches from a little farther away and tips his invisible hat. Rosalie and Emmett are the last two to approach, Rosalie hugs you with a sad look on her face. Emmett doesnât crack any jokes as he hugs you after Rose. The house is silent as you follow Felix out the door. You all know you wonât be returning.
~
The plane ride to Italy is long. Felix and Demitri sit closest to you playing a card game. You can see them side eyeing you every so often and you wonder if they are talking about the living room argument. Thereâs two vampires you donât recognize in the very back of the plane and Jane sits in front alone. The Volturi having their own private jet was not on your bingo card but it makes sense. At some point you fall asleep because one moment you're staring blankly ahead and the next Felix is shaking you awake. You groggily follow them off the plane, trying to rub the sleep from your eyes. The streets are empty as the four of you make your way back to the castle. The two other vampires ran ahead to inform the others of your arrival. The cobblestone streets echo with only your footsteps as you near a different looking plaza than from New Moon. You wonder if the filming location was somewhere else then.
You make your way through the hallways of the clock tower to the underground portion of the palaceâs entrance. Jane disappears down the hole first, followed by Felix. Demetri looks at you expectantly and you sigh before jumping down, cold arms catching you before your feet hit the ground. Youâre led through the dark tunnels by Felix. The elevator you all ride further underground is silent save for the cheery classical music playing in the background. Finally, you make it to the reception area.
The receptionist stands and greets everyone in Italian. A figure wearing a dark cloak comes around the corner. âSister, youâve returned with a snack.â A melodic voice teases Jane and pushes the hood off his head. He looks at you over Janeâs shoulder as they hug, his eyes flaring with something you canât decipher. His eyes donât leave yours when they pull away and it kind of freaks you out. Great, heâs probably thinking about eating me, you think. They both look so different than you imagined they would. More beautiful for sure but judging from the Cullens every vampire is prettier than how you pictured them.
He walks with the four of you to the entrance of the throne room and follows you in when the doors open. The room looks exactly like the throne room from the movies. The princes are waiting for you at their thrones and you just hope they kill you quickly. âAh, the Cullenâs human seer. Welcome dear.â Aro rises from his throne, smiling so wide you think his face will crack.
âIâm not a seer?â You say confused wondering what the fuck Bella told the guard in the clearing.
âAre you saying Isabella is a false witness?â Aro asks, tilting his head assessing you. You donât know what the fuck that means.
âUm yeah? I suck at divination.â You scoff, you canât believe her. Actually, you can. She didnât give a rat's ass about anything other than her single sided, weirdo competition with you.
Aro hums, regarding your confusion thoughtfully. âJane dear, could you clear things up for our guest?â Aro turns to Jane standing off to the side with Alec. Demitri and Felix somewhere behind you by the door.
âWe informed the Cullens we would be returning to check on Isabellaâs mortality. As we were leaving she whispered to Edward that Y/N was wrong about the last surviving newborn and then asked if she had to be turned as well. We inquired about their other human and Isabella told us Y/N knew of future events, which is how the Cullenâs survived the battle. I decided she needed to be brought to you to be examined as a gifted human.â Jane declares obediently.
You groan, face palming yourself hard enough the contact is audible. âThat fucking bitch.â You mutter to yourself. Of course sheâd give them just enough to get you taken here. She probably thought that you would speed up her transformation date if it came out that the Cullenâs had two humans living with them. You stick your hand out for Aro and you wonder if your soul will be condemned to this universe or if itâll hopefully return to your sisters. Aroâs in front of you in a blink of the eye, scooping up your hand greedily. His eyes go distant as he searches through your mind.
âA hybrid child?â He breathes before smiling at you again. âAmazing! It seems Isabella only gave us the glimpse at what a treasure you are. To come from a different universe where we are but a mere story, how exciting. A whole other universe.â He muses thoughtfully before continuing, âAnd a witch, marvelous! Your magic doesnât work here my dear?â His face falls a little when you shake your head confirming before patting your hand with his. âNot to worry.â You donât like the sound of that.
âAro.â Marcus calls uninterested from his throne, he holds his hand out and just like before Aroâs gone and there in a flash. He takes Marcusâs hand before whipping back around to look at you. Thatâs not good. Not good at all. He gleefully cackles and claps his hands together before gliding back towards the end of the dias by the steps.
âYoung Alec here will show you to a guest room you can rest in. My brothers and I have much to discuss from what youâve shown me.â He smiles at you again and you feel a soft breeze, Alec appearing at your side. I donât want to stay here though, you think to yourself.
You turn and follow Alec out of the throne room wondering why they are letting you live. Itâs suspicious and you donât like it. Maybe you can still jump from a window. Alec extends his arm out silently offering it to you after the two of you exit the throne room. You blink in surprise but take his arm, if heâs being polite thereâs no reason not to be polite back. The last thing you want to piss him or his sister off by offending him. Torture is not something youâd like to experience.
âDo you prefer Y/N or is there another name youâd rather go by?â Alec asks politely, leading you at a nice pace through the halls. It surprises you that he wants to know your preference instead of calling you âhumanâ like everyone else has been.
âY/N is fine.â You say softly and he hums to himself before repeating it. You find yourself liking the way he says your name, his voice like the rest of the vampires youâve met has a nice pitch. âAlec,â You start, unsure if itâs a good idea. He stiffens at the sound of his name but you continue, âis there anything to eat here?â His lips twitch when you hastily add, âother than me. I havenât had anything since before I left Forks.â
âAh, yes, Iâm sure Gianna can find something for you. Youâll have to forgive my family for forgetting humans need to eat more often than us.â He continues leading you down the hall, any vampire clearing the way when they see the two of you coming. The decor and artwork in the palace is beautiful, no two hallway exactly the same but all cohesive in the same aesthetic.
Eventually the two of you make it to a hallway with fresh candles burning in the sconces lighting the hall. Thereâs a vampire in a light gray cloak holding a gilded tray waiting for the two of you. âForgive me, I overheard the human is looking for something to eat. I needed to speak with Gianna and thought to save you the trip.â He holds out the tray and dips his head down to not look at either of you. Youâre aware of Alecâs high ranking status among the guard but this is so crazy to you.
âThank you.â You say softly, reaching out to grab the tray but Alec beats you to it with his vampire speed. The vampire who brought you the food is gone the second Alec has the tray firmly in his hands. He pushes the door open with ease and gestures for you to enter first, following you in when you comply. The room is decorated with a mix of deep reds and golds, the beautiful ornate furniture that seems to be a common theme throughout the castle takes your breath away.
You drift to the plush velvet couch wondering how the hell this is your life now. A simple witch, just trying to go home after a coven meeting. Honestly you thought theyâd kill you in the throne room but whatever Marcus showed Aro changed something. You know heâs gifted but you canât remember what it was. It hits you when Alec settles in with you after setting the tray down on the table next to you. Why he of all people was ordered to escort you, why he wouldnât stop staring at you when you got here, why he offered his arm to you, why he asked you what you prefer to be called. No fucking way, you think. It all makes sense now.Â
You groan, dragging your hands down your face, feeling so stupid and blind. You let out a humorless laugh. Alice must have seen it before you left Forks which is why she sent you with a bag. She knew and didnât say anything. Probably because she knew youâd kill yourself before leaving the state and theyâd all get murdered for it. The betrayal burns you to the core. She knew how you feel about becoming a vampire, she knew how desperately you want to return home, how empty you feel without your magic and she still sent you here blind. To save themselves.
âI fucking hate the Cullens.â Is all you say feeling Alecâs concerned eyes on you. And you mean it. Rosalie and Emmett were the only ones to ever have your back. âAnd fuck Bella too.â
He lets out a surprise laugh not expecting the venom behind your words. âYouâre in good company it seems. I too do not like the Cullens or their problem pet.âÂ
You laugh at his sentiment for Bella. âI tried so hard to keep them out of trouble long enough to find a way home. Rosalie, I think, was the only person in that house that stood in my corner against Bellaâs nonsense. I shouldâve known theyâd choose Bella.â You shake your head at your foolishness. âI just wanted to go home.â You whisper feeling despair wrap around your heart.
âItâs their loss if they couldnât see your value.â He pats your shoulder gently and you know heâs right but it still stings. You didnât have to stay with them, you shouldnât have but they sucked you into their problems so easily when you offered a solution. To be fair though, itâs not like you had the means to go anywhere else. No money, no identity, no knowledge of this world. Even staying with the wolves wouldnât have been a long term solution.
âI-â You're unsure of how to start this. âAre we?â You trail off confused and kind of overwhelmed. Mates. You canât get yourself to say the word knowing youâre condemning yourself to this world.
âI was wondering how much youâd figured out. Yes, we are mates.â He says cautiously, you nod your head at his confirmation. He reaches out and gently takes your hand in his. âI understand your desire to return to your own universe but I would still like the chance to know you while youâre here.â
âI donât think I can.â You whisper the words that have plagued you since landing in the Cullensâ living room. âGo home, I mean.â You curl your fingers around his, âMy magic doesnât work here. Thereâs only been a few witches in our history to go through a failed portal. None of them ever returned to us.â You swallow thickly, the last of your words coming out as a strangled whisper. âOr their souls.â He squeezes your hand, unable to find the right words to comfort you. âI just wanted to see my sisters again. Or at least be able to say goodbye.â The last bit of hope you were desperately clinging to drifts away as your tears start to fall. You curl into his side, seeking comfort from his presence which strangely enough helps. He doesnât say anything for a moment, just strokes the top of your hand with his thumb as he holds onto it and offers you his silent comfort while you cry.Â
At some point you must cry yourself to asleep because you are woken to the door being pushed open. You slowly lift your head off Alecâs shoulder and open your eyes to see a blurry Jane. She stops short, surprise written all over her face as she narrows in on Alec still holding your hand. âThe Masters would like to see you brother.â You rub the sleep from your face as you shift around on the couch, releasing him from your weight.
âSister, would you mind keeping Y/N company until I return?â He rises from the couch and gives her a happy smile. She nods her head and steps out of his way as he breezes by to head back to the throne room.
Jane levels a look at you that you canât quite read. âYouâre a lot prettier in person than how I pictured you from the books. I think I like your brown hair better than the blonde they gave you in the movies.â You tilt your head before looking back to the tray of food you had forgotten about earlier. âWill it bother you if I eat? I know you can hear it and I donât mind waiting a little longer.â You look longingly at the small containers of pasta and salad Gianna gave up for you.
Jane raises her eyebrows, surprised at your consideration of her having to hear you eat over your own hunger. She shakes her head and gestures for you to eat, âMaster Aro said you are like us. A witch.â She sits in the chair across from you, looking like she had more to ask but unsure how.
âYes, I was. In my universe magic was the fifth element and easily harnessable. We didnât have to hide like witches did here.â You poke at the salad, continuing, âIâm sorry for what you went through as a human. I thought the trials were made up until I landed here and tried finding a way home. Itâs horrifying how evil humans actually are in this universe.â You scowl, shaking your head. You look up at her, her face hard but her eyes are soft looking at you. You stab some of the mixed greens onto your fork, stuffing them in your mouth quickly. Youâd hoped that if there were others with magic then you could find a way home but every lead you followed dried up eventually. The closest you could hope for were mediums and psychics but all your emails went unanswered. With every day that passed with no response your hope died a little more.
âWhat was it like? My brother and I couldn't control our magic.â She asks, leaning forward in the chair. You swallow your bite of salad thinking how to explain it.
âIt was like an extension of myself, inside of me like another limb.â You smile sadly. â Some witches were stronger in some areas than others which is why covens were so normal. Most of the time it would be the first ability that presented growing up and then the rest would follow. Some people could only wield magic in a certain way, like the healers. Their magic was too pure for destruction. Some people could only wield destruction magic or practice nature magic. It really just depended on the person.â Jane nodded for you to continue. âWhen I was a kid my magic presented itself as I woke up from a nightmare. I woke up screaming and surrounded by fire. Everything in my room was in flames, my bed, the walls, me. I thought I was going to die.â Youâre still able to recall how scared you were. âMy parents were screaming in the hallway trying to get to me. My entire house burnt down that night. My parents were both healers that came from long lines of healers and nature witches so they sent me away to live with some fire witches since they couldnât help me. I never saw them again. I think they were disappointed I wasnât a healer like they were. It took years to finally control it well enough not to burst into flames at any emotional spike.â Jane blinks at you in surprise, clearly not expecting your story to be like hers. You eat more of the salad, letting her process everything.
âYou could control fire?â Jane asks with curiosity written all over her face.
You nod, âTo an extent, yes. I could create it, move it, extinguish it.â You finish off the salad while you think of your coven. âI excelled in offensive magic and alchemy. I could enchant things and create portals. I was actually getting pretty good at transmutation before I ended up here. Our coven wasnât the largest but we made it work.â You reach for the bowl of pasta next, wondering if Gianna made all of this or if she bought it from somewhere. Either way, youâre a big fan of the salad.
âI think my brother and I would have very much liked your universe.â You agree, they wouldâve been very powerful in your universe. She didnât say much more, letting you eat the pesto bucatini uninterrupted. You cross the room after you finish, reaching for your bag wanting to change out of your jeans. You hope Alice sent you with something comfortable and not just high end nonsense. Maybe a gun to blow your brains out with.
