ut / dr  belongs  to  toby  fox  (beloved).    ‘the  red  soul’  bears  some  similarities  to  concepts  such  as  underplayer  by  yunan,   &&   core!frisk  by  dokudoki  as  well  as  community  concepts  surrounding  the  knight  /  angel  /  vessel.    however,    you  do  not  have  to  have  knowledge  of  any  of  these  inspirations  in  order  to  interact.

all  the  art,     edits,    etc,   used  on  this  blog  belong  to  me  unless  otherwise  specified.    my  art  style  isn’t  that  unique  but  i’m  trying  to  do  something  here.    the  general  ‘verse  tag’    for  faust’s  ‘au’    is  called  ‘petalstale’  /  ‘petalsrune’  /  ‘petalsfell’    for  reasons  i  will  explain  later.

this  character,    regardless,    is  entirely  my  own.    ‘faust’    is  not  a  representation  of  frisk,     chara,    or  kris  but  rather  a  separate  entity  with  abilities  that  allow  them  to  control  individuals  who  possess  a  red  soul  (with  limitations).

faust  is  old,    but  appears  to  be  in  their  mid-twenties  when  manifesting  without  a  ‘vessel’.    shipping  or  w/e  may  happen  but  never  involving  /  while  possessing  /  in  the  presence  of  minors  /  the  red  souls’  vessels    (aka:  frisk,    chara,    kris,  etc.).     i’m  not  about  that.   

stance  on  erotica,   as  above,    but  with  feeling.    don’t  involve  the  kids  or  your  kneecaps  are  forfeit    (i’ll  block  you).

if  you  have  a  problem  with  my  portrayal   of  the  knight  /  angel  /  red  soul  /  player  as  an  adult  that’s  fine.    you  can  not  follow   /    block  me  for  your  comfort,    w/e.    i  will  do  my  best  not  to  bother  you.    but  i  won’t  change  how  i  write  a  character  i  made  up.

BATTLE THEME:  Child Protective Services Theme Song SHORT BIO:  running  from  the  police,    faust  fell  into  the  underground  at  some  point  in  between  the  first  &&  last  human  to  fall.    they  never  met  toriel.    instead,    they  met  a  strange  man.    a  scientist  experimenting  with  determination  as  a  means  of  rewriting  the  world  as  monsters  &&  humans  knew  it.    a  non-living  thing  cannot  possess  much  of  the  desire  to  live,    but  a  living  human  can.

along  with  the  strange  man,    the  human  fell  into  the  core,    with  very  little  form,    ability,    or  reason  to  interact  with  the  underground  after  what  transpired  --  until  a  child  with  a  red  SOUL  fell,    &&  it  realized  the  power  they  held.

they  are  still;    a  red  chain  hangs  limp  attached  to  a    SOUL    on  the  floor  between  it    &&    you.    that’s  the  question  isn’t  it?    &&  they  are  tempted  to  reply  with  a  question  of  their  own.    how  do  you  know  the  tether  wasn’t  loosened  before  you  tore  it?

         FOR  a  moment,  sans  wasn’t  wholly  sure  what  he  just  heard.  it wasn’t even out of distaste for the words.  he wasn’t sure what to make of it, but after a brief moment of silence, he let out a little laugh.  it was a fair point that faust had, one he wouldn’t really deny them or himself. 

           ❛  at least i’m still pretty.  ❜   he joked lightly,  hands delving into soft hoodie pockets.  comfortable.   ❛  pretty funny too, i’d like to think.  come on, admit it.  ❜

   he  didn’t mind a dig or two in his direction;   after all,  it was just the way things were.  he would be poked fun at, he would laugh along, the day would continue.  it didn’t matter  &&  that wasn’t a stretch of truth.  gotta know how to not take yourself seriously, or you’d go mad.

SCRATCHY,    unshaven  chin  rests  against  their  knuckles.    they  watch  the  skeleton  with  a  sense  of  warm,    keen  interest.    faust  isn’t  surprised  when  he  laughs,    sans  is  nothing  if  not  one  big  joke.

𝐂.  WELL, SHIT. guess he deserved that. 

or did he? after all, when a fresh face made an appearance in his corner of the world, his people had to be the first to know. sometimes that meant scoping out the competition as a kindness; sometimes it meant getting to them first as a mercy. paps would’ve yelled talked this kid’s ear off, and wings, well … 

he didn’t want to know what would happen if he bugged gaster for something as trivial as this. 

even if he was slightly intoxicated. more than slightly. hell, sans was pretty good and soused. it had been another shitty day in a long string of shitty days, and you know what? he’d fucking earned it. playing nice with the humans had drained his patience down to the dregs, and zapping around town for little emergencies had pretty much done the same to his magic. what was left of it floated around him in a dizzy haze, flowing freely from wherever it could escape. he’d needed this.

forgive him, he guessed, if he was getting a little too pushy. he’d just wanted to talk. humans didn’t just show up at grillby’s, nor did they stick around for a drink or two when they realized what an unfortunate mistake they’d made. as red had knocked back glass after glass of his good stuff, the apprehension he’d felt about them faded away, replaced with an apt curiosity. who they were became suddenly more important than what they’d wanted. when they’d finally made their exit from the bar, purpose unknown, red had decided to take his leave as well, trailing a distance behind. in spite of his size, red was a fairly quiet guy - and thanks to his teleportation, made an easy approach. 

