Interview: Andrew Hussie

Welcome back, dear readers. After yesterday’s disaster, we have someone very special here. Please welcome Andrew Hussie, the creator of Homestuck, and a writer and director of CON AIR 2: THE EPILOGUE. It’s so good to have you here, Andrew.

It’s my pleasure. As always.

What inspired the creation of CON AIR 2? Taking a step from a webcomic to a feature film is huge change, and decisions like that aren’t made in a day. How did the transition start?

It shouldn’t come off as a surprise that the decision to begin working on CON AIR 2 took a very long time, and it was a work of a vast network of skilled individuals. Our initial plans were very humble. They didn’t have anything to do with the Epilogue. If I recall correctly the Con Air-aspect came in after a year of development, too. The script was built over a long period of time, and almost every new member added new things into it. The idea pile didn’t stop getting taller, and soon enough we had a massive project on our hands.

It took years to formulate the script to its final form. You could say it’s creation was very Homestuck, as in, we continuously made shit up along the way. The script wasn’t finished when the filming started, and sure as hell it wasn’t finished when the filming finished. The script was almost like a living being, always being rewritten. Scenes we had already filmed took on new meanings. Parts of footage were used several times over. The movie was it’s own entity, and you’ll sure be able to see that in the theaters. It has a meta aspect, as everything in Homestuck does. At its core, CON AIR 2: THE EPILOGUE is a coming-of-age story enhanced by mystery and spectacle.

And speaking of mystery and spectacle, those were crucial to Homestuck’s narrative as well. The transition wasn’t as big of a deal in that regard. Homestuck has always been close to films, whether it has been having fun with them or making fun of them. Flash animations were a central factor in Homestuck’s path to the big screen, and ultimately transcending the boundaries of traditional media.

Alright, now that we have that out of the way, please explain. What’s the deal with Dark Cage? Why are actors going nuts left and right? It’s almost like Homestuck is becoming real. What the hell, Hussie?

It is bold of you to assume Homestuck becoming real hasn’t been my intention all along. Or perhaps it’s always been real?

Jude/Joey aspect Theory, and just a couple of other Theories

I was doing some random shit and then i had the most shocking thought The 4 Beta kids The 4 Alpha kids The 2 Hiveswap kids (and 2 Trolls) Together they make a complete aspect weel (Lets be honest this is something the creators/Hussie would do)

We obviously know the aspects of the 8 Homestuck kids And due to the extended zodiac we now know the aspects of Dammek and Xefros We are left with 2 kids: Joey and Jude, and two aspects: Doom and Mind

It would make sense that Jude is Mind-Bound, since the values logic, he over thinks things, and and he was shown as a person who is always preparing for anything and everything, just like a mind player would do. AND it would make sense that Joey is Doom-Bound, because from extended zodiac we have learnt that doom players are “fate’s chosen sufferers” (her dad doesn’t want to see her, her mom is dead, Jude isn’t the best brother, her babysitter gets drunk a lot, they have usually almost no food in the house, and just more shit that really is not good), and due to that they have “great wisdom and empathy”, and that at their best they are “wise, kind, and non-judgmental” (lets ignore that it also says “The Doom-bound won’t fix you; they aren’t healers” for now, it might not mean it literally, or maybe there are exceptions). It also makes sense, that Jude would be a Derse dreamer, and that Joey would be a Prospit dreamer due to their respective personalities.

