lightsaber space queen ✨ from this year's star wars day :)
im watching star wars again and i didnt post this version yet, so: dark side :)
finished this in time to post it before mermay ends 🐟
the new galaxy 2 storybook chapter is sweet and does not attempt to retcon galaxy's or rosalina's lore, and i am both relieved and happy
limited palette challenge from twitter, from a while ago. super happy with this one :)

at least they did fairly well with her actual characterization overall. she got a good few minutes in the very beginning, and her personality was generally intact. just so bummed about their plot decisions, bc again i would have been so happy with this movie if theyd just done her role properly
[for filtering purposes: mario galaxy movie spoilers]
here's a shot at fixing the plot of the super mario galaxy movie. spoilers, of course.
as established, i am very disappointed and annoyed with how they handled rosalina in this movie. here's an idea on how it could have been done better.
step 1: actually utilize the plot of super mario galaxy.
legitimately i do not understand why instead of having the power stars/grand stars stolen by bowser (or bowser jr, for the movie) for use as a power source like in the game, they decided to stick rosalina in a box in a "kidnapped princess" role. that's just not rosalina's role at all! keep the power stars, have bowser jr come and somehow manage to take them away, and then have rosalina send out a call for help because her ship is stranded in deep space or something - you could retain the "rosalina is missing" aspect of the movie that way, and although i think she shouldnt have to be completely sidelined this at least would have been a respectable way to do it that mostly aligns with the game.
along those lines, if you don't like rosalina sending out a call herself and/or want a luma to still go directly to peach, then: have a luma or two remaining on the gateway galaxy planet who get worried when the observatory doesn't return for a while and then go find peach to ask for help because they're afraid something might have happened to rosalina/the ship. also, the gateway galaxy population in the movie seems to know who rosalina is, so it's totally reasonable that if the observatory didn't return on time people might get worried and put out a missing person notice. especially if bowser jr has already been causing trouble in the area. the same idea would be achieved.
from any of these points, you could still have peach, mario, luigi, etc. going on a journey through the galaxies to find rosalina, but without removing rosalina's agency. the majority of the movie's content with the characters trying to ascertain rosalina's location, going on adventures in the different galaxies, meeting fox, etc. would still work with this, with a few minor context adjustments!
this would eventually reach a point where they find rosalina/the observatory, and then she could either directly join the group and help them find and retrieve the stars or guide them to the end like she does in the game. ideally, the cast would have found some power stars/grand stars during their journey, which would allow rosalina to pilot the observatory to the location of the final battle like she does in the game. (still so annoyed that they basically just gave that cutscene to fox. again, i don't have anything against fox and i actually did think he was a fun character here. but taking away one of rosalina's coolest cutscenes from the game and giving it to fox instead in the "mario galaxy" movie is just so bad, especially considering what they did to rosalina.)
if you want to keep the "rosalina and peach are sisters" point (personally i'd prefer to keep to the storybook canon, but let's think about this here for the sake of argument), then whenever the main cast arrives at the observatory you could have a reunion between peach and rosalina that reveals this backstory and leans into the shared cosmic power thing. and then this should be utilized in the final battle in order to retrieve the remaining stars. (this actually frustrated me so much... there wasnt much payoff for it. you overwrote rosalina's storybook and didnt even use the new information to give her and peach a proper scene of using their powers together in an active way?? come on. by the end of the movie i was honestly just like okay so they have to use this in the final battle right. theyll at least let rosalina and peach fight together with this power they keep talking about, right. a little bit of redemption after all of the bullshit they did to rosalina. but they didnt! what a waste)
if you still wanted only mario, luigi, and yoshi to fight bowser and bowser jr at the end, then sure! that's fine! im of course not saying rosalina and peach should do everything themselves or anything like that. have mario, luigi, and yoshi fighting the bowsers while rosalina and peach use their newfound joint powers to fight their way to the power source and retrieve the stars. the majority of the final battle stuff could be kept mostly the same, except that rosalina could actually play an active role.
also, note that all of the points about bowser jr trying to impress his dad by building the planet and whatnot could be achieved in pretty much exactly the same way using the power stars/grand stars as a power source instead.
then the end of the movie could pretty much stay exactly the same!
cannot possibly overstate how much happier i would have been if something like this had been the plot.
mario galaxy movie spoilers.
actually really annoyed about how much they fumbled rosalina. they did her so dirty. princess kidnapping plot?? and harping on that over and over like "lol all those princesses are always getting kidnapped"? come the fuck on. that is just not a good representation of her character. in fact one big appeal of rosalina in the games is that she's a female character who *doesn't* get subjected to that bs. she is of course not infallible, but she's a powerful and skilled character - the game puts a limit on her without removing her agency, so there's no reason to disrespect her like this instead. ugh
at least they gave her a bit of cool fighting, and leaned into her protecting the lumas at her own expense, because thats actually appropriate characterization. but then they just put her in a box for almost the entire movie. a literal fucking box. seriously?
also the fact that they gave fox her cutscene from the end of the game?? flying *her* ship? dude. i have nothing against fox, and in fact i thought his character was fun here (albeit a bit out of place), but that really sucks. taking away something really cool she did in canon and giving it to someone else is really adding insult to injury here. also, the fact that the observatory is rosalina's ship that she built is another cool and unique part of her character, so it was disappointing that nothing came up about that... i did like the post-credits line where fox says rosalina's the one who fixed his warp drive or whatever though, bc that at least touches on it
it's also incredibly disappointing that they overwrote rosalina's actual canon backstory. it's such an important part of her character, and one of the things that made the game so special. i dont really have a problem with the idea of rosalina and peach being sisters in theory, except that it contradicts the storybook canon. rosalina's backstory is what makes her ending up as the lumas' adoptive mother make sense and have an emotional impact - i don't know how they'd explain that in the movie universe in a way that isn't just underwhelming
man... it's worse because they gave me hope, lol. up until that final trailer i was cautiously optimistic that they'd actually do it right. rosalina looks great, brie larson is a great cast, the observatory looks gorgeous, the first few trailers seemed very much in character, etc. and then they did this
i would have really liked the movie if only they'd done rosalina right - the pacing was still way too fast imo, but otherwise i would have just generally thought it was fun and not thought much beyond that. but unfortunately now im mostly just disappointed and frustrated about how they handled her. sigh.