“C’MAHN,” he’d crooned, leering over them with a distant grin. “ ALL’S I’M asking is t’talk. you know what ‘talkin is, right, buddy? or are you ‘jus a pretty face’n a cheap fuck - “

yeah, he hadn’t expected a knee to the gut. 

a mixture of a groan and a wheeze escaped from his mouth, as well as the threat of something else. turning away from the human he’d so kindly cornered, red doubled, hacking and choking and trying not to lose his spirits ( hah. puke humor ) or, more dangerously, his temper. he kept one ginger hand on his stomach as he stood again, staggering ever so slightly under his own weight, and wiped away the drool dribbling down his chin. 

“RIGHT. RIGHT, smartass, I get it. ah’ll back off. way to make this easy.” 

to  their  credit,    they  weren’t  here  to  cause  trouble.    lot  like  him,    just  blow  off  some  steam  in  a  town  that  didn’t  know  them.    just  play  a  few  shitty  card  games  with  some  new  faces    &&    maybe  trick  a  fella  or  two  out  of  some  pocket  change.    well,    just  that  ...      &&    listening.

people  sure  say  a  lot  of  stupid  things  in  bars,    don’t  they?    a  lot  of  revealing  things,    too.   even  around  a  human  they’ve  never  seen  in  this  neck  of  the  woods  before.   even  a  human  with  such  brutally  familiar  black  hair    &&    pale,    freckled  skin.

a  notepad,    entangled  in  bandaged  fingers.    they  should  have  realized  sooner  they  were  being  followed.    docility    &&    manners  required  they  be  the    BIGGER    person,    to  not  respond  to  vulgarity  at  all.    but  it’s  hard  to  be  polite  when  you’ve  got  a  big  guy  breathing  down  your  neck.

it  made  their  hair  stand  on  end.    they’d  reACTED  before  they  could  stop  themself.    a  knee  to  his  gut.    [FIGHT]  stronger  than  flight.    they  stare  him  down  through  hollow  eye.

           ❛   you  shouldn’t  have  followed  me.  ❜          it’s  a  statement,    not  a  threat,    though  the  edge  rising  up  in  the  back  of  their  throat  speaks  volumes  to  the  vitriol  hiding  just  behind  it,           ❛   looking  for  an  escort?    you  got  the  wrong  guy,    pal.    it’d  cost  you  your  life.  ❜          

fingers  tense,    body  hunched,    eye  searches  everywhere  but  him.    scanning  the  otherwise  empty  alley  way.    it’s  hitting  them,    finally  --    who  this  is.    &&  that,    oh  that  isn’t  good.    eye  flicks  back  up  to  him  when  he  speaks,    &&    the  human  takes  that  as  their  queue  to  bolt.    running  right  past  him    &&    out  into  the  street.

                                 *  the  human  ran  away.

breathless,    shaking,    they  face  him  from  the  other  side  of  the  street.    grinning  like  the  devil  himself.

i’ll  preface  this  by  saying  that  faust  is  not  ‘the  red  soul’    exactly,    they’re  simply  the  one  who  has  control  over  it.    frisk’s  soul  is  frisk’s,    chara’s  was  chara’s,    kris’s  belongs  to  kris.

it  can  simply  control  the  red  souls,    in  spite  of  the  fact  that  they  don’t  belong  to  them,    thanks  to  their  magic  &&  the  other  effects  of  THE  CORE.

frisk.

frisk  was  its  first,    surprisingly  easy  to  control.    likely  on  account  of  them  being  so  young?    they  do  little  outside  of  prompting,    &&  most  of  it  is  just  either  being  a  kiddo    (rolling  around  in  bed)    or  going  along  with  whatever  the  other  adults  say.    following  tori,    listening  to  sans  ...  etc.    either  way  that  was  a  long  time  ago,    &&  faust  hadn’t  really  perfected  the  technique.

chara.

chara  is  a  result.    it’s  arguable  if  the  kid  still  has  a  soul,    &&  therefore  if  faust  can  genuinely  control  them  at  all.    i  would  say  they  have  some  limited  amount  of  control,    just  due  to  the  fact  chara  occupies  frisk’s  body.    but  it  quickly  loses  it  once  they  amass  too  much  lv.    chara  is  basically  made  of  the  stuff,    rather  than  a  soul,    so  yeah,    controlling  them  isn’t...    easy.

kris.

by  now  it  knows  what  it’s  doing.    it  can  control  kris  even  when  kris  resists,    the  only  way  kris  can  be  rid  of  its  pull    (for  good  or  ill)    is  by  the  removal  of  their  own  soul.    kris  is  a  lot  more  ...  stubborn,    &&  resilient  than  frisk  was.    in  a  lot  of  ways,    faust  respects  this,    but  will  not  stay  its  had  on  their  account.

in  spite  of  appearances,    outside  of    ‘no  mercy’    timelines,    it  does  genuinely  care  about  them.    it  simply  views  itself  as  ...  above  them,    &&  does  not  believe  they  would  last  long  in  its  absence.

