Back in January some users of the Fitbit Force wristband started to notice rashes on their wrists due to the band’s design, with some startling images of what some doctors called “contact dermatitis”, as seen over at Consumerist (image shown below post).
Today, Fitbit has issued a voluntary recall of its Fitbit Force due to a “small percentage” of users succumbing to rashes:
We wanted to provide an update on our investigation into reports we have received about Force users experiencing skin irritation.
From the beginning, we’ve taken this matter very seriously. We hired independent labs and medical experts to conduct a thorough investigation, and have now learned enough to take further action. The materials used in Force are commonly found in many consumer products, and affected users are likely experiencing an allergic reaction to these materials.
While only a small percentage of Force users have reported any issue, we care about every one of our customers. We have stopped selling Force and are in the process of conducting a voluntary recall, out of an abundance of caution. We are also offering a refund directly to consumers for full retail price. We want to thank each and every member of the Fitbit community for their continued loyalty and support. We are working on our next-generation tracker and will announce news about it soon.
The Fitbit Force hit Canadian retail outlets last November.
If you have a Fitbit Force and it’s causing you to have a rash, you can fill out this form and get a refund. Are you having issues with your Fitbit Force?

As we continue to wait for iOS 7.1 to be released to the public, Apple has seeded iOS 7.0.6 to the public this morning. The release comes a month after iOS 7.0.5 landed at the end of January, which also featured bug fixes for certain newer models of iPhones.
It also looks like Apple has released a similar bug fix for iOS 6 users in iOS 6.1.6 Both updates are available either over the air, by visiting Settings > General > Software Update, or by plugging your device in iTunes.
From the surface, it looks like iOS 7.0.6, which carries a build number of 11b651, just contains a fix for SSL connection verification. It is for all devices. And as for iOS 6.1.6, it carries a build number of 10b500, and is just for the iPhone 3GS and iPod touch 4G.
We currently aren’t sure whether or not these updates are safe for jailbreakers, so it’s best to stay away from them until we get confirmation that they’re ok. We typically get word from the evad3rs or other prominent jailbreak figures within 24 hours of updates.
If you do happen upgrade to one of these firmwares, let us know if you notice anything new or improved by emailing [email protected], or making a comment down below. We can also be found on Twitter. We’ll let you know if we discover anything new.

Samsung Unpacked 5 event at the Mobile World Congress is just a few days away. If you don’t know, Samsung scheduled a press event on February 24th which will start at 20:00 CET (GMT+1).
Recently, Samsung posted a teaser video for their Unpacked event, and gave us a pretty good hint about what we could expect from the Korean OEM. The 36-second videos highlights some of the things we might see in the upcoming Galaxy device, including curiosity, peace, fun, speed, victory, connect, create, social, outdoor, and wet. If you can’t recall, it resembles to the teaser Samsung posted a few days back.
Another thing worth noting here is that every trait like victory, speed, etc has “5″ attached to it, and you should have a pretty good idea of what that means. This video should remove any doubts people may have about the existence of the Samsung Galaxy S5, which might make it’s first official appearance at the Samsung Unpacked event next week. Here’s the video for your viewing pleasure.
Let me just do a quick recall, Samsung Galaxy S5 is expected to come with a 5.2-inch display (with either QHD or FHD resolution), Snapdragon 805 or Exynos 6 chipset for the LTE/3G version, 3GB of RAM, 32GB internal storage, 16MP camera, redesigned Samsung apps, fingerprint sensor, water-resistant and should come with Android 4.4.2 KitKat pre-installed out of the box with a revamped TouchWiz UI.
Stay tuned as we’ll update you with all the latest happenings from the Samsung event on Monday.

Facebook may have just spent the equivalent GDP of a small European country buying a smartphone app, but Google wants users to create 3D game environments by waving a phone around a living room. In other words, the moonshot is alive and well.
Project Tango, from the Advanced Technology And Products group (ATAP) that Google kept when it sold Motorola to Lenovo, is a prototype Android-powered smartphone that is able to track space in real time. It does this using three cameras, including one specific to motion-tracking and another dedicated to depth perception, and two vision processors from a company called Movidius.
“Our current prototype is a 5” phone containing customized hardware and software designed to track the full 3D motion of the device, while simultaneously creating a map of the environment. These sensors allow the phone to make over a quarter million 3D measurements every second, updating it’s position and orientation in real-time, combining that data into a single 3D model of the space around you.”
The benefit to consumers and developers would be to theoretically recreate real environments virtually using a single small device. This could help in myriad ways, from cartography to gaming to augmented reality. “We are physical beings that live in a 3D world, yet mobile devices today assume that the physical world ends at the boundaries of the screen,” says ATAP’s Johnny Lee.
While the device itself is by no means ready for mass market, Google has made available 200 prototype dev kits to “create more than a touchscreen app.” They want developers to use the phone’s sensors and custom processors to “sense 3D motion and geometry, [to] push the technology forward and build great user experiences on top of this platform.” The implications of Tango also extend to the visually impaired, who could use a specialized version of the software to more accurate map out living spaces and determine the correct route around indoor locations, like malls and stadiums, that have yet to be accurately mapped.
Tango is from the same team behind Ara, the prototype modular smartphone platform that Motorola introduced last year. Since then, Google has made huge inroads into robotics, purchasing a number of high-level companies like Boston Dynamics, and shifting big-name personnel like Android founder Andy Rubin into head of robotics. It will be interesting to see whether Google uses the real-time processing from these camera/chip combinations in their robotics endeavours going forward. It would make it much easier for these machines to “see,” as the data would be made available to them in real-time.

