Murdoc leaves a voice mail to Ceri Levy who was the director of the Gorillaz documentary film Bananaz. For some reason, Murdoc didn’t like how the movie turned out.

real talk, and i HATE to be a negative nancy, because gorillaz has always been a bit of dumb fun, but this writing is boring
it’s not the end of the world, but just about everything these characters have had to say for the past year or so has been the same handful of jokes over and over. russel’s hot sauce, murdoc being “reformed” (read: denying misdeeds over and over until it gets old), murdoc talking about how great and godlike he is (and not in the fun vengeful way, in the banal, unearned god complex way), 2D’s snacks and odd pets, noodle being hip with the kid lingo…the horse is beyond dead. they appear to be written with mostly brand-friendliness and meme-ability in mind. they feel like mascots rather than virtual musicians. i literally wouldnt care if they had anything else to say, but they never do. i wouldnt care if they approached it with a bit of dry wit or snark or social commentary beyond “recycling is good!” but they don’t. and it’s kinda disheartening
the reliance on advertisement/brand deals is necessary now that record labels are defunct, i know, but if it means trading every ounce of controversial or funny or insightful dialogue for the same 5 watered-down, silly bits, maybe a different angle is needed.
the music and art are still fantastic! the foundation laid for these characters is solid and rich with interesting and funny trivia, that won’t change. I just wish they’d do anything with any of it

Learnt to use the morpher modifier in class and then it was over. 4 days worth of work - my first full character model, rig, and animation. Walking through hell was worth it. He has so many subtle face movements.... Soon he'll have textures. 😗
THE NOW NOW IS OUT NOW- today… and i’m so happy. :”000

“The balance of the characters, I think is brilliant… at the time, you had Noodle, who’s very, very quiet, and probably the smartest of the whole bunch. Her femininity and patience and zen-life, coupled with the ability to play an extraordinary Jackson Pollock guitar is, like, amazing. And then you’ve got 2D, who’s pretty, and calm, and he’s probably the one that the girls would go for, he’s the lead singer, he’s pretty vacant. And that’s balanced with Russel, who is probably the only real musician in the band, he’s someone who really understands it. He brings a whole different sensibility and weight and gravity to it. And then you’ve got Murdoc, who’s, he is what you see: he’s all the rotten bits of everything, but there’s real heart in there somewhere, down in his pants but it’s definitely in there… and he’s just full of fucking desire, and he’s full of need and urgency and jealousy and rage. And the potential to really open up those dynamics between the four… they all, ostensibly, like most bands, there’s falling-outs, and this and that, but they come together and they create this thing that’s better than all of them.”
— Cass Browne describing Gorillaz on Hallelujah Monkeyz
“Across the 20 years and six studio albums of Gorillaz, the characters have evolved with their stories. Noodle has grown up and become a woman (“which is something cartoon characters tend not to do,” Jamie says) and 2-D has transformed from a delicate wallflower into an extremely confident adult. In fact, on their latest record, The Now Now (released in June 2018), 2-D’s confidence has become a problematic arrogance. He has dominated interviews this year, answering questions with fired-up but vague declarations that make no sense under inspection. “I am able to see into the heart of things,” he said in an interview with Noisey, “like one of those X-rays at the airport where they look at your pants.” “I guess there’s a lesson in there,” Jamie explains, “which is that sometimes to not believe in yourself is a good thing. Not having too much confidence can keep you grounded, and keep you focused on the most important things, which is your work and your art. That’s what you must focus on, not yourself.”