“So it’s you again.” They murmur into clasped palms, diligent in that they cover the ugly smile that’s risen to their face. It’s not one of malice, though, it’s one of nerves – it’s always been an anxious tick of theirs, that hideous grin. “…I presume you’re bored, then. Ready to cast your lure to bigger and better waters? Catch some new fish? Oh, I bet you’d love that…” It’s funny. they’ve never met face to face, but on a primal level, Chara feels as though they’ve been acquainted for a lifetime.

“…But there’s only so many factors to consider here, isn’t there? You know that as well as I do. You can’t seriously want to run the numbers again after so long, can you?”

THEY  SAY  CURIOSITY  KILLED  THE  CAT,        but  it’d  never  been  one  for  metaphor.    it  watches  chara  with  a  vaguely  fond  disinterest  when  they  speak.    even  in  this  place,    it  is  difficult  for  them  to  hold  form  for  very  long  ...    but  time,    ah  time  it  stands  for  it  as  it  stands  before  them.

the  lost  one,    awoken  through  the  heat  of  it’s  sins.    hand  brushes  orange,    turning  it  yellow.    the  child,     the  child,    the  child.

THE  HALL  IS  IN  RUINS.    bones   protrude  from   the  ground  between  broken  tiles,    reaching  to  the  ceiling  like  macabre  columns.    he’s  getting  tired.    it  saw  it,    on  his  face.    he’d  tried  to  reason  to  someone  who  wasn’t  listening,    the  child  that  stands  before  them.

                                ‘  the  anomaly  ’    he’d  called  them.    how  unbearably  naive.    maybe,    the  flower  they’d  spoken  too  in  THE  RUINS  had  been  right.    maybe  it  all  was  just  predetermined  scripts,    lazy,    repetitive  interaction.    worthless,    meaningless.    he’d  asked  for  MERCY.

                                  *  it  refused.

it  wondered  what  had  changed,    when  the  skeleton’s  eyes  moved  from  the  child  up  to  where  they  stood,    far  away.    hand  extended  outward,    beckoning  that  the  child  might  continue.    it  wouldn’t  have  even  noticed,    far  too  distracted  by  the  battle  itself.

if  the  attack  did  not  suddenly  land.     the  sound  is  unmistakable,    &&  for  a  moment,    the  monster  &&  the  skeleton  make  eye  contact.

his  ribcage  marred  with  deep  enough  gouge  to  nearly  split  him  in  two,    red  drips  onto  sun  soaked  mosaic  in  this  very  hall  of    JUDGEMENT.

when  he  speaks  he  isn’t  speaking  to  them  anymore.    the  GUIDE  feels  ill,    don’t  look  at  it.    don’t  SPEAK  TO  IT.

he  went  off  the  script,    &&   so  they  return  the  kindness,    in  this  singular  moment,    as  his  body  dissipates  to  dust,    soul  rests  on  the  cusp  of  oblivion.    

            ❛   it   was   always   going   to   end   like   this.  ❜          it  looks  away  from  the  dust  as  it  scatters  by  their  feet  &&  to  the  child    --  no,    not  even  that,    anymore.

ONE  thing  i  genuinely  want  to  get  across  with  my  portrayal  is  that  (generally  speaking)    the  red  soul  is  not  malevolent.    their  primary  goal  is  that  of  a  --    guide.    heavy  handed,    unvelveted  iron  gripped,    but  a  guide  all  the  same.

in  the  scenarios  in  which  they  take  the  human  into  consideration  less,    it’s  not  about  causing  harm  for  harm’s  sake,    they  have  ulterior  motives.    no  mercy  in  ut,    for  instance  was  not  just  a  projection  of  their  own  suffering  onto  a  fragile  world,   but  also  a  corrupt  form  of  justice.

not  allowing  the  monsters  freedom  after  they  decided  it  would  be  worth  the  lives  of  multiple  human  children.    leaving  this  place  vacant  in  a  more  significant  way  --    forcing  a  certain  former  royal  scientist  to  watch.    it’s  a  bitter,    sick  form  of  karmic  action  to  them.

chara’s  turn  around  in  this  case,    is   a  surprise.    a  snapped  chord  between  it  &&  frisk,    leaving  them  more  or  less  blind.    when  chara  asks  for  the  soul,    they  hand  it  over    (after  all,    it  belongs  to  frisk,    not  them).    it  doesn’t  generally  get  attached  to  frisk  until  it  learns  their  name  in  the  pure  pacifist  route,    so  you  can  imagine  that  the  “soulless  pacifist  route”  is  upsetting.
