do yall think it took Luca a little while to get used to gravity?
like do y’all think that, for the first few days on the surface, he was dropping objects mid-air and looking for them upward and around, before realizing they were on the ground, like those videos of astronauts dropping cups and pens? or seeing the tower for the first time and trying to walk upwards, rather than climb, because he’s never climbed anything before in his life?
I love the face that Luca makes right when he’s about to do something he doesn’t want to do, but will do because it seems/is necessary.
A depressing ass hc me and oomf accidentally created:
Underfed/disordered eating Luca
I mean I like darker hcs, we just don’t have much cause Luca is a (mostly) nice and innocent little world but an underfed/disordered eating Luca makes a concerning amount of sense to me (as someone who was underfed as a kid)
(And while I do project onto Luca quite a bit, this is one of the times where it, 1: makes quite a lot of sense, and 2: means a lot to me. Also depressing headcanons pave the way for the cutest headcanons, especially for ships)
• Like we all obv know about the one snack he got for lunch, and while I don’t think his parents were DELIBERATELY under-feeding him and I don’t think he’s severely underweight, I do still think they were under-feeding him, just accidentally.
• I think it’s partly to do with his mum trying to shut down his curiosity like she did in the movie. She’s sending him back to work before finishing lunch for asking questions, Luca’s like main trait is his curiosity, this has probably happened quite a bit, which also means he’s probably not been eating enough
• Also let’s be honest, Daniela would 100% be the type of parent to be way too obsessed with “healthy” eating to the point where she accidentally was underfeeding him
• There’s also his body type compared to the rest of his family. His whole family (that we see) are plus size, Daniela, Lorenzo, Grandma and Ugo are all the same body type, a plus size body type, while Luca is skinny. Realistically if they were eating the same things, Luca should be a similar body shape/size to his family, especially considering they are all similar to each other but he’s just… not
• While he is the youngest of the underdogs, under the lens of this hc, it is concerning that he is so short. The only source I could really find said he is 4’11 and he’s 13, nearly 14, that’s pretty short for a boy his age, I would know cause that was my height at that age and everyone my age was a lot taller than me, and I *was* underfed) this could very easily be stunted growth, which is commonly caused by lack of nutrition/feeding
• Then there’s the getting full the quickest. While I understand it was a challenge as part of the race so it’s supposed to be a lot, he was struggling when compared to Giulia (sure she’s done it before but eating that much once a year doesn’t make you better at it next year, how much you can eat in one sitting is really dependent on how much you eat everyday)
• “Oh but he ate the trenette al pesto quickly and wasn’t full” I hear you saying to yourself. The only thing he “ate” that day was, at most, a small chunk of gelato. He ran away from home immediately after the fight with his mum so at night/early morning, got to Alberto’s tower at around dawn that day (we can see the sun barely up) so he would’ve skipped breakfast. We can assume they didn’t have anything else to eat as they spent most of their afternoon busy with going to and being in portorosso (and Alberto kinda confirms it with “I’m definitely hungry”)
Of course Luca would devour the (smaller than the race) plate of pasta, poor boy was starving that day
• Also I’m not sure if you can burp underwater but if you can then it’s also kinda concerning that he’s never eaten enough to burp/was so surprised by it during the race because surely they’d have some sort of sea monster celebration where they eat a lot of food AT LEAST, he should’ve experienced this before
Anyways, in conclusion, Daniela, feed your damn child.
Also this frame (I shamelessly took from an edit) shows both boys standing right next to eachother so no foreshortening, so it should be fairly accurate of their width
I only measured their waists cause I’m lazy but Luca is a whole tick of the markup ruler skinnier than Alberto. That’s probably not a whole lot but Alberto is a similar age to Luca, he’s quite a lot taller than Luca so his weight should be more spread out meaning it’d take more weight to make him that wide than it would for Luca, and he has to actually find his own food while Luca lives in a thriving farming village. Luca realistically should not be skinnier than Alberto

Ok so Luca Clips have been showing up on my TikTok fyp and it’s mostly the start of the movie, which has me thinking about the start and noticing little things… anyways
Alberto seems to already know about the other sea monsters’ fear of the surface/humans as he is not at all surprised by Luca’s overreaction to the change, just nonchalantly saying “First time?” to all that screaming and kicking Luca did, and I think Alberto, as a thief, has actually capitalised on this fear because why else would he disguise himself as a human with the diving suit and harpoon when searching for stuff to take underwater?
