Art director Marc Ascoli asked Nick Knight to handle the photography  for japanese designer Yohji Yamamoto’s lookbook and advertising campaign in 1986. Knight involved graphic designer Peter Saville (1955), known for producing album sleeves for Joy Division and New Order. The trio created a series of -what would go down in fashion history as groundbreaking- images. Their Yamamoto lookbooks have since become collector’s items. The innovative photos by Ascoli, Knight and Saville for Yohji Yamamoto -Susie Bick slumped on a chair with cigarette between her fingers- have a tremendous impact to this day, and have been instrumental in developing Yamamoto brand’s visual identity.

Originally commissioned by Yohji Yamamoto for his Autumn/Winter 1987/8 collection advertisements but has since been printed up at a large scale to be seen in a gallery context. Knight used flash light to freeze the silhouette. In addition, tungsten light and a long exposure time to produce the blurring red color within the shape.
