my best friend in the whole entire world
Does Sanya Kazarina PAFL approve of Flowery Deltarune
(bravely) i don't care about deltarune
is creating art your full time job, or do you do other work alongside art? You seem to have a lot of projects
It's my full time job!
Why does yura have the vadim ear thing now? Is it just a tweak you made to his design now for fun or does something happen?
Not long after the Mill released I've been informed that a bullet graze like that would also scrape his ear. I've actually been drawing him with a slightly damaged ear since 100 Epitaphs, although it's pretty inconsistent there and hard to see.
Now that the comic allows for more detail I've made it a bit more prominent!
Sorry the examples look kinda nutty
I actually have a tiny piece of my ear missing in the same spot, so Yura and Vadim are basically my self inserts. Quite horrid!
hurting him painfully!!
what happened to my zato man
zato if it was AWESOME...
something's wrong with my copy of mirabelki
been really interested in tosya after finishing zato... any fun information you can provide about them?
Nope. Sorry!!
are there any plans for (or would you consider) paid physical merch for zato outside of the prints?
i enjoyed zato and especially asya's characterization more than i could've imagined! happy to say she's become one of my favorite characters in fiction
can't speak for everyone, but i would definitely order a plush of asya in a heartbeat & can think of a few others who would likely do the same. zato hivemind or something. i was curious to see what your thoughts are on the matter, given the success of the sanya plush and zato's very positive reception
anyways, thank you for creating such a wonderful game! i'm excited to dig deeper into pafl now that i've found some free time
Thank you sm, I hope you'll enjoy PAFL as well!:) I'm definitely down to make an Asya plush, I think it could be quite bimbly... I'd like to try and launch one in late autumn-christmas time!
the whole point of ZATO is that vorkuta-5 is a GUARDED small town based on just how the soviet government IS which is WHY the world feels so small and yet so big at the same time.
if theres anything the regime is good for, its being used artistically to create that sentiment.
my own country (romania) has suffered communist dictatorship due to it being a satellite in relation to the USSR and i never once thought ZATO was trying to glorify the regime or anything. especially since you yourself would be in a similar boat with your own nationality.
anyway, i honestly wrote pages upon pages of a review on ZATO that i was meant to post publicly, but i got too shy and worried i might look like a crazy fanatic… but i truly love this game A Lot. ive been a fan of your work since ~2021 and im glad that, not only were you able to make and release this game, but also that it drew in a whole lot of new fans! your art has greatly inspired my own (both in terms of art style and themes depicted) and ZATO is no exception. its encouraging to see another eastern european artist fearlessly portraying the commie or post-commie society, when i kinda grew up with the idea that it was something embarrassing to keep hidden about myself and the world i grew up in…
but anyway, i genuinely have no complaints about the game. it is a very thought-provoking and humanist narrative that i appreciate to no end. every character was written fantastically (yes including vadim even though i hate his guts), the environment was always set up nicely, and the ending can bring shivers down your spine. actually, even the first scene (past the intro) can do it too! when asya describes the universe in such a way that she seems afflicted by the overview effect, except nobody here is an astronaut. but now we have the tech available to see the earth from outside, so we still experience it. and this overview effect is something that kinda just never goes away…
i really believe theres Something to love about the game for any and everyone that plays it, regardless of if theyre already into visual novels or not.
(also, potentially stupid question, was asya written with undiagnosed autism in mind? thats the vibe i got from her while playing, though maybe i was projecting myself onto her because i already see myself in her a scary amount…)
Thank you so much!! It really means a lot to hear this from someone coming from a country that was similarly affected.
I totally get that feeling of embarrassment, even back in 2019 just giving my characters non-western names somehow felt weird and cringy:') Funny how different the culture climate is nowadays, since the whole "post-soviet depression aesthetic😍" has blown up a lot in the past few years and you see tons of slavaboos online... I have very mixed feelings on that, though.
I really hope you feel proud of your culture and don't feel discouraged from creating art that comes from your lived experiences! It's a really liberating feeling.
