By the time the next day rolled around, you had slept in a bit later than you usually would've. Which was only natural given how yesterday's moving activities went. After rubbing the sleep gunk from your eyes, you crawled out of bed and went about your morning routine to get prepared for the day ahead. After getting ready for the day ahead, you went to the kitchen to make a simple, easy, and quick to make breakfast that would still give you the energy for today to continue the packing and moving process. Because, sure, there wasn't nearly as much to do compared to yesterday, it was still gonna eat up most of your day. Even then, the full unpacking process would have to be squeezed in here and there whenever you got the opportunity.
So, once breakfast was had and everything was washed up, you got to work once more on finishing packing up what was left from yesterday. Once you got into the groove of it? There was no stopping ya till everything was packed up. Or until your stomach decided to let you know it was hungry and wouldn't wait anymore. Whichever came first.
Surprisingly enough, and definitely thankfully too, you had managed to get all your odds and ends packed up and moved to your new quarters, done with an hour and a half to spare before it was noon. With a heavy sigh, you wipe the sweat from your brow and think about what to do for lunch. Really, the only thing you had to do now was move these boxes to your new quarters and start unpacking, at least the necessities first.
That's when the idea struck you. You could get a special lunch for not only what would be your former Captain and Lieutenant as of tomorrow, but also one for your new Captain and Lieutenant. With that in mind, you set off with a very specific destination in mind - a restaurant you had been to several times before, even with those you had planned to surprise with a lunch, so you had a fairly good idea what they would like. The best part is? It was good food, and you knew the best shortcut to get there, made even shorter by the use of Shunpo.
It was roughly a 15 to 20-minute time frame to get to the restaurant. However, you did manage to beat the lunch rush. That alone was a bonus. With a kind smile, you went up to the register and placed your to-go order, making sure to get something for both captains, lieutenants, and yourself. By the time everything was done, it hadn't even been the full 20 minutes like it was thought; always a personal win when that happens, everyone's happy. With a final polite smile and a 'thank you', you returned from the way you came to make your surprise lunch deliveries.
Knowing Nanao's routine so well from all the time you had spent working in Squad 8, you knew she would appreciate her food sooner rather than later. Even though she didn't know you had decided to get everyone lunch. You couldn't be happier right now at the fact that Shunpo was something you could use, as it had saved you so much time. You paused a few feet away from the office door, double-checking that the orders for Nanao and Shunsui were in the same bag just to make life a little more convenient for everyone. Once satisfied, you went up to the office door and knocked, announcing yourself like you had so many times in the past before entering with a warm smile. "I hope you two are hungry. I brought lunch."
Nanao was the first to look up from the papers she was working on at her desk, a gentle yet warm smile crossing her features as she saw you, while Shunsui tilted his hat up just in time to see you walking in from where he lay on the floor. "Ah (Y//N), that's quite thoughtful of you. You didn't have to go out of your way when you're already so busy." Nanao responded, clearly grateful for the way you always thought of others, but also had an older sister's feeling of concern of wanting to make sure you took proper care of yourself when you still had quite a bit on your plate to deal with.
Shunsui, on the other hand? Mam acted like the most grateful older brother in the world who wasn't used to such things. Thing was.. You always tried to bring them lunch or a snack at least once a week because that's just who you were, just like it was Shunsui's nature to be some level of dramatic each time you did. "Oh, how very sweet of you, dearest (Y/N)! Whatever shall we do with such a sweetheart as yourself!" He commented as if reciting poetry as he moved to sit in an upright position with one hand covering his heart and the other tilting his hat back into place while leaving the pink, flowery yukata on the ground under him.
You couldn't stop the light and warm chuckle that fell from your lips at Shunsui's classic dramatics. Even over something like this, he knew how to keep the atmosphere light and playful while still being genuine in his appreciation. "You're both very welcome. I thought this would be a good way of expressing my thanks. I also got some for Captain Hitsugaya and Lieutenant Matsumoto. Oh, but don't think I won't keep randomly bringing food by for you both. That'll never change." You explained while setting the bag down and passing them each their meal, and making sure to hand them their respective utensils and some napkins.
"Well, well. Already trying to win over your new squad mates, hm?" Shunsui teased with a playful glint in his eye while Nanao simply waved her hand in dismal of her Captain's teasing remark. "We shouldn't keep you then. Go ahead and stop by Squaf 10's office. Wouldn't want to deliver cold food after all. You always know where to find us, and thank you again, (Y/N), for the meal, it's very appreciated."
"You're welcome once again. I promise to check in later and keep you up to date on how everything is going! Enjoy and I'll see ya later!" You waved with a smile that couldn't quite cover the mix of emotions you still felt over all this. And they understood perfectly because no matter the results of this, it was going to have quite the impact on all parties but you, especially. However, this was also an important journey not just for you. The two returned your smile with a warm yet understanding one of their own and a wave. "Don't forget, (Y/N), no matter where the road takes you, you'll always have a home here. Chin up, my dear, don't let yourself get stuck in those what-ifs, and be in the now. With that said, you'd best run off and deliver the others their meals. I can think of another captain who would quite love a lunch delivery from a certain Third Seat."
"R-right! Thank you.. Again. Alright, really this time, I'll see you guys later!" With that, you offered one last wave before exiting, making sure to close the door behind you before hurrying off towards Squad 10's office.
After some more time running and using Shunpo, you had to come to a quick halt when you were a few feet away and right around the corner from the office to avoid colliding with Rangiku. You could've sworn you heard the faint yelling of her name as she quickly fled from where you assumed she came from, the same place you were going. "O-Oh! Li-lieutenant Matsumoto! Uh.. Perfect timing, actually.. I came to bring you and Captain Hitsugaya lunch."
In the next moment, you were practically clobbered by Rangiku's bear hug, though you did manage not to drop anything thanks to your quick reflexes, while returning her hug a few moments later as she practically squealed in excitement. "Ohhh! Thank you, thank you, thank you! You are just the sweetest, you know that (Y/N)?" Sometimes you wondered how many times you could go through the same song and dance between Shunsui and Rangiku alone.
"It's no problem. I wanted to show my thanks and figured this would be a good way." You explained with a bit of a sheepish chuckle at her reaction. "Though it would be nice if you could return to the office with me and do some of that paperwork you always neglect."
Rangiku pulled back just a bit from the hug to look down at you with a pout. "But (Y/N)! It's so boring! I can't understand how the Captain does it all the time." With a huff of fond exasperation, you shook your head at her complaints and responded simply. "Because it's a part of the job. Though you not doing yours doesn't help him in that regard any, either. C'mon.. At least a few hours of paperwork since I brought food for you two?"
Ot was reluctant and took a minute before finally giving in. As much as she hated paperwork, you were kind enough to surprise both of them with lunch, and she wouldn't let kindness like that go without doing something in return. Even if that something was paperwork. With a spin on her heel, she linked her arm around yours with her signature smile and practically dragged you along to the office with her. "How can I say no when you went out of your way to bring us lunch while taking care of your own matters?"
After a moment of stumbling from the sudden pull, you walked beside her with a bright smile that had an underlying sense of pride to it cause you knew that she meant it this time. She was actually going to do at least some of her assigned paperwork without forcing it onto Toshiro. "Thank you, Rangiku. I'm proud of ya for doing some of the paperwork, even if you hate it." She glanced down at you in brief surprise before quickly covering it up with a grateful smile and a whisper meant only for you. "Thanks.." One of the few times it wasn't teasing or a sarcastic remark about her doing what most considered the boring part of most duties. No. Instead, it was real. It was genuine pride and acknowledgement that she is capable of doing it, even if it meant forcing herself to do it because of one person who is naturally so sweet and kind that if she hadn't agreed, it would've weighed on her mind.
As soon as you both had gotten to the door, with you not quite in view yet, besides Rangiku, who had opened the door with a huge grin, causing Toshiro to reflexively look up from his work at the sound, he had begun to lecture Rangiku about her responsibilities once he saw her. Though much to his initial annoyance, she had once again cut him off by stepping inside and pulling you in after her. Only for her to move you right in front of her like a proud mother as she placed her hands on your shoulders. "Awww! But I came back and look, Captain! (Y/N) was so thoughtful and brought us lunch!"
Cue the shy smile and wave from you as soon as you were thrown into the middle of this whole mess. "I um.. fi-fi-finished packing and noticed it was about lunch time s-s-s-so I thought I would pick up some for you both as well. To show my thanks. I even ma-man-managed to convince the lieutenant here to do some of-of her work too."