âWhat in the actual fuck.â You dig through the bag, finding one outfit and a whole lot of lingerie. âWhat the hell is wrong with her?â You feel Jane peeking over your shoulder looking at the contents of the bag with you.Â
She laughs at you as you turn around wide eyed and beet red in the face. âSo thatâs what the look she and Edward shared in the clearing was about. No wonder they didnât put up a fight when we said weâd be taking you.â Your mouth falls open in shock. You really shouldnât be surprised they both knew and didnât tell you. Fuckers. Absolute back stabbing fuckers. âCome, I can get you some things to borrow.âÂ
Jane leads you out of the room and through another series of hallways. Seriously unless someoneâs there to escort you, youâll never figure out the maze of hallways. Jane opens a door, gesturing for you to enter before her and you wonder how heavy these doors are. Janeâs room is similarly decorated to the one you just left except hers looks lived in. There are books scattered around the room and little trinkets lining the shelves.Â
âSit, Iâll find you something suitable to wear.â She points to a chair in the corner before she opens the armoire and begins digging through it. She tosses a plain black shirt to you over her shoulder, followed by a pair of black sweatpants. Both seem too big for both you and Jane. Nevertheless you start changing out of your jeans and sweater and into the borrowed clothes. It blows your mind a bit that Janeâs being nice to you when her reputation is certainly not nice. Maybe itâs a witch camaraderie. Maybe itâs because youâre her brotherâs mate.Â
The door opens as you're tying the pants so they donât fall off of you. Alecâs head pops in the room looking slightly panicked. When he sees you and Jane staring back at him he visibly relaxes. âI went back to the other room and found you both gone.â He opens the door wide enough to slip into the room and lets the door fall shut behind him.
âYour human wanted more suitable clothes than what the Cullen sent her with.â Jane shrugs like itâs the most obvious thing in the world. His human. It echoes in your ears as Jane floats towards the door. âI will see you both later.â She doesnât wait for a response and leaves through the door Alec just came through.
âWhereâs she going?â You ask confused why sheâd just leave you in here.
âI donât know. Probably to her room.â Alec shrugs, crossing the room to take the recently vacated chair youâre standing next to.
âThis isnât her room?â
âNo, itâs mine.â Well that makes a lot more sense. You feel silly for asking such an obvious question. He tugs you down to sit with him, more on his lap than the cushion and traps you in his arms. He doesnât say anything else, just holds you with his eyes closed. He looks content, happy even. You take the moment to study his face and come to the conclusion that heâs ridiculously good looking. Like actually ridiculous.
You settle back into Alec and let him hold you. The weight of his arms feel nice and it brings you a strange sense of comfort. You arenât sure if itâs because youâre mates or if itâs just the physical contact of another person. Itâs nice so you donât think too far into it. His thumb strokes the inside of your wrist so lightly it almost tickles. Your eyes close at some point like Alecâs had, your body long melted into his. He moves you into a slightly more comfortable position and drags a thick blanket over the two of you. Heâs content with holding and guarding you while you sleep like a good mate should. Alecâs been waiting too long to not take this seriously. Thereâs no way heâs screwing this up.
~
A little over a month passes and youâre still suspiciously human. Alec has been spending a lot of time with you, taking you around the city and showing you spots he thinks you would like. When he canât be with you, he entrusts your care to Jane or Felix and Demitri. Youâve really enjoyed touring the wineries around Tuscany, the ancient architecture and artwork. Alec has been good to you, making sure to take care of your human needs the best he can. He takes better care of you than you take care of yourself. He doesnât push you farther than holding your hand or holding you in his arms while you sleep. You think you could be really happy with him if you stay here. You just wish you didnât have Bella to thank for sending you here. Even Jane seems to enjoy the time she spends with you, alone or together with Alec. It surprises you, the Jane from the books and the Jane you know are two very different Janes. Again, Bella is a terrible judge of character.Â
The displaced feeling is still eating away at you. You havenât been able to speak with anyone about it because no one would understand. Your theory of Europe being a magical hotspot was a load of shit. Thereâs no magic here for you to use. Everything youâve tried fails miserably to the point youâve contemplating just giving up. You just arenât sure what to do anymore, youâre just lost and dejected hoping for a miracle.
The trouble continues when youâre following Felix and Demitri down one of the towers after enjoying some wine and watching the sunset. The stone steps are getting harder to see and keeping up with them is getting more challenging. Youâre just about to open your mouth to ask them to slow down when your foot lands on the step wrong and your whole leg gives out from under you.
The next thing you know, youâre falling before you distantly hear a crack and searing pain on the back of your neck is the only thing you can feel. Thereâs faint cursing and cold hands are touching you. Itâs the last thing you feel before everything goes black.
~
It feels like when youâre a kid again waking up on fire, except youâre not waking up. Youâre paralyzed in the flames, everything around you pitch black. You can feel the fire inside you, running through your veins and dancing under your skin but it doesnât hurt. Youâve missed the comfort of your fire. Maybe your soul made it back home after all. You drift through the flames, floating and feeling at peace. Finally resting.
~
Itâs very confusing when you open your eyes, the canopy of Alecâs bed above you. The canopy is wrong though. There was no pattern before, just a solid red but now there are fine lines across the entire thing. You can see things floating in the air, little specks swirling around and dancing in your vision. What the fuck? You turn your head to the side and see Alec reading a book in a chair he pulled up next to the bed. At the sound of your movement his eyes snap up meeting yours.
The book is tossed aside and his hands are holding yours in a second. The thud echoes in your ears, bouncing around the inside of your brain. You could see everything perfectly, his movement not blurry at all. His hands feel warm in yours and he gives them a little squeeze as you continue to stare at him. He looks different, clearer than before. You stare into his black eyes and feel a sharp pull deep inside you. Everything feels right looking into his eyes, you feel happy and content being near him. It dulls after a few moments. You figure it was the mating bond snapping into place which only means one thing.
âI died, didn't I?â Was all you asked, you knew you did and now youâre a vampire. Your voice is so different. Thereâs no natural rasp and itâs a slightly higher pitch. It almost sounds like youâre talk singing. You hate it. You also hate the intense burning in your throat. You hate the sharpness of your vision and the noise that makes your ears ring.
Alec squeezes your hand once again and nods. âComing down from the astronomy tower with Felix and Demitri. Iâm so sorry I wasnât there.â He looks genuinely upset. âI had hoped you would choose this life on your own and things couldâve happened differently.â You donât say anything, a hollow feeling floating through your body. Youâre stuck here now. Forever. As a vampire. Youâll never get to see your sisters or your home again. Youâll never feel the warmth of your magic again. The hollowness youâve felt in its absence will never go away and will forever be a part of you. A big part of you wishes theyâd just let you die.
You lay in silence for a while before the door creaks open and Jane slips in the room. She has a giant, steaming bowl on a tray in her hands. She sets the tray down on the bedside table, fishing a blood bag from the hot water and handing it to you. âWe figured it would be easier this way until youâre ready.â She pats Alec on the shoulder as she turns to leave. Her voice sounds different too, not as alluring as it used to be. The realization hits you that this is the only thing youâll ever have again.
âThank you.â You whisper, everything still too loud. You stare at the blood bag in your hand, itâs warm and the little air pocket floats around at the top. Alec squeezes your other hand trying to be supportive as you continue to stare at it doing nothing. He doesnât try to rush you and reaches down to pick his book back up so heâs not staring at you and making you uncomfortable. He opens the book back up and continues reading or at least he pretends to. You can feel the warmth from the bag seeping into your hand but it doesnât give you any satisfaction.
Eventually you bring the blood bag closer to your face, still examining it. Alec doesnât turn to look but you know heâs watching out of the corner of his eye. You bite the corner, really hoping it doesnât explode in your face. The coppery flavor isn't there or maybe it is and you like it now. Itâs not what you expect. Horrible when you think about it but forgettable when you donât. Alec doesnât say anything as you drink the blood bag like a capri sun nor does he say anything when you fish out the other bag from the bowl Jane left. This oneâs not as warm and you donât enjoy it as much as the first. You drink about half of it before holding it out to Alec, offering him the rest.Â
He raises his eyebrows at you and shakes his head, pushing your hand back towards you. âYou need it more, il mio tesoro.â He watches expectantly as you finish the blood bag, smiling and patting your leg. He rises from his seat, holding his hand out to you. âThe Masters requested to see you when you woke.âÂ
You take his hand and let him lead you out of the room. The hallways are empty of others, just you and Alec making your way down the hall. You travel at a normal speed you think? Youâre unsure how fast your movements are now that you can move at super speed. You can hear everything so loud and clearly itâs getting overstimulating. You hold your breath when you pass Gianna, she looks up but barely has time to smile as you and Alec speed by. You can hear her heart thudding in your ears, the blood rushing through her veins and it makes venom pool in your mouth. Not the mouthwatering kind but the kind right before you throw up. Itâs too overwhelming and you kind of want to rip her heart out just to shut her up.
Felix and Demitri are waiting by the doors of the throne room and Demitri sighs seeing you before fishing out an ancient looking pouch. Felix snatches the pouch out of Demitriâs outstretched hand gleefully sliding it into his pocket.
âI told you she wouldnât eat Gianna, Mitri.â Felix gloats before turning to you. âWelcome back, Kid. Sorry about before.â He goes to ruffle the hair on your head but stops when Alec lets out a low, threatening growl. Felix retracts his hand grinning at Alec. They open the door to the throne room and follow the two of you in.
The three vampire royals are all sitting on their thrones waiting. Marcus looks exceptionally bored, Aro smiling wide, and Caius his usual grumpy self. They wait for you to approach with Alec and youâre too busy looking around at all the new details to notice Alec bowing. The sharp details of the marble are beautiful, the flawlessness of some areas contrast the cracked or dulled areas of others.
Aro speaks to you in hushed tones, no doubt trying to help with the overstimulation youâre experiencing. He informs you that youâll be starting training with Felix and Demetri so that your newborn qualities can be controlled. You arenât sure what the red cloak means compared to the various shades of gray everyone else wears but it doesnât really matter. You donât think anyone would try and mess with you because of their fear of Alec.
~
Training with Felix doesnât intimidate you like it probably should. Right now youâre stronger and faster than him. And you know how to fight but you didnât tell him that when you started. Alec and Demitri observe in the corner of the room. Itâs just the four of you in the training room, probably cleared out by Alec for your privacy.
Felix stands in front of you mirroring your relaxed stance. âWeâll start easy. Throw a few punches so I can see what weâre working with.â He stays in his relaxed position, open and bracing for a blow. You donât believe heâll just take them like that.
You cock your arm back like youâre going to try and swing an uppercut since heâs so tall. At the last second you twist and slam your foot into the side of his knee. It buckles and while Felix is trying to catch his footing you straighten and swing as hard as you can. His jaw is at a reachable height now that heâs slightly hunched over and you donât hesitate to send your fist flying as hard as you can. It connects with Felixâs jaw with a sickening crack and his body goes flying across the room. He lands against the wall with a thud.
Thereâs a loud, disbelieving laugh from somewhere behind you, probably from Demitri. Felix sits up and clicks his jaw back into place. You look down at your perfectly unblemished hand. Felix is up and advancing on you and you let him, back to standing casually in the middle of the room you wait for his strike. He goes to lunge and grab at you but you slip out of the way easily. You dance around Felix as he continues to try and swipe at you. He starts making them more and more challenging, seeing what you can handle. Eventually you see an opening in his guard and you take it. You were able to land a few jabs before Felix found himself on his back looking up at you.
âI think youâre a little more advanced than I thought.â He laughs in amazement. He wasnât expecting a tiny thing half his size to thoroughly wallop him like that. Newborn or not.
âFelix, my friend, youâve been slacking on your own training it seems.â Demitri laughs, holding a hand out for Felix to take.
Felix rolls his eyes as Demetri hoists him up. âStill couldnât beat me yesterday so whatâs that say about you?â
Alecâs arms wrap around your midsection and you feel his body pressed behind yours. âMy strong mate.â He murmurs and nuzzles his nose against your neck. You can feel the pleased grin on his face, the smugness for your accomplishments.
Felix turns to you with his hands on his hips. Thereâs a stern expression on his face that doesnât match the mirth dancing in his eyes. âCouldnâtâve warned me before we started?â He laughs and shakes his head when you give him a sheepish smile and shrug.
The four of you move to leave the training room together, done for the day. You wonder how your training will go when you arenât a newborn. Hopefully Felix wonât hold too bad of a grudge.
~
Spending time with Alec is something youâve grown accustomed to. Your favorite place to spend time with him is in your shared room because heâs more relaxed and affectionate with you away from everyoneâs prying eyes. Heâs open around his sister and friends but even more extreme when itâs just you two. You gaze over at him and admire his lounging figure as he reads his book. He really has been making you happy. Your eyes slide past Alec to the crackling fireplace heâs using as a light source. Your mind quiets as you stare at the flames and focus on the inviting glow.
