The Game {2P Canada X Reader}
James groaned as the knocking at his front door repeated. He tried to ignore it but the person on the other side seemed persistent. He unwillingly abandoned his pancake batter, heading to the reason for his annoyance. He opened his front door, his usual bored expression greeting whoever would be on the other side. That melted into a ghost of a smile seeing you on the other side. You had been a soft spot not long after he met you. For a while, he denied the reason. Well, until he couldn't anymore. "Hey Maple, what's up?"
You looked up to the male before you, grinning as you brought your hands from behind your back. "Lookie! I managed to get terrific seats for your favorite hockey team! I was wondering if you aren't busy if you'd like to go with me?" You grew more and more nervous as you said the last part. Damn nerves. James stared at you in stunned silence. He was planning on getting tickets and asking you, unfortunately they were gone before he had the chance. You bit your lip, growing more and more anxious the longer he was quiet. "James?" He blinked a few times, shaking his head a little. "Uh yeah, I'll go with you."
You immediately close the gap between you too, enveloping him in a tight hug. James quirks an eyebrow at you before slowly returning the hug. He pats your head before asking. "Do you want me to pick you up or meet there?" You pause, humming in thought. "I'm not sure? I don't want you to have to go out of your way or something but it's always nice hanging out with you." "Then it's decided, I'll pick you up." You nod, a bit of pink dusting your cheeks.
"Alright. Well, I gotta go now, still have errands to run. I'll see ya later, James!" You smile and wave before jogging to your car that was parked behind James. James waves, watching your figure retreat to your car. 'If she still has errands to run, why did she stop here first?' He questions, walking back inside and to the kitchen. Various different reasons ran through his head as he finally started making his pancakes. There were still a few days before the game so both of you had plenty of time to have excitement and nerves build up.
A few days later, you were currently getting ready for the game. There were still a few hours to go before it started but if you guys wanted to get there on time, it was better to leave early. Especially since it was a town over and it takes at least an hour to get there. Not to mention finding a parking spot. Just as you finished and slipped your shoes on, there was a knock at the door. You grab your purse, making your way towards your front door. Upon opening it, you spot James with his hands shoved in his pockets, looking at the various flowers growing on your porch.
"They're blooming nicely this year. I guess Oliver really does know his way around plants." He nods. "More than most would realize. Well, shall we then?" You hum in agreement, locking the door before getting in the truck with James. As James drove to your destination, he leaned forward a bit, grabbing the aux cord before passing it to you. "Here. It's your turn to pick the music." You grin, pulling it into your phone before turning on a playlist you made of songs you both loved. James chuckled softly hearing the first song. He shot you a glance as you started singing along before joining you.
After a bit, you finally reached town. Now just to deal with traffic at the parking lot and find a parking space. When you reached the parking lot, James sighed in relief at the fact there wasn't as much traffic trying to get in. Finding an open and relatively decent spot didn't take as long either, which was just an added bonus. Soon enough, you and James were both on your way inside. "I'll be right back. I'm gonna get us some drinks and snacks while the line is still short." "Alright, I'll wait for you here." You nod and speed walk over to the concession stand, making sure to get in line before anyone else has the same idea.
Unfortunately, the thing you didn't have to worry about was getting in line but trying to make it back to James without getting stopped. You were in the middle of walking back to where you left James when someone stopped you. Being the considerate person you were, stopped to see what they could possibly want. "Um, may I help you?" They smirked, looking you over. "Yeah, your number would be a great help, actually." You sighed, shaking your head. "No. I already like someone and I'm currently trying to get back to my friend." You were considerate but you were always blunt in these cases. You never really understood why people said 'sorry' before they let someone, especially a stranger, down.
You went to step around them but they just matched your step instead. Persistent bastard. "Come on, I bet I can be more fun than whoever it is you supposedly like or are hanging out with. Besides, I'm sure your friend will understand." Growing more annoyed, you shake your head. "I already told you, I'm not interested. Go find someone else to bother." Once more you tried to go around him but he stepped in front of you again.
Just over his shoulder, you noticed James quickly making his way toward you. You smile softly knowing he was there to help you. The person took your smile in the exact opposite way, however. "Finally decided to join me then?" James kept his usual bored expression but internally he was scowling. He walked up to you, taking the drinks from you. "Hey Maple, let's go find our seats. Just ignore this prick." You nod, your smile only growing. As you were beginning to walk away you could hear the person saying something along the lines of 'being a bitch'. You snicker to yourself at that.
While walking to your seats, you playfully nudge James with your elbow. "Thanks for your help back there." James shook his head, looking over at you. "You're welcome. Besides, I told you I would always be there to help you, right?" You hum softly, taking your seat beside James. There were still a few minutes before the game started as you passed him his snacks. He mumbled a 'thanks' and soon enough the final prep began before the game officially started. Within the first fifteen minutes, you rested your head against James' shoulder. He had gotten used to it over the years and reflexively wrapped an arm around your shoulders.
