I took audio from Epithet Erased - "That Beautiful Sound" by @jelloapocalypse and then animated it with Paper Mario inspired 2.5D models of the characters.
Not the first time I've done stuff in this style but it is by far the largest project.
I'm super happy with how it turned out, especially the "this time I'll get em for sure!" gag.
If it looks kinda unfinished, that's because it is! I was originally gonna do more to animate Martin and Molly, but I'm out of time and energy, and honestly the A posing molly and Martin are funny in their own ways, so more of a trade-down than a let down IMO.

(this is gonna be a long post since I spent three full-ass days drawing this instead of studying for my midterms, so I got a lot to dump)
I was at work on Saturday and "Blame It on the Boogie" by the Jackson 5, and I've been disastrously fixated on Epithet Erased these last few weeks (I straight up joined the Patreon last week and binged a ton of stuff on there. Huge props to Jello btw for having one of the most bang-for-your-buck Patreon's content-wide of any Youtuber I've seen.)
Thus, my brain put it in the AMV-making machine and spit out an animatic I now need to make, with characters tied to the song's chorus.
Breakdown:
Don't blame it on the sunshine: Giovanni
Don't blame it on the moonlight: Lorelai
Don't blame it on the good times: Naven
Blame it on the boogie: Yoomtah (probs gonna be yoom and naven roller disco-ing it up)
(Then for the second half the chorus, it'd go Phoenica, Trixie, Rick, then Molly. I'm yet to design their outfits.)
So, more compelled to make a proper real-ass goddamned animatic than ever, I started with "I need to design their disco outfits!!!"
And then drew the most animation-unfriendly outfit for Lorelai like oh my god what was I thinking (I did a good job going off reference with it but.....fuck me man....) I also said fuck off to consistency, so that's why yoomtah and giovanni are basically the same height here lol
Anyways, the animatic would basically follow the beats of Prison of Plastic, but instead of getting into fairytale-esque fantasy beforehand, Lorelai listened to the Jackson 5 for two days straight like I did while I was drawing this. (I was in a call with a friend while drawing Giovanni, and I kept stopping his train of thought by singing "Blame it on the boogie~~~" lmao)
further thoughts:
Giovanni: most normal outfit here, since i drew him first. also looks the worst because of that. compared to the rest, he's very early-70s instead of the late 70s-80s look everyone else ended up with because they're neon bitches. he also ended up with his Banzai Blaster neck scarf as a Fred Jones-ass ascot because I make the rulez
Lorelai: I'm not afraid to say it, I fucking cooked with that dress. I went off of the photo reference there heavily (I wish google image search or fuckass Pinterest was better so I could know where that image is from but lo...) I zhuzhed the reflections to be more pastel yellow-purple to match her Hare-idan design for funsies. sad I couldn't incorporate more bunny elements in :(
Naven: I kept trying normal-70s brownish-greens for the suit pieces until I gave up and muted his normal palette. I am also so so proud of the shag and sunglasses, even though they're not that far from his normal hair and glasses. Also he and Yoomtah are in roller skates because of @euniearts's post that I have referenced on Yoomtah's individual screencap. They were both already in flares. They were made for the roller disco.
Yoomtah: I gave up a little here. Her color palette is intact because I ran out of good disco references and also, it's a killer color palette??? It's too good to change tbh. I tried to incorporate more of the yellow, too, but it just didn't work. It's not pictured, but I also referenced @clottedscream's many full-body drawings of yoomtah. I added the robot-seam-line thing she draws on her midriff. I love this robot gremlin teehee, I need to draw her more.
I also doodled some comics while I was doing these
1st: Giovanni in a Skirt (i felt bad putting him in pants but that's just the way the cookie crumbles...)
(me too, lorelai, me too. I'm such a sucker for feminine boys who aren't cookie-cutter femboys, so long-haired skirt-wearing giovanni critical hits me. also why did i draw her afro like peridot what)
Coming in to say i LOVE your EE headcanons and if you drew any of the Giovanni and Zora ones I would lay down my life /pos

I also like the idea that he also showed early signs of being chaotic good by fighting for other’s sakes even if it gets him in trouble.
Poor guy. Having parents that love him but not doing jack about all the crap he has to deal with at school or family. Being beaten up so badly that he wonders late into the night about getting a ghost friend instead and whether it’s possible he could become one minus the dying part.
And despite it all, he still grows up desiring a world where people practice more empathy with each other and take failure with more grace <333
I really love this hc of mine because it places a bunch of scenes in Epithet Erased under a new context and makes Gio’s character a lot more interesting through new lens.
I didn’t get to draw it here but I also have this idea of: Gio’s definition of the worst guy you could be being “acting like a good guy but actually doing VERY mean things.” To which yours truly has connected that with that’s exactly how Gio had viewed and labeled all the snotty class snitches, his teachers and the principal back in his school days >:((