Toshiro's eyes widened at this, especially at the fact that you convinced Rangiku to get some work done. Nor did he expect to see you here so soon and with lunch to top it all off. Then, on top of it all, Rangiku was easily bribed with food to get her work done. It almost didn't feel real. "Ah, well, that's quite kind of you. Thank you for the meal, (Y/N), as well as getting my slacking lieutenant to work."
As you started pulling out Toshiro's order, you shook your head in response. While walking over to his desk to give him his food, you replied in a reassuring yet slightly playful way. "Ah, don't worry about it, it's no problem! Someone outta help you one way or another anyways." Once, close enough, you handed Toshiro his meal, who accepted it with a simple nod and a ghost of a smile. Rangiku immediately grabbed you by the arm and dragged you over to the couch to sit together for lunch. In return, you simply shook your head with a fond smile and passed her the meal you got for her before finally getting to your own.
While the three of you ate with a bit of chatting here and there, mainly from Rangiku, an idea struck you that might just help ease Toshiro's workload burden. "You know, Rangiku, if you promise to help out with the paperwork more, I'll bring you homemade lunch or snacks in return." Now that got her attention, causing her to perk up rather quickly, excitement and hope filling her gaze at the prospect. She, like many others, loved your food, especially your baking. "Really??! Are you sure?" She asked quickly, the excited hope clear as day in her tone.
"Well, yeah. I wouldn't have mentioned it if I wasn't, after all. I often did it for Nanao and Shunsui whenever they needed, so I don't mind doing it for either of you. Especially if it means there's a chance of getting you to help out more often in the office, Rangiku." Now here was her dilemma. She loved your food but hated the paperwork. But even working half the day in return for something homemade... Maybe, just maybe, that would be acceptable enough. After a minute or two of thinking, she finally spoke up again with a big ol' smile as she practically tackled you in another hug, somehow though, you managed to keep from dropping your food at the sudden force that is Rangiku. "I'd owe you my life if you did that, honestly."
"You definitely wouldn't, just help out more with paperwork, and we'll call it even." You responded once you recovered, wrapping your free arm around her in return with a pat on the back. A silent promise that you meant everything you said. She pouted but soon gave in. It was simply too good an offer to turn down, after all. "Alright, alright. You win, (Y/N)." Meanwhile, Toshiro was so busy multitasking, eating while working, that he pretty much missed what that whole conversation was about. He heard the two of you chatting, but didn't absorb anything from it. All in all, lunch with the Captain and Lieutenant of Squad 10 went pretty damn well.
After lunch was finished, you gathered the trash for everyone and threw it away. As promised, Rangiku went to her desk, grabbed a pen, and began working on the papers she had abandoned there earlier. Miraculously, without a single complaint. You had grabbed a stack that was sitting on the floor by Toshiro's desk, borrowed a pen from Rangiku, and moved back to the couch once more. This time, you opted to sit on the floor in front of it, working at the coffee table. Things had gone by smoothly for a few hours, everyone so focused on working that not a single peep was made.
Finally, Toshiro had looked up for a quick stretch and to make himself a cup of tea. What he hadn't been expecting when he walked around his desk, arms stretched above his head, and soon falling back to his side, only a few moments later was you sitting on the floor in front of the couch, working on your third stack of papers, and least of all, Rangiku sitting at her desk, silently nonetheless, working on papers as well. What had he missed during lunch?
Rangiku, naturally, was the first to notice this from having glanced up when noticing the movement from the corner of her eye. Didn't take much before she started teasing the surprised and bewildered Captain, whose mouth had fallen partially agape. "Careful there, Captain, keep that up and you'll catch flies." You glanced up due to her comment, following her gaze to said Captain, a quiet giggle escaping you as you turned your gaze back to the work in front of you with a pleased little smile. You did damn good. Between the teasing and your giggle, it wasn't more than a second before Toshiro hastily closed his mouth with a hint of pink dusting his cheeks as he glanced away with a little huff.
"I did say I'd help out yesterday. And I made a deal with Rangiku so she would at least do a bit of paperwork as well." You responded, glancing back up once you finished filling in a part of the paper you were currently halfway through. He simply nodded in response and continued on his way towards the kitchenette to make his tea, but he was damn proud of you for managing to get his lieutenant to do some paperwork. As he did, you looked over at the nearby clock on the wall and gasped in surprise, not expecting time to have gone that fast.
Rangiku's focus quickly shifted to you at the noise, raising an eyebrow in curiosity. "Uh.. Everything alright, (Y/N)?" With a few quick glances between the clock, the half-finished paper, and Rangiku in slight panic, you replied. "I nearly forgot I promised I would help Nanao with some stuff in the office before I officially started here tomorrow! I'll finish this page, then go over and help, but I promise to come back and finish the rest of this stack." You weren't even done speaking when your gaze shifted to the paper in front of you, quickly writing where necessary but still making sure it was legible.
As you were speaking, Toshiro walked back into the main office area with a mug in hand and that same calm expression. "Hm? Nonsense. You've done enough today already, on your day off, even. Don't think you expect me to believe you're completely done packing either. Don't worry too much about it for today, you can finish it when you come in tomorrow." You finished only moments later, moving the finished paper into your finished stack of papers. "Thank you, Captain, but I c-can't just start a sta-stack of papers and not try to finish it within a reasonable time frame." You responded quickly, already standing up and hurrying over to Rangiku's desk to return the borrowed pen. "I'll come back once I've finished helping in Squad 8! I gotta get going though, see you guys later!"
The two had just enough time to wave goodbye before you were out the door and hurrying along the streets of the Seireitei. After the door finally closed after you, Rangiku leaned back in her chair, arms crossing as that all too familiar teasing smirk crossed her features. "Someone's being awfully sweet." Toshiro didn't miss her implications, heat quickly rising to his cheeks. Just as quickly as the blush started, he turned his head away in a poor attempt to hide it so she didn't notice. She, of course, did. Then again, the way his voice cracked a bit didn't help his case either.
"I don't know what you could possibly be implying with that! She's a hard worker, even on her days off, and was even nice enough to bring us a meal. It's only right that I don't make her come back afterwards. Her official start day isn't even till tomorrow! Yet she still insisted on helping today… It's only right to have her finish later." While admittedly, yes, that was all true, it wasn't the full reason either. Rangiku knew it too. So, when her answer was a sarcastic hum of agreement followed by, "Whatever you say, Captain." He knew that this was only the start.
Meanwhile, as soon as you got back to the Squad 8 office, you didn't hesitate to lend a hand where it was needed. Shunsui? He helped. Sometimes. The rest of the time? He was acting like an older brother who had the best information to tease the living hell out of a younger sibling. Thanks to that, more often than not, you ended up a flustered, stuttering mess, which did nothing in the way of being any kind of useful help. You either found a way to hide from it or asked Nanao for backup. To say she was willing to help you outta that situation might've been an understatement. You were extremely grateful to both of them, but at the same time, goddamn Shunsui.
It's not like this was a hard task, but thanks to Shunsui's shenanigans and some technical difficulties, it took much longer than expected. You practically had to force Nanao and Shunsui to go home, especially Nanao, so they could get some decent rest. There wasn't much left to do, and it was easier if left to one person anyway. Besides, this is how you wanted to make up for the earlier struggles you were having, thanks to the teasing. They finally accepted because you promised that once you were done here, you wouldn't try to do anything else, because some things that were left required multiple people.
By the time you had finished and left the Squad 8 office, the sun had already set. Though it wasn't anything terribly late. Maybe, roughly around 10 o'clock or so. That's what you thought; it was actually closer to 11 o'clock. Using Shunpo, you headed towards the Squad 10 office to finish that small stack of paperwork you left earlier. Otherwise, it was just gonna weigh on your mind. You figured everyone had already returned to their quarters for the night anyway, so it's not like you were disturbing anyone. Rangiku most definitely already left. When you got there, you couldn't find Toshiro anywhere. It was a fairly safe assumption based on the evidence.
Once more, you borrowed a pen from Rangiku's desk before returning to where you were sitting on the floor between the couch and coffee table hours prior, the unfinished stack still there. Thanks to a previous incident with a very drunk Rangiku, the desk that was typically for the Third seat was currently away being repaired. At the very least, it should be finished in a few days. Though it's not like you minded sitting on the floor either. Once comfortable and ready, you began filling in the paperwork once more.
Within getting a few sheets off the top done, you heard the door open right as you started on another. A sudden nervousness filled you, having a pretty damn good idea of who it was. Slowly, you looked up to the door where you spotted the familiar figure leaning against the door with his arms crossed. Toshiro. Because of course it was. He raised a knowing eyebrow as he watched you, asking the question despite knowing the answer, giving you a chance to own up. "What do you think you're doing?"
