I’ve always found it ironic how despite being the unofficial mascot level of SA1 - to the point where it was used to represent the game in Generations - Speed Highway is basically a filler level in Sonic’s story.

Compared to collecting Chaos Emeralds (Windy Valley, Casinopolis, Ice Cap), rescuing Tails (Emerald Coast), finding Eggman (Sky Deck, Final Egg), catching up with the Egg Carrier (Red Mountain), and following Tikal (Lost World), Sonic’s objective in Speed Highway is to find Amy… which was what he was already trying to do in Twinkle Park. So you could cut out Speed Highway from his story, go straight from “AWW SHOOT I LOST AMY (*awkward animation*)” to Zero nabbing Amy faster than Penders nabbing opportunities to be a dumbass, and nothing would be lost.

Not saying they should have done that, since I love Speed Highway as much as the next guy. Just something that amuses me is all. At least the game did a good job at giving most of its levels a narrative purpose, compared to ‘06 having Sonic go through Wave Ocean to achieve nothing, then have Tails do the same later on to achieve even less.
