Inscribing Spirit I

This project is very personal and dear to my heart. It represents my own self beginning and initiation into a more true version of the practioner that I am.

Inspired by various aspects of Nigerian literature and culture. Most notably Ògbójú Ọdẹ nínú Igbó Irúnmọlẹ̀ (Forest of a Thousand Dameons) by D.O. Fagunwa, the practice of Uli, in which women adorn each other’s bodies with signs and symbols as a way to prepare them for major events in their lives, and the invoking of spirits and deities in Ìṣẹ̀ṣe, ‘Inscribing Spirit’ combines, who I was within my ancestry, who I am now and who I am to become.

Using cloth that was used to make clothes for my Grandfathers funeral as a way to stay connected to my lineage and recent ancestors.

About ‘Super Sonic’

Improvisation…the sound of freedom and spirit. It moves through the body, moves through the mind, moves you toward the soul. As it decorates time, the ephemeral unspeakable moment, the cymatic dance of vibrations captured within these images is brought to life and made visible by strings of light.

Intuitively taken, these images capture Jazz in the free form nature in which it resides. The fluidity of colour and movement resembles the freedom found within the music. Jazz, the New Music, is deeply connected and rooted within the spirit, something that remains unbroken despite many attempts.

The life force of intuition and Jazz is forever entangled. The moment in which these images are taken, a chord within self and source is struck. A lighting bolt connecting my body into rhythm and my spirit into the syncopation. The music calls and my camera responds.