He’s either 1: making sure no sea monsters go near “his” stuff like Luca did, or 2: he’s also stealing from sea monsters occasionally, which would maybe help explain why he never went to try and live in the village. I wouldn’t put it past him either as he just so casually stole Luca’s shepherd stick without a second thought.
And you know he wouldn’t have cared about not giving it back cause he only gave it back after Luca was nice to him and when he knew Luca would be coming back to the surface anyway. It’s like a trade almost, “you be my (boy)friend and you can keep your stick” 😭
Like after Luca says “Good day” to him, he looks down at the stick and ROLLS HIS EYES before getting up to give it back to Luca. I know like what an inconvenience Alberto, having to give back the thing you STOLE 🙄 /lh
also he uses the stick later in Ciao Alberto, I know it’s a cute Luberto thing, but also I think Alberto just really likes that stick and is happy it’s now “his” 😭
Luca was straight up not having a good day at the beginning of the movie.
The fish got out of the barn, next he had a close call with a boat. He was late to lunch, then he got yelled at by his mother and didn’t even get to finish lunch. After that he had a “diver” with a harpoon sneak up on him, swam head-first into a rock, got cornered, had his hook momentarily stolen, and then got forced out of the water!!!
Little dude needed a breather
# poor lil guy didn’t catch a break # he did meet his boyfriend tho # so that’s a plus # but his future bf did straight up nearly keep his hook # and just after Luca gave him his harpoon back too
Judgemental!Luca appreciation post
#love when Luca is like this, it’s the best #all his expressions are so funny #our boy was FED UP with Ercole’s shit # he’s sweet but he’s also a such a (silent) hater sometimes and I LOVE IT
Alberto: who’s hurt you?
Luca: ...do you want a list?
Alberto, wielding a knife: that’d be nice, actually

Giulia: Audrey Hepburn and Mina Mazzini (but mostly Mina Mazzini) in the same flavor of those 2010s One Direction fans. Posters on the wall, all (or as many as her mother will allow) the records and tapes.
Alberto: Marcello Mastroianni. He sifts through a good amount of his discography every year. If there’s a movie with him in it, you already know he’s seen it.
Luca: None. He’s got better things to do <3

Sea monster speed
I think I’ve got a pretty good estimate of the swim speed of a sea monster from Luca
First thing I needed was some way of determining how fast they were able to go at a certain time. Thankfully Luca has fish that his family farm. While these fish themselves are not a real species, there is a very compelling substitute: The Gilt-Head Bream.
This fish is very common all throughout the Mediterranean, it eats plant material (like we see Luca’s fish do) and it lives around 0-30m deep and near seagrass beds (exactly where Luca lives) it also is quite popular to eat so that’d explain why Luca’s family farm them, and while not too important it also looks like Luca’s goat-fish
Now the problem with determining Luca’s speed is that most fish speeds are really only estimates. So finding speed references for the gilt-head bream was a pain in the ass but I found a study putting them at about 2.448km/h (the study didn’t have a massive sample so take that with a grain of salt)
That sounds slow, until you compare it to the average human, who is estimated to have a swim speed of 2.1km/h and the max speeds the best of the best can reach unassisted is about 8-10km/h
As for our sea monster max speed, I decided to compare to similarly shaped animals and the most similar in my opinion, is crocodiles.
I decided to be realistic and go with one of the slower ones, the saltwater crocodile, who has a max speed range of 24-29km/h. I also decided to lower the sea monster speed just because 1. They’re rounder so not as good at cutting through water and 2. They also don’t really need to go quite as fast since they’re not hunting.
So my estimations for a sea monster swim speed is anywhere between 2.448km/h to 20km/h.
Meaning even if he wasn’t really trying, say putting in as much effort as jogging, Luca would easily win the swimming aspect of the portorosso cup.
