Mick Jagger, Manchester 1973, by Fin Costello
On this day in music history: August 14, 1965 - âI Got You Babeâ by Sonny & Cher hits #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for 3 weeks, also peaking at #19 on the R&B singles chart on the same date. Written and produced by Sonny Bono, it is the biggest hit for the pop vocal duo from Los Angeles, CA. Previously known as Caesar & Cleo, Salvatore âSonnyâ Bono and Cherilyn Sarsikian LaPierre (aka Cher) meet each other in a Hollywood, CA coffee shop, while Bono is working for producer Phil Spector as a record promotion and odd jobs man. Cher is only 16 years old at the time when they meet (though she tells him sheâs 18, and heâs 27 at the time), and has aspirations to become a singer. The two become fast friends (later becoming romantically involved and moving in together), and Bono helps her get work with Spector, singing background vocals and recording a one off single (âI Love You, Ringoâ under the name âBonnie Jo Masonâ). When the duo first records as Caesar & Cleo in 1964, they record and release a few singles for Vault then Reprise Records (the latter two their first as Sonny & Cher), including âBaby Donât Goâ, which to make any impact. The inspiration for âI Got You Babeâ come to Sonny while sitting at the piano one evening in the coupleâs home in Lauren Canyon. After recording âBabeâ and itâs B-side âItâs Gonna Rainâ (with members of The Wrecking Crew at Gold Star Studios in Hollywood, CA), Sonny Bono sends them to Atlantic Records chairman Ahmet Ertegun, who actually prefers the flipside. Bono takes a copy of the single to KHJ in Los Angeles who begins playing âBabeâ hourly as an exclusive. The response to âBabeâ is swift and overwhelmingly positive, convincing Atlantic to regulate it to the A-side of the single. Entering the Hot 100 at #88 on July 10, 1965, it rockets to the top of the chart just five weeks later. In a bit of irony, their earlier single, âBaby Donât Goâ is reissued by Reprise as âBabeâ is still climbing the chart, becoming a hit in its own right. It enters the Hot 100 on August 21, 1965 while âI Got You Babe is still holding the top spot, and peaks at #8 seven weeks later on October 9, 1965. "Babeâ is covered by UB40 and Chrissie Hynde in 1985, hitting number one on the UK singles chart. âI Got You Babeâ is certified Gold in the US by the RIAA.

music biopics iâd love to see
1. Janis Joplin
âWhen I sing, I feel like when youâre first in love. Itâs more than sex. Itâs that point two people can get to they call love, when you really touch someone for the first time, but itâs gigantic, multiplied by the whole audience.â
2. Billie Joel
âAs human beings, we need to know that we are not alone, that we are not crazy or completely out of our minds, that there are other people out there who feel as we do, live as we do, love as we do, who are like us.â
3. Aretha Franklin
âBeing the Queen is not all about singing, and being a diva is not all about singing. It has much to do with your service to people. And your social contributions to your community and your civic contributions as well.â
4. Amy Winehouse
âMy justification is that most people my age spend a lot of time thinking about what theyâre going to do for the next five or ten years. The time they spend thinking about their life, I just spend drinking.â
5. Bob Marley
âThe devil ainât got no power over me. The devil come, and me shake hands with the devil. Devil have his part to play. Devilâs a good friend, too⊠because when you donât know him, thatâs the time he can mosh you down.â