All you can focus on is the dancing flames in the fireplace. Itâs like they are calling out to you, whispering your name and coaxing you farther under their spell. Your feet are glued to the ground, heavy and unwilling to bring you closer to the fireplace. Your entire body feels stuck, frozen in place while the flames enthrall you. Everything around you fades away as you continue to stare into the flames, you donât hear Alec asking if youâre alright, you canât hear the other vampires in the castle moving around, everything is drowned out by the cackle of the fire.
You feel at peace watching the flame dance around and wish you could still wield magic. You miss your fire, the warmth it provided, the familiarity of your magic swirling around inside of you, the comfort it brought by always being with you. You want to reach out and touch the fire, feel the flames curl around and lick your fingers. You want to feel its warm embrace again, surrounding you like a blanket. You donât notice smoke filling the room and Alecâs panicked voice yelling for you. You continue to stare into the fire, unnoticing as your clothes slowly burn off your body, flames dancing on your skin mirroring the flames in the fireplace. Your entire body is engulfed in fire, the flames heating your marble like skin and you feel truly warm for the first time since turning into a vampire.
Your trance is broken by a vase hitting you square in the chest. The flames vanish in a wisp of smoke when you startle, the vase hitting the ground and shattering. Alec is in front of you immediately, checking you over for any injuries. âAre you alright, cuore mio? Are you hurt?â He must realize that heâs looking at your naked body because his hands retract and Alec blinks a few times before continuing to look you over. Upon finding nothing wrong he tears his cloak off and wraps it around you.
âI just wanted to feel them again.â You whisper, gazing over his shoulder at the fire still burning in the fireplace. He steps in front of your line of vision, trying to keep you from busting into flames again.
He wraps one arm around your waist pulling you close. His other hand holds your head against his chest, softly stroking your hair. âI was so afraid you wouldnât be alright.â Alec murmurs while holding you in his arms, his head angled down so his cheek could rest on the top of your head. You slowly come back to your senses, the spell from the fire seeming to release you fully from whatever hold it still hand on you. Wrapping your arms around Alec, you hug him back while the last few minutes start setting in. You were on fire. A little flutter of hope curls around your heart, maybe you havenât lost your fire after all and itâs returned to you now.
âLetâs get you dressed.âAlec gives you another squeeze before letting you out of his embrace. You let Alec redress you, his careful movements amusing to you considering youâre still stronger than him in your newborn stage. He leaves his cloak over your shoulders as he buttons the borrowed shirt closed. Itâs long enough to reach midthigh but he still finds a pair of pants for you to wear.
âWe should inform the Masters.â He holds his arm out for you as you leave the room, escorting you through the halls. Youâre acutely aware of the lit candles burning as you walk through the halls, the flames brightening and growing stronger and straightening as you pass them before dimming back to their normal flicker. Itâs like your trance earlier put you in tune with fire, more so than you were in your own universe. You were aware of all the elements before, even the ones you werenât good at wielding, but not like this. This is completely different. You donât feel anything except the fire.
Caius and Aro are already in the throne room when you follow Alec in. Aro turns from where heâs standing, a smile stretching across his face. Quite the opposite from Caius, who narrows his eyes, always displeased with something.Â
âAh, Alec and Y/N! What brings you to us?â Aro lets you two approach him, Alec still gilding you on his arm. Alec bows, something you still feel weird about doing and probably why Caius still doesnât like you very much. He holds out his hand for Aro to read his thoughts, finding it easier than putting into words that you were on fire. Aroâs eyes widen, a gleeful gleam in them as he assesses you in a new light like youâre a prize. You guess you are in their pursuit of being the most powerful coven. âFire? My dear, could you do it again and show us?â
Caius leans forward in his chair, resting his hands on his kneecaps watching in curiosity at the new development. Itâs the only time heâs never glared at you but youâll take what you can get. You unclasp Alecâs cloak and hand it back to him while your nerves increase. You donât even remember being on fire last time or how you even became on fire. You look around the room, hoping thereâs a candle you can focus on since the last time the fireplace was your trigger. There in one of the sconces is a candle still burning, the flame flickering around. As you zero in on it, the flame stops flickering and burns straight up as a steady flame. Your mind quiets again as you stare at the flame and for you time stands still. You hear and feel the crackle of the wick burning, something inside of you wants to mimic the feeling. Your eyes unfocus on everything except the flame as you become it. Itâs like youâre also the candle wick burning bright and strong.Â
Thereâs an Amore! yelled in the distance but you pay it no mind, still focusing on the bright glow of the flame and it reflecting back through your eyes. The trance is once again broken by Alec, stepping between you and the candle. It takes a moment for you to blink through the fog. It feels like youâre a candle just after being blown out, smoking as your embers cool and looking for a spark to relight. Alec is wrapping his cloak back around you, shielding your modesty. He unbuttons his shirt as fast as he can before sliding it around your body under the cloak. Itâs a little awkward trying to get your arms in the holes but Alecâs hands are there already buttoning the shirt closed. He tugs the front edges of the cloak so it pools closed around you hiding your bare legs. Satisfied with you being covered he turns back to stand beside you as Aro and Caius regard you.
âOh that was marvelous!â Aro claps his hands, smiling from ear to ear like the Cheshire Cat. âOh my Dear, what a wonderful gift you have! Weâll have Gianna order you some fireproof clothes and a new cloak.âÂ
He turns to Caius who looks impressed, the first actual emotion other than disdain youâve ever seen on his face. âPurphaps a few fire extinguishers as well, we canât have her burning the whole palace down.â Aro cackles at Caiusâs joke, well, you arenât sure if itâs a joke or a mild insult.
âCome Brother, let us go find Marcus and delight him with the news.â Aro turns and glides towards the dias where the thrones are. Alec holds his arm out for you to start walking towards the door, his hand finding your back to escort you back to your room.
Walking back through the hallways in nothing but Alecâs shirt and cloak seems to be stressing him out more than it does to you. Alec glares at every guard you pass, intimidating them to avert their eyes until you pass. He actually growled at the first one because they didnât look away from your bare legs quick enough. Legs! Itâs cute heâs being protective of you but heâs acting like youâre wearing a bikini.
When the two of you make it back to your shared room he pulls you close to him, wrapping his arms around your middle and hugging you from behind. He noses the side of your neck leaving kisses in his wake. It lights a new kind of fire in you, a delicious warmth spreading from your neck and pooling low in your belly. Alecâs fingers tighten their hold on your hips as you push back into his hardening crotch.
Pausing his assault on your neck he whispers to you while his hands slide up to cup and squeeze your breasts. âMy little mate, so powerful and beautiful. How did I get so lucky?â You feel his nose ghost the shell of your ear as his fingers roll your nipples through the borrowed shirt. Alec grins when he hears you let out a soft moan accompanied with more grinding. âWhat do you need, carissima?â Alec doesnât wait for a response and pushes his hips forward into yours, grinding against your rear and kneading your breasts roughly in his hands. You moan out his name trying to grind back into him desperate for more friction. You hear him chuckle, rolling his hips again against you. âUse your words for me, principessa.â
âPlease Alec.â You try pathetically, the need for him growing in you by the second. You hear him tut behind you before he pinches both of your nipples harshly.Â
âTry again amore.â Alec noses the shell of your ear again, his enjoyment from teasing you clear in his voice.
You push your hips back against his again trying to swim through the pleasure of his touch. âPlease fuck me Alec.â You say softly, the neediness in your voice apparent. You donât care, you want more than the few kisses youâve shared with him. You're greedy for his affection, his attention, him. He has you spun around and in his arms speeding towards the bed. His lips are on yours, firmly melding them together in a hot, hungry kiss.
You and Alec fall onto the bed together, him slotting himself on top of you without breaking your kiss. He tears your borrowed shirt down the middle, the buttons flying around you in Alecâs haste. He leaves you in his cloak and breaks the kiss to admire you under him. Thereâs a hunger in his black eyes, a burning desire for you that makes your heart swell. You know he cares for you, yes, but the intense look heâs giving you leaves little doubt about how strongly he feels for you.
~
A lesser guard comes by your room later with a new cloak folded nicely on a silver tray. Instead of another red one itâs pitch black. You donât understand what it means or why Alec is practically vibrating in excitement when he turns away from the door with it in his hands. He has the same smug grin on his face while he peppers kisses over your face murmuring sweetly in between kisses.
âMy pretty little mate. So beautiful. So powerful. How am I so lucky?â He keeps repeating more to himself than to you. When heâs satisfied with the praises and kisses heâs given you he takes a step back.
âNot another red one?â You reach out meaning to take it and put it next to Alecâs by the door. He pulls it away from your hands grinning.
âOf course not. The red was to indicate your newborn status. You would have been given a grey one next, probably one to match Aftonâs but I canât be sure. Since your gift is so powerful you have a black one like the Masters. It shows your status among the guards.â He drapes the cloak around your shoulders and fastens the clasp around your neck as he explains, the smug grin never wavering.
He takes a step back, admiring your form in your new cloak. âMy beautiful mate.â He moves back towards you, resting a hand on your waist and the other on the nape of your neck. He cradles your head, tipping it back to smile down at you before capturing your lips in his for a firm kiss. He rests his forehead on yours, grinning. âOut ranked by my own mate.â He doesnât sound upset at the notion, quite the opposite, he looks overjoyed.
âIt doesnât bother you?â You whisper up at him worried he could resent you at some point. Itâs happened before in the past. Mages uncomfortable with your level of power being too close or exceeding theirs. Some mages only date hedge witches or practitioners of simple magic so they could stroke their own egos through the entire relationship. Youâve been a vampire for maybe a week and youâve already leap frogged almost everyone here.
âBother me? Amore, why would it bother me? I get to brag to everyone about my beautiful, powerful mate. My mate. I get to see you instilling fear in the hearts of everyone from your power, not from mine.â He smiles at you again and nuzzles your cheek with his nose and you can tell heâs being genuine. Youâve never had such a supportive partner before. Someone not secretly competing with you or threatened by your power. Not secretly hoping for you to slip up. Alec is nothing but supportive, actively rooting for your success. You think you might love him for it. He kisses your forehead again and pulls you into another tight embrace.
Alec walks to two of you back until the back of your knees brush against your bed. Alec leans away from you, grinning. âBothered? Definitely. Just not in the way you think, amore.â He gently pushes you back so you fall back onto the bed. You see what he means now that you arenât standing eye level in front of him.Â
He runs his hands softly up your legs starting at your ankles. Gliding over your pajama shorts and grasping the waistband before pulling them slowly down your legs. He tears the shirt youâre wearing down the middle and then off your body completely leaving you in only your new cloak. Seriously, you think, I just put that one on. You and Alec are going to have no shirts if he keeps ripping them off of you.Â

With your new found status in the hierarchy of guards, thereâs a lot more free time than you expected to have. You donât have patrols or watch shifts like the lower members do. You donât have to stand guard outside the throne room. All you have to do is train your few hours each day with Felix and attend hearings or go on missions, both of which hasnât happened yet. A lot of your free time is now in the library reading through the vast selection of literature from across the ages. Jane or Alec normally join you when they are free too, sometimes the three of you reading in silence or a pair playing chess while another reads.
There was no warning the day they came. A member of the lower guard was sent to bring you to the throne room, not saying the reason. You figured today would be the day youâd have to sit through a trial. Inside the throne room though are two familiar worried looking faces. Emmett and Rosalie stand in the center of the room and turn to look back at you as you enter.
For a split second they look shocked, like their brains short circuited before refiring. It looks like Rosalie is about to say something but Emmett is already moving to stand in front of you. Youâre off the floor being squeezed in his arms. Hisses and growls fill the chamber from Alec and the other high guard at the same time Emmett murmurs "thank god youâre okay.â Rosalie is there behind him, pushing him out of her way as soon as your feet are on the ground again.
âWeâve been so worried about you.â She squeezes you like Emmett does, giving you a hug that wouldâve surely cut you in half if you were still human.
âYou act as if weâd purposely hurt my mate.â Alec appears by your side as Rosalie sets you back on the ground. Rosalie raises her eyebrows at Alec but doesnât say what sheâs thinking.
âHow have you guys been? I need to get a phone so we can talk more often!â You smile at Emmett and Rosalie excitedly. Maybe you can get Leahâs number too.
Emmett pulls his out of his pocket and slaps it in your hand. âHere. No excuses.â You laugh and slide the phone into your own pocket.
âThe lovely Rosalie informed us of the recent transgressions of her coven. It seems she and her mate are far smarter than the rest of the clan.â Aro smiles his creepy smile and clasps his hands at his chest. âWhy donât you catch up in one of the sitting rooms while my brothers and I discuss what to do about the rest of the Olympic Coven.â It was a clear dismissal but a polite one. You wonder what trouble Bellaâs cooked up now.
Alec leads the three of you back to your bedroom. He perches you on his lap in the armchair letting Emmett and Rosalie take the loveseat. âNot that Iâm unhappy to see you but Iâm surprised you came.â You didnât think youâd ever see them again.
âBellaâs been insufferable ever since you left. Parading around like nothing happened. Our final straw was her telling Edward they should still let everything happen since she knows they get away with it not considering she's ruining Carlisleâs and everyone who was a witnessâs reputation with the Vultori.â Rosalie states as soon as sheâs settled onto the couch cushion.
