crispy脆乐团 finally released their full-length album, 有多少光就有多少黑 : )
this album is soft, gentle, and dreamy. if you have known them from their earlier singles like 偶尔回来几天 and 月亮圆不圆, you will be comforted to know that most songs in this album retain a characteristically crispy sound - peaceful ballads that sound like they were simply meant to exist in this world, unquestioned & undisturbed. my favourites here are 涂抹 and 为我好.

this is the first mv to have ever brought me to tears
to begin with, i believe this song will always stand on its own, eternally un-coverable, its magic immediately lost the moment it is removed from itself. this singer’s charm lies in his straight-forward tone, edfortlessly conveying the pain, whole & raw, and yet there remains an enigmatic quality, a raspiness that veils, that hints at both longing & a certain resignation. the instrumental opens up from quiet strumming & slowly fades into an intense motif that sounds too much like howling in the dark - an inconsolable yearning
before this, i never knew the act of leaving could be conveyed so simply yet so heart-breakingly. two tickets & two bentos for one person. you never quite know if this person is the one leaving or the one left behind. the ending then lingers on the dilemma between futility & maybe - it makes you wonder if he will ever be consoled by the impartial inevitable or he will always masochistically allow hope to burn behind his eyes once more

it's been a while & 4:00AM by 荷尔蒙少年 (my second favourite song?) is still stuck with me. or rather, i am still stuck with it, in it.
("'my' - what does this word designate? not what belongs to me, but what i belong to, what contains my whole being, which is mine insofar as i belong to it")
there are some kinds of music you fall in love with because they reached out & moved something in you. some you just like the sound of. some made their way permanently into your consciousness through multiple revisits. this song must be a combination of all that. something about it makes it so easy to sink into. perhaps it is the exuberant heartbreak! that sounds so frivolous & silly - like young, unreciprocated love always is - and yet embodies a universal memory, a faceless silhouette, a shard of time. or perhaps it is the phantom whisper: you thought you knew what grief was but in reality it hides & warps itself into so many different forms that you can never be too sure. i suppose this in itself is also the power of music, a disguise & also a revelation.

椅子乐团 (the chairs) means something special to me. 建议是看开点 is one of the first c-alternative songs i stumbled onto & fell in love with on spotify, & i only fell deeper into the rabbit hole since.
i believe music cannot be thought about separately from fate & time. you only fall in love with the music you're meant to hear at that point in your life, & yet you will always come across the music you're meant to hear in this lifetime. music is the marker of time, the passer of time. when experiencing music, you are just one of the temporary passengers lucky enough to occupy this sound space for a fraction of eternity.
yesterday, i was searching for something else but happened to come across a song from 椅子乐团's latest album, LOVELY SUNDAY樂芙莉聖代, and i knew i had to hear it in its entirety. it's one of the most pleasant albums i've heard in the recent months. a lot of people in the youtube comments compare 椅子乐团 to sunset rollercoaster, but i think they're only partially right; 椅子乐团 sounds a lot like the old sunset rollercoaster, before their casanova ep.
lovely sunday sounds completely & intentionally chill. picture a sunday brunch just outside of the city, with gentle sunlight & breeze & just that bit of humidity, a respite from the hustle & bustle of modern life. the album has a hint of japanese city pop from the 70s/80s, but with slightly less of that iconic jazz funk. my favourites here are dedede, slow down, 日常的镜头, & rollin’ on.
the instrumental intro of 日常的镜头 was instantly captivating. the verses sung in japanese were also a pleasant surprise and only added to the ~city pop mystique~. i loved the dreamy instrumental interlude after the first chorus too. dedede & rollin’ on were both chill & playful-sounding, with catchy lyrical segments & instrumental motifs. slow down has a simple guitar backing & sounds vaguely like a throwback to the 50s. if i could choose a song that embodies the spirit of this album, it would be this one; we all need a reminder to slow down in life sometimes.
this album was almost-love on first listen, but i don't think it's one i will keep coming back to. it was pleasant & soothing, and that's about it really; there was a certain emotional depth i was reaching out for but ultimately couldn't find. but overall it is still an album i would recommend if you're seeking something easy & comfortable to listen to

许含光’s music always moves me in a place i didn’t know existed.
while listening to 25, i wrote: "it’s like someone shrunk an entire universe & placed it in the hollows of my ears & chest". it made me feel incredibly sad & incredibly alive at the same time. it made me think of life, music, pain, & how they are all inexplicably connected.
「当初写这首歌的时候是很伤心的，甚至有点绝望，有种想去的地方怎麽那麽远，想念的地方怎麽都绕开的感觉，这辈子没想过这一天会来，却来得这麽快，然后自己好像什麽都没做到…一直以来不知道往哪看，只好一直回头，但『25』就好像是一条宿命性的线，切开了很多东西…」
after reading what he wrote in the youtube description, i couldn’t help but tear up at the marvelous creation that is music. somehow, i felt everything that he attempted to convey in that mere five minutes of song.
it is a universal understanding that music is the quiet companion in our collective isolation. it is one thing to know that someone out there always gets it. it is another to know that a particular someone has taken our universal pain & compressed (or should i say expanded?) it into something that exists in reality that is more tangible than emotion alone.
i suppose music is a natural state in the same way that pain is. but to see it as such disregards the fact that it is simultaneously also salvation.
