Day 206: Wendy Darling (Peter Pan)

My life this summer has also been really similar to Waitress.

I work in a small-town non-chain restaurant. I don’t make pies, but I make pizzas, which is a kind of pie in a way. I work with a gruff old man whose dream is to write a book, a woman who has told me that her husband beats her but she has to stay with him to keep her kids, and a whole bunch of other people with interesting stories of their own.

So I met this guy a few weeks ago. And if you know me, you know that Beauty and the Beast is one of my favorite stories and has had a big impact on my life. My relationship so far with this guy has so many eerie similarities to that story that it’s kind of freaking me out.

So this guy, first of all, doesn’t go by his real first name. Just like the Beast isn’t usually called by his real name. 

When this guy was 12, he was paralyzed. He had an extremely rare disease - transverse myelitis. You have a better chance of winning the lottery than of getting this disease, and it’s totally random. He had to be airlifted to the hospital because it was life-threatening and he was in the hospital for 3 months. He was lucky to get most of his mobility back. One day he could move his toe, and then he graduated to crutches, a walker, and leg braces before being able to walk on his own. The kids in his school bullied him for “walking funny,” and he’s still very skinny and walks a little differently as a result. He can’t walk for long distances before it hurts him. In addition to that, when he was younger a doctor’s mistake made him lose most of the hearing in his left ear. He also never got braces because his canines are still baby teeth and in order to get braces, a dentist would have to cut those out. He’s going to get braces after he graduates college, but for the time being he’s really insecure about his smile. 

He thinks he’s ugly. He’s said exactly that to me many times. He’s not convinced that I truly like him because he says he wouldn’t date a girl who was like him because he would judge her for it. Just like the Beast judges appearances. 

The Beast was cursed when he was 11, which is almost exactly the age when this guy was paralyzed. And now I’m meeting him when he’s 23, which is just two years older than the Beast was when his curse was broken. 

This guy also has quite a temper and is very stubborn and easily jealous. But he’s also very sweet once you get to know him. And I love to read and he doesn’t. 

There are just a lot of little similarities and it’s a bit strange.

There’s a cover of this song by Fall Out Boy & Missy Elliot on YouTube which is getting a ton of hate just like the trailers, because it’s a rock/rap remix and haters think it’s the main theme for the new Ghostbusters movie. While it is used in the movie to great effect (when shit hits the fan), THIS new cover by WALK THE MOON is the official updated version of the theme song and is used in the movie in all other situations.

All of these closing notices have put the final nail in the Hamilton coffin for me. I’m officially over it. And I don’t care what people say, Hamilton is totally at least part of the reason half of Broadway are closing in the next few months.