âJesus Christ.â You facepalm and shake your head. Disappointed but not surprised.
âShe was pissed when we figured out youâd been turned.â Rosalie continues, âAlice said they granted you time to settle in but she never saw you or Alec choose. After Bella decided she was still going to have the baby Alice saw the Vultori come. She said you were there as a vampire wearing a black cloak and that you wouldnât try and stop the Volturi. Bella lost it when Edward explained what the cloak meant and she started the turning argument again. And then the baby conversation happened a few weeks later.â
âI donât even know what her problem with me is. I didnât do shit to her.â Like what the fuck?
âSheâs jealous. Jasper told me after you left.â Emmett causally states from his relaxed position on the loveseat.
âIsabella is an incredibly selfish fool.â Alec comments lightly stroking your hand resting in his. You canât help but agree with him.
âWe didnât want her to take us down with her. So we left. We told them we wouldnât be a witness for them if they followed through with the pregnancy and the Volturi came knocking.â Rosalie sighs. You feel bad for Rosalie knowing she loved Rigatoni in the books but since you came and told everyone what would happen you robbed her of that. There was never a guarantee that things wouldâve exactly played out the same. Even if you didnât tell them and went on your way eventually you wouldâve still ended up here in Volterra.Â
Emmett and Rosalie donât stay but promise to stay in touch. They are heading up to Sweden claiming they are overdue for another honeymoon. Even though you originally didnât want to stay in this universe let alone a vampire in the Volturi, youâre content. Happy even. You have a mate that loves you, friends, your fire. The only thing you wish you couldâve had is one last goodbye to your sisters. You hope they found a way to at least see youâre okay.

You follow Seth through the house a little annoyed you have to be here after vowing to never step foot in it after what Sam and Emily did to Leah. On principle and loyalty to your friend who had her heart broken by her cousin and ex-fiance you never wanted to see either of them ever again, let alone be in their house. You wonder how Leah stands it, being here and still socializing with them when you know it still bothers her. You still canât believe she was in their wedding, that viper asking her to be her maid of honor. You still remember being in Leahâs room while she found out theyâd been sneaking around together after Sam suddenly broke things off with her. Your friend was never the same after that.
The voices you heard when stepping through their front door grow louder as you near the kitchen, a shirtless man stands in the doorway leaning against the doorframe. Seth bumps shoulders with him as he passes by, completely comfortable around these people. You wonder how heâs okay with all of this as well. Unfurrowing your brow, you follow him through the door hoping this doesnât take long.
âThis is Y/N, mine and Leahâs friend from Forks.â Seth gestures to you and you give a tight smile and small wave. There are a few more boys loitering around the room, mainly at the dining area where Leah is sitting looking like sheâd rather be anywhere else.
âHey guys. Leah, your bags in my car.â She nods her head and thereâs an awkward silence, Sam looking over at Leah as her face pinches and her eyes unfocus like sheâs thinking hard about something. You look at the guy sheâs sitting next to, not knowing what else to do. He looks back at you, his eyes widening a little and you take it as a âwell this is awkwardâ expression and offer him a small grin in return. You look back over to Leah who looks surprised, turning in her chair to look at the man next to her. Everyone turns to look at him like heâs suddenly a spectacle to them.
âAll right Paul!â The guy leaning on the doorframe exclaims excitedly. Seth turns to grin at you to your utter confusion.
âSheâs not going to believe any of you.â Leah mutters and turns back to look at you, a look on her face you can't quite place.
âBelieve what?â You say slowly, suspiciously. You have a feeling youâre about to be the butt of a practical joke.
âThat weâre wolf shifters. Paul imprinted on you.â Sam says flatly, he knows you donât like him and that you still resent him for what he did to Leah. He still remembers when you had slammed the door in his face when he came by the Clearwater house one time to speak with Harry and then made him wait out on the porch. In the rain.
You donât say anything just turning to Leah for confirmation. She nods her head solemnly, confirming what Sam said. You arenât sure you want to believe that the Quillute legends are true. Wolves? Vampires?
âAll of you?â You ask dryly, suddenly aware you are in the middle of the room of supposed wolves. The rumors about Samâs cult makes a lot more sense now.
âIâm not.â Emily says and you ignore her. It would explain why Seth and Leah are both in this god damned house if Sam and them are wolves. You still feel skeptical about all of this.
âAnd imprinting?â You ask looking back at the guy youâre guessing is Paul. This is not what you signed up for earlier when Seth said heâd take you to Leah. You thought youâd just be picking her up, you didnât even want to come inside.
âItâs a bond. The wolfâs spirit is bound to you.â Sam begins to explain seeing the skepticism written on your face. A little help Paul, Sam growls in the mind link. Paulâs just staring at you, open mouth like a fish. It seems to snap him out of his jumbled thoughts.
âYou can choose whatever kind of relationship the bond is, it doesnât have to be romantic. It can be a close friendship. The wolf just wants to protect you and make sure youâre happy and taken care of.â Paul tries to explain earnestly. âIâll go with whatever you choose.â He watches the wheels turning in your mind as you try and process this.
A calculating gleam in your expression as your eyes drift over to Emily, then Sam, then back to Emily before sliding over to land on Leah. âI seeâŠâ The tone of your voice is light and innocent as something ugly crosses your face, your nose wrinkling and brows furrowing as you come to a conclusion Paul suspects is about Sam and Emilyâs imprint bond.Â
Emily turns to busy herself with something at the sink, uncomfortable and a little pink in the face. Sam frowns at you, not liking the direction this is going. No one else in the room says a word, everyone suddenly focused on something other than the tension rapidly mounting and trying not to think too hard in the mind link. Paul doesnât know what to say, does he defend Sam and Emily since you donât know what the imprint bond feels like and risk you rejecting him outright for it? He thinks he should probably remove you from the situation before it gets worse. You take a few steps towards him, looking down at him where heâs sitting at the table.
âYou got a girlfriend?â Too late, he blinks up at you and shakes his head slowly. âSweet, Iâd hate to homewreck something youâve already got going on.â You drop yourself down on his lap, turning towards where Leah is sitting leaving him stunned. âSo anyways,â You continue like nothingâs happened. Sethâs eyes widen in horror as he continues to focus on picking at his fingernails. He regrets bringing you here, he shouldâve known it was a bad idea. Samâs nostrils flare as the mind link goes crazy with people trying and failing to keep their reactions to themselves. He sees Emily pause and stiffen for a second before continuing rinsing the vegetables she was holding. âEveryoneâs just staying for the weekend but Tilly said if we wanted to stay longer her and Jackson donât care and to just lock up when we leave.â
Paul doesnât know what to do or where to put his hands. He looks at Jared for help but Jared just smirks at him from the doorway. He knows you were just taking a jab at Emily but does this also mean youâre open to the idea of the imprint bond?Â
In truth, you donât know what to believe and deciding to just roll with it for now seems like a good idea. Seth and Leah wouldnât lie to you like this but itâs still difficult to wrap your head around. You can feel the heat radiating off of Paul as he sits under you, stiff as a board. It would explain why both Leah and Seth were suddenly hot to the touch out of nowhere. It could be worse you guess, Paulâs cute and seems like a nice guy. You canât wait to interrogate Leah on the drive out of here.
You twist around to look at Paul who stiffens even further under your gaze. âYou got a phone?â He nods his head quickly, ignoring Jaredâs snort as he accepts your phone to put his number in. He watches over your shoulder as you send him a text with your name and a smiley face before sliding your phone back into your jacket pocket.
âReady to go Leah?â His throat tightens with a whine he wonât let escape as you rise off his lap. Leah side eyes him as she nods as she stands, ready to follow you out. âBye Paul.â You sing flirtatiously over your shoulder as you begin moving towards the door. You ruffle Sethâs hair as you pass by him and the man leaning against the doorframe moves out of your way as you pass by him. Paul watches you go bewildered at the events of the last five minutes and upset that youâre leaving. He doesnât like the idea of you immediately leaving but he knows he canât expect you to drop everything suddenly. And youâll be with Leah, so youâll be safe and he can bug her through the mindlink. Itâll give him time to clean up his house and hound Seth for more information about you.
This was not what you had in mind for how your day would be going at all. Werewolves? Crazy. Someone claiming youâre bonded to them? Crazy. Leahâs got a lot of explaining to do and you have a feeling youâre coming back from this weekend to a completely different life than you had before.
You last about five seconds after the Uley house is gone from your rearview mirror before groaning, âDoes this mean I have to be nice to them?â You look long suffering at Leah.
She barks out a laugh, not thinking this is what youâd lead with. âSamâs the Alpha and everyone loves Sam and Emily. They donât like me because Iâm the bitter ex that canât get over what happened and now they have to hear all my angry thoughts about it.â
âWhat the hell? Who wouldnât be angry about that? Emily swore to you nothing was going on between her and Sam but come to find out weeks later theyâd been secretly seeing each other. How can they not see the betrayal in that?â Your hold on the steering wheel tightens so hard the leather creaks under the white knuckle grip you have on it. You hate her so much for what she did to you friend.
âSam couldnât help it, he didnât have a choice. I understand that now. It hurts that I couldnât be that for him. It shouldâve been me, not her. But yeah. Emily had a choice. And she chose to be with him romantically. She chose to give into their bond. She couldâve rejected him after what he did to her but she didnât. She stayed. Thatâs what hurts me the most. She chose to hurt me further. She chose to live the life that Sam and I planned together. And now I canât even get away from them.â Leah shakes her head, miserable that this is how her life turned out. In a year she lost everything but somehow asking for a little compassion or understanding from the people sheâs in a pack with is too much to ask.
âGod, what a fucking slimy bitch.â You mutter to yourself seething with anger. Leah doesnât doubt that your rage could rival Paulâs quick temper. She almost feels bad for him, knowing how serious you carry your grudges.Â
âIâm glad Iâll at least have you there now.â She grins at you, âPaulâs already grilling Seth for information about you.â She laughs glad to be leaving for the weekend with you and not having to deal with that like Seth is.
âHow do you know?â You ask a little curious. Itâs still crazy to you that the legends are true and that your best friend is a wolf shifter. A lot of things make more sense but itâs still a wild concept that makes you feel a little crazy believing.
âWe can hear each otherâs thoughts.â Leah says glumly.
âOh, you meant that literally.â You were a little stunned. That must suck, not being able to have a private thought or opinion without everyone else knowing about it. Leah hums in assertion and closes her eyes. She breathes in deeply and exhales slowly, pushing the packâs thoughts back into the recesses of her mind.
âWell, imprint bond or not I expect to be wooâed. He doesnât get an easy pass just because itâs fate or whatever.â You think for a second and add, âand he has to be nice to you.â Leah laughs again knowing youâll have Paul wrapped around your finger in no time. Sheâs happy for you, glad that youâll have someone love you unconditionally and wholly. Maybe youâll move to the Rez and sheâll get to see you all the time and life wonât be so glum anymore.
âOh! I almost forgot! Jacksonâs brotherâs coming and heâs siinngglllee. And your tyyppee.â You grin at Leah who rolls her eyes. âOh, donât be like that. Itâll be a fun weekend even if you donât get your back blown out.â Leah groans, covering her face with her hands as you laugh at her. She knows youâre right, it will be a fun weekend away from the pack and her responsibilities.
You feel your phone buzz in your pocket wondering if itâs Paul already. Waiting until a stop light to check, a giddy feeling overtakes your body when you see it is. Iâll be ready to woo you when you get back from your trip. Have fun.Â
Love it. The betrayal of Emily gets forgotten too easily. Also love the writing. đ„°

Prompt: you're dragged into your sisters mess when her stupid exboyfriend tries to kill himself in italy
Pairing: paul x reader x jared

i get bored at work okay
Bzz. Bzz. Bzz.
The vibrations from Bellaâs phone cut the quiet tension immediately. Edward and Felix both relax from their fighting stance and look over as if to say âReally? Right now?â The buzzing stops and immediately starts again with a new call. Your name flashes across the screen and a sense of impending doom fills Bella. Bzz. Bzz. Bzz.
âSheâs just going to keep calling.â Bella glances nervously between Edward and Aro. Edward sighs knowing this is going to open a whole new can of worms. The vibrations stop momentarily before starting again. Bzz. Bzz. Bzz.
Bella tenses like sheâs bracing for impact when she flicks her phone open. âHey,â she tries to say casually but it comes more across as unsure.
There wasnât a greeting back, just a light, âAre you busy right now?â Bella knows that tone and the hairs raise on the back of her neck. Sheâs been caught.
âUh⊠Out with⊠Jake.â Bella stutters out. Stupid, she shouldâve said someone you aren't also friends with. She couldnâtâve said Angela?
âOh really? Perfect, can you ask him to come back with you tonight? I need him to look at my car.â Youâre still using that tone. Bella can see the look on your face, the pinched smile, the anger in your eyes, you leaning against the counter with your arms crossed. Like a cat that cornered a mouse, playing with it before tearing it to shreds.
âOh⊠I wasnât planning on being back tonight.â Bella closes her eyes and waits for the hammer. âBecause youâre in Italy right?â There it is. Bella sighs, mildly embarrassed her older sister about to start reaming her and everyone can overhear. Bella wonders how long it took Jacob to rat her out.