You glanced at the paper in front of you, hand hovering to the side of it so you could read and see where to fill in for the next part, then back to him a few beats later. "Uh... P-P-Paperwork..." Your voice was quieter than usual, nerves taking over because, while no, you wouldn't be in serious trouble, you weren't expecting him to come back while you were here to finish either. "I see that. Didn't I say you could save that for tomorrow?"
Damn it, he had you there, but even still. You nodded, shifting your focus to your lap instead. "Yes, but… I couldn't leave it in good conscience when I was the one who started it and stopped because I forgot about another task…"
"And do you realize the time, Third Seat (Y/N)?" You cringed slightly at the formality, expecting a lecture on taking better care of yourself or listening when he said you could leave something to be finished at a later date. Not that you were entirely sure why you would, that's just what your brain decided to immediately jump to. Maybe because you were worried about upsetting or disappointing Toshiro beyond a professional way. "A-A little aft-after 10?" That earned a sigh, shaking his head as he pushed off the frame and stepped further into the office.
"A little after 11. Go get some rest, tomorrow is your official day here after all, you'll want it. Besides, I don't need you overworking yourself over something so small." You knew he was right, but you couldn't help the small pout that graced your features. It was a bit hypocritical, after all. He knew it too, but he was always one to brush it off because he was the Captain. "Don't you overwork yourself quite a bit, Captain? It's not a very large stack, I promise to go once I've finished it."
Toshiro closed the door with a sigh, walking over to you and taking half the already small stack you were working through. "Fine. But I'm working on half of it as well. Seems fair enough to me." He retorted, sitting down at his desk and beginning to work. It was subtle, but it's how he showed he cared. You blinked a few times in surprise as he took half and began working. It wasn't long before you recovered and resumed working as well with a gentle smile.
"Why did you come back so late, anyway?" You asked curiously as you worked, earning a quick glance with a raised eyebrow. "Because I knew that, despite what I said earlier, you were going to come back, so I decided to periodically peek in. Seems like I'll have to be clearer with orders like that in the future, hm?" At that, a breathless, sheepish chuckle fell from your lips as you rubbed the back of your neck in an unconscious manner. "Sorry, Captain. I'll try not to do it again."
"Geez, you're such a handful, you know that?" Despite the dry tone, you knew he meant nothing harsh by it. Simply a light-hearted jab. "Just don't overdo it." He followed up after a brief pause. You chuckled in response, just loud enough for him to hear, followed by your own light-hearted jab. "Oh yeah, 'cause you're so much better about it." That stunned him for a few moments there. When he recovered, he jokingly rolled his eyes, muttering. "Yeah, yeah. Finish up so you can go to bed." With a soft laugh from you, the two of you returned to work.
It was another 15 minutes before the two of you had finished, which was roughly at the same time. You set the pen down and immediately clasped your hands above your head, twisting, turning, and leaning in different ways to stretch out your back. It did pop in a few places, which was a win alone, relieving some soreness. You stood up, grabbing the papers and pen, making sure to return the pen right where you found it and give the finished paperwork to Toshiro. "Here ya are. Now, time for you to get some rest, Mr. Workaholic.
He accepted the stack, adding it to the pile of finished ones on his desk with a playful eye roll at your teasing. You were the exception when it came to teasing. He stood to join you, gesturing for you to go first. He has his gentlemanly moments, too. "You don't seem to be much better in that way, (Y/N), I don't want to hear it from you. Here, I'll walk you home tonight as well." In that moment, you swore your heart squeezed while your stomach did somersaults. Despite being caught continuing to do work even though you probably should've just left it and, in a way, getting a light, almost teasing scolding from it, he still wanted to do something as sweet as walk you back to your quarters?
With a smile that struck Toshiro right through the heart and a nod, you lead the way out of the office, walking side by side together once outside. "Thank you, I really appreciate it." As you walked, a comfortable silence settled over you both. You looked up, admiring the night sky and how it always seemed so beautiful, even if you didn't have the utmost perfect view. Toshiro, on the other hand, was too focused on you, wondering to himself how it seemed like no matter what was happening, you always looked amazing. Hell, even if it was something as simple as paperwork. Anything you or others may see as imperfect? He saw that as another piece of what made you, you. And he wouldn't want to change a single bit. Not that he'd ever say that. He couldn't bring himself to for so many reasons.
Before you knew it, you had arrived at what was now your new home. You sighed deeply as you came to a stop. Everything felt so surreal, not in a bad way, per say, but it was overwhelming and left you with such a vast amount of emotions. Toshiro saw the look in your eyes, recognizing it from having been there multiple times himself, reached up and patted your back in reassurance. "Just give yourself time to adjust. It's going to be alright, I promise."
Even if it was just a little bit, that one gesture was all it took for you to start relaxing. To get out of your head. Even though you typically tried to avoid giving him hugs in more public areas out of respect and understanding for his preferences but right now was an exception. One he would always willingly make an exception for. You stepped closer to him, arms wrapping around him in a much needed embrace. He didn't hesitate to return it, not whe it was clear that you needed so badly. He'd be damned if he'd turn you down when you needed comfort.
It's been years now since you first started giving him hugs but he was convinced that he'd never fully get used to it - the warmth, the comfort, the way his heart skipped a beat and beat just abit faster. Though it was more convenient for him to tell himself it was just cause he wasn't used to physical affection like this. You stayed like that, enjoying the warmth and comfort you provided for the other before pulling away after a bit.
With a small, grateful smile, you stepped back and in a voice befitting the gentleness of the quiet night, "Goodnight, Captain Histugaya, rest well. Thank you for today." Toshiro could've sworn his heart gave out from the sound of your voice and that smile alone. His expresssion softend into a ghost of a smile with the slightest tilt of his head. "You're quite welcome, (Y/N). Goodnight and rest well too, you've more than earned it."
That's where the two of you parted for the night, going through your own nightly routines before climbing into bed for the night. It was a long day for both of you so it didn't take much to fall asleep once your heard hit the pillow. Not that it stopped either of your hearts from pounding though. This was the start of a new adventure.
An adventure that carried on for a few months after that night. You still brought lunches/snacks to both Captains and Lieutenants of Squads 8 and 10. Rangiku even kept her word on doing more paperwork in exchange fo it, even if she only worked half the day, it was a vast improvement; especially because even though you didn't bring food every day, she still worked most if not every day. Even if it just meant working in the morning till lunch. Toshiro was always extremely grateful for the meal. He couldn't skip meals this way. Through this time, the two of you grew closer, bit by bit, one day at a time. Naturally, Rangiku and Shunsui teased the two of you quite a bit, whether you were in the same space or not.
I am happy to announce that I've been working on chapter 3 to Captain Of My Heart over the last few hours. Still got more to write for it but I've made good progress! I have meant to get started working on this chapter and getting it out earlier but there's been a lot going on, this year as a whole. I'm going to do my absolute best to get it done and up by Wednesday. Fingers crossed that actually happens!! But I'm very excited to share this chapter and the happenings of a very sweet MC reader and a certain white haired tsundere captain.
I ain't finding nothing for Rune factory guardians of azuma x reader fanfics yet. I know it came out this year but I'm already wanting to read silly little stories about my favs. So if I get farther in the story (I just unlocked the quest to get the last god/ess) and there's still nothing, imma seriously contemplate working on some one shots for RFGOA
You hadn't been back to the office for more than five minutes. At max. You had just gotten yourself organized to resume the typical paperwork, helping Nanao pick up on your Captain's slack. Speaking of your Captain, there he was now, seemingly appearing out of nowhere beside your desk. His usual laid-back smile adorning his face, but there was something else to it, an underlying mischief that blended well with the pride there, too. Yet there was something more that you couldn't quite identify that he hid away beneath it all.
"Ah, (Y/N)! Punctual as always. And just the person I wanted to see as well. I have quite the news for you, dearest (Y/N). I sent in the paperwork for you to transfer to Squad 10 as their Third Seat. It was approved, meaning come next Monday, you'll officially be a part of Squad 10."
To say you were surprised would've been an understatement. Sure, you had quite the respect for Toshiro and Rangiku both, finding friendship in them as well, so it's not like you would have had a bad time there. But at the same time, you had found a family with Nanao and Shunsui during your time here in Squad 8. It left you feeling torn, wanting to help both Squads. Especially when there was a higher-ranking officer in both who slacked on their paperwork.
