2 New Works ! Entitled: Content Aware / Body Aware
Experimenting more with the photoshop content aware tool and ideas about the body.
I was prompted to pick this idea back up after receiving a call for the Festival of the Body show at OCAD U. They asked for student work that shows our interpretations of the body.
The most exciting experiments I’ve worked on about the body involve pushing the connection between the physical and digital. Our physical bodies engage in these two worlds all the time and in different ways. One way is through digital photography: our bodies are sort of digitized and turned into code and algorithms when our image is captured digitally.
I wanted to expand on this idea by digitally manipulating photographs of the female form. I place them in a recognizably digital gradient background, and I cut away at their bodies with the photoshop selection tool. Then I run them through repeated processes of the “content aware” algorithm which takes the surrounding pixels of the part of the image that is selected, and fills the selection with what the program thinks should go there. After doing this repeatedly the image breaks down more and more because it is taking away more of the actual information that is in the photo and replacing it with what it thinks the photo should be.
The visual results of this process are fascinating to me because they almost look like they belong on the body- but the image is not right.