âBefore you start-â Bella tries to explain herself but you cut her off.
âDo not âBefore you startâ me, Isabella Marie Swan. You are not the one that woke up with twenty missed calls from Charlie. Have you lost your goddamn mind?â Your voice raises slightly over the phone and Bella knows your control over your temper is slipping.
âI can explain.â She tries again, weaker this time. âWait. You werenât home last night?â
âWe arenât discussing me right now. We are discussing the fact that you are pulling the same bullshit you did six months ago, so you better fucking start explaining and have a damn good reason. You donât even have a passport, Isabella.â Bella didnât think about that when Alice said she had everything taken care of already.
âAlice ca-â There was a loud exhale from the other line. â-me and said Edward was in trouble.â
âPut him on the phone right now.â You demand, your voice hardening with your rising anger.
Edward winces as he takes the phone from Bella. âY/N.â He greets casually.
You donât greet him back. âI swear on your dead motherâs grave if my little sister isnât returned home without a hair out of place by tomorrow evening, I will tear you apart limb from limb before putting your head on a pike to use as a mailbox. Are we clear?â You growl over the phone.
âCrystal.â His mouth twitches knowing youâre completely serious too.
âPut Alice on the phone.â Edward holds the phone out for Alice to take.
âY/N.â Alice greets a little nervously. Youâre always a wild card for her, something about you causing her visions to go wrong.
You lay into her seeing red. âYou ignored Bella for months but as soon as you or your family has a problem you decide you can just waltz back in like nothing happened? Dragging her to another country to help someone that left her in the woods? Did you know she was catatonic for months while you ignored her emails? Do not think Iâve forgotten about the last time she went on a trip with your family and ended up in the hospital either. Unbelievably selfish. Were you thinking at all? And you call yourself her friend? Put my sister back on the phone.â
âPlease donât tell Charlie.â Was the first thing Bella said. She doesnât know how Alice got her a passport but she has a feeling it was through less than legal means which she canât explain to her dad, the sheriff. âDonât tell Charlie?â You scoff, âIsabella, heâs not the one you should be worried about. Get your ass back to Forks before I come drag you back myself.â You hang up not waiting for Bellaâs reply. Thereâs nothing else to say.
Aro hums as Bella stuffs her phone back into her pocket, face red. âDo tell us more about the elder Swan.â She stands up straighter at that, panic spreading like ice through her veins.
âY/N doesnât know anything. I havenât told her anything about vampires.â Bella promises, she hasnât told you anything about vampires or werewolves. Youâre completely in the dark. Safe.
âAh but you canât be sure. Edward has expressed many thoughts of frustration not being able to read her. Or you for the matter.â Aro counters lightly, a smug smile stretching across his face. âShe does pose a danger to the secrecy of our kind does she not?â
âWhat if sheâs turned too?â Bella tries bargaining for your life desperately. Aro thinks for a moment, weighing the possibilities. If Bella could be a potential shield then it shouldn't be impossible for her family member to have a similar gift. An unattached sister more willing to join their ranks and could possibly entice Bella to follow. Edward frowns at Aroâs train of thought.
âWe should take care of the loose ends now before they cause more problems.â Caius hisses from his throne, his hands tightening around the head of the armrests.
âWait! Iâve seen it. Bella becomes one of us, Iâve seen her transformed in visions.â Alice interjects quickly. She tears her glove from her hand, offering it to Aro desperately. âAnd what of the elder Swan?â He lets Aliceâs hand fall from his own, wondering about all the gifted additions he could have for his coven.
âI only see false visions about her but Iâll change them both myself if I need to.â Alice vows hoping that it would be enough.Â
âTo see the things you have seen before they have even happened? How incredible. You can see lovely Isabella but not her sister? Perhaps she should be examined before being disposed of after all. Alright. Demitri. Return to Forks and collect the elder Swan.â Aro claps his hands and grins excitedly, his mind racing with all the possibilities. Edwards jaw clicks hearing his thoughts but doesnât comment on them. âIt would do well if you inform her of Demitriâs arrival so she can make adequate departure plans. I donât think I need to remind you to advise her of our secrecy should she need an explanation for leaving. Felix will show you to a room you can rest in until Demitri returns.â
~
Bellaâs been pacing back and forth since they entered the room Felix escorted them to. Alice and Edward lounge on the plush velvet couches near some windows covered with thick curtains. Felix stands inside the room next to the door but lacks the rigidness he held in the throne room. He just casually leans against the wall flipping through a book. Bella doesnât pay enough mind to know if heâs actually reading it or not.
âBella, it's been twelve hours, I donât think sheâs still that angry.â Alice tries gently to calm the anxiety plaguing Bella. She saw how the phone call goes when Bella decided sheâd tell her before Demitri got there. The only problem is all of Aliceâs visions unfold and end differently than what she saw if youâre in them. So chances are the phone call goes well, thereâs no reason for them to suddenly start being accurate now.
âYou donât know that for sure.â Bella groans, hiding her face in between her hands. âWhere do I even start? Surprise, Iâm dating a vampire.â She shakes her head and mutters to herself, âIâm never beating the crazy allegations.â
âIâm sure sheâll come around and believe you when Demitri collects her.â Felix adds unhelpfully not bothering to look up from his book. Bella groans again and pulls out her phone. She wished Jasper was here to get her through this confidently.
There were only a few rings before a tired, âHey.â
âHi,â Bella says softly, and hesitates, âAre you gonna yell at me again?â
There were a few tired chuckles over the phone. âNo, probably not until you get back.â
âI would be surprised if you didnât.â Bella cracks a smile, âYouâve always been the parent of the family.â
âSomeone's gotta. Please tell me youâre on your way home. Charlieâs driving me up a wall. Iâm pretty sure heâs putting bars over our windows. Total house arrest. Wouldnât surprise me if he just moves us into the stationâs double cell.â You groan, sounding annoyed just thinking about it. Bella feels bad youâre dealing with the fallout for her but grateful at the same time.
âNo, not yet. I⊠need to tell you some things. Itâs going to sound crazy but just hear me out.â Bella swallows and rocks from the balls of her feet back to her heels trying to burn off some of the anxiety building. Thereâs a few seconds of silence before you respond. âOkay?â You donât sound impressed and the apprehension thick in your voice.
âEdwardisavampireandsoaretherestoftheCullens.â Bella word vomits at you, not pausing between words. Bella sighs, almost relieved but the pause, this one even longer than the first, from you immediately kills any relief she momentarily felt.
âThats what the edgelord is calling himself these days?â You finally respond dryly, unimpressed.
âIâm serious.â Bella rolls her eyes, she knew you wouldnât take this seriously.Â
Thereâs a heavy sigh from the other line. âOkay, why are you telling me this?â You sound almost inconvenienced that Bellaâs telling you this.Â
âItâs a long story but Edward thought I was dead and went to the equivalent of the vampire police hoping they would kill him. Alice and I stopped him but they found out I was still alive. Their biggest law is that humans canât know about vampires. They learned about you from Edwardâs thoughts and are suspicious about you knowing too. They sent someone to bring you here. They wanted to kill you but agreed to offer you the same choice as me. Turn or die.â Bella rushes out, leaving out a lot of details. Mainly the one where she offered to die first and how you barely were spared a choice.
Another long, exasperated sigh blew through the speaker. âDo you understand now why I tried so hard to convince you to leave him alone and not get involved with that god forsaken family?â There was a bite to your words laced with disappointment. Bella feels like sheâs just been slapped.
Bellaâs jaw drops and Felix raises his eyebrows, not even bothering to pretend to feign interest in the book anymore. Alice and Edward blink in surprise, thinking back to all their interactions with you looking for any tell that you wouldâve known. âWait, you knew this whole time?â Sheâs shocked and a little angry.
âBella, I've lived in Forks my entire life. Of course I knew.â Bella can feel you rolling over the phone at her. Your patronizing tone doesnât even register over the building betrayal Bella feels.
âYou never said anything.â Bella accuses, scowling. Why didnât you say something to her?
âNeither did you. Wasnât any of our business in the first place.â She can hear you shrug over the phone and yeah, your argument is fair. If Bella wouldâve minded her own business she wouldnât be in this mess or in a mess with Victoria. Curiosity does indeed kill the cat.
âIâm sorry.â She sighs, realizing the weight of the mess sheâs landed them in. She didnât want to drag her sister into this.
âSo am I. Iâm not choosing to turn into one of them.â You tell her flatly and Bellaâs jaw drops again.
Felixâs eyebrows raise again, âWhat? Why not?â Bella asks frantically. How could you not want it?
âBella, you've seen who I hang around with. Iâll lose my entire social circle. Iâll have to leave Forks and never see Charlie or my friends again. Becoming a vampire will literally ruin my life.â You scoff and Bella knows you're shaking your head. She can picture the deep frown on your face and she hears you exhale loudly through your nose.
Bellaâs head rears back like sheâs been slapped and stares at her phone for a few seconds. âWait, you know about⊠the Rez?â Bella asks vaguely, if you knew about the Cullens thereâs no way you didnât know about the pack. The betrayal is back in full force, you never said anything when Jacob phased and started ignoring Bella. You just kept telling her to give him time to come around and that heâs going through a confusing time. Oh my god, it hits Bella all at once. Deep down, she knows that thereâs not much more you couldâve realistically said. âSorry, your new best friend found out heâs historically enemies with your ex-boyfriend and found out it was their presence in the area that caused him to phase in the first place?â Yeah that wouldâve gone over great, Bella thinks.
You sigh, again, âYes Bella. Thatâs part of the reason we are getting bars on our windows.â Your patronizing tone is back like youâre talking to a fifth grader and have been waiting for her to catch up.
âWhat did you do?â Bella asks suspiciously. She wonders what you couldâve done that is near the scale Bellaâs at. Â
âHeh. About that.â Bella caught the tonal shift and can picture the sly grin on your face. You sound absolutely gleeful.
âOh my god what did you do?â Bellaâs actually a little concerned now. What could you have done that was so bad?
âMore like who.â Bella can almost see your shit eating smile clearly as her brain short circuits.
Okay, Bella stands corrected, it was worse than she imagined. âWhat?â She shrieks, Edward and Alice shake their heads. Of course both Swan sisters are danger magnets.
You sigh deeply and Bella can hear your hair rustling the speaker. âSomeone told Charlie Iâm sleeping with Jared.â You sound more annoyed than angry and Bellaâs jaw drops. She canât keep up with all the bombs youâve dropped in this conversation.
âYouâre sleeping with Jared?â She asks almost disbelievingly. Jared?!
âAnd Paul.â You add casually still smirking at Bella hundreds of thousands of miles away. Bellaâs eyes almost bug out of her head, her mouth opening and closing like a fish.
She temporarily overcomes her shock, the gates opening to her flood of questions. âAnd Paul?! For how long? Do they know? Wait, of course they both know. And theyâre fine with it?â Bella is rapidly blinking trying to make sense of this. Her mind is absolutely reeling.
âWell duh. They take me to Paris all the fucking time.â You laugh at Bella over the phone like that was the stupidest question youâve ever heard.
The lights are completely off in Bellaâs brain. âOh. My. God.â Her brain is broken. Obliterated. Her sister. Aware. Vampires. Sleeping with not one but two wolves.Â
âYeah someone told Charlie and he freaked out. My bets on Billy or Harry. Fuckinâ snakes. I had to explain what friends with benefits are. It was terrible.â You just continue to take your sledgehammer to Bellaâs already mush brain.
âOh my god.â Bella knew her sister had her own life but she never even fathomed this. How long has this been going on?
âHe went through an entire six pack before noon. Harry came and took him out fishing.â You were cackling at her now. Cackling. Bellaâs mind is still spinning.
âAre you theirâŠâ She starts, wondering how this all works.Â
âNo.â You cut her off quickly, your jovial tone gone and replaced with something hard and guarded. âWe agreed that whenever it happened for them we would stop, no hard feelings. I knew before we started screwing around I never had an actual chance.â
Bella swallows thickly, âThatâsâŠâ She doesnât know what to say.
âPathetic, I know.â You finish for her, the hard tone drier than before. The vampires in the room all look down and away from watching Bella, uncomfortable at the sudden change in the conversationâs direction.
Hope fills Bellaâs chest, maybe you could still be convinced. âIf youâre going to lose them eventually then why wonât you become a vampire?â
You sigh, âItâs not just them. Iâll be voluntarily excommunicating myself from everyone.â Bella knows youâre good friends with the older pack members. You even hang out at the Clearwaterâs with Charlie on Sundayâs during baseball season.
Bella knows sheâs fighting a losing battle. âYou still have time to think about it. Demitri should be getting there sometime tomorrow morning.â
âGreat. Just enough time to drive my car off the La Push cliffs.â You say dryly and Bella rolls her eyes.
She replies flatly, âThatâs not funny.â
You sigh for what feels like the thousandth time. âWasnât trying to be. Talk to you later Bells. Iâve⊠got a lot to think about.â The line goes dead as Bella stands still, mind still reeling from the unexpected turns the phone call took.
