Directors Diary - 12 July
Wonderful to see my Italian friends enjoying hot sun and preparing for 12 July Alibi theatre workshops at the Studio, De la Warr Pavilion, Bexhill (see photo of outdoor rehearsal).
The themes of Galileo and Bacon, take us into many journeys, most of them about courage, observation and the philosophy of direct experience as a source of human realization. Courage brings risks, imprisonment, isolation or ridicule. Bacon and Galileo experienced both.
Puglia is currently a location of hope, as is south east England for thousands of desperate refugees fleeing unwanted wars in their own countries. People in Puglia, like East Sussex, have strong feeling about the treatment of the land, whether by the exploitation of fracking, or in Puglia, the illegal dumping of poisonous waste in the countryside. An important reason to have cultural arts festivals is to share these important conversations.
Alibi will no doubt consider ideas from the public as material to include in their performance on Thursday 16th at the Stade Hall. Alibi work in a contemporary physical way to communicate and stimulate community and global concerns.
The evening will begin at 6pm with Argalio playing pizzica music, and teaching the southern ‘pizzica balla’. Come and join in and have some Italian iced cream.
Thank you to Sussex Coast College for hosting our artists’ residency, in particular, Jeb Haward, for creating a space for us. We launch the Sussex Coast College residency with an inflatable planetarium from Sussex University along with East Sussex Astronomy Society. If you have never seen the planets or stars in a planetarium, with the magic of a physics explanation, now is your chance. Monday 13th, 11am till 4pm.
Argalio will entertain with dance and live music at the Jenny Lind, 8pm Wed 15th. Songs in the banned Griko language from the Greek towns of Puglia.
