PORTOBESEBNO is a soundscape/music festival taking place in Calliano, near Trento, northern italy. I was invited to its residence program (6/25-29, 2012).

During my stay for five days, I recorded environmental sounds of the region and also generated resonating sounds from found objects with my sound devices(oscillator and feedback set). A watergate, storages in the farm and vineyard iron wires were my main objects to work on. In composing and mixing, some of recordings were processed to some degree and some were left as it were recorded. The track evolves around three places/sonic ideas -village, mountain, and farm.

drops

a mixture of raindrops falling on different materials. i played with wine glass, metal door, stainless clothes dryer, light metal frame, classic guitar... i spent six hours of listening/recording on drops and it never made me bored. it was simply amazing listening experience. i wish i could do something similar with wind. all done with contact mic at a small yard at my house. ...later mixed with sampled recordings from a resonant wine glass. i really enjoyed playing a wine glass. loved its pure sine wave tone.

under_the_bridge

Last night, i had a night recording/playing session just for myself under the bridge near a river in seoul. As sound sources, I used...contact mics(piezo/w preamp), amplifiers, loudspeakers, a (distorted) square oscillator, passing subways, and a metal column which is attached to a leg of railroad bridge. Basically I made out noise/resonated feedback sound with this setting. I loved this hidden outdoor performance... Few people passed by me but they would've never thought that I was actually playing things so seriously...

Recording was done with zoom h4.

My handmade preamp/amp frequently captured some japanese radio signals, which came to be a part of my session...

Based on recordings, I did arrangements and rough mixing later giving it reverb/delay.

I've been occupied with material as a source to create sounds for last few months. I attached two piezo/speaker units to a hanging brass sheet to find some harmonics while resonating the metal with audio feedback. I recorded twice with a separate piezo onto my small mixer and just layered two tracks on laptop later. I used handmade piezo preamp and audio amp, which I'm very proud of! :)

[workshop] Sound Treasure Hunt

Recently, I participated in a youth media camp as a tutor. It was organized by kuma, a youth center in bucheon and the camp took place on a small island for 3 days. I gave out a sound workshop called '소리보물찾기'(Sound Treasure Hunt) with 10 kids. On 1st day, we had a walk for an hour around the village with listening to sounds, recording them, and wrote sonic details of them on soundcard. And on 2nd day, based on those activities, we draw a sound map showing 12 sounds that we liked and turned it into an audio guide. On 3rd day, we had a quick walk with other kids from different workshops all together with the map and audio guide.

[interview] Blow-Up magazine

Few month ago, I had a quite intense interview with Leandro Pisano from italian Blow-Up magazine and it was printed out on the May issue. Leandro is also a curator of Interferenze new arts festival, which has unique program like Click'n'Food, Third Soundscape: for a database of Irpinia Sonic Landscape. Their interest is in rurality, sustainability and territory.

On 27 June, at a small cafe 'Cafe O:wl', I gave out 20 mins of sound performance with a group of people who makes music based on field recording. I forgot to record my session on that day, so I upload the recording track of rehearsal. For the set, I used Tascam 4 track cassette recorder with handmade loop tapes which contains 12 samples from my sound library. And for live input, I used pebbles and leaves, which were processed mainly in Looper in ableton live.

Last february, I participated in sound workshop as a tutor and our mission was to make sound postcard! Kids loved whatever they were listening through mic/headphone. They endlessly kept making stories!

[mix] Urban Oscillators

  Urban Oscillators - SoundLocalities Mix by Jiyeon Kim

This mix was done for SoundLocalities Mix Compilation.

I selected 6 sounds with two rules regardless of their origins and context: 1) having ir/regular rhythmic patterns in themselves. 2) having distinctive frequency domain in which sounds are mainly unfolded. And then, I tried to make all these frequencies and rhythms blended into one another or sometimes one beat the other.

The trip was done 3 times, 10 days in total, from mid december 2010 to late january 2011. During the field trip, as much as I was pleased by the nature itself in which I tried to go deeper with sounds into its poetic and dreamy scenery, I was also deeply inspired by the people that who accompanied me on the trip: their exquisite sense of nature, extensive knowledge on ecosystem, passionate attitude which made them risk to get closer to the nature, their unique aesthetics and strict process to collect the sample. So, I made this album as a sonic impression that i had from the trip and at the same time, personal audio documentary of it, so to say. The trip was under wildlife documentary workshop organized by eco-science department at Ewha Women's University. A very special thanks to Dongguen Lim who allowed me to join this amazing trip.