So this way we have the 12 kids with different aspects There are 6 Prospit and 6 Derse dreamers

I guess if you really wanted to you could assign each one a different troll blood colour that would work with their character (i ain’t doing that, i’m too lazy, but in my opinion Joey would be a Jade-blood 100% due to her motherly nature)

AND THEN THE CLASSES I think they are also possible to find out We already know the classes of the 8 kids The classes that are left are: Mage, Bard, Sylph, and Thief (i always thought that Xefros might be the Page of Rage, but its impossible if this theory is correct, because Jake is the Page of Hope)

Now i don’t have that many solid evidence or proof for them, and we still dont know that well about the classes, but i feel that its fair to consider this: Joey is gonna be the Sylph of Doom, since she wants to heal animals by being a veterinarian (also she is the only girl left, and Sylph is supposedly a mainly Female class) Xefros might be the Thief of Rage, trying to steal rage from other people to calm people down, and to fuel his own personality change Dammek is the Bard of Blood, due to him apparently being an important leader type person (Tetrarch) in the rebellion. Obviously a lot of socialization had to be made, that later destroys the people he is talking to, because he destroys their trust and their bonds with other people and also Dammek destroying his own relationships for example the moirallegiance with Xefros in order to make new bonds and relationships and Jude could be the Mage of Mind, because he could use his knowledge to show Dammek the ways of earth, and also its the only Class left

Sooooo yeah thats pretty much all of my thoughts. I hope it is logical, and if it isn’t please tell me (or if someone made this theory before me which they probably have, but i just wanna see it since i haven’t a theory like this before)

I have been feeling there’s something wrong with how the Canon Aspect quiz phrased Doom. There isn’t anything explicitly incorrect with what’s written, but it does give the feeling they’ve all got martyr complexes and not much else. But your writing got me thinking in another perspective. Let’s look at the Aspect again.

Doom-aligned are supposedly deeply empathetic, but they won’t try to “fix” you. So what do they actually do? Simple. They Validate.

Doom players aren’t healers, they’re validators. They don’t heal, because in their mind, there’s nothing to fix.

“And that’s the most frustrating thing about depression. It isn’t always something you can fight back against with hope. It isn’t even something — it’s nothing. And you can’t combat nothing. You can’t fill it up. You can’t cover it. It’s just there, pulling the meaning out of everything. That being the case, all the hopeful, proactive solutions start to sound completely insane in contrast to the scope of the problem. It would be like having a bunch of dead fish, but no one around you will acknowledge that the fish are dead. Instead, they offer to help you look for the fish or try to help you figure out why they disappeared.”

I’m not sure about your classpect theory overall. I still also really like the evidence pointing Joey as a Maid of Light. But let’s assume you’re right, that she is Doom-signed. Then doesn’t the ending of Hiveswap Act 1 work perfectly? At the end, Joey rejects that Xefros is a failure, because he’s already shown he’s a good person already. She then emphasizes with him, saying that SHE TOO knows how it feels to want to blame yourself for being in a shitty situation. But then she rejects that, saying that sometimes bad things can happen to you and it’s not your fault. In short, accept bad things happen as part of life and move on. And through Doom, she could even play a healer, a Sylph.

And thus the two most negative aspects of Doom and Rage can be the Heroes of Hiveswap.

So yeah, I think I understand now how Doom can be a positive trait, despite all the negativity surrounding it.

And i thought of more evidence why Xefros might be a Thief of Rage. Its not that much, and doesn't have mean anything, but it is still a thing, so i thought i would write it down. Thief is actually a class that is, from our current knowledge, class leaning more towards the female characters. And Xefros is a boy, right? Well you know Xefros’s typing quirk? He uses an X to replace the number 10, and words/letters “ten, eks, ex, cross, and Trans”. Everyone says its like tea or weed or something weird, but what if its a double combo of both Mind Honey and Sophor Slime? My logic why this might be...

You know how some stuff are “Uppers”? That make you feel High, like coffee, cigarettes, energy drinks, or/and crack cocaine? And there is also “Downers”? Stuff that makes you feel down, like it feels good, but it tires you, like alchohol, weed, or/and Heroin? if you put the two together they somewhat cancel each other out one the whole energy aspect, but still have the high. Thats why alcohol feels so good with coffee/cigarettes. And thats why people easily overdose on Heroin laced with cocaine (and fucking die). What if its the same thing here?
