I occasionally see people talk about Megumi being hyper-independent due to being neglected as a child (though I could stand to hear about it more) but I rarely ever hear about Yuji's independence.

We have no idea how early he lost his parents. At the start of the show, we assume he lives alone at 15 because his only legal guardian is in hospital. It would be safe to assume Yuji spent a lot of his teens looking after himself and his grandpa. He's fairly popular, but he doesn't have any close friends. After his last family member died, no one aunt, cousin, or friend checked in on him. In fact, he was the one to go bring flowers to his friend.

In retrospect, his determination to make friends before he dies makes a lot of sense. Yuji is an incredibly lonely person. No wonder the people he met at Jujutsu High meant a lot to him. No wonder he killed himself in order to save Megumi, who he'd only known for 3 weeks but was probably his closest friend. No wonder that he was unphased when Gojo told him he'd have to die.