Though before you could even open your mouth to say something, Shunsui placed a hand on your head and ruffled your hair affectionately, beating you to it. His voice was warm and sweet, filled with a gentle reassurance you'd grown to appreciate over the years. "I know, it feels sudden, and it's quite the change. But you shouldn't worry. Everything will be okay, (Y/N). Nanao and I will always be by your side. Plus, sometimes change is necessary for us to grow. And I believe that this is a necessary step in your journey. As well as a certain someone else's. You won't be alone through this either."
It wasn't immediate, but Shunsui's words did sink in, providing some level of reassurance and ease. With a deep breath, you nodded and finally let some of the tension seep from your body. He was right and always knew just the right thing to say to help ease some of the weight you tended to carry alone.
"Thank you, Captain Kyoraku. That... Th-that helps quite a bit. I suppose you're right.. But, w-w-who was this 'certain someone else' you mentioned?" You looked up from your seat to Shunsui as you spoke, tone shifting from grateful to curious.
A wide, teasing grin spread across Shunshui's features upon hearing your question and without missing a beat replied, "Well, Toshiro, of course. Who else would it be?" He ended with a chuckle, eyebrow raised in silent question as if daring you to try to say another's name.
It didn't take long before warmth spread to your cheeks as they grew pink, stuttering and sputtering over Shunsui's casually teasing response. You wanted nothing more than to try to deny it, to say someone else's name or, at the very least, act as though the thought of this transfer being important in Toshiro's journey, too, didn't affect you as much as it did. But you couldn't muster up anything, no matter how hard you tried. Instead, simply falling silent from flustered shyness. Times like these, Shunsui swore it was just too easy to tease you.
"Oh, and (Y/N)? You have Saturday and Sunday off to pack and get yourself organized to move to your new quarters. I know you're efficient and like to get things done asap, but remember to take breaks too, alright?"
A sheepish smile graced your features in response, lifting a hand and waving it in casual dismissal. "Don't worry, Captain. I'll be good and take breaks as necessary. Really."
In reality, you would take breaks, but only when you decided you were too tired or had to because your body required sustenance or a bathroom break. That's just how you were. Get things done quickly and efficiently so they are done with and out of the way, leaving ample time to relax.
It was already Thursday, which left the rest of today and Friday to work as normal in Squad 8. Then Saturday and Sunday to get packed and moved over to your new quarters in the Squad 10 barracks. Monday was your first day as Third-Seat for Squad 10, after all. Even if you didn't get everything unpacked over the weekend, you could still gradually get it done when you had the chance. Everything happened so fast that it was hard to fully absorb and let it sink in completely.
The rest of the day and Friday went by faster than expected. On one side, it was filled with reassurance and support from both Nanao and Shunsui. Actually, their kindness had hit so deeply at one point that it nearly had you tearing up. They truly were amazing. However, on the other side of things, you were also getting teased left and right about your little crush on the short Captain of Squad 10 by the duo. Mainly Shunsui, because, of course, it would be him. Though that crush wasn't so little, they didn't need to know that. After all, it would only make the teasing worse.
After a long morning of hauling boxes back and forth, you stopped for a lunch break. Nothing fancy or anything, just something quick and wouldn't be too filling. There was still more work to do after all. While you were at a food stall, Renji hurried over as he called out your name and waved. You turned at the sound of his voice and returned his wave with a friendly smile. Amidst all the current chaos, you forgot one of your best friends had the day off today.
Once Renji joined you in line, he spoke up curiously with a twinge of worry underneath it. "Hey, what's up? It's barely one o'clock, and you already look tired as hell. Feelin' okay?"
"Yeah, yeah. I'm alright, no need to worry. Actually.. I'm in the process of moving into the Squad 10 barracks." And that's how you got to catching Renji up on the news of how and why you were moving. To say he was surprised was an understatement, but then again, he also knew how Shunsui could be. But part of him couldn't deny that Shunsui had a bit of a point - maybe this would be good for you and Toshiro. And hey, at least you always had a home at Squad 8 if necessary.
"Well, if you need help moving, I've got the day off." He said with a casual shrug, pausing only to order his food along with you before continuing as you both stepped to the side to wait for your food to finish. "I could help ya out with it, I don't mind. Not like I got anything better to do anyway."
"I-.. Really? Yo-you absolutely sure you don't mind?" You questioned, raising a brow. You didn't want to bother him while on his day off over something like this, but at the same time, help would make things go a lot faster. "Yes, yes. I don't mind. I offered, didn't I?" He replied with a teasing smirk, crossing his arms over his chest. Which earned a reluctant yet slightly amused sigh from you. "Alright, you got me there. Some help would be nice, honestly. And very appreciated. Thanks, Renji."
Once you both got your food, you found a spot under the shade of a tree, sitting down and eating together as you talked about whatever came to mind. Especially when it came to the move. Just having a small break like this was enough to help ease some of the tension and nerves about this whole move and transfer.
After lunch, the two of you returned to your barracks in Squad 8, where Renji helped you get more packing done before the two of you started moving stuff from the old barracks to the new one. Especially any of the furniture that didn't automatically come with the barracks. You didn't have a lot of heavy furniture or anything; it was just that the larger ones were awkward.
With Renji's help, things actually moved far more quickly than if it had been just you doing it, especially when it came to the furniture. After this move, when things were all finished up and settled, you were absolutely going to buy Renji a meal as thanks for his help.
By the end of the day, a fair bit had gotten done, and Renji offered his assistance with the rest of it tomorrow, but you simply waved your hand dismissively while reassuring him that, since there wasn't much left, you could manage on your own. Most of it was just packing up the last of your clothes, some food, and kitchen supplies, and finally, some of your decorations that just needed to be wrapped up before getting shoved in a box. Since after every mission to the World of the Living, you would grab a little memento trinket. Nothing that ever came out of the squad's pay, you always used your own. It was just a little something since you don't go to the World of the Living terribly often. And, each trinket was a reminder of a successful mission.
Renji tried asking a few more times since he was a good friend, but every time, you told him that it was alright and that he didn't have to worry about it. Eventually, he gave in because, well, it was you. He knew how stubborn you could be and that continuing to try to offer would be pointless.
"Alright, since you won't budge, I'll leave ya be for the night so you can get some rest. And don't even try telling me you don't need it, you clearly do. So, make sure to get some rest soon, ya hear?" Renji's tone held feigned authority regarding the matter, but under it all, it was clear he just wanted the best for you.
You chuckled softly, shaking your head slightly as you playfully nudged him with your elbow. "Hey now, I'm perfectly capable of taking breaks and getting rest when needed, thank you very much! Don't worry, I'll get some rest soon. No more working tonight. Get some rest, too, got it? You need it just as much as I do."
"Uh-huh, sure. Whatever you say." He replied in playful sarcasm, nudging you in return with his own elbow before adding. "Dinner and crashing for the night is my plan. I'll see ya later then, (Y/N). Goodnight and sweet dreams. Oh-! and don't think I won't stop by to check on ya tomorrow."
"Sounds like a good plan, Renji. Yeah, see I'll see ya later. Thanks again for your help, I greatly appreciate it." You wrapped your arm around him in a side hug, patting his back a few times in silent appreciation. "Goodnight, sleep well."
Renji returned your hug with his own, rubbing your back in reassurance and silent comfort from the long day's work, as well as just the sudden change. As much of a pain in the ass as he could be, he was a damn good friend. "C'mon now, what else are friends for?"
After you both pulled away, you exchanged smiles and waves before heading off in different directions. As much as you wanted to just eat dinner and go to bed, your mind was still a jumble and just needed some time to yourself to just... Relax and unwind. Even for just ten minutes.
Since it was getting late and the sun was getting ready to go down, you decided it would be the perfect opportunity to go to your favorite spot and watch the sunset to relax before bed. Which is exactly what you did. It didn't take terribly long to walk up there and get comfortable while leaning back against a tree trunk.
It couldn't have been more than five minutes when you heard approaching footsteps. All too familiar footsteps. As you turned your head toward the approaching figure, a smile crossed your features without much thought while calling out. "Hey, Captain Hitsugaya!"
"Good evening (Y/N)." Toshiro nodded in response as he walked over, sitting down beside you but still at a respectful distance away. After all, he didn't want to invade your space. So instead, he always left the initiation of contact to you. Especially the hugs, which, even though he'd never admit it, he absolutely adored. There was just something about your hugs that made them special, different. The best. Anyone could testify to that.
The two of you simply sat in a comfortable silence together as you watched the sun descend behind the horizon. It was something you had both gotten used to doing together and secretly agreed that it was a wonderful time. No words needed to be said; it was a silent agreement. It didn't need to be any fancy or exciting, just quiet time together watching something beautiful like this was enough.