Wow. Facebook has filed a document with the SEC confirming that the company has purchased the popular messaging client WhatsApp for $16 billion in cash and stock. According to the filing, Whatsapp currently has 450 million people currently using the service each month, with 70% of those active each day. Here’s what the respective CEOs had to say about the purchase:
“WhatsApp is on a path to connect 1 billion people. The services that reach that milestone are all incredibly valuable,” said Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook founder and CEO. “I’ve known Jan for a long time and I’m excited to partner with him and his team to make the world more open and connected.”
Jan Koum, WhatsApp co-founder and CEO, said, “WhatsApp’s extremely high user engagement and rapid growth are driven by the simple, powerful and instantaneous messaging capabilities we provide. We’re excited and honored to partner with Mark and Facebook as we continue to bring our product to more people around the world.”
The acquisition will be provide WhatsApp $4 billion in cash and approximately $12 billion worth of Facebook shares. The agreement also provides for an additional $3 billion in restricted stock units to be granted to WhatsApp’s founders and employees that will vest over four years subsequent to closing. Obviously, we’ll have more as this story develops, but it’s clear that Facebook is willing to spend whatever sum is necessary to protect its user base from fleeing to emerging communication services.
WhatsApp is currently available on iPhone, Android, BlackBerry, Nokia S40, Nokia Symbian and Windows Phone.

With all the hype and talk right now surrounding the upcoming reveal of the Samsung Galaxy S5, more leaks have brewed up online of the supposed upcoming new HTC handset curtsey of Twitter account @evaleaks. With almost a month away, the march 25th date cannot get here anytime soon enough.
With the upcoming and All Brand New HTC, as the company is rumoured to suppose to name there upcoming handset, now this time being shown in a gold colour configuration. Also from the photo you can see that the picture shows off the handset containing dual camera lenses on the back, also with dual two tone LED flash. So what is up with the dual cameras? Maybe the new HTC One is going have the ability to take 3D photos and videos? Who knows.
If that is the case and the handset dose support dual rear cameras, it would help make it stand out from the other Android handsets on the market. If the cameras are powerful then it could stack up to the Nokia Lumia 1020, a Windows phone that packs a crazy 41-megapixel camera.
You can also see that the home screen resembles a lot like the Windows phone UI, stepping away form the traditional Android experience. With it featuring live app boxes that the company calls HTC Sense.
For now, we are not 100% sure on what the handset will look like and also feature. With @evaleaks, they have provided lots of supposes images and rumours of new gadgets and smartphone for all of us to ponder on. But as usual, we all just have to wait on that date when HTC will reveal there new handset.

Samsung outlined which devices are getting upgraded to KitKat today, and things are looking good for much of the Canadian market.
While it’s already known that the Galaxy S4 and Galaxy Note 3, the company’s two current flagships, will be receiving Android 4.4.2, the company confirmed that almost every product powerful enough to run the software — including devices still running Android 4.1 like the Note 8.0 — will be upgraded.
The full list is below, and of course they are subject to carrier approval.
Galaxy Note 3
Galaxy Note II
Galaxy S4
Galaxy S4 mini
Galaxy S III
Galaxy S III mini
Galaxy Mega
Galaxy Note 8.0
Galaxy Tab 3
Galaxy Note 10.1
Galaxy Note 10.1 2014 Edition
The list itself is US-centric, but the devices sold in Canada have heretofore been identical to their American counterparts. The company’s newest products, the Galaxy TabPRO and NotePRO series, which are currently up for pre-order in Canada, are shipping with Android 4.4.2 KitKat, and while the advantages over Jelly Bean are limited, we’ve noticed a number of trims and tucks, as well as performance enhancements, to justify the excitement for the above list.

Samsung is poised to make several device announcements at Mobile World Congress next week, one of which is to be the flagship Galaxy S5. The official keynote is happening on February 24th and it’ll be streamed live.
A Samsung exec recently indicated that the GS5 will launch “by April” and will be more “about the display and the feel of the cover.” One of the more heavily rumoured inclusions to the GS5 is a fingerprint sensor for authentication and the ability to perform various tasks. The addition of the fingerprint sensor is one that follows Apple and HTC and new details of this possibly will operate has surfaced online by sources over at SamMobile.
A recent patent filing by Samsung showed a buttonless smartphone with a fingerprint sensor on the back of the device, but these new details axe that idea and reveal that Samsung will launch the GS5 with a physical home button and include the sensor within it. Samsung’s fingerprint sensor is said to operate in a swipe manner that requires the user to completely swipe their finger over the home button “at a moderate speed.” If they are moving to fast or slow the user will be met with an error message.
Going beyond the unlocking of the device, Samsung is reportedly offering up users the opportunity to “register a total of 8 fingerprints and assign each fingerprint a different task or use it as an app shortcut… A new Personal Folder and Private Mode has been developed by Samsung, where you will be able to hide personal apps, widgets, and content you want to keep private.”
SamMobile also notes in their report that the sensor is sensitive to moisture and your finger must be dry to activate it, plus that the progress of each scan will show up on the display in real-time.
Rumoured specs of the GS5 have it coming with a 5.25-inch Quad HD Super AMOLED (2560×1440 pixels) display, a 16MP camera, 3GB of RAM, plastic and metal versions, running KitKat and a new TouchWIZ UI.
