Nick mustered a half-smile and a grunt as he followed Sonny into his home. The mansion was gorgeous and immaculate; Nick couldn’t help but feel as though he was making it dirty just by standing in the foyer, his face darkened by hungover eyes and three-day stubble. He stared down at the ground as he walked, as though too ashamed to make eye contact with all the evidence of Sonny’s success.

It might have been more polite to pretend to be happy, to smile and make small talk with his potential employer, but Nick couldn’t find it in him. If he was being entirely honest, the fact that he hadn’t given up and eaten a bullet already showed remarkable restraint on his part. Not that he’d ever win any medals for that, but still.

“So,” Nick said wearily, eyes still downcast as they reached Sonny’s office. “I guess you’re serious about all this for some reason. What did you have in mind?”

      “I need a bodyguard, you need a job. There’s not much else to it. You’re trustworthy. Smart. Big and strong. That’s all I really need.” He shut the door behind them, taking a seat at his desk. The office itself was a lot to take in; shelves were full of every knick knack imaginable, furniture all a bright color but none of it the same bright color. 

      “You’re welcome to live here- I cleared it with the wife. Future wife, technically; Semantics. Unless you’d prefer not to. I could definitely use you on call 24/7, though. Here-” He grabbed a crumpled up piece of paper out of one of the many piles on the desk, scribbling a six digit number on it in purple gel pen and sliding it across the desk to Nick. “is what I was paying the last guy. Annual.”

      “It comes out to, like, a thousand a day. Of course, if you’re willing to be in charge of the rest of my security team, we can talk about a raise. It’s just a handful of guys right now, but… I’m sure I’ll need more, soon enough.” He gave Nick a big smile, batting his lashes as though being adorable would sway Nick quicker than the money would. 

      “How’s it sound? You think you can handle it?”

She groaned, trying to reason with him was like trying to reason with pastel vomit. There was no way of convincing him this much she knew, but she was going to protest as much as she could. Especially given his…tastes, if one could call them such.

      “You stick out like a sore thumb! I want you, but I want you to blend in. I mean, shit, with the way you dress you might as well wear a t-shirt that says ‘I’m the bodyguard. Shoot me first.’”

      He rolled his eyes. Why was she always so stubborn? “Come on. It’s just some sequins.”
