Yeah, I got that impression even as a kid, particularly with the way he reacts to her looming over him + when he manages that weak “it’s just like– like the last time–” when he’s paralyzed.

–but oh my God, my mind just put it all into chronological order: Kojiro/James ran away as a child.

 They were literally small children the last time they met (that’s why they used his “pathetic” childhood photograph for his missing poster), but she was still chasing him with that same Kusaihana/Gloom– she’s been paralyzing him and torturing him since then and his parents don’t give a damn (or rather, approve of her methods) and Gaa-chan/Growlie was the only one who interfered which is why she had him barred up this time.

… but he still has a sense of duty to his parents, so he leaves Gaa-chan to protect them and that breaks my heart.

(Look at how much Gaa-chan still aodres him. ;3;)

He may be a villain by occupation and circumstance, but he’s definitely the trio’s “pure heart”/”junjou.” ;3;

+ if anyone’s wondering why Koiiro hates formal dances and FEARS the idea of marriage, (even though he clearly –especially as of most recent episodes and characterization– loves Musashi and gets jealous/huffy when she show interest in other guys, so it’s not a commitment issue, her being his “eternal partner!” and promising to meet in the next life and all that), when most of the fandom characterizes him as loving anything girly or flashy, his upbringing is why, guys!

Personally, I think this is the reason Rocketshipping relationship doesn’t proceed to the next level. More than the eventual James’ fear to reveal his feelings for Jessie, is that she wants a marriage and a family, stability (as it was shown in XY63), something that James has still to deal with, he has still fear to officialize anything like that (it could also imply facing his own parents). In “Two Degrees of Separation!”, James proposes to live in a cottage together, someday, so it’s clear he wants a future with Jessie and Meowth, but that’s not what Jessie could truly desire. Again, in XY63 he decides to leave her living for love with that doctor, because it’s the life she desires and that he still can’t give her, due to his trauma. I think (and hope) we could have a turning point only with another episode focused on James’ past; James has feelings for Jessie clear in his mind that doesn’t want to reveal, Jessie surely has them too, but she’s not sure and anyway she’s too proud to do the first move in such things.