Regarding Asya, I do not write characters with any specific conditions in mind. I just imagine a type of person that's interesting to follow... There's been a lot of different headcannons about her, and it's cool to see how people find her relatable in all sorts of ways!
In your older posts on Tumblr, you would repost a lot of fanwork. What happened with that?
I used to repost almost every fanart I saw before and comment on it, and it wasn't hard to do because I didn't have a ton of reach! But eventually there was so much stuff, it became difficult to give everyone equal attention. Picking and choosing felt really bad, too - everyone put effort into their work, but it probably made people sad when I reposted/commented on someone else's art and missed theirs.
I still look at fanart and I'm flattered how much amazing stuff people make every day!! Sadly it's just very time consuming to try and give everyone the appreciation they deserve... So I might do a reblog spree once a year or so, but it's not something I could pull off on the regular. Regardless, I'm very thankful for all the beautiful work - it's really so much more than I could ever imagine!
Slightly odd question but I was recently looking for a name for an oc and was looking through name websites and stuff. All though I did find a name for this oc I suddenly thought "I wanna know what Temnova means".
I was wondering if it was a name you made by combining two or more other sir names or if its just one of those names you(general) kinda make up on the spot and it sticks cause I couldn't find it on any of the name data banks I like to use. Or its a real last name that's rare/uncommon.
I wanna know were its from because its a very unique last name and it intrigues me :>
I won't lie I didn't think hard about it at all she's quite literally Darkness Dementia Ravenway. As in straight up her name is Dr Dark
Dawg...I'm playing through ZATO rn and jesus christ this shit is beautiful. Like not just "nice" but also POLISHED!!!
I'm early in so no deep philosophical questions for now, but I was wondering; What's your thinking on whether or not you distribute a project you worked on for free VS charging for it? I'm of many minds about the topic tend to want to know how other creators feel about it. Cause I get caught off guard every time I remember that THIS GLORIOUS VN is free (somehow??? Like jesus gang woah!) Respect to you as a creator.
Thank you so much, I'm happy you're having a good time with it:D Hope you enjoy the rest of the playthrough!!
I want my work to be accessible to as many people as possible, so I try to release as much stuff as I can for free. If a person enjoys it enough to want to support me or get some extra materials, that's awesome! If they like it but don't have the resources to do so, they might still spread the word, and that works just as well. And if they hate it, well, it's not like it cost them any money, so it's hard to be too angry at me as an author, haha.
Of course, not everyone can afford to do that - I'm very lucky to have an audience this generous and patient. Still, I believe that making your stuff widely accessible is really important these days! There are plenty of kind people out there who'd be happy to support an artist they believe in, but your work needs to reach them first.
smoke break?
just a little bit weird question, but does it also irritate you a little bit when people pronounce it zAto and not zatO? I tried watching video essay 'bout Z.A.T.O. lately(btw congrats with such success) and it was like some personal linguistic hell, never thought one emphasis would do such things to me
I pronounce it as zAto
How does the success of ZATO make you feel?while PAFL is nothing to scoff at, ILTWAEII has garnered such a large and devout fanbase almost entirely separate from anything you’ve made prior and in such a short timeframe that I do wonder what that’s like from the authors perspective. To have a side project get to “it has video essays now!” level almost overnight, compared to PAFL which has brewed for years a loyal, if reserved, community.
I'm not surprised it got more popular at all! It's a short self-contained story with a very low barrier of entry, I'd be shocked if it did worse than a vocaloid song series that requires you to read a fat google doc to understand.
I'm not really used to this level of attention though, haha. It's crazy how much ZATO stuff I see out in the wild... I'm really happy it resonated with so many people!
But I've been very content with the size of my audience way before the game's release, so whether PAFL gains extra motion or not as a result of this doesn't matter too much. If someone discovers it and enjoys it thanks to ZATO, that's great! If not, that's fine too. I feel like having a small but dedicated community is a very comfortable place for an artist to be!
