Shion giggles to herself and slides her card with her information on it to Vaira. As she walks away she glides her hand one Vaira lower back, causing a jump from Vaira.

Vaira quickly rushes over to her desk and looks for the card, hastily puts Shion information in and sends her one singular text.

“I need you - Vaira”

A few seconds goes by and she gets an answer.

I genuinely can not stand when there’s a black character in a TV show, especially if it’s a black woman character and she’s shipped with a well-known (male) character that’s beloved by the fandom, but the fandom treats her horribly.

I’ve seen this with every fandom I have been in, and each time it aggressively gets worse. For example, Damon and Bonnie from The Vampire Diaries. I have not read the books, but I have been told they did get together in them, and if I am not mistaken, I believe Ian was at least interested in the idea of Bonnie and Damon being together. When watching the show, you can see the chemistry; it just rubs off on each other. Yes, everyone knows Damon is a problematic character, but when he cares, he cares hard, and that especially goes for Bonnie. I wish the writers (Julie Plec) weren’t cowards and allowed us as an audience to see that side of their relationship blossom.

Then, with Mel and Jay from Arcane, the disgusting things I have seen this fandom do, the lengths that they go to treat Mel as an abuser in the relationship? To treat Mel as trash and not a character with complex qualities, just like everyone else in the show. Which is why I will forever side-eye any and every JayVik shipper. I do not care if you’re not the one perpetuating the stereotypes on Mel, but you being a shipper and seeing fellow shippers be distasteful; the least you can do is call them out on their behavior and make sure you’re not a safe space for them. Some fanfic writers have the nerve to write her as some aggressive black woman, and even Jay as aggressive sometimes, and Victor as the docile, could never hurt a fly character. Which is wrong, it’s disturbing, and it is racism.

Many fandom spaces are full of misogynoir and people who do not care to unpack their ignorance, even pick up a book and see why that is. Two authors I could easily recommend to people would be Bell Hooks and Toni Morrison. You have to do the work on unlearning racist and misogynistic behaviors because it is so deeply rooted in fandoms and other communities.

Whenever a black person decides to ship a black character and a non-black character together, I have seen many non-black people try to correct them, saying, “Oh, they’re just friends, he/she wouldn’t date them.” Are you the writer of the show? No, so what makes it right for you to police that person?

This goes with The Bear fandom and how people treat sydcarmy shippers. Why is it so shocking to you that people ship those two characters together? I personally haven't seen the show fully, but from the many clips I've seen of those two, I can see why people ship them, and even if I couldn’t, it's still not my place to police a person if it’s not doing any harm to anyone, or even the characters.

A lot of people love to humble black shippers and characters and force us into a box of some sort. While their counterparts get a safe space to be themselves.

With the Bridgerton fandom and their mistreatment of Michaela Stirling. It’s not just lesbianphobia, it’s racism, it’s misogyny. I see a lot of white lesbians and non-black lesbians in general forget to mention that racism plays a big role in why people want Michael Stirling and not Michaela Stirling. There are people in this fandom who will use AI and turn Michaela back into a man, but only a white man. As if the Kilmartin and Stirling families aren’t full of black people. I’m not interested in excuses either because more racism will go dismissed.

A lot of people don’t care to realize that if these problems do not get called out in fandoms, then we’ll have a situation like the Percy Jackson fandom and The Flash. As someone who grew up with both of those things, I am extremely tired of seeing the mistreatment of the actors and their characters. You don’t care about black women, you don’t even care about the character, you just want to insert yourself in these situations because of another character you love. A lot of white people have that problem, and we see it a lot in BookTok. I have seen it all my life.

From Sunlight to Moonshine

Mel has been waiting for this moment her entire life. Since infancy, she’s been trained in the ways of royalty, in the ways of caring for her kingdom. 

The Medarda Kingdom is a notorious matriarchy; each Queen has a legacy all her own. And today, Mel will make her way and carve her name into the throne her mother sat on for all her life.

The regal woman stands before her now, dripping in gold and diamonds—wrapped in a deep red gown. For the first time in years, her eyes are soft as she looks upon her daughter. 

“You look beautiful, Mel.” She praises with great warmth, reaching out to touch Mel’s face as she admired the beauty of her only daughter. 

Kino was adored for her party-boy ways and wise control of the merchant circles. But Mel was the kingdom’s darling. The apple of their eye. So much so that her birthday is a kingdom-wide celebration, gold and white banners with the Medarda emblem fly around the major cities and even the small hovels as villagers sing praises to their now future queen. 

She has to look the part, so Queen Ambessa commissioned a stunning white gown that accentuated her traditional tattoos.

It is layers of the finest fabric possible, with a crystal-embedded bodice and long sleeves that have been cut out to show off her arms. The coronation gown is equal parts flattering and ethereal, the perfect combination for Mel. Her locs are pulled into an intricate rose updo, and dewy gold makeup graces her pretty features. Ambessa hums with pride. 

“You are perfect. Nothing will ruin this day. Nothing.” Ambessa promises. But little does she know….not all is as it seems. 

