Rick is probably drinking as much as he is because he has romantic feelings for his grandson (the only living breathing human being that can handle him) and is drowning in guilt.
Both talking about how she doesn’t like the amount of adults Morty is friends with,
Summer pointing out how unhealthy their relationship is in the same season,
Evil Morty emotionally destroying Morty by weaponizing his love for Rick,
Morty calling Evil Morty a ‘home wrecker’,
I can’t help but to think that they both know they’re grossly into each other but Rick cares enough to not do anything about it and self destruct. The feelings are definitely mutual now.

Haha, well Rick has already done stuff about it like begging Morty to kiss him while he was drunk. So no matter how much he cares, he doesn't seem that able to control himself!
But can I just say I'm so pleasantly surprised that the show seems to be acknowledging just how messed up their relationship is? I was not expecting this after Rick's therapy arc.
I mean they kind of had to regress Rick's character to maintain a conflict, but I had gotten used to the show using the Diane backstory to portay Rick as a wholesome good guy turned jaded and angsty.
But no, the man is FUCKED up. He sympathized with a dude named Pissmaster who sexually harassed his granddaughter instead of being the one to stick up for her. And I think people in the fandom saw this as being a positive development because he felt bad that the sexual harasser killed himself, but he spent the episode explicitly identifying with him and trying to rehabilitate his image? Again, this was the guy who harassed his teenage granddaughter.
Is that or is that not creepy?
So Rick's got some skeletons in the closet for sure. I just kind of assumed, like some other people did, that the show would stop referencing incestuous and predatory elements of the character dynamics after Roiland was booted. The writers were already working on season 9 back then, and they could have changed ANY of this if they wanted to. But instead they ended up being more direct about it in little pieces of dialog that suggest a deliberate effort to acknowledge the truth of the Rick and Morty dynamic. And that's the fact that it was based on an obscene animated parody featuring CSA that Harmon stated he enjoyed repackaging for mainstream consumption while keeping the character dynamic.
The character dynamic was quite literally Rick grooming Morty. So this shit is baked into the series and I'm glad that it seems to be bubbling to the surface instead of being hidden as if it never existed.
