i listen to a lot of music and often find myself thinking about songs, so i made this blog so i'd have a place to talk about it! it's a work in progress at the moment, so please bear with me!
some of these songs are not what i would consider "good" but nonetheless hold space in my noggin.
spam liking/reblogging is no bother to me :)
i will try to tag my posts with song/artist names as well as genres so y'all won't have as hard of a time navigating the blog :3
FAQ
how do you choose the songs?
this blog is about songs that have held real estate in my head. i'll post any song that fits that criteria regardless of objective or subjective quality.
how do you decide which genre the songs are?
i just put in whatever the internet says the genre is because it's quicker and also i can blame the internet if the genre ends up being wrong.
what's your posting schedule?
idk i just put posts in the queue whenever i feel like it. the queue posts once a day but i might make it more frequent if i finalize a lot of posts at once.
can i submit a song that i'm thinking about?
it may be a possibility in the future.
why did you post the same song twice?
i don't keep good track of what songs i've already posted, so it's bound to happen.
is there a reason why you don't post for months at a time?
sometimes i lose my motivation to participate in humanity
why i think about this song: i used to listen to this song all the goddamn time in middle school. i would only listen to it on the bus to my middle school, if we're being honest. i think that was one of my attempts at an emo moment because i REALLY did not like taking the school bus. it made me late every day :(
side note: i haven't listened to any sia songs in a while because of that whole autism business she had going on, is her newer stuff any good? does she even have any newer stuff?
why i think about this song: i worked on a theater production that included a scene where a character (played by my friend) lipsynced this whole song while dancing around the set. one of the bits of choreography was them sliding down a few steps on their knees, which killed them every time. there was also air guitar involved for some reason. i had fun during that production, more than usual for that time in my life.
why i think about this song: i played this song around my mom once and she got mad at me. until she realized i actually like the song. i guess she thought i was trying to play it as a joke? i like that the song is loud as hell, it makes it easy to drown out other sounds.
why i think about this song: when the pandemic started i was taking a horror movie class. one of the on-the-fly assignments was to choose a horror movie and write a paper about it. my dad recommended Kill List (2011). this song played at the end. i do remember my jaw being practically on the floor at that point.
why i think about this song: it was recommended to me by someone after a mutual friend had died. i don't have much else to say about it. it still makes me tear up.
why i think about this song: this is one of the most uniquely diegetic songs i've heard yet. this plays in Control (2019) and is credited to "Old Gods of Asgard", which is actually just the game's in universe version of the real life band Poets of the Fall. i fear i'm not tapped in enough to the Alan Wake universe to say if they're supposed to be the same or if they're just the guys that portray the band. if anyone knows anything please tell me because it's killing me.
why i think about this song: for the longest time i only knew the first minute of the song. i didn't realize there was an extended spoken word segment of the vocalist begging his mom to not beat him. they kept that part in when they put it in the fortnite guitar hero mode. the spoken word section really harshes my vibe when i listen to it. i know it's entirely disregarding their artistic vision but do you think they'd ever release a version without that?
sidebar: this was in the soundtrack for Queen of The Damned, which boasts the most insane goddamn motion picture soundtrack by virtue of having the score produced by Korn's Jonathan Davis and Oingo Boingo's Richard Gibbs. I miss Aaliyah.
why i think about this song: i know i've said that prog metal/prog rock isn't really my thing but dream theater is my exception. i have a distinct memory of listening to this song on a road trip and melodramatically staring out the window with my hand resting on the glass. i think i was being emo because i didn't want to be on the road trip in the first place. i really knew how to pick my mental battles.
why i think about this song: i first listened to this song around the time i had first become aware i was being cyberstalked. the lyrics of the song itself have nothing to do with being cyberstalked but the vocalist's quick and strained way of singing along with the synths made me feel like i was being chased by someone trying to throw a cinderblock at me. i enjoy the song a little more now that i'm not being cyberstalked.
why i think about this song: i like how this song sounds. the guitar is especially a high point for me. the lyrics feel to me like the equivalent of crushing an egg with your bare hands and walking around all day with eggshell under your fingernails and dry egg yolk encrusted into the lines of your palm.
why i think about this song: i like that it's loud. the singer kind of sounds like the frontman for IDLES. repetitive lyrics have their place in my musical ecosystem and it is here.
why i think about this song: it's because of the gerard way feature. otherwise i think this song is just okay. progressive metal hasn't been very high in my listening priority for a few years now — part of me feels it's because that's the only genre i'd play on guitar hero. if anyone has any suggestions on what i should play on guitar hero you can share them. i guess
why i think about this song: do you not hear how it immediately starts with that gritty bass? imagine you are silent hill 2 protagonist james sunderland in silent hill and you hear this. you would be stuck between trying to not die or deciding which guilt monster to crowdkill. FUCK!!!!!!!!
why i think about this song: gojira spends 2 1/2 minutes doing the same riff before they start the damn song. and they somehow made it work (at least to me). i was first introduced to this song by a twitch streamer playing guitar hero (or was it someone in his chat?) and am always thankful he did. this song has become the one that i use to threaten the integrity of my eardrums when i'm upset. you should try it!
why i think about this song: meg was going through the worst news cycle known to man when she dropped this one, and you can tell she was pissed. i usually write these posts while listening to the song and i'm having trouble coming up with more to write because i'm so locked in on her flow, so i apologize that this post doesn't have more depth to it.
