Countries in Central America are being denied their access to water by large companies. They are being taken advantage of and are given empty promises in return for their cooperation.

Unfair Deals

Upon willing to cooperate with large companies, these companies promise to create jobs for the community and concrete roads that make it safer to get around the community. Once the companies accomplished what they were there for, they never hold up their end of the deal and leave the community member in the clouds wondering when they’re going to receive what they were promised.

Hydro Electric Firm, Honduran Military Planned Berta Caceres Murder

"DESA high-level directors, state agents and criminal elements” formed a criminal network to “assassinate Berta Caceres," said a lawyer with GAIPE.

Berta Caceres was a woman who fought for those who could not speak for themselves. She spoke up for the Indigenous and Honduran communities being deprived of natural resources.

Deprivation of Natural Resources

This in-turn takes away the citizens right to clean and free water and it diminishes access to water to those who can’t afford it. Of the entire Honduran population, 15.1% are in poverty which unfortunately limits their access to water because of its high cost.

Honduras has been suffering from a water shortage since the 1980’s according to Problems Faced by a National Water Utility in an Urban Area. Companies that have moved into Honduras or were created in Honduras have taken over the community members access to water. Instead of having free water, companies want to sell water to member of the community.

Many communities have been deceived into thinking that as a result of this they will receive more jobs and more paved roads. When it comes down to it these big corporations take advantage of the community members willingness to share their river and leave them with nothing. With complete disregard for the lives of those in the community, they leave them with barley any water resulting in the dehydration of many, especially children.

Large companies have been coming into Honduras and cutting off the local communities’ water supply for their own benefit. They cut off the publics access to their local rivers claiming that it benefits the community when in reality it’s only benefiting the corporation.

One country mainly affected by the privatization of rivers is the Country of Honduras. Honduras is a country flourishing with many natural resources making it a target for big corporations.

Before we talk about the privatization of rivers, it’s important to understand what it means. By privatizing rivers, this reduces the surrounding communities access to fresh water. Large corporations come into these communities and build hydroelectric dams that stop river flow down.