When the sun was almost gone, he turned to you with the softest, most gentle look he could manage while a tiny smile tugged at the corners of his lips. He damn near forgot what he was about to say simply from admiring the way the glow from the fading sun had cast across your features. Man, he was a goner for you. Not that he would admit it, especially to you, as he figured there was no way you could possibly return his feelings. Oh, how blind the two of you were.
In this moment, he could've sworn his heart was going to hammer right out of his chest. But Toshiro, being Toshiro, was pretty damn good at hiding it. Except that soft, fond, adoring look he had that was only for you. Or those itty-bitty smiles when he was around you. They weren't terribly common but... When it was just the two of you? They seemed to be a bit more frequent than what's normal for his smile count. The part that did happen more often? That soft look he reserved for only you. The person who wormed your way into his heart without trying, and before he even realized it.
As soon as he realized it, he quickly regained his composure. Or at least acted like he did. But he couldn't quite school that gentle look in his eyes when he looked at you. It was something he started doing this past year or so, before he even knew it. Though he couldn't bring himself to mind it all that much.
"I'm sure it took you quite a bit of thought." Toshiro started; his voice was quieter than usual, not quite a whisper, but it wasn't as 'cold' or 'harsh' as most would describe it. "I'm glad you chose to come to my squad. It's nice knowing I'll have quite the capable third seat with me."
You're cheeks didn't take long to start feeling warm, and you were sure they were some sort of pinkish color. Not only from his compliment of how he found you capable, and that he was glad to have you in his squad, but from his smile, too. It was such a little thing, something most would overlook. But each time he smiled, especially when it was directed at you... Well, you couldn't stop the way your heart would beat just a bit faster or how it would skip a beat. You were tempted to ask him for mercy with that smile. But that would just be a foolish request. At least currently.
That damn stutter made itself quickly known from how flustered and shy you had suddenly gotten from his words. Because of course it did, damn thing. "Tr-truthfully, I was k-k-k-kinda nervous an-and not sure what to-to-to do since Rangiku s-suggested it... But everyone I-I-I told was so su-su-su-supportive and encouraged me to do-do it that it felt like the right thing t-to do."
"Besides..." You paused just long enough to turn toward Toshiro with a closed-eyed smile that he was utterly certain could rival the warmth of the damn sun. "It w-w-would be my honor to be-be able to work u-u-u-under you, Captain Hitsugaya! I-I always did think you were q-q-quite admirable, so thank you for-for-for having faith in me and a-accepting the transfer."
With how fast his face and the tips of his ears got red so quickly, he turned his gaze back towards the sunset, so that way, instead of admitting that you got him to blush with your response, he could simply blame it on the glow from the sunset. Now his heart? That was starting to feel like it had simultaneously melted into a pile of goop, yet also like someone was squeezing the ever-loving daylights out of it. Cause wow. For so many reasons. Just wow. Everything about your words just made him go wow.
Then there was always the fact that you mentioned you had always found him admirable, and on top of that, that it would be an honor to be a part of his Squad. There was something about it, something he couldn't quite place, that just made that comment feel so surreal to him. Like he couldn't quite believe you thought that. He didn't realize until now how greatly you thought of him.
He had gotten so used to your teasing and playful antics from time to time, since, just like anyone else you were friends or close with you'd tease and act playful with. Yet with him, you were always thoughtful of keeping it to a fair amount and the subject of the teasing. Many would tease him about his height, but you never once did. That was something he was beyond grateful for.
"Uh- well- I um-" Toshiro started, fumbling his words a bit from the fluster. Which, naturally, you couldn't help but find adorable. He cleared his throat before simply starting from the beginning instead of trying to go from whatever mess just left his mouth. "Th-thank you, (Y/N). It would be an honor to work with you as well." Aaaaand now it was your turn to be flustered.
Without warning, you closed the distance with a quick tackle from where you were sitting and wrapped your arms around him in a hug. In his surprise, a little squawk left him at the sudden hug tackle. You practically squeezed the life out of him with how tightly you were hugging him. After the initial shock and just the brief moment of hesitation, which was mainly to recollect himself, he wrapped his arms around you in return while gently rubbing a hand up and down your back.
Your face had been buried in his chest when you suddenly dived over, so when you finally spoke up after a few beats, your voice was pretty muffled. "Th-thank you, t-t-t-too, captain. That's th-th-the k-k-kindest thing think I've e-ever heard from-from you." Toshiro's only response was a small, affectionate squeeze. You both stayed like that longer than anyone who was simply friends would. But that was your guys' secret. It was always so hard to end a hug between the two of you; neither wanted to be the first.
After a few more moments, you finally let go and pulled away from the hug. Once you were sitting on your knees, you offered a hand to Toshiro, who took your hand and let you help him back up as well. Your gaze fell to your lap once he was back up, a sheepish giggle passing your lips. "S-sorry, I di-didn't mean to kn-kn-kno-kno-knock you over there. "
He scratched the back of his neck, a bit sheepishly as well, with a ghost of a smile. "I-it's alright... Since it's you. Ah... It's getting late. How about I walk you home?"
You hesitated in contemplation before asking. "Are you sure? It's a bit out of the way for you, isn't it?" Since you hadn't fully finished moving everything into your new barracks and the emotional attachment to your current one in Squad 8, you were going to be spending the night there. Considering the quickest path from here back to your respective barracks, it would be slightly out of the way for Toshiro. But for you, he'd do it without hesitation.
"If I wasn't, I wouldn't have asked, now would I? Come on, let's get you home, yeah?” He teased with a smirk as he pushed up off the ground and stood up, offering his hand to you. Thankfully for you, there was just enough moonlight for you to see his smirk. What better way to finish a day, huh? Though you couldn't quite stop the way your cheeks tinted a shade or two pink as you reached out and took his hand. He always did look good with a smile, which is what made the already rare smiles that much better.
With a bit more force than he intended, he pulled you up to your feet. However, it did cause you to stumble just enough forward for Toshiro to reach out and place a hand on your waist to steady you. Meanwhile, your own hand reflexively reached out and ended up landing on his shoulder. Considering you were roughly a foot taller than him, that was no surprise.
Once you were stable and you both realized the current position, you both apologized at the same time, talking over each other in your flustered mess. Though he made damn sure to get the last word in though on promising you that it was alright. Because he may be a tsundere little shit, but he was nothing if not a gentleman.
With that, he walked you back to the Squad 8 barracks for your last night there and as a part of that Squad. Along the way, there was occasional chatter between you two, but for the most part, it was comfortable silence. Which wasn't uncommon between you; it was pleasant.
When you both had finally reached your door, you stopped and turned towards him with a gentle smile. "Thank you, Captain. For walking me back, for tonight and... Welcoming me into your Squad. Also, make sure you head home too and not back to the office, got it?"
Toshiro went to say something but stopped, closing with mouth with a bit of a pout. How did you know what he was planning on doing, and why were you so good at calling him out like this? But he just tried to brush it off as if that totally wasn't his plan. "I... I don't know what you're talking about. I was gonna go sleep..." He muttered as he crossed his arms, though it wasn't all that convincing. Even to himself.
"Please, I know you well enough to know you would absolutely return to the office and get more work done despite the late hour and not get enough sleep. C'mon, you need and deserve some rest."
He tried coming up with an excuse. Multiple times. But failed every single time. Finally, he just gave up, quite reluctantly, knowing he'd been caught. In return, you laughed softly and patted his head a couple of times in an affectionate, reassuring manner. "Don’t worry, I’ll help you with the paperwork as soon as I'm done moving stuff tomorrow, kay?"
He sputtered for a few moments before finally managing out. "Y-you don't have to do that, (Y/N). You barely had any notice about the transfer, and you're still busy with the move. You should take the rest of the day after moving to get settled and relax. Any Squad-related work can wait, I promise you. I appreciate it, but you're health comes first."
"Captain, please, I don't mind. Honest. You're always working so damn hard and don't get enough rest most of the time yourself. I can finish moving the last of the boxes, then come into the office and help with the paperwork, no problem. It won't take long to get the last of it, and unpacking can be done whenever I have the chance."
Once he realized you weren't backing down on this, he ran a hand through his messy white hair with a defeated sigh. "Fine, since I can't convince you otherwise... But if you're too tired tomorrow, at any point, you get some rest. Captain's orders."
