@ me all you want but y’all need to get over this idea of Canada being a safe haven for all that’s progressive. Not only has Canada enduringly and severely failed to meet the needs of its indeginous communities and populations, as well as other minorities; but the idea that one place, like Canada, can be perfectly isolated from injustice, is illogical.

You think we can make more than half our products in another country, but injustice can’t be outsourced in that same way? This is one of the many applications of the MLK Jr. quote, “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.”

I used to want to move to Canada because I thought, as an LGBTQ+ person, I would be safer there. I’ve come to realize two things about that though. Even if it is safer there, and it might not necessarily be, there’s no guarantee that fleeing perceived danger might not lead me to more trouble. More importantly though is that to try and get away from that fear of bad and or wrong things happening, is one of the very forces that enable those bad things to spread and propagate.

I can’t with a clear conscious encourage people to do things that put them in harms way, but people need to recognize that inaction promotes injustice, and fleeing the scene is no better, idealizing about other places is no better. Inaction is a choice like any other, and I hope that it becomes less uncommon for people to recognize that complacency is compliance, no matter how far away you are. If you’re aware of injustice, don’t run from it unless it’s for your safety, and if you can and you’re willing, fucking fight it.