Before leaving her chambers for the last time as the Princess of the Medarda Kingdom, the woman glances back at the balcony. A barely perceptible shadow passes over it, alongside a glitter of pure magic that is oh so familiar. Mel's heart beats faster, but she doesn’t say a word. 

Today, the villagers have somehow managed to top their devotion. The banners fly high, gold beads are strewn in the air, glittering under the sunlight as Mel graces them with her presence. She waves to as many people as she can, reaching down to shake the hands of the little children who have gathered to witness this monumental day. 

Ambessa walks behind Mel, hands clasped behind her back as she nods to her subjects. Kino and Mel’s father, King Azizi, brings up the rear, waving with elegance as the family proceeds to the throne. A servant awaits with the legendary Medarda Sword, meant to bless the new leader. Mel’s crown—specifically commissioned for her when she came of age almost 3 years ago—sits on a cushion beside it. Guards encircle the royals, all looking on with their own brand of pride. 

But none of them are ready for the burst of magic at the front gates.

You stomp inside, wearing a dress as dark as night, accented with amethyst that matches your magic-tinted eyes. You glare at the happy display and, with a single twist of your hand, send the guards flying with your magic. They cry out in fear and surprise, sliding across the floor far enough away not to be of use. 

“Hello, princess.” You spit as you sashay across the floor, towards the beacon of this cursed kingdom. “Sorry, I’m late.” 

She whispers your name and steps forward. “What are you doing here?!” 

“Am I not permitted to witness this grandiose occasion? I’m a citizen of this kingdom as well, you know, despite your attempts to drive me out. I want to see the new queen be crowned. Carry on.” You say with a mischievous grin, fluttering your hand again and sending the beloved relic of a sword into a nearby pillar. Inches away from Queen Ambessa's head.

The queen snarls and slips a weapon out of her gown. She is a formidable warrior, immune to your magic—as you’ve become painfully aware through the years. But she is not immune to her daughter’s magic.

In the blink of an eye, Mel handles the room for you. There’s a flash of gold light, and the room ceases to move. Everyone, her family included, is frozen in their place. But only for a few moments. 

“Nice trick, princess. I taught you that the first week I trained you, didn’t I? When you were still learning to control all that power of yours.” You reminisce, moving forward to stand in front of her.

Mel shivers under the intensity of your gaze, dropping her formerly lifted hand. It twitches as she holds back just barely from reaching for you. 

“You cannot be here. I…as much as I want you here, you’ve made your choice. I have a responsibility to my kingdom.” Mel whispers, her voice weak. 

“You have a responsibility to me!” You spit, half hurt, half enraged. Tears bud in both your eyes. “You made me love you. Stole my heart right from under me…I cannot stand being away from you, Mel.” You confess in a whisper, reaching for her gently, to prove you’re not out to hurt her. 

Your hand comes to rest at her slip waist, pulling her closer. When your hips are flush together—as much as they can be with the heft of your gowns—Mel gasps. 

“Please...I have to do this. I have to fulfill my purpose.” She tries.

“You have no duty to this kingdom. The only duty you have is to yourself, Mel. You’re not some prize to be won. No paragon of goodness. You’re a woman. A flesh and blood human being, with needs.” You remind her, reaching up her bodice—and enjoying the way she shivers—to caress her heaving cleavage briefly before detouring up to her pretty face.

She melts into your touch. 

The kiss comes naturally, heated and hungry as you get a taste of this precious princess you love so much.

When she came to you—an infamous fugitive mage of her kingdom, hellbent on destruction and chaos magic according to her parents— months ago in the height of her uncontrolled power, you fell instantly. And by the way she clings to you, she’s fallen just as hard.

Your magical signature remains in the room throughout the entire coronation— the perfume of lilac and blackberries—, and it haunts Mel as she leans down to accept her crown.

Her mother's eyes watch keenly, aware of the deceit but unsure just what transpired. But Mel cannot care less today. For she is Queen. She'd never questioned her future until you burst into the coronation room.

As beloved as Mel is by her loyal subjects…the one she wants the most can no longer be hers.

I think we forget that, before season 1 episode 8 “Oil and Water,” we didn’t have a reference for the Medarda standards that Mel supposedly failed—this is why Ambessa’s first appearance is so striking. While Mel has completely scrubbed red from her wardrobe, red is the first thing that jumps out with the cape and the accents—a bold color that is associated with passion and violence and decisiveness, all traits that Ambessa proudly boasts

The grey and black then point to functionality and metals like iron, which are used more for warfare, in contrast to gold, which is a softer metal

The immediate next observation is the functionality of the outfit—the shoulder and hip guards, the belt and abdomen armor, the pants, the boots. While in good condition, the immediate conclusion that we get is that, like Sevika and Vi, this is a character who likes a free range of movement to dish out violence, and the casual way with which she wears this outfit shows how at ease she is with this violence, how she values her physical strength

(hilariously, in the art book screenshot below, the top right draft for Ambessa’s outfit shows her in a symmetrical white waistcoat with gold and black accents like Mel’s Piltover outfit, which I’m glad that they didn’t use in the end, but I think Ambessa would’ve worn it at least once to freak Mel out)