~
You hang up the phone feeling empty. Fucking Cullens. Of course they dragged Bella into another mess. When Jared shook you awake this morning and told you Jacob said Bella left with Alice you didnât want to believe it. Especially when he followed that up with their intended destination. And now youâve been dragged into this mess. The mess youâve tried your damnedest to avoid getting involved in.
Fuck you need a cigarette. You donât even care if Charlie comes home and catches you, thereâs not much more you could really do to disappoint him today. You wonder how youâre going to tell Paul and Jared. Logically you know theyâll do everything they can to protect you but you also donât want them to get on the Vultoriâs radar either, especially since they were responsible for wolves being hunted to near extinction. Theyâd probably wait to ambush him which in the long run probably would end poorly for Bella.
hey, i think we need to talk. You press send in your group chat with Paul and Jared before heading upstairs to get your hidden carton of cigarettes. You leave your phone on the charger wanting to decompress for a moment before having that conversation. You always thought it would be one of them that would have to break it off first, not you. Just as youâre leaving your room you hear your phone start to buzz but you ignore it thinking itâs one of the boys. Youâll call back in five after your smoke.
~
Alice freezes on the spot, a vision clouding over her consciousness. She sees you smoking a cigarette you think no one knows about by your back door. One moment you're standing alone and the next, Victoria is standing in front of you, startling a jump out of you. She watches as Victoria snaps your neck. Your body slumps down to the wet ground like a sack of potatoes. Victoria peers down at you before stepping over you to wait in the dark house for Charlie and Bella to return.
Alice gasps out of her vision, locking eyes with Edward already dialing Carlisleâs number. âWhat is it? What did you see?â Bella asks frantically, Edward had just shaken his head at her mid vision as he pulled his phone out.
âVictoria. Somethingâs about to happen. I just saw her kill Y/N before going inside to wait for you and Charlie. Sheâs planning on killing you one by one. Call Y/N right now, she needs the guys over there now.â Bellaâs never dialed your number so fast in her entire life.
âSheâs not answering.â Bella says frantically, pressing the call button again. Edward is already on the phone with Carlisle telling him to call Sam immediately. Bella starts to hyperventilate when the phone goes to voicemail again. She dials Jakeâs home phone, praying Billy answers.
âDidnât you say your visions of her are always false? So thereâs a good chance she doesnât immediately snap your sisterâs neck.â Felix adds unhelpfully again, sending Bella into a further panic. No scenario with her sister and Victoria is good.
âBlack residence.â She hears Jacobâs deep voice over the line. Relief floods Bellaâs veins, the hope of saving her sister renewed.
âJake! You need to get to my house right now. Y/Nâs in danger. Victoria is going to kill her.â Bella almost screams over the phone. She hears Jacob curse before the phone thuds, presumably against the wall, and Bella hears a door in the distance slam open. She faintly hears the fabric tearing off of Jacobâs body as he shifts and then silence. She hangs up and tries your phone again. Please please please, Bella thinks, please be okay.
~
The cigarette makes your head tingle with every drag you take. This was all so fucked up. You shouldâve threatened the Cullens from the start to leave you sister alone. Maybe sent her off to Jacksonville. Or boarding school. Now you are losing everything and everyone you care about, no matter what you choose. Either you die and leave everyone behind heartbroken with closure or you disappear and watch grief slowly eat them alive. Thereâs no good outcome but at least Charlie will have peace of mind. Maybe you can ask the vampire coming to make it look like an accident. Maybe you should just do it yourself before he gets here.Â
You think of Jared and Paul wondering how they would react. Surely theyâd try to hero you out of it but for how long? How long until their imprints come along and their priorities change? How long can you stay hiding on the Rez before you're found out? You think of the betrayal theyâll feel when they find out your accident wasnât an accident. You wonder if theyâll respect your choice to die by your own hand rather than someone elseâs. Thereâs a sharp turn in the road on the way to the Cullens house, no cell reception, not frequently used since they left. It would make sense if youâre going out there to look for Bella. Youâll be found eventually and Charlie can have his closure.
A twig snaps in the distance, catching your attention and bringing you out of your depressing thoughts. Thereâs a red headed woman standing at the treeline looking at you and you instantly know itâs the same redhead the boys have been hunting. You raise your hand and wave at her, wondering just how much trouble youâre in. The craziest part is you arenât afraid. Your clock is already ticking near its end so whatâs a few hours? You watch her approach as you blow out your final drag and crush the cigarette butt out with the toe of your shoe.
âBellaâs not here.â You state simply when sheâs in front of you. Her eyes are black pits as she stares back at you.
Her lips quirk into a small grin. âHow did you know Iâm looking for Bella?â âWell, I donât know you and Iâm really hoping you weren't here for Charlie.â You laugh, wrinkling your nose at the thought of Charlie dating someone so young.
âVictoria, nice to meet you. Tell Bella I said âhelloâ when you see her?â She doesnât let you even open your mouth to respond before she has your head tilted back and fangs lodged in your throat. Damn, you think, I really wanted to not be someoneâs dinner. Your vision goes black as the burning in your veins starts to spread from where sheâs still biting you.
~
Demitri has never been so confused in all his years as a vampire. This girlâs scent trail crosses itself, zigzagging all over the place, circling back to the same spots over and over again. Thereâs no clear trail for him to follow. Even her tenor leads him all over the place. Itâs like she disappears to a new spot every time he gets to the last spot it was in.Â
Heâs standing in the middle of a small stream trying to choose which scent path to follow when he hears multiple sets of feet approaching and the overwhelming smell of wet dog invades his senses. He stays in place, hands in his pockets as he tries to make out how many people are rapidly moving through the forest.
Itâs not people that emerge from the trees but rather large wolves, teeth bared ready to lunge. He didnât think there were wolves left, let alone so close to vampire territory. Well, it is the Cullens so their coexistence with their natural enemies doesnât seem too surprising.
Demitri raises his hands in a peaceful gesture. âIâm not here to cause any trouble. Iâm here looking for Y/N Swan for her sister. I canât tell which scent of hers is fresh and I apologize if I wandered somewhere I shouldnât be. I can call Bella if youâd like.â
One of the wolves in front nodded his head but the others remained ready to attack. They all watched him pull out his cell phone and click a few times before the dial tone filled the silence. âFelix, can you bring me to Isabella please.â Thereâs a grunt, âitâs for youâ and some rustling before a shaky âdid you find her?â that has all the wolves relaxing slightly.
âIsabella. It seems I have run into your lupine friends. No, I haven't found her. Her blood was in your home and the scent of another vampire was present.â Was Victoria still there?
âNo, the vampire was in Seattle without your sister.â Sheâs still missing? Did Victoria say anything?
âI disposed of her, she said she turned and left Y/N so she would kill you and Charlie.â Youâll be able to find her right? Before she wakes up?
âYes, I will find her before she wakes up.â Thank you Demitri. He hangs the phone up when Bella starts sniffling. âI smelled you at the Swanâs residence. Do you know where Y/N is?â Demitri watches one of the wolves convulse before starting to shrink. The hair recedes into his body and bones pop and shift into a more humanoid form. The muscular guy stands stark naked, his joints clicking and popping as he shakes his limbs out.
âYes. We found Y/N shortly after the red haired vampire bit her. She was chased off the cliffs and into the water while the others moved Y/N.â The man vaguely replied, trying to not give away too much information much to Demitriâs irritation.
âLook, she canât stay here with no guidance after waking up. She needs to be with vampires who can guide her through the newborn phase or be put out of her misery before she wakes. Whatever decision you make, Iâll leave peacefully with or without her. I have no desire to linger here longer than necessary.âÂ
There was a long silence and the man looked away, deep in thought. âBella said the Cullens are returning before she left. Can she stay with them?â Of course the Cullens are returning, Demitri refrains from rolling his eyes.
âIf they allow it, though, I doubt Carlisle would cast her away. When did you find her?â He really hopes sheâs not about to wake up alone, confused and thirsty.Â
âYesterday afternoon. Sheâs in the Cullensâ house. We moved her after we found her. Figured it was far away enough to be safe.â Demitri raises his eyebrows, so she's around halfway through her transformation already.
âDonât look so surprised. Sheâs not a wolf but sheâs still pack. Sheâs our friend. Just because sheâs turning into a leech doesnât mean we are going to abandon her when sheâs vulnerable. We canât hold something against her that wasn't her fault.â The wolfman scowls at Demitri offendedly.
âI admire your sense of kinship. That kind of loyalty is hard to come by these days. Sheâs lucky to have you all.â He shrugs his shoulders nonchalantly. âI do believe I know the way to the Cullensâ residence. Is there anyone there with her?â
âYes, some of our packmates are there with her. They know youâre coming.â He eyes Demitri for a moment before turning and walking back into the forest. The wolves all back up into the treeline and Demitri backs up out of the creek as well, distancing himself from where they disappeared to.
~
Just as the wolf shifter has said, Demetri hears the two wolves' heart beats as he approaches the Cullen house and some music playing softly somewhere inside the house. They are waiting for him on the porch when he steps through the trees. They look similar to the man he spoke with and are in matching cut off jean shorts. They donât look overly thrilled to see him and Demetri raises his hands hoping to keep things peaceful. He doesnât care about whatever issues there are between them and the Cullens.
âThey said you killed the red head.â The shorter of the two says eyeing Demetri.
âYes, itâs against vampiric law to abandon a transitioning vampire youâve sired.â Demetri wonders what Bella did to piss off Victoria so much that her sister was collateral damage. âMay I see your friend?â
The two wolves eyed him for a moment, before curtly nodding. âWeâve been trying to keep her comfortable.â The taller one led the way through the house while the shorter one stayed on the porch, actively scanning the treeline for any threat that may wander too close to the abandoned house.
The girl was laid out on a makeshift pallet in the living area in a nest of pillows and blankets, the rest of the room empty except a cell phone playing the music Demetri heard softly. The two wolves have taken great care into the comfort of the transitioning girl and Demetri is again taken back by the level of kinship the wolves have for this human. He wonders which one sheâs mated to. He crouches down next to her, careful not to disturb the nest around her as he examines the bite mark on her neck. Itâs mostly healed but not yet scarred over so it tracks with the timeline of them finding her and being about mid transformation. The wolves mustâve changed her out of her bloody clothes, the zip up sheâs wearing is clean and only faintly smells of the wolves guarding her.
âY/N,â Demetri says softly, âyouâre almost done. Just a little bit longer and youâll be done. Your sister is safe, your father is safe. You donât need to fight it.â
âWait, she can actually hear everything still?â Demetri glances over his shoulder and one of the shifters is red in the face. Demetri looks at the phone and then back to the man, cocking his head in a silent question. âWe didnât know if she could or not, the Cullens never called us back. We didnât want her to suffer in silence if she could still hear.â
Demetriâs mouth twitched in amusement, âEvery transformation is different, some are more lucid than others. We believe it depends on the damage inflicted before they are bit but itâs hard to know for sure.â The man nods, flushing a deeper red. Demetri rises from his crouched position and heads back towards the entrance where the other wolf was keeping guard. He tilts his head back towards the house when the man eyes him suspiciously. Demetri leans against the pillar supporting the porch roof and the man nods curtly before heading back in to be with the girl and other shifter.
Demetri hears them whispering inside about her being able to hear them as he fishes his phone out. He sends a text to Felix asking him to tell Isabella that he found her sister and that sheâs mid transformation. He takes a deep breath and sighs before dialing the reception phone.
âGianna, I need to speak with Aro.â He waits while she scuttles to the throne room with the cell phone.
âDemetri, I did not expect a call from you. Have you found the elder Swan?â Aro inquires.
âYes, I found her. A nomad with a grudge against the Cullens got to her before I made it to Forks.â
âAh yes, Felix informed us earlier of the vision Alice had. How does she fair?â Demetri pinches his lips, annoyed they didnât inform him before.
âIâd say she has maybe a day before she wakes. Iâd suggest letting her stay and adapt before she visits.â Aro hums in response and while Demetri is annoyed he came out here for nothing it does beat being stuck on guard duty in the castle.
âAh, yes, a newborn in Volterra could be a dangerous situation. Very well. Remain there until the Cullens return and instruct them to bring her by when she has a handle on her bloodlust. We would still like to formally meet her.â Aro doesnât wait for a response before the line goes dead. Demetri sighs deeply and doesnât let himself think about the annoyance heâs feeling.
~
Y/N mustâve been farther along than originally thought because the Cullens had not arrived before she woke leaving Demetri and the two wolves to help her. The three of them had been playing cards on the other side of the room not noticing her red eyes opening. She laid there for a moment, recalling what had happened before she fell into the fiery pit of darkness and what she had heard while in it. Victoria had bit her and now she's a vampire. Paul and Jared stayed with her while she was turning. Bella and Charlie are safe. She doesnât know who the other man that came is but he was encouraging.
She slowly sits up, the fabric rustling beneath her but she could hear them sliding against each other clearly. All three heads snap towards her direction, the card game forgotten. Demetri places himself between her and the boys unsure if sheâll attack in her uncontrolled bloodlust.
âY/N?â Paul asks hopefully, taking a small step towards her.