Apparently, whoever was operating the Kiss Cam saw the two of you together and thought you were the perfect people. In a moment's notice, you saw James and yourself on the screen. You blushed bright red, quickly hiding your face behind your hands. Meanwhile, James was shaking his head, mouthing 'no'. You could hear various 'boos' around the rink but you didn't care, you were way too embarrassed to see if it was because of a play or because of the Kiss Cam.
For some reason, the camera kept coming back to the two of you. A lot. 'Weird, I've never seen any of these target people so often...' You thought to yourself. Before you could try to focus back on the game or think of why it would do that, you noticed it came back to you once again. It wasn't even at the halfway point of the game yet! This had to be around the tenth time, at least. James rolled his eyes when he noticed it too.
In a swift movement, James slipped one of his hands behind your head and crashed his lips against yours. Your face immediately turned a deep red, and shyly you returned the kiss. The crowd cheered and sooner than you hoped, you both pulled away. Letting the nerves get the best of you, you hid your face into his side. James chuckled quietly, patting your head. 'Fuck, I wish I would've done that a lot earlier... Maybe this will be the day I ask her out...' James looked down at you before returning to watch the game.
You may have looked like you were watching the game, which you kind of were, but your mind was mostly focused elsewhere. Namely James, the kiss, and your feelings. Your brain was a scrambled mess and your heart was somehow really tense but also melted into a puddle. James wasn't doing much better but he was doing better at not letting it show. Despite the nerves you both were feeling, you stayed close to each other for the rest of the game.
Once the game ended and you managed to get back to the main area, you threw your trash away. "I wonder why they kept coming back to us..." You thought aloud, blushing at the memory. James shrugged, taking your hand as he led you through the crowded area to the front doors. "Dunno. Do you want to come over for dinner? If you're free..." You smile, keeping ahold of his hands even after you leave the building and walk to the truck. "Yeah, you're a way better cook than I am." A ghost of a smile plays on his lips once again. 'God, it really is the smallest of things that make me fall harder for you, (Y/N)."
The drive back was relatively quieter than when you typically rode with each other. This time James had one of his playlists going. You occasionally would sing along but for the most part, your mind kept going back to the kiss earlier. Your feelings, his feelings. What would happen now? Should you confess? Would your relationship change if he said no? Goddamn, feelings were hard.
About an hour and a half later, James pulls into his driveway and parks the car. Kuma, who was laying on the porch, looked up toward the vehicle. As both of you got out and walked toward the front door, Kuma immediately went over to you, rubbing his head against your hand and side, looking for attention. James shook his head, opening the door for you. You smiled and scurried inside, giving Kuma the attention he seemed to desperately crave. "Always such an attention whore when (Y/N) is around."
Kuma huffs at his owner while you giggle. "Kuma is so cute though! It's hard to tell him no." "Ya know, he could easily eat you if he wanted to, right? And you're still gonna call him cute?" Kuma shook his head, knocking you to the floor before sitting on your lap and nuzzling into you. "Yep! Besides, it doesn't seem like he would want to eat me. Waaait... James, are you perhaps jealous?" You sang the last bit in a teasing tone, smirking at your friend in the kitchen. James' cheeks turned a bright red as he turned away to hide it. "T-That's just silly, Maple."
Kuma looked towards his owner with the most deadpan look a polar bear could have and practically gave a disbelieving huff. You laugh, hiding your face in the bear's side. "Don't worry James, I promise you'll always be my favorite! I mean how could you not be when I'm in love with you." Despite growing quieter at the last sentence, he still heard you. Since you were hiding in Kuma's side, you hadn't noticed James coming closer to grab Kuma's food dish. James stopped just short, staring at you with a surprised look and pink coating his face. "Did I hear you right?"
You tense up, slowly peaking up at the now quite closer James. "Th-That you'll always be my favorite?" James shook his head. "The other part, (Y/N). The last part. You love me?" You look down, playing with Kuma's fur. "Yeah, I am. I have been for years, I just was too nervous to say anything." James walked closer and kneeled down in front of you, moving his large companion off your lap. He gently cupped your cheek, tilting your head up to see one of his genuine smiles. "Man, now I really look like an idiot, ey? I should've asked you out way sooner.
You lean into his hand, smiling. Before you could respond, Kuma decided to take matters into his own hands... Well, paws. With a nudge from behind you, you fell onto James who wrapped his free arm around you. You both started leaning forward, closing the already small gap. This kiss was more gentle but still got each of your feelings across. You wrapped your arms around his neck as he pulled you closer. When air became too much of a necessity, you pulled away with a shy smile and pink covering both of your cheeks. "Maple, will you be my girlfriend?" "Yes! Of course, I will."
----------------Flashback to end of the game------------------------
Allen grinned mischievously as he opened his wallet. Taking out a twenty, he passed it to the person operating the kiss cam. "Thanks for the help man." "Yeah, yeah, it's no problem. What are friends for? Just make sure no one catches you leaving this area, I don't want to have to cover for your ass again." Allen chuckles as he leaves. "Whatever you say!"
Note: I don't know anything about sports. I barely remember stuff from when I played soccer so if hockey doesn't have kiss cams then oops. Just wanted to write a 2p Canada one with this plot lmao. Don't expect much accuracy whenever I mention sports!
