adora’s turn!
Is it possible for you to write some meta on how Catra could possibly still be redeemed after this season?
Yes! Actually, Catra lays out the plan for her own redemption in 03x01. Her first appearance this season gives a lot of insight into her mentality, and it also shows where she needs to make changes in her mindset and actions. Here’s what she needs to do:
1. Take responsibility for her actions and develop self-confidence
Catra’s seeming overconfidence this season is actually a negative coping mechanism; in reality, she feels vulnerable and lacks self-confidence. She needs to seek out situations where she can grow as a person and develop real faith in her skills and abilities – perhaps with her people, the Magicats. Even more importantly, she needs to own up to her bad decisions. Catra thinks she does everything right, but she makes a lot of poor choices, and they send her spiraling toward rock bottom this season. She can only redeem herself after she accepts that her actions were wrong.
2. Realize that she doesn’t need to prove herself to anyone
Catra is a victim of abuse. She has spent her entire life trying to prove herself to Shadow Weaver and Hordak – who have never given her real acknowledgment, much less love or recognition. Catra will need to realize that the people she tries so hard to please aren’t worthy of her efforts.
3. Let go of Shadow Weaver entirely
We all know that Shadow Weaver is the worst and should be kicked to the curb. Catra, though, is still stuck in the spiral of her abuse. Even though her rational mind knows that Shadow Weaver is a bad person, she still feels compelled to seek out her affection. Catra needs to find real adult role models (again, this would be where the Magicats come in) that can show her what a caring parental figure really looks like.
4. Acknowledge that her emotions do not make her a weaker person
Catra believes that caring about other people makes her weak. Ultimately, this ruins her relationships with Adora, Scorpia, and Entrapta – the people who care about her in return. Instead of rejecting her softer emotions, Catra needs to acknowledge them. She isn’t a weaker person for having feelings other than anger, which drives almost everything she does. Catra can only be redeemed when she opens herself up to the fact that it’s okay to care about others.
5. Accept help
Catra hits her lowest point at the end of the season, when she realizes that Adora won’t excuse her actions anymore and is prepared to view her as an enemy. At this point, Catra has driven away everyone who previously tried to help her. But this reminds me of a great quote from The Legend of Korra: “When we hit our lowest point, we are open to the greatest change.” Without anyone supporting her, Catra will realize that she can’t do everything on her own. She needs to accept help from other people in order to change – and ultimately grow into a better person.