She cocks her head, her eyes unfocused as she watches the dust swirl around them in the air.. âWell who else would it be?â She snorts, snapping back into attention with a roll of her eyes and rising from her sitting position, off put that the normal pops of her joints are missing. Paul sucks in a breath when she meets his eyes, his jaw slack. She looks at Jared in confusion and hears his heart skip a beat, the same look on his face as Paulâs.Â
âJesus Christ, I canât look that different now. Is it the eyes? Why are you both looking at me like that?â She looks between the two of them, confused and a little self conscious. She crosses her arms over her chest starting to feel overwhelmed and the burning sensation in her throat becoming unbearable.
âThey must be enthralled by your beauty. My name is Demetri. We need to quell your thirst before the bloodlust overtakes you.â He turns to look at Paul and Jared, âIt might be better if you stayed here, we shouldnât be long.â
This seems to snap them out of the stupor they were stuck in, both of them immediately start protesting. Demetri holds a hand up to stop them, âI understand your desire to protect your friend but itâs for your safety you donât accompany us. The bloodlust makes it hard to stop once started, especially for newborns. We will stick to the forest east of here to not impede your territory again.â
âWill you still be here when I get back?â She asks nervously, afraid this is the last time her friends can stand to see her now sheâs a vampire.
âOf course we will.â Paul says immediately, stepping forward wanting to hug her but thinking better of it. He tries to ignore the sad smile she gives them, hoping she didnât take him not hugging her the wrong way. They watch her and Demetri disappear into the trees wanting desperately to not be apart from her.
~
They returned a few hours later, Y/N covered in blood and with a dejected look on her face. Demetri seemed jovial and in good spirits still. He had received word from Felix that the Cullens and the human Swan had finally left Italy which means the other Cullens should be returning soon to wait for them and he can finally leave.
Paul and Jared stood up in an instant, offering fresh clothes they somehow acquired in their absence. Demetri walked past them into the house, letting them have their long anticipated conversation. From what he gathered during their hunt Y/N was their lover before she was turned. Sheâs afraid theyâll reject her now that sheâs a vampire even though they loved her as a human.
Jared and Paul wait until youâre dressed again to step forward and envelop you in a tight hug. They rest their heads on your shoulders, squeezing you tight, their relief of not losing you overwhelming.
âWe were so worried when we heard Jake say you were in danger.â Jared murmured against the ice cold skin of your neck, finding it doesnât bother him like he was afraid it would. âWe were already on our way after getting your text.â
âAnd then when we found youâŠâ Paul trails off not being able to finish his thought and just squeezes you tighter, rubbing his face into the junction of your neck and shoulder. He doesnât want to remember the worry he felt that you were going to break things off with them and then the despair of knowing you were in danger. The anguish seeing you on the ground and how they could smell your blood. How he could only chase Victoria so far until the rest of the pack took over so he could get back to you and Jared. The mixed horror and relief he felt when they realized you were transforming into their sworn enemy and the shame of being too late to save you.
âThank you for taking care of me.â You whisper, your hands snaking around their torsos as best as you can with your arms still constricted by theirs.
âWe wouldnât leave our girl like that.â Paul didnât stop rubbing his face against you like a pleased cat.
âYou arenât disgusted Iâm a vampire now?â You ask in a small voice, the anxiety eating at you increasing when you hear their hearts thud louder.
âWe meant what we said while you were transforming. We love you and we donât want to lose you, even if that means you turn into a le- vampire.â Paul says fiercely, squeezing you again. Jared pulls his head off your shoulder and gives you a kiss on the top of your head and smiles down at you.
âI didnât think it was possible for you to get more beautiful.â Jared grins, lightly tugging on a loose strand of your hair playfully.
âI donât stink now do I?â You cringe, remembering them complain incessantly about how much they thought the Cullens stunk. They donât smell bad to you, like the forest on a warm day.Â
âNo, you smell pretty much the same. Maybe a little sweeter like when youâre ovul- ow.â Paul rubs the back of his head where Jared slapped him. âWhat? Itâs the truth.â
âDude.â Jared gives him an unimpressed look. Paul just goes back to nosing your neck and you can feel the grin on his lips.
âI love you guys too, so much. I was so worried you wouldnât want me as a vampire.â Your lip wobbles as you look up at Jared, his brown eyes full of adoration. You hear their hearts skip a beat and feel Paulâs arm tighten around you again, pressing himself against your back.
âWanna know a secret?â Paul whispers in your ear, planting kisses along your neck while they wait for your answer.
Jared grins down at you as you nod and you hear their heartbeats quicken. âWhen you woke up we imprinted on you.â He smiles tucking the stand of hair heâd been playing with earlier behind your ear. His smile widens when your face lights up with surprised happiness.
All of your worries disappear. The ones about them finding their imprint and leaving you, the ones about becoming a vampire and losing them, all of them. Your boys are still your boys. You slump into Jaredâs chest holding him and Paul closer to you, elated this has all somehow worked out.
me when i get asked why i suddenly dislike a character (i canât tell them itâs because i read a fanfic where said character made y/nâs life miserable and now i have personal beef with them)
Very well said.
Nesta (parody)
Prompt: Before leaving Velaris you drunkenly sing a diss towards your former lovers âmateâ
Pairing: Cassian x summercourt!reader

authors note: this song had been plaguing me for weeks. aye yo beeennnnnnyyy
You could pinpoint the moment your life started turning to shit. Everything had come crashing down when Rhys got the inner circle involved with the Archeron sisters. You first noticed it when the meeting with the Queens was held at the Archeron estate across the Wall. From the moment he laid eyes on her his whole body tensed and he only looked away from her briefly the entire meeting. His words were heated as he argued with her but still promised to take care of them during the war. He brushed it off when you brought it up later but you noticed the small wedge forming in your relationship. His walls were always up and keeping you out. Then, when the sisters were dragged into the cauldron he stirred when Nesta was screaming. Another cord snapped between the two of you because he had stayed fully unconscious when you were screaming minutes before.
Then you find out heâd been visiting the Archeron estate. You donât exactly know what went on between the two but there was a tension. Cassian refused to talk to you about it. It all came to head when he was healed enough to visit Nesta and Elaine at the House of Wind. He told you in complete certainty that he thought Nesta was his mate, not you, and that it was Cauldron ordained. That there must have been some mix up between the two of you. That it was Nesta and not you.Â
After that it was like you couldnât escape them. You saw them everywhere. In the training yard. At Ritaâs. In the House of Wind. At the River House. You couldnât stand it. You also couldnât stand the pitying looks from everyone when they ran into you. You knew you couldnât hide out at a friend's apartment in the city forever. There was no way you were staying in Velaris after the utter betrayal you felt. You were past tears at this point, more angry and confused because what the actual fuck? So, you planned to leave for your homeland where you knew your cousin would welcome you with open arms.
Which brings you to now. Sitting in Ritaâs one last time with your friends not in the inner circle. Itâs singleâs night which means the inner circle will not be showing up and itâs safe for you to be here without running into them. Itâs safe to say youâre drunk. Like extremely drunk. They bring a stage out for people to do karaoke, something new the owners are trying out to keep things exciting. Youâre having a good time with your friends, dancing and laughing while people sing their songs. Your friends all take a turn, downing a drink before and after their songs.
You shouldâve seen it coming when they put a fresh drink in your hand and push you up on stage. The problem is you donât have a song to sing because all the songs you would sing have already been sung. So free styling it is. Youâre never coming back here again so what is there to really lose? You down your drink and hold the voice amplifier up to your mouth, grinning ear to ear.
Ayo Nesta, (ppft)
Believe me,
If I was with Cassian
I would still be treatin' him
Better than you.
Better than you.
Nesta, I love summer (oh)
But if I was with Cassian
I would still be treatin' him
Better than you.
Better than you.
Nesta Nesta Archeron,
Saw you in Velaris,
Saw you in the training yard,
Think we can all move on.
Nesta Nesta Archeron,
Seein' all your nasty glares,
Kinda hurts me downlow.
Kinda hurts me downlow (Yeah).
Nesta, you gotta believe me (pfft)
But if I was with Cassian,
I would still be treatin' him
BДtter than you.
Better than you.
Nesta, oh I love summer
But if I was with Cassian
I would still be treatin' him
Better than you.
Better than you (Yeah).
Thereâs a few stunned faces in the crowd, shocked at your audacity. A few jaws dropped in an amused way like they canât believe they just witnessed that. You laugh in the voice amplifier and hand it to the next person waiting before rejoining your friends and accepting your next drink and downing it like the others did when they came off the stage. What you donât spot is a familiar blond head on the other side of the bar as your friends lead you towards the door deciding that maybe itâs time to take you home. Except you donât make it home with them, laughing and dancing away from them in the street before they can catch you youâre already winnowing away to the summer court.
You land in your room in the Summer Courtâs palace (a small miracle) and stagger over to your bed. Sinking into the plush comforter you fall into a drunken sleep, blissfully unaware of the things transgressing in Velaris.
~
Apparently in the hours you slept word of your song spread through Velaris like a wildfire. Its catchy and audacious lyrics somehow become a popular joke with the residents. People who saw it performed at Ritaâs couldnât get it out of their heads and couldnât help but mumble it as they went about their day. Mor avoided the inner circle all day not wanting to be the one to have to tell them about it, or even worse show them her memory of it. She knew she would eventually have to but she was going to hold out as long as physically possible.
It didnât take long for it to reach the inner circle, Azrielâs shadows bringing him news of a song about Cassian the entire town is singing. He sends them out for more information on it while he goes to find his brothers. Theyâre in the training yard sparring when he does find them, smiles spreading across their faces as they welcome him.
âHave you heard the song yet?â He asks them, still a little confused at where it came from.
âCare to be more specific?â Rhys asks, tilting his head in amusement. Oh boy.
Azriel rolls his eyes, âThe one about Cassian.â
âThereâs a song about me?â Cassian perks up, a smug grin plastered across his face. âOf course there is, whatâs it about? My good looks? My ferocity on the battlefield?â
Azrielâs shadow dances in his ear, whispering an update on the situation. He blinks in surprise, Rhys and Cassian waiting in anticipation to hear. âItâs⊠about you and Nesta. It was sung at Ritaâs last night apparently.â Both Cassian and Rhys jerk back in surprise, not expecting that.
âMor was at Ritaâs last night, letâs ask her.â Rhys starts striding away, sure heâll get to the bottom of this. Cassian and Azriel trail a step behind him. Azriel left the part out where it was Y/N singing it but theyâll know soon enough.
Finding Mor was a bit of a challenge but eventually they did find her in the Rainbow district. They all saw the smirks when passerbys saw Cassian, the same tune being hummed after seeing him. It was pretty catchy, the bat boys couldnât deny it.
âMor, you were at Ritaâs last night? You saw the song performed right?â Mor sighs and nods, refusing to meet Cassianâs eyes. Thereâs a moment of silence as she shows Rhys before he snorts out a laugh. The shoulder jerks as youâre saying the Nesta Nesta Archeron shouldnât be as funny as it is. He can see why everyoneâs spun up about it. He shows it to Cassian and Azriel, starting to feel a bit bad for Cassian.
Azriel squeezes his eyes shut trying not to laugh, you werenât being malicious about it but you were definitely way too drunk to stop yourself. His shadows had brought him updates after you left the River House. How youâd cry yourself to sleep at your friendâs apartment every day, the hollowness of your eyes, how you barely ate, how your friend bought a bunch of kitchenware for you to break to get through your frustrations. He knew youâd seen Cassian and Nesta out in Velaris and how it destroyed what little youâd built back up for yourself. Heâd also seen you start to heal and come to terms with it all. How you explored the city as if youâd never see it again. Heâd told Rhys about it all, the two of them worried for their friend even though their bond with Cassian ran deeper. You still mattered to them.
Cassianâs jaw was hanging in disbelief. He wasnât sure if he should be upset that you're singing about Nesta like that or impressed youâre basically challenging her for him. Stupid male brain. He feels shame deep in his belly. While he was with Nesta heâd just left you to hurt and heal by yourself. He really canât blame you for lashing out like this, if he can even call it a lash out. You looked three sheets to the wind, almost too drunk to function. Sweat shone on your body like youâd been tearing up the dance floor like you always do at Ritaâs. He could also see how tired you looked. The deep bags under your eyes, the sunken in of your cheeks from the obvious lack of care youâd been taking of yourself.
âI should speak with her shouldnât I?â Cassian sighs, defeated like heâd just been chastised by Rhysâs mother.
âGunna be kinda hard. She went back to the Summer Court.â Azriel stuffs his hands in his pockets feeling a little bad for his brother. The one place Cassian canât follow you to. Youâd spent the last hundred years in Velaris away from your family, only seeing them a few weeks at a time alone because of Cassianâs ban.Â
Cassian deflates further not knowing what to do or how to make things right. He still loves you, how could he not after so long together and the mating bond with Nesta is there drawing him to her. Worst of all the Cauldron damned song is still bouncing around his head.
when in rome
i didn't have anywhere else to post this so here
Prompt: Going to Italy to save your sisterâs exboyfriend is not how you wanted to spend your weekend.
Pairing: Reader x Felix
WC: 2,818
âBella, you and Alice run ahead to find Edward. Iâll ditch the car and catch up with you guys.â You urge your half sister as the car comes to a complete stop around all the tourists heading to the square. Bella doesnât need to be told twice, leaping out of the car and taking off running.
