This short feature, released on the West Virginia Public Broadcasting YouTube channel earlier this year, features my voice as the narration. I recorded this for the video department, which is something I always enjoy doing!
Camera Work - West Virginia Music Hall of Fame 2025 Induction
In the time since I started working for West Virginia Public Broadcasting in March of 2024, I have gotten to do some exciting things. This night, in which I got to work on the camera crew for the 2025 West Virginia Music Hall of Fame, is probably the most exciting night I have ever worked. All of the robo-cam shots in this recording were framed by yours truly.
I had the privilege of getting to speak to Daniel Johnston's sister after the show, and our brief, but heartfelt conversation left a considerable mark on me. Johnston's music was a big hit at my college radio station, and hearing her speak on his legacy in person was really. cool.
Other big names appear here, including Jeff Tweedy of Wilco, whose Mountain Stage performance the following night I would also work. Luke Brian made a surprise appearance, and even more notable names were honored across the evening.
Truly a rewarding experience.

U92 Interviews Machine Girl (2022) | The Most Fun Thing I Got To Do For Student Radio
In February of 2022, I got to accompany WVU's student radio station to Spirit Hall in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, where we got to record a video interview with Electronic Duo Machine Girl, who spent some time in Pittsburgh themselves.

Design Commission - Philosophy Talk Flyers For Dr. David Hoinski
Dr. David Hoinski, teaching associate professor in the Philosophy department here at WVU, recently commissioned some flyer designs from me for two events that the department was hosting.
I am very thankful to Dr. Hoinski for the opportunity to design these flyers, I don't get to do much graphic design anymore so these were a fun way for me to flex my design muscles.
The most recent event was "War and Forgiveness: Possible Futures" with Dr. Viktoras Bachmetjevas, PHD. Dr. Bachemetjevas is a research scholar in the Baltic Studies Program at the Yale MacMillian Center
The other event was "Existential Therapy: Intersections of Philosophy & Clinical Psychology" with Dr. Xavier Bonilla, host of Converging Dialogues podcast.
Class Assignment - Grimes GIF, 2021
For this assignment for Design For Multimedia, the only instruction we received was “make a gif.” It was allowed to be of anything using any method of animation. I chose to create this rotoscoped neon animation from the Oblivion music video.
I have very complicated feelings about Grimes that we do not need to get into here, but Visions is probably my favorite album of all time. Each time I listen to it, all these ideas for illustrations or scenes from movies that don’t exist yet flood my mind. This was an attempt to translate at least some of those feelings into something visual.
Though this took me an insane amount of hours slaving away on my Wacom, it was fun for me. I miss being in art classes.

Design Commission - Mountaineers for Bernie Pin, 2019
Way back when, in my Freshman year of 2019, I volunteered for the Bernie Sanders 2020 campaign through the WVU Mountaineers for Bernie club. I was in charge of graphic design, and was charged with making a pin, pictured below.

For this assignment, we were tasked with making six unique animated gifs resembling video game achievement badges revolving around a central theme. The theme I selected was Chakras.

On last Valentine’s day, I had the opportunity to sit down in the WVU U92 student radio booth with Mary Roush, the 2022-2023 WVU mascot. Like me, Mary is a West Virginian born student of WVU, the largest college in the state. The Mountaineer is both the school’s mascot, but to a certain extent, the state’s as well, so it was a thrilling opportunity to sit down with her and discuss both the symbol and the significance it holds in the state.

This February, Dr. Sharon Ryan- head of the WVU philosophy department- enlisted my help to make a flyer for a public lecture event the department was putting on with Dr. Daniel C. Dennett.

About me
My name is Sophie Annalise Northup and I am a WVU class of December 2023 Graduate in the Bachelor of Arts Philosophy program. In May, I was one of three of winners of the department's first annual in house conference essay award since 2020. I am immensely grateful for the experiences and connections my time in the WVU Philosophy department provided me with. I can say the same of the WVU center for Women & Gender Studies, whom I minored with, where I had the wonderful experience of being a TA.
But that's not all I do! Throughout my undergraduate I also was heavily involved in the Reed College of Media. I graduated with a minor in journalism, which I have been passionate about since I was a teenager. I entered college as an Interactive Design for Media student, and while I would eventually go on to shift my focus as college went on, the two years I spent in this program taught me skills I will use for the rest of my career, including multimedia art and graphic design, photography and post processing, and basic knowledge of coding and UX design.
Aside from my academic involvement in the Reed College, I also spent two years working for WWVUFM Morgantown U92 The Moose, WVU's own student radio station. My time in student media is an experience I would not trade for the world. From getting to attend concerts and help with artist interviews, to running my own weekly radio shows, even to learning about FCC rules and radio equipment, I loved every single second of it.
I love media, I love news, I love art, and I love learning as much as I can. This site is for me to post a little bit of everything of what I do.
