These photos mark one of the most incredible experiences of my life. I was visiting some friends on an island when they asked if I wanted to go for a canoe ride. While we were out there, they told me we were going to visit a smaller island called Magate. As soon as we pulled up the the shore, just about every child on the island was watching us, and a few adults were recording us on little old cameras. They showed us around their home, we took some pictures, and played with the kids; all was well. The kids were a little cautious, but I just figured that was because I’m a mzungu and all. And then one of them told me that I was the first white man to ever step foot on their island. The smaller children had never even seen somebody looking like me (which explains why the babies were so scared when their mother’s tried to get me to hold them). But some of them warmed up to me and that’s when I got to take these photos. Shortly after, they asked us to pray and bless the village. What an honor it was to be the first people from my side of the world to visit their village and to be able to share laughter and prayer with them, rather than something negative. Everybody in America always talks and dreams about “exploring the unknown” and in a way, I truly got to do that. I got to make history. I experienced an unadulterated island tribe in “old Kenya” that the outside world has hardly touched. It sounds so silly to say it, but I honestly feel different now. I feel more connected to humanity than I ever have before. This is what traveling is all about to me: finding those rare opportunities to experience the world from somebody else’s perspective.

This girl was crying and begging the policeman not to hit her or any of her friends. Then the policeman started crying as well and he said to her: “You just hold on girl.”

The photo comes from protests happening in Bulgaria right now. Students are protesting poverty and corruption in Bulgaria’s Socialist-backed government, chaining themselves to the doors of Sofia University and clashing with police outside of parliament.