Damn, he really used that line, huh? With a breathless chuckle and a shake of your head, you gave in and agreed. "Okay, okay. You win, sheesh. I'll be responsible and get rest tomorrow if I'm too tired. For now, I'll let you get some sleep. Goodnight, Captain Hitsugaya, and sweet dreams."
"Goodnight to you, too, (Y/N). sweet dreams and make sure you take care of yourself too." With a shared smile and a farewell nod and wave, respectfully, the two of you parted for the night. Toshiro making his way back to his own barracks.
A new adventure was right around the corner. They both knew they were going to need sleep for it. Especially now that it was easier for Rangiku to try to get you both together, get blackmail on the two of you, and just in general teasing.
actual things you can do to keep yourself safe online instead of relying on a dni:
don't use your real name! not even your first name, if it's unusual!
don't tell anybody where you live! not even what state you're in! keep that shit a sexy little mystery that's between you and your mail carrier!!
liberally use the block feature!!!! use it!!! just block people if they give you the heebie jeebies!!
don't post selfies that you've also posted on facebook or anywhere else! reverse image search can be used to find your name if the same image is tied to fb or insta or anywhere else your actual name might be
consider not posting selfies at all actually esp if you're a minor......., shit can be dangerous
there's no reason you have to advertise your age if you're a minor <3 you don't have to tell anyone! don't lie, and please don't interact with 18+ content, or with adults who are uncomfortable with people under 18 interacting--but you don't have to go out of you way to say on your blog "hey I'm a minor and a member of a vulnerable community"! and if someone asks then you are allowed to tell them to fuck off
tell people to fuck off if they ask you questions that could be used to identify you
this all counts for discord servers too btw. I'm 26 and as a kid on the internet I was warned about "chatrooms" and told to stay safe and not give out any personal info in a chatroom because that's dangerous. And It Is
discord servers are chatrooms y'all. not everyone in your public fandom discord is your friend
Quick note: I made quick, pretty basic edits for most of the chapters to try to get a general vibe for what's happening. Anyways, on with the show!
You were assigned to Squad 8 after graduating from Shin'o Academy and it wasn't long after that you were assigned the Third seat. It didn't take much nor long before Shunsui and Nanao ended up being the family you never really had before becoming a soul reaper. Actually, there were a number of other captains, lieutenants, as well as a couple of other officers, namely Rukia, Ikkaku, and Yumichicka, who eventually became a part of your family. While some wouldn’t admit it easily or in front of a lot of people, others would joyously announce it to the world. You appreciated every single one of them more than they would ever realize.
You did try to make friends before and during the academy but everyone would always tease and bully you simply because you had a stutter. It usually wasn't too bad, only really stumbling over a few words here and there. It was worse whenever your emotions heightened, didn't matter which ones rose; but it always ended with you stuttering more often. You had gotten used to it so you weren't really embarrassed by it. Granted, that doesn't mean it doesn't frustrate you sometimes, especially when needing to deliver a report. Even though you were more so the quiet type, especially around those you didn't really know, you could also be one of the bubbliest people when with those you cared about. They simply brought that side of you out more naturally. It didn't necessarily mean you weren't quiet around the closer ones, you still usually were. They just saw more of who you are.
That's something Captain Hitsugaya always enjoyed about you. It was a few years after joining the 13 Court Guard squad, you were sitting outside the Seireitei near a forest with a wonderful view. It was an amazing spot to watch the sun rise and set. You'd often go there after a long day to unwind before heading back home. Apparently, you weren't the only one who found this spot perfect. One day, Captain Hitsugaya was walking over to the same place you had been to so many times before. He too had been there plenty of times but due to the numerous, quite high piles of paperwork he's been dealing with once again, he hasn't had the time. Up until today. As he approached, he noticed you sitting with your arms behind you, propping yourself up on them.
He sat a couple of feet away, giving you plenty of space but keeping within range if either decided to say something. As he sat down, you looked over curiously, noticing movement from the corner of your eye. You smiled a little, hesitating before calling a greeting out. "Hel-hel-hello, Captain Hitsugaya!" You had occasionally exchanged small talk before, never really knowing him personally, but you had always found him quite admirable and talented. You were always curious about him but never really found the courage to talk to him more often. He hummed slightly in an automatic response before looking over at you. "Hello to you as well, Third Seat (L/N). Come to watch the sunset as well?"
You nod a bit. “Mhm. I always enjoy watching it, especially after a long d-d-day. It's quite relaxing, wouldn't you agree?" A ghost of a smile tugged at the corners of his lips. "Indeed it is. You haven't been having too much trouble, have you? I know Captain Kyoraku can be quite the handful sometimes. Then again so can a number of any other Soul Reaper..." Your eyes widened a little, surprise was quick to stun you. You weren't expecting him to check on how you were. Everyone knew Captain Kyoraku could be more on the lazy side, especially when dealing with paperwork, but not many had asked how you were handling it or in general, everything. It was nice. While he can be quite the handful, both he and Nanao were like the family you never had, so you didn't quite mind as much compared to if he was a stranger. They always looked out for you and you did the same for them.
"Nope, not anymore. it wa-wa-was rough at first but I've grown accustomed to Soul Reaper life. While Captain Kyoraku can be a-a handful, he's always been rather kind and helpful since I jo-jo-jo-joined his Squad. Same with Lieutenant Ise. How have you been though? I heard you got a mini mountain of paperwork recently. You can't forget to take care of yourself too, ya know." Toshiro waved his hand in a 'don't worry about it' manner, turning his gaze back to the setting sun. "I'm glad to hear it. Ah yes, well, I managed to finish it just before coming here. Took a while, per usual, but it needs to be done. I have been taking care of myself. Granted, may not be the standard amount but, it's still done. Thank you." "You're wel-welcome."
With that, silence filled the air once more as you both watched the colors painting the sky. A small breeze would pass by from time to time, much like the little conversations you and Toshiro would share. They weren't terribly long nor all that interesting to most but they were always peaceful. Some were ice breakers, others were just sudden questions or comments one of you had. The conversations flowed naturally when started, then faded into a comfortable silence once more before the cycle began again. You always struggled to talk to him before like this, but this time, that nervousness dissipated into relaxation.
After that, you both would "accidentally" bump into each other in that area quite a bit to watch the sun rise and/or set. Thanks to that, you talked and learned more about each other. A friendship forming quickly and effortlessly between the two. It didn't take much after that for more so romantic feelings to start blossoming. You had been friends for a few years at that point, hanging out more often during breaks or after work; not just by the woods anymore away from so many people during the early or late hours of the day. It was nice. You had never expected to befriend the infamously 'cold' Captain Hisugaya of Squad 10, but you'd done it. Now, you have to deal with these sudden new feelings that wormed their way in.
Man oh man was it a struggle to keep these feelings at bay. You don't know when or what exactly happened, but you realized one day during a break that you did have some more than platonic feelings for the short Captain. You couldn't help it, there were just so many qualities about him that made your heart soar above the clouds. You came to the decision it was best not to say anything, fearing putting your friendship at risk. That didn't stop the blushing, shyness, increased stuttering, sudden nerves, or racing heart. Unfortunately for you, a dear friend of yours was quick to pick up on that. Why unfortunate?
Because it just so happened to be Rangiku Matsumoto, and she would be relentless in her teasing as well as matchmaking plots. Naturally, it was only a matter of time before she or your Captain realized it. Both were quite nosy about other people's personal lives and well, let's admit it, you weren't all that successful in hiding it. Then again, you were quite oblivious to the effect you had on Toshiro. Around you, he smiled a tad more often, seemed more relaxed, was more patient, and generally kinder. The only person who realized the effect you had on each other was Rangiku, and even then it wouldn't be horribly long before word spread to at least a few others about your little crush.
Rangiku asked you to lunch a few days later. You agreed and followed her to a cozy restaurant you both enjoyed during your break. Talk flowed freely and easily. Granted Rangiku was doing most of the chatting, which neither of you minded, it made your dynamic all the more special. Most of it was catching up, talking about the latest news and any potential ideas for the Women's Soul Reaper Association. "It's so cute how my best friend here has a crush on my Captain! You two would be adorable together." The way she said that so casually and out of the blue nearly made you choke on your food. After a small coughing fit and a drink to recover, you look across the table with a red face, partially from embarrassment and partially from the incident just mere moments ago.
