Looking across the bay at the Valdez oil terminal. This is the terminus of the 800-mile Trans-Alaska oil pipeline, a behemoth which winds from the very top of Alaska down to the very bottom, where it is loaded onto ships for ocean transport. Denali in the Fall can be a treacherous affair. Roads normally difficult become almost impassible in the snow. Park buses equipped with chains bring tourists to their destinations, most of which are closed to normal traffic. This picture was taken in early September. By mid-September, the park roads are completely shut down.
