"Cooking with Cage"

“Cooking With Cage” is the 15th episode of SWITCH, an artists television program produced by artists in Western Massachusetts and includes work from various towns, cities and countries. This episode includes works from the NYC area. Cooking With Cage features an archival video, courtesy of Arleen Schloss, showing John Cage and Alison Knowles preparing a meal in John Cage’s kitchen. The visual is supported by their spoken interpretation of Stephane Mallarme’s Un coup de des jamais n’abolira le hasard: A throw of the dice will never abolish chance. 2012 Is the centennial celebration of John Cage. Cooking With Cage also includes a new performance by GLOVE of John Cage’s 4′ 33″ using the timings originally performed by David Tudor in Wooodstock NY. The score of 4′ 33″ indicates 3 movements each marked “Tacet” where the movements may be any chosen lengths of time as long as they collectively add up to 4 minutes and 33 seconds.

Eunoia -Christian Bök

With his book Eunoia, Christian Bök takes his place on the historical spectrum of East coast experimental sound. Bök, a conceptual artist, poet and pataphysician, works within the intersection of sound and language. Eunoia, an anthology of univocalics, was published in 2001 by Coach House Books and showcases Bök’s use of self-imposed linguistic constraints— allocating the use of a single vowel in each of the five chapters—to create experimental sonic games. It is telling to note that Chapter ‘I’ is dedicated to the Fluxus artist and publisher Dick Higgins.

Remixed Water - Ned Sublette & Lawrence Weiner

The CD Remixed Water is a collection of songs remixed from two of avant-garde musician Ned Sublette and conceptual artist Lawrence Weiner’s collaborative albums, Ships at Sea, Sailors and Shoes (1993) and Monsters From the Deep (1997). The tracks are reconfigured by selected contemporary artists, who ‘update’ the original compositions by placing them in the context of the then current (2005) musical soundtrack of the urban environment, casting Weiner’s two-step lyrical style into an anarchy of chance musical pairings.

Shuffle - Christian Marclay

Shuffle Box Set by Christian Marclay, is a Fluxus inspired box set that presents photographic documentation of the prevalence of musical notation in the artist’s daily environment. These ‘musical clues’, found on shop signs, t-shirts, and other urban embellishments, are so numerous that they become easily overlooked, and in a sense, hidden. Marclay’s collection of images form a deck of cards that can be played to produce a multitude of spontaneous musical scores, in a nod to John Cage’s notions of musical chance.

Letter From NYC - Sonic Youth

Sonic Youth’s Letter from NYC marks the final publication in the Little Cockroach Press Series, a collection of artist pamphlets published and distributed free of charge by Art Metropole. Letter from NYC features personal documentation by the band and includes a picture of guitarist Thurston Moore as a teenager listening to Lou Reed’s Metal Machine Music. This photograph provides an early example of the band’s interest in atonal music, which would be fostered in the early 1980s NYC music scene that included avant-garde composer Glenn Branca and musician Ned Sublette.

‘The Anthology of Audio by Visual Artists’ (#21) - Curated by Claudia Gould

‘The Anthology of Audio by Visual Artists’ (#21) was originally released through a subscription to the Tellus Audio Cassette Magazine, which was a bimonthly publication from 1983-1993. Tellus Audio Cassette Magazine started by Joseph Nechvatal, Carol Parkinson and Claudia Gould, focused on a shared interest in the audiocassette as a post-Fluxus medium, and had a strong presence in the underground music cultures of Lower East Side Manhattan in the 1980s. Published in 1988, this issue curated by Claudia Gould, includes recordings by visual artists from Futurism, Dada, Lettrism, Fluxus up to the contemporary working artists of the 1980s. The publication also featured some of the original recordings of Christian Marclay, Sonic Youth and Glenn Branca.

2 Radio Solos - Michael Snow

Michael Snow’s 2 Radio Solos from 1981 is a two composition radio sound clash, published on audio cassette, in which Snow, relying on chance and fate, recorded his improvisational “playing” of a 1962 Normende shortwave radio over the course of one night. Like Christian Marclay’s early use of the turntable as instrument, Snow’s two compositions are built around what is conventionally deemed as the misuse of the tool. Here Snow’s use of the frequencies between stations, changes in pitch and EQ, and random tunings combine with moments of dialogues in a variety of languages, resulting in physical documentation of the invisible radio waves that surround us.
