The church bell tolls mask his frantic footfalls as Corey bursts into the empty building. The main door is left open behind him, wouldn’t help if it was closed. Ringing echoes off the wall before filtering out into the silent streets. He doesn’t bother to sit on the pew, kneeling right down to the floor. Hands clasped, shaking, tears streaming down from his face. Time is running out, he won’t be able to outrun Theo, he knows that.

God, he knows that. Another sob wrecks through his body. But damn it if he won’t try everything, every last ditch effort. Including praying to a higher being he’s not even sure he’d ever really believed in.

“Lord—” he starts, face lifted towards the crucified figure hanging above, “I know I have done bad things, I know… I don’t deserve this… But please, please, give me a miracle, please. I will never go back down that road again, please, please, please, one last chance, please God…” the last few words get smaller and smaller, mumbling together until they’re just a litany of ‘please’, desperate cries of a desperate man, no doubt fallen on deaf ears.