Her hair is free and wild, almost careless, again in contrast to Mel’s carefully groomed braids (keep this in mind for later)—where Mel lets her put together appearance speak of her character, Ambessa’s not carelessness, but her confidence

The picture with Mel and Ambessa in front of the former’s painting is also interesting, because we can see how the red from the sails matches Ambessa’s red—unity with nation, as for the purposes of the story, Ambessa is Noxus, but then we see that the ambient coloring of the painting is gold—Mel’s color. The painting—Mel’s vision—is the closest we see mother and daughter aligned, with Ambessa just having invited Mel to come back, and the beautiful and almost dream-like scene behind them unites them briefly

Of course, this is Arcane so that never happens, which brings us to one of my favorite images of Ambessa:

Firstly, this is just mwah so sexy there’s the ambient red of the scene from the ashes and fire, adding to the association of red as violence, but more significantly:

It’s the first time she wears gold—and it’s in a war mask, already smeared with blood and green chems

So this outfit just—props to the design department. Just. Gorgeous. Beautiful. Outstanding. 100/10 villain outfit

So there’s a lot going down here, so I’ll start with real world inspirations: from this post by @hyperfixationcritter (it has so much more info, i would def recommend the whole thing!), we can see that the headdress could be inspired by Zulu isicholos and the red threading is similar to the Dahomey warriors, which I love, as they could’ve just gone with the Roman and/or medieval aesthetic natural to Noxus, but instead they went with African influences, so when we see the pinnacle of Medarda splendor, it’s distinct and unique

Also here’s some art book insights (my eternal thanks to @stealingpotatoes for the photo!)

So from the regal outfit drafts, we can see them cycling out different ideas of war-like aesthetic, from the more modern military aesthetic with the side cloak and clean lines which would be more like a cleaned up version of Ambessa’s first outfit, to the symmetrical wing-like gold breastplate that, interestingly, mimicks Mel’s back tattoo. I still like the version that they settled on the most, but I love how we can see what aspects they wanted to evoke through the process

The blood mask is definitely more Viking-like in aesthetic, but I feel this is something a younger Blood Sweat & Tears Ambessa would do

And going to the actual mask, it’s interesting to note that it looks more Noxian gray and iron than the final color, which brings me to my favorite point:

Firstly, I love how you can see the similarities in features in mother and daughter, but more than that, what jumps out?

Gold—Ambessa’s decadent earrings and lip ring, the breastplate, the accents on the outfit, except in contrast to Mel, Ambessa’s gold speaks of war—the earrings are triangular and pointed, the breastplate is a functional piece of armor

Narratively speaking, when Mel disappears, Ambessa is not only politically but also visually primed to take her place as the power in Piltover

Also I want to share insights from this post by the fabulous @melmedarda

And it leaves you to wonder, is it a Medarda custom to braid their hair when at war? To wear gold to war where all of Noxus wears red and black and silver?

Mel choses her battleground to be politics and subtlety and diplomacy. Ambessa choses the wolf and the blade

Furthermore, the coloring is primarily white, black and gold—Mel’s colors—showing how even if she did return, these signifiers of the identity she built for herself have been overtaken and their meaning inverted—in a way, her mother has stolen that from her, and that’s so twisted and incredibly interesting at the same time (also interesting to note that Mel seems to be primed to be Caitlyn’s support after Cassandra Kiramman’s death, but then Ambessa takes up that role, and then it returns to Mel during the final battle)

After this change, we really only see Ambessa in her workout martial arts outfit with Caitlyn, otherwise it’s variations on accessories on a basic theme, much like Mel’s season 1 outfit really only changes with the ratios of black and white, and while yes, I’ve said before that it would be cool to see some variation, story-wise giving a character a recognizable outfit works towards creating them as a recognizable and steady figure—Mel as the stable reference for wealth, Ambessa as the glory of war

I love this photo so much—firstly, the only change is the hair, which has been reworked from it’s complicated headdress into functional twin braids, and there’s a beautiful balance between the blade and the Medarda ring on her hand. This is probably the most gold we see her wearing, at the height of her military power, before the power of a butch with beautiful eyes compels Caitlyn to betray her

Here we can clearly see that the regal outfit is very easily turned into a functional outfit—even at her most decadent, it takes two seconds to lose the coat and have free range to wield weapons

Returning to the mask, in the final battle, we can see its iconic claw marks from Warwick—wear and tear from the war that we saw happen onscreen from a clash of two Wolf-coded figures (I have thoughts about the wolf metaphor in relation to social dynamics and the lone wolf idea as portrayed by Vander and Ambessa, but that’s a whole other discussion)

Design-wise, it’s also very smart to have the anti-magic runes be green—it makes them easy to spot against Ambessa’s usual design

But of course they can’t save her, and Ambessa dies, and in the final shot, she looks like this:

The lack of focus on gold or armor makes us focus on her face, and for a moment, there is such softness and tenderness there as she gazes at Mel. Because yes, she was the armor and the blade and the iron and gold, but in the end, she was just a mother who loved her daughter. She was a horrible parent and a violent warlord, but the love was there, and at the end of her life this is what we focus on, because everything else were just the expressions of the power she sought to protect them.
