This is a wonderful video by Zoe Bee on plagiarism. If you have the time and a passing interest in the matter, I recommend checking it out – though if you do, please stick around past the eight minute mark.
I am particularly drawn to her points on how plagiarism reflect issues beyond the individual bad actors and that as groups (universities, online spaces) we can address issues of attribution. The video also makes a great point about the type of person who is most likely to successfully pass off the works of others as their own.
The beginning section is really interesting because it plays with the audience’s trust, which supports a larger message about the need to verify trusted sources. The fact that she doesn’t single out any new instances of individuals doing plagiarism also helps to sell her point that we have to think beyond single bad actors. Overall, I like the intentionality of even these elements that were played off as matters of style or taste, yet also build toward the video’s larger message.
