EMBRACE YOUR ASIANNESS MY FELLOW ASIANS! Personally, I always thought it was pretty funny when someone asks me “what kind of Asian” I am. Alex Dang, thorough his poem “What Kind of Asian Are You”, shows another side to the question while taking us down the path of his family’s history so wonderfully :)
I just came across this WONDERFUL slam response to Nina Davaluri winning Miss America in 2014! For those of you who may not have heard of the large outcry that came right after this pageant, Miss Davaluri is a first generation Indian American who. It is because of her nationality that there was a large controversy as to whether or not she was “really American”. I believe this poem did a wonderful job in highlighting the stereotypes that many Indian people face, especially in cities where there is a large Indian population, and showed the hypocrisies that are presented within the country. This performance, “Miss America” is by Ramya Ramana.
BA-BAM! Joshua Nguyen hitting the double standards and unveiling them form where they are truly fostered!
Joshua Nguyen performs “ Lessons form My Father Before My Birth” At CUPSI 2015. I love how through this poem the author takes the audience through the history of how his family and many other Vietnamese families migrated here to the states and how the surname “Nguyen” cam about.
The one and only Neil Hioborn in “Joey”! The one thing that i particularly really enjoy about Neil is that he really gets involved in all his Slams, and that i definitely shown through this one :)
okay maybe this is just me but like when you’re deep inside of a good book but forced to put it down for a bit does the outside world seem weird and soft and like you find yourself thinking in the author’s voice and even after you’re done with the book there’s like this “book hangover” where you’re still in the writer’s world and seeing the characters and hearing the narrator and stuff feels… different ….

Honestly, there has got to be a way to encourage “gifted” and “advanced” students to learn, explore, and challenge themselves that doesn’t include making education a freaking competition, pitting them against themselves and each other and leaving them with serious mental problems and fear of failure.
I can see her reaching some great heights. This girl has some awesome delivery.

I think the biggest difference between writing poetry and prose for me is vulnerability. Even though my poetry style is fairly straightforward and non-elliptical, poetry favors play with language, meaning and metaphor in a way that prose can’t.