"I-I-I-I'm so-sorry. I don't thi-think I heard you-you properly. What was that?' You asked, stumbling more than usual, the embarrassment had won. Rangiku grinned, resting her elbow on the table by her plate and her head on her hand. She took a drink before replying in a teasing tone. "I said, your little crush was cute and that you and the Captain would be adorable together." "I don't know what you could possibly mean. I-I-I don't-" Rangiku smiled gently, carefully reaching over and patting your head. "It's alright. You're allowed to feel your emotions. Truthfully, as much as I love teasing you, I'll be here to help and support you always. I can tell you're nervous about these feelings, which is completely fine. But remember, there are people backing you up a hundred percent of the way and however you decide to handle things is ultimately your choice. Trust me when I say this, you've had an impact on Captain Hitsugaya and whenever you feel like you are ready to take that plunge, he will be with you for it. You really would make a wonderful couple. For now, let's enjoy the rest of our food before break is over!”
You covered your face with your hands, trying to hide the rising blush. "There's no way I could have made that much of an impact on him..." You mumble to yourself, muffled by your hands. She may like to avoid 'boring' work tasks and often be on the less serious side of things, she knows when to be serious and is actually one of the best people to ask for advice or help from. That's something you always liked about her: no matter how carefree she's acting at that moment, she switches and is rather serious about doing what she can to help. Her reassurance has always been nice, even before you had made friends with the extroverted woman. Once you both had finished, you went to pay but she stopped you as soon as she saw your wallet. She paid for both of your meals before walking back towards the Seireitei. Random conversation resumed like normal on the way. When you had to depart, she patted your back with a warm smile. "Remember, let yourself feel it. Don't try to shove it down all the time. Having a crush isn't something to be ashamed about."
"Oh? Does (Y/N) have a crush on someone?" A sudden voice appeared, the owner of it just having come around the corner with a soft, curious smile. 'Of course Izuru had to walk by right now...' You thought to yourself, feeling your cheeks grow warm in embarrassment that another now knew. Izuru noticed how your cheeks tinted pink and chuckled, reaching out and giving you a reassuring pat on the back. "Rangiku is right, you know. I do apologize, however, I know I shouldn't have heard that." "It's alright. J-Just.. Make sure it s-stays between us. Got it?" You crossed your arms, raising an eyebrow while saying 'got it' to really drive the point through.
Izuru nods, holding his hands up in a light-hearted mock surrender. "I promise, your secret is safe with me, (Y/N). I was actually looking for you.. I was supposed to receive some paperwork from Captain Kyoraku earlier, but no one in Squad 3 has yet to see it. Would you mind checking its status?" There was a brief pause of surprise. Usually between Nanao and you, things got done efficiently and on time. A sharp exhale came from your nose as you pinched the bridge of your nose in a moment of exasperation. "My apologies on behalf of my Captain, Izuru. Don't worry, either Nanao or I will make sure it's delivered before the end of the day." Izuru chuckles softly, waving his hand in dismissal. "Not to worry. Thank you though, (Y/N)." You nod once in acknowledgement with a soft smile tugging at the corners of your lips. Goodbye pleasantries were exchanged amongst the three of you before Izuru went about his day.
After a moment, you looked to Rangiku with eyes narrowed in thought. Rangiku notices the look she's receiving and tilts her head, her eyebrows furrowed in confusion. "Huh? What's up? And why the look?" "Because I'm starting to truly understand how Captain Hitsugaya feels when you don't do your work." You calmly explained with a shrug of your shoulders. Shaking your head with a quiet sigh, you continued. "I swear, I don't know who's worse. You or Captain Kyoraku." Rangiku paused before laughing at the comparison. She reached out, patting your back with an almost teasing smirk. "Well, you could always see about helping out or... Even a transfer?"
That immediately caught you off guard. A transfer to Squad 10? There were pros and cons to that, but could you really do something like that? Just leave Squad 8 behind simply for Captain Hitsugaya. Finally, you spoke up, a mix of emotions etched into your expression. The main one was concern. "B-but what about Nanao? She'd be back to dealing with so-so much work herself. Be-besides, shouldn't you be helping C-Captain Hitsugaya more anyway?" Rangiku playfully rolls her eyes, placing her hands on your shoulders with a comforting squeeze. "Nanao will be just fine. You're overthinking it. Trust me, Captain would be ecstatic to have you join us. Especially since our Third Seat just transferred and we're looking for someone to fill in."
You tried finding some kind of reply, stuttering and stumbling over your words as you came up short handed. She had a point and you knew it deep down, even if you didn't want to admit it. Once a defeated sigh escaped your lips, Rangiku broke out into a triumphant smile. With that, the two of you exchanged goodbyes for the time being. There was still work to be done after all. On the way back to the Squad 8 office, you couldn't stop thinking about the idea of transferring and all the mixed emotions that came with it. Part of you wanted to do it but the other part wasn't so sure. The pros balanced out the cons. Would it be worth it? What would happen if you left Squad 8? What would your Captain and Lieutenant think about the idea? So many questions and not enough answers. Next thing you know, you're back at the office. After knocking on the door and announcing yourself, Shunsui responded with a hint of playfulness to his tone.
"Come in, dear (Y/N)! You know you don't always have to knock." He chuckled as you stepped into the office, flashing you a smile. "I know, Captain, but it's only respectful to do so." You returned his smile with a gentle one of your own while walking towards where he lay on the floor. "Captain, do you perhaps know where that paperwork for Squad 3 is?" Shunsui hummed in thought, tapping his chin as he tried to remember what had happened to it. "Ah yes! It's on my desk under a few other things I was filling out earlier. I take it a member of Squad 3 was asking about it?" As he talked, he sat up and pushed his hat up to sit properly on his head. You nodded in confirmation, watching as he stood up and made his way to his desk. He dug through a small pile of papers as you began explaining.
"Yes sir. Lieutenant Kira stopped me on the way back from lunch and asked about them. Probably since those should have gone out earlier." "I meant to give these to you before lunch to deliver but you and Nanao were already preoccupied with something else. And I would've hated cutting into your lunch break. I apologise for troubling you, dear (Y/N)." While handing you the papers, he ruffled your hair with an apologetic smile. "It's alright, Captain. I'll be back shortly then." With a curt nod, you turned around and left the office while holding the few papers that were paperclipped together to your torso. After the door shut, Shunsui and Nanao glanced at each other with a confused expression. You weren't as lively as normal, nor did you briefly scold Shunsui for not having these sent out earlier. You seemed a bit more... Distracted.
After walking through the Seireitei for a decent amount of time, you arrived at the office for Squad 3. Once again, you knocked and announced yourself out of respect for those inside. You heard Izuru's voice come from the other side, permitting you to enter. You opened the door and stepped inside, closing it behind you. We still had yet to find new Captains to replace the holes left by Aizen, Gin, and Tosen. Until then, the Lieutenants from Squad 3 and 9 were temporarily in charge, the Third Seat of Squad Five was in charge while Momo recovered from the effects of Aizen's betrayal. "Hey, Lieutenant Kira, I just came to deliver those papers from my Captain. I apologize once more for him, he truly did mean to have they sent out before lunch." You explained with an apologetic smile.
"it's alright, they were still delivered in the end and that's what's important right now." Izuru reassured, taking the papers from you and setting them on the desk. When he turned around to face you once more, he noticed that look on your face you got when overthinking something. "(Y/N)? Is something bothering you? You're more than welcome to talk about it if you'd like." You were a bit surprised that Izuru had caught onto you so quickly. As you ran a hand through your hair, a tired sigh escaped your lips. After a moment of hesitation, you spoke up in a softer tone. "Rangiku m-mentioned that the Third Seat position in Squad 10 opened up since they re-recently transferred. I know it was mainly to t-tease me but... There was a hint of seriousness to her vo-vo-voice. I can't stop thinking about it and about what would h-happen if I did. The pros and cons are even. I guess.. I'm not exactly sure what I should do.."
Izuru could see why you were so caught up in your thoughts now. That was a big decision for anyone. Especially for someone who cared about those in their squad as much as you did, but also would help anyone given the opportunity. It was two conflicting sides and you were in the middle, being pulled back and forth. Izuru finally spoke up after contemplating your words, his voice gentle and reassuring. "Maybe that wouldn't be such a bad idea. Transferring to Squad 10. Captain Kyoraku has Nanao to help him still, if you did transfer. I'm sure Captain Hitsugaya would appreciate help with all his work. Whether you transfer or not, everyone knows how hard working and strong you are. They'll be happy to have you no matter which squad you're a part of."
You nodded, listening to Izuru's input. He too was right. It made you start to consider the transfer just a little more now. "Hm.. That's true enough.. Thanks Izuru for the input. I appreciate it lots. I should get back, still plenty to do. See ya later, Izuru. Take care of yourself, alright." I smiled softly, leaving no room for objections at the end. Izuru nodded, returning your smile with one of his own. "Bye and I will, don't worry. You best do the same, (Y/N)." "Yeah, yeah. I will." You chuckled softly, waving to Izuru as you left the Squad 3 office to return to your Squad's office once more.