So after getting this comment on twitter (and me being extremely petty) I decided to look into it. It doesn’t really matter if I keep the 24-29km/h croc speed as sea monster speed after all but I did say I’d lower it to 20km/h so I’m sticking to my case.
1. This is a free fall calculator, not jumping. As we can see initial velocity (vº) is 20km/h (my estimate) and height is 2m and our result is 30km/h (like you said) that is NOT the speed they’d need to go at to get that height. This is a falling calculator, that’s the increase. That is how fast something falling constantly at 20km/h for 2m will accelerate to. Now maybe I’m wrong and/or you’re qualified, I know I’m not qualified and physics confuses me, but this seems right.
The easiest way to tell imho is to compare to something else. Luckily for us, there is an animal that likes to jump like L+A: Dolphins (for consistency, I will only be referring to bottlenose dolphins and I’ll just refer to them as dolphins)
Dolphins can jump up to 20ft (or 6m) and the fastest ever recorded vertical speed for a jump was 40km/h and they typically stay within a few meters of the water’s surface
Although that is double what I estimated for sea monsters, there is some important factors to consider:
1. The boys don’t really jump that high, their highest is about 4m MAAAAYYYBE 4.5m (I very roughly measured how high they got using Luca’s height [two sources for this, one saying 4’11, the other says 5’1 so I went with 5’0 .•. 4.5m = 15ft or 3 Lucas])
1.5 Their highest jump is one of two where they go almost directly vertically btw
2. That is the very fastest speed ever recorded, not the average, it could be an outlier.
3. Even if we took none of that into consideration, L+A should still be able to jump 3m at 20km/h if a dolphin can do 6 at 40km/h which is 1m more than OP said they would need to go at 22km/h to get
But I suspect that dolphins are not constantly going at 40km/h for their jumps. It only takes putting a dolphin at 30km/h to get the numbers necessary, giving us a speed (km/h) to height (m) ratio of 5:1
If we got this ratio, ie. got dolphins typically going at 30km/h instead of 40, it would allow L+A to reach a height of 4m at 20km/h… and what do you know
Taking off the 3km/h gives the boys an additional 20cm of height so 4.2m at 20km/h
Completely unrelated to me being petty but I also wanted to see how fast L+A would clear the Portorosso Cup swim. It looks somewhat far so let’s say a full Olympic size pool, or 50m each way
Now we need to know how fast L+A can go in m/s. 20km/h would be 5.5°m/s (° means repeating btw) that means it’d take Luca or Alberto 9.09 seconds per 50m (they have to swim back so 18.18s), considering they’re going full speed the whole time. But they’ve gotta speed up first so let’s be more realistic and get an acceleration speed
We can assume in the runaway scene that they’re going somewhat fast as Luca is running away so they’d want to be going fast + general excitement, so let’s say they’re already going 5-7.5km/h
Alberto’s first jump after the jump over the rock starts at about 3 Lucas deep or 4.5m he covers the distance in 1 second of screentime and got a jump of about 3m meaning he should be going about 15km/h by the time he reaches the water’s surface
Acceleration is in metres squared or meters per second per second. This means at 1m/s/s it takes 5 seconds to reach 5m/s. The acceleration value for going from 5km/h to 15km/h in 1 second (Alberto’s speed) is 2.778m/s/s and from 7.5km/h it is 2.08m/s/s this means it takes 1.98-2.64 seconds for them to reach 5.5m/s (or 20km/h) their max speed.
That means you’d only have to add 1.98-2.64 to that original finish time, so 18.18 + 1.98-2.64. giving us 20.16-20.82 seconds for them to finish the whole swim (a 100m swim) (btw a dolphin does it in 13.7s so it’s matching up still)
For comparison, that is HALF the time of the world record for a 100m swim (46.86s) and let’s say Giulia is considered B grade (the lowest competitive grade and the top 55% for age group competitively) as she trains quite hard for this competition. Just from one source (I’m lazy leave me alone) it would take a 13yo B grade girl 122.7 seconds to swim 100m, that is a whopping 5.9-6 times as long as it takes Luca and Alberto