Alice eyes you in the mirror suspiciously. âOh please, like I want Bella going into a vampire den alone. Iâll catch up.â Alice fully turns around in her seat, shock written all over her face. âYou guys are literally terrible at being inconspicuous. I figured it out before Bella even moved to Forks.â You roll your eyes and throw your hands up.
âIf we are already inside by the time you catch up, stay in the square. They donât need to know about you.â Alice already regrets bringing you, wishing youâd gotten back to the Swan house ten minutes later than you did. But that stupid mongrel begged you to go with them to watch over Bella and Bella stupidly agreed with him. Youâre a wild card to her, never showing up in her visions so she never knows whatâs actually going to happen when youâre involved. Another reason why she wishes you didnât come but Bella wouldnât have it any other way.
âEasy enough. Can I have your wallet?â You ask and Alice throws her head back, letting out a laugh. âWhat? If I donât make it in time I can get us Italian accessories. Think of the leather Alice.â Alice grins at you, handing over her wallet before climbing out of the car.
You jump over the seat into the driver's seat of the convertible. âI knew I liked you. Iâm a size 0 if you find anything good.â Alice says knowing you wonât have time to catch up with them until later since noon is now only a few minutes away. Itâs better this way anyways. She leaves you in the car surrounded by the sea of people to chase down your sister.
You finally manage to pull the convertible into an alleyway and make your way down the path with the other festival goers. You donât see your sister or Alice at the entrance of the clock tower so you wander down a side street full of small shops and bistros. Thereâs a spare red cloak thrown over a railing and you look around for anyone it could belong to before snatching it up as you walk by it. Throwing it over your shoulders, you wander into a boutique full of different accessories. Thereâs a pretty scarf like the one Alice was wearing and you decide you need one too. Itâs not like Carlilse canât afford it so you donât really feel bad. Thereâs some matching gloves on the table below the scarf rack and you decide that those would be lovely as well. Maybe coming to Italy wasnât entirely bad. You grab a handbag that was in the same cream background as Aliceâs scarf for her, thinking it would look nice with her outfit. You swipe Carlisleâs card, giddy the transaction went through successfully.
Your next stop was the bistro down the street for a snack until Alice calls you telling you they are done. The two elderly Italian women sitting next to you are so cute gossiping over their espresso and biscotti. The waiter brings you the bottle of wine you ordered and tells you in his sexy accent that your bruschetta will be out shortly. Yeah, you think, maybe you do like Italy. Cute boys and youâre able to legally drink? Total score. You feel bad your sister is somewhere in the vampire police den but Alice wouldnât have let her out of the car if things didnât work out right? Everythings going to be fine, you tell yourself. And what are you supposed to do? Traipse into a vampire den saying you're Bellaâs sister and get them in more trouble?
You pull your book from the tote bag you had barely enough time to grab before Bella was dragging you out the door back in Forks. All thatâs in there is twenty bucks, your book, your sweater, Aliceâs new purse and the granola bar the airline gave you. You sip your wine as you read your book, enjoying the midday sun Edward was going to expose himself with.
Everything was going great until you got the uneasy tingle on the back of your neck like youâre being watched. Your tab had been paid for a while and the bistroâs starting to get busier so you figure itâs just other patrons waiting for your table. Corking your half drank bottle, you wander down the street looking for a bench you could continue reading at, hoping thereâs maybe a park nearby. As you walk down the street the uneasy feeling subsides and you wonder how long Bella and Alice are going to be.
As youâre passing a narrow alleyway a cold hand clamps over your mouth and everything blurs around you. When your vision finally clears youâre in the iron grip of a grey cloaked figure thatâs impervious to your struggling. You kick behind you at his shins, stop on his foot, and thrash in his arms to no avail. Youâre hoisted over his holder and everything blurs around you again. You realize youâre moving at vampire speed, probably through alleyways in the city. Screaming out you continue to wiggle and kick your legs as best as you can, pounding on his back with your free hand, the other clutching your tote for dear life.
âLet me go you mother fucker!â You yell still trying to harm him with your fists and feet. The vampire carrying you just grunts.Â
You bite his hip angrily which does make him falter for a second. âDid you just bite me, human?â He asks incredulously, not believing your feralness.
âLet me go!â You struggle in his grasp but he keeps going, running through god knows what, all you know is it stinks wherever you are. You grip the half drunk bottle of wine in your hand once you enter a more lit area. You lift yourself up from your dangling position and swing across your body and over your shoulder as hard as you can to connect with the back of your kidnappers head. The bottle shatters and he stumbles a few steps not expecting more violence from you.Â
âWhat the hell is wrong with you?â He yells at you, shocked at your behavior. You start stabbing the jagged end of the bottle into his back until it is so broken you can risk more without cutting yourself.
âMe? Youâre fucking kidnapping me!â You scream back at him, resuming your thrashing. He finally halts in front of giant stone doors, pushing them open with one hand and not releasing you until youâre in the room and the doors shut behind him.Â
âSantiago, what is the meaning of this?â A voice demands from behind you. You rip yourself out of his grasp stumbling a few steps away.Â
âY/N!â Bella exclaims and you whip around to where your sister, Alice and Edward are all standing gobsmacked. You rush over to stand with them, away from Santiago.
âMaster that human is a terror! She bit me! She broke a wine bottle over my head! She tried stabbing me with the broken glass!â Santiago pointed at you, trying to explain himself.
âYou fucking grabbed me walking down the street and didnât say shit, you asshole!â You yell at him pointing an accusing finger back at him. The dark haired vampire lets out a startled laugh and your whirl around seeing Edward is trying to suppress a smile.
âAh, dear. Iâm sorry for Santiagoâs behavior. We sent him to collect you so you could stand trial.â The vampire tries to explain coming to stand before you. He holds his hand out to yours, raising his eyebrows. You give him your hand and he looks utterly confused grasping it.
âStand trial for what? I donât claim him.â You point to Edward, bewildered this is even a problem involving you.
âFor knowing of our existence you daft, insolent girl.â The blonde sitting on a throne behind the brunette snarls at you.
âWe learned of you from Aliceâs thoughts. Your knowledge of vampires.â The vampire let go of your hand breezing back towards the steps leading to the thrones.
âBecause you guys do such a fantastic job at hiding it.â You roll your eyes and shake your head. These people are somehow even more conspicuous than the Cullens are.
âYou didnât say anything.â Bella mumbles hurt, eyes filled with betrayal.
âIf Mr Emoâs âThis is the skin of a killer, Bellaâ didnât give you the ick I doubt anything I said wouldâve changed your mind.â You raise your eyebrows, knowing damn well your stubborn sister wouldâve only pursued him harder.
Her jaw drops and eyes almost bug out of her skull. âHow do you know about that?â Her face is red and Edward looks a little embarrassed. A few of the vampires across the room try to hide their laughter but fail. You glance over, catching the eyes of the taller one and his face falls.
You turn back to your sister and shrug, âYou talk in your sleep sometimes.â You remember the night she mumbled that and how you almost peed yourself laughing.
âEnough.â The blond stands and you roll your eyes again. You wonder how old he is to be this miserable heâs taking it out on everyone else.
âAro.â The other vampire sitting on a throne holds his hand out. The vampire, Aro, rushes over to him, grasping his hand.Â
âHow delightful! Congratulations Felix!â He beams over at the guards who were laughing, the big one still staring at you. âIt looks like everyone gets to live today!â You wonder what the hell he means by that. âYoung Y/N must stay but everyone else may leave.â What the double hell?
âUm, Bella canât just go home without me? What is she supposed to tell our Dad? That she just left me in Italy? Thatâs not going to fly.â You feel yourself getting angry, who the hell are these people to tell you that you canât leave.
âAh, that is a valid point. Perhaps returning home for a short period of time so you can get your affairs in order would be beneficial to keeping unwanted eyes looking into your sudden disappearance. We will have Gianna draft up a fake internship invitation.â Aro claps his hands in delight, coming down to hold his hands out to grasp yours again. âFelix, Demetri, show our friends to a waiting area until they can depart when the sun goes down. It was so delightful meeting you both, we will be seeing you dears soon.â
The big vampire and the one standing next to him both moved towards the door, Edward glaring at the cocky smirk the big one sends his way. You wonder what you missed. You also kind of wish you still had that wine if you have to stay until the sun goes down.
âMiss Y/N, if youâd come with me for a few moments. I would like to speak with you privately.â The big one offers you his arm and you feel Aliceâs tiny hand nudge you towards him. You take his arm glancing back at her but she gives you an encouraging smile as they continue walking in the opposite direction of you two. Bella looks like she wants to protest but Edward shakes his head at her.
âAre you Felix or Demetri?â You ask the muscular vampire as he leads you away.
He chuckles, âFelix but you may call me whatever youâd like, bambolina.â You wonder why he was being congratulated earlier and what it has to do with you and why you almost werenât allowed to leave.
You enter a room after walking with him through a maze of halls. The stone walls are decorated with paintings of landscapes and scenes of ancient Rome. The pantheon and coliseum in their heydays, a gladiator fighting, the seven hills. They were all beautiful. There was a bookshelf full of books and a seating area, a dresser. You realize this must be his bedroom minus the unnecessary bed.
He leads you over to the seating area, opting to sit on it next to you when you settle on the couch. Thereâs a brief silence where you stare at each other waiting for the other to start speaking. You have nothing to say not knowing why youâre here but you know itâs because of him so you figure he can speak first.
Felix must catch on because he clears his throat, âHow much do you know about vampires?â He asks hesitantly not sure where to start.
âNot much. I figured them out because their cover story sucks and they are kinda strange. Adopted siblings all with the same colored eyes, yeah right.â You scoff, shaking your head. âThe old legends about vampires say you guys are ice cold, strong, fast. I figure since they are also ice cold that the rest would be true too. Alice said something about visions and Bella had to run ahead because heâd hear her coming. So I donât really know why if Bellaâs louder than she would be.â You shrug, you didnât really care enough for clarifying questions. âAlice only found out I knew when we were in town.â
âSo not much then. Yes, we have super strength and speed. We can hear, see, and smell better as well. The Cullens and a few other covens are vegetarians, meaning they drink animal blood instead of human blood which is why their eyes are gold instead of red.â Felix pauses and you nod along, your eyes a little unfocused as you think through his explanation. âSome vampires have additional gifts that vary from vampire to vampire. Alice has visions of the future, Edward can hear peopleâs thoughts, Iâm stronger than the average vampire.â
âOh, thatâs what they meant then.â You nod again, understanding a little bit better.
Felix hesitates before continuing. âFrom your lack of knowledge I assume you donât know of mates.â He pauses and lets you shake your head confirming you donât know. âItâs like soulmates but for vampires.â
He watches your eyebrows raise as you slowly nod, putting the final pieces of the puzzle together. âAnd I take it that Iâm yours?â He nods his head unsure of what to say. âWhich is why that guy wasnât going to let me leave.â
He snorts a laugh, âThat guy is one of the coven leaders, Aro. And no, originally we were going to keep you here. Itâs difficult to be apart from your mate. The urge to protect your mate is very strong and since youâre human it heightens that. Having you leave to somewhere I could not ensure your safety adds a level of anxiety but uprooting your entire life without notice I believe would create an animosity that I donât wish for us to start with. If you hadnât spoken up I wouldâve even if it wasnât what I wanted.â He explains in a seriousness that surprises you.
You give a small smile. âThatâs very thoughtful of you.âÂ
He smiles back before responding, âWe only get one mate. I wasn't going to screw it up in the first ten minutes.â Heâs overjoyed you didnât outright reject him.Â
âDo you have a phone so we could talk when Iâm in Forks?â You ask almost shyly, youâd never had to ask for someoneâs number before. Forks is so small, everyone knows everyone.
âI donât but I will acquire one so we can stay in touch.â Felix promises even more elated you want to get to know him more.
The two of you talk for a little bit longer before he leads you back through the maze of hallways to where your sister and the Cullens are waiting. Felix bows deeply and kisses the top of your hand, smiling and saying âWe will talk soon, tesoro.â You smile and wave goodbye before entering the hallway and going to stand with your sister.
Bella almost squeezes the life out of you, hugging you so hard. You laugh, reassuring her youâre fine and unharmed. You wonder whatâs all going to happen now, how you are going to tell Charlie youâre leaving. Originally after graduating this year, you were going to just go to college in Seattle to stay close to home but now you have to return here. Will you have to become a vampire? Felix never said explicitly but you figure he wonât just let you die of old age. So many unknowns for now but one thing you do know- you still wish you had that wine.
no offense but bucky not remembering what he does as the winter soldier makes his & samâs rivalry so much funnier
sam: you know im STILL not over the time when you ripped out my carâs steering wheel!
bucky: the time i WHAT
sam increasingly realizes he can just say whatever tf he wants & buckyâll be like
Sam: I canât believe you stabbed Caesar
Bucky:
âI canât believe you shot 2Pacâ
This just keeps getting better and better
So, I was listening to a bop the other day while worshiping, and this came into my mind and I literally could not function until I posted it.
I just wanted Steve to die in Buckyâs arms and to get queerbaited one final time is that too fucking much to ask