After returning to the Squad 8 office, Shunsui and Nanao immediately pulled you over to sit on the couch, sitting on either side of you. To say the least, you were once again left in confusion by their actions. "Um... Wh-what's happening, guys?" Shunsui was the first to speak up, scanning your face for any idea of what was going on in that head of yours. "You seemed off earlier. Is there something troubling you, (Y/N)?" You sighed, realizing that Shunsui caught on rather quickly in that brief time between returning from lunch and going to Squad 3. Seeing no harm in explaining what happened during lunch, you decide to tell them. Starting with Rangiku's teasing, to the mention of work, the opening Third Seat in Squad 10, Rangiku's suggestion to transfer and even Izuru's encouragement on the matter. How confused you were, the mix of emotions at the idea, the uncertainty if it was a good idea. That you wanted to stay with squad 8 and continue helping, but also wanting to be able to help Captain Hitsugaya as well.
It didn't take long for Shunsui to piece together the parts you left out; why you were being teased or why you wanted to help Captain Hitsugaya so much. With a warm, reassuring smile, Shunsui reached over and rubbed your back in a comforting manner. A habit he picked up long ago when you first joined Squad 8 and were overthinking something. "There, there dear (Y/N). You don't need to stress that adorable noggin' of yours over this. I think it's a fine idea as well. I'm sure Captain Hitsugaya would be quite happy having someone as hard working and strong as you on his squad." Shunsui had noticed over time your reactions change when a certain Captain was brought up. A bit bigger smile, more color to your cheeks, the increase in stuttering. It didn't take too much after that to figure out that you had most likely developed a crush for the infamous tsundere captain. And Shunsui wanted nothing more than to see you happy and healthy.
Both Nanao and yourself were a bit taken aback by Shunsui's agreement that the transfer wasn't such a bad idea. Nanao shot Shunsui a questioning look from the other side of you, wondering what he was scheming this time. He simply chuckled, pardoning himself and Nanao for a moment before stepping away and whispering to each other. You could tell Shunsui had a reason for this, one you weren't supposed to know. At least, not yet. After Shunsui explained what his idea was to Nanao and what he had witnessed of your eventual change in reaction when the topic of Hitsugaya was brought up, Nanao pushed her glasses up and nodded firmly. She was fully on board.
After they came back and sat next to you once again, Nanao smiled. "I have to agree. I think the transfer could prove to be quite good for not only Captain Hitsugaya but for you as well, (Y/N). No matter what you decide, now or any point in the future, we will always be here for you. You're a part of our family, nothing could ever change that." If at all possible, your heart would have literally melted into a puddle from the reassurance. Your chest filled with warmth as a happy, goofy grin spread across your face. Those two always knew just the right things to say to help. You wrapped your arms around Nanao and Shunsui, pulling them into a tight hug with a little squeeze. "I don't know what I'd do without you two.." You muttered as the pair returned your hug.
These two were the first people you considered family after coming to the Soul Society and they felt the same about you. Worming your way into each other's hearts and lives as if it was the most natural thing for the three of you. You could never find the proper words to express how grateful you were to them. You always tried, whether verbally or written down, you could never find just the right thing to say. But that's alright because your actions, and hugs especially, would always be there to do the job perfectly.
Eventually, the end of the day came. Nanao had left a little bit before you since you decided to finish up some odds and ends clean up and organization to be prepared for the next day. Shunsui had pretended to fall asleep, for once, so he could execute his plan without anyone knowing. Since Shunsui had a habit of randomly napping, you just assumed that's what had happened once again. You shook your head with a fond smile as you walked to the closet to retrieve a blanket for your Captain. You moved silently through the room, back towards Shunsui as he leaned back in his chair with his hat tilted to cover his face. Carefully as to not wake him, you draped the blanket over your captain, who you thought to be asleep.
As you exited the office, you whispered a simple 'goodnight, Shunsui' before closing the office door and going to your quarters. Under his hat, Shunsui had been smiling fondly at your caring actions. Once he was sure the coast was clear, he pushed his hat back atop his head while sitting up in his chair. "Goodnight, (Y/N). You truly are a sweet one." He uttered softly to himself as he glanced at the office door. He turned his gaze back to his desk, turning on the small lamp that sat on top of it. Shunsui dug out a piece of paper from the drawers of his desk.
Grabbing a pen, he began filling it out with the help of the small, simple desk lamp nearby. After it was finished, he stood up and folded the blanket that (Y/N) draped over him. He swiftly returned it to its home in the closet before returning to his desk. He grabbed the paper, turning the lamp off in the process before exiting the office. He had to drop this off when all was still and quiet before he could return to his quarters and call it a night.
The next morning when Toshiro had arrived at his office and sat behind his desk, he was greeted with quite the shock. There, sitting in the middle of his desk as plain as day was a transfer paper. His brows furrowed in confusion as he picked it up and read it over. He would have never suspected that he'd see this in regards to you. It was baffling to him. You didn't often complain about Shunsui's habits. Instead, you were always one to talk so highly of your Captain and Lieutenant. It was clear to see how much they meant to you and that you were content being in Squad 8 with them. So... What could have possibly brought this about?
After some thought, Toshiro didn't see any problems with accepting the transfer. He was well aware of your work ethic and how strong you were. You would be a good addition. Plus it would mean getting to see you more often. Not like he'd ever admit that as a reason though. He signed off on the transfer with a ghost of a smile. Soon sending it off back to Squad 8. As he began his work, his mind would occasionally drift to you and the new adventure that this would bring. He wouldn't admit it easily or probably ever, but he was happy that you would be joining his squad.
Captain Of My Heart {Toshiro Hitsugay X Reader} (Masterlist)
Note: This doesn't follow any of the Bleach events or arcs, for several reasons.
There will be cursing every so often. The MC does have a stutter because I've seen so many various forms of media using the 'cute, shy nerdy character' type of stutter so I wanted to do something with it I don't see often but personally have; throwing a bit of representation out there for others with a stutter that doesn't appear often but happens more often when their emotions are heightened.
To anyone who's embarrassed by their stutter: if you have a stutter of any kind, that has it for any reason, doesn't matter how long you've had it just know that it doesn't diminish your worth and you're still amazing!
On with the book description!
You were third seat in Squad 8 and had been for a while after graduating from the academy. Captain Kyoraku and Lieutenant Nanao quickly became the family you never really had in the Soul Society. You may normally be on the more quiet side but around those you are closer to you can be quite the bubbly personality. it didn't take long after joining the 13 Court Guard Squads to make friends with a number of the Lieutenants and Captains, a few others becoming older siblings as well. Over time, you even became close to the infamously cold Captain, Toshiro Hitsugaya; not only that but you fell head over heels for him. What happens when your Captain suggests a transfer to Squad 10? Will you confess before being sent on a mission that no one truly knows how long it will take? Will things be the same after you've been gone for a while or will everything change for the worst?
Using bodies to distract themselves from the fact that they don’t have someone to call their forever; that they aren’t worthy of anything more than just a one night stand or a casual fling.
Lying awake in the dark for the nth time, alone once again, the creeping dread of being alone forever eating away at them; the space next to them empty like it always ends up.
Finding someone and latching onto them for as long as they can, only to be left heartbroken, thoughts of things being this way forever so, so scary; wanting to believe they deserve love but perhaps they don’t and it’s something they have to be okay with.
Hope at this point becomes false hope, because it’s starting to feel like they’re the reason no one wants to stay.
“Am I not enough of a reason for you to want to stay?” they would wonder on nights when nothing could distract them from their looming thoughts.
So when someone else comes along, they try to sabotage it because they think it wouldn’t work out anyway. As much as they like them, there’s a part of them that’s scared things won’t last, and they aren’t ready for another crushing disappointment.
Numbness is a self-defence mechanism at this point, and it’s quite clear to the both of them that that’s the case.
That person doesn’t leave, though. Not even when they’re being difficult as fuck. They go through many talks, and as frustrated as they are with them at times, they are very firm when they tell them they aren’t gonna leave and will be here for them through thick and thin; that they’re someone they do not want to lose.
Tears streaming down their face when they realise they’ve finally found someone who doesn’t want to lose them; that they’re worthy of unconditional love, as flawed as they are.
“You’re the first person to have ever told me that,” they whisper, voice thick with tears, as the other person holds them while they cry.
