Assignment 8: Character Design (Key art) Tools: Clip studio paint, ipad Feedback: For this key art, I wanted to experiment with using poses and expressions to bring life to the character. I wanted to portray her resilient personality while struggling for survival in her world. Her expression and poses are meant to almost taunt the oppression and evilness in her society/world. Her eyes are the only part of her face that's not covered by her hands, almost showing her determination and lack of fear, while the covered portions represent her original identity that this world is trying to erase. Finally, she is supposed to be encased in this symbolic bubble, which refers back to the theme of control by the more dominant population in this universe, but also their morbid obsession with exoticism. I mainly planned for the key art to show more of her character and giving more depth to her as well, so I did have a clear vision for her purpose and certain ideas of poses or interactions. However, I found it hard to compose a background of this key art, mainly since I don't exactly have a fully fleshed out vision of the whole world/environmentally wise. I did an indoor and outdoor background/environment for my previous assignments, but I just felt like they didn't exactly fit with the poses and ideas that I was going for. So I made this key art more illustrative, which I wasn't completely satisfied with :/.

Assignment 8: Character Design

Tools: Clip studio paint, ipad Feedback: This was the character sheet I made of the protagonist of the world. She has two strands of kelp braided into her hair, representing and reminding her of her origins. Her clothes are mostly tattered and very worn-out, symbolizing her current living situations and her place in this universe. These poses and expressions gives more explanation and depth to her character. For example, the pose on the left, she's slightly amused/annoyed at her friends/family (kinda like when your younger siblings annoy you), while the middle pose shows more of the character in her neutral state when alone, relaxed and daydreaming/staring off into space. Meanwhile the pose on the right shows a more adventurous and free-spirited side of her. I enjoyed the process of this assignment, and I was able to further develop her character during this process as well.

Assignment 10: Painting the Polygons Itch.io link: https://celinez00.itch.io/painting-the-polygon Tools: Clip studio paint, unity Feedback: It was definitely a fun experience making textures to be turned into a 3D object. I made a can of "Mer-food", similar to canned food in our world, and a glass container with a narwhal figure (reference to one of my earlier assignments). However, I feel like aspects of the texture didn't translate as well onto the actual model itself, especially the label for the Mer-food/can. Also, I had a hard time making the glass case look transparent and glass like.

Description: The protagonist character situated in front of her dwelling, admiring the phantom on a narwhal in the pond near her backyard.

Feedback: I tried making her dwelling/house look more run down, due to her place in this story, surviving by the day. Her house is covered with moss, and her garden is overgrown and is more attuned to the environment. I tried to make the colors follow this blue/greenish palette to reaffirm her identity as a mer-person. The narwhal is a subtle reference to my previous world building assignments.

For the process of this assignment, I think I struggled a lot on the composition/placement of the sprites in the background, and trying to recreate that 2.5D top down game look/feel. I struggled a lot on the perspective, and I feel like the placement of the pond and the interaction of the character feels like it blended more into the midground than the foreground.

Assignment 8: Character design Tools: Clip Studio Paint, ipad Description:

A half mer creature from the deep sea region, born as a pure merfolk, but due to the more evolved humanoid species, the merfolks are forced to take a shot to become half-humanoid, to integrate into their ideal society. Now living at the outer border of the city of the humanoids, far from the bustling city center with her parents and 2 older sisters. Her outer appearance is more representative of her eccentric personality, liking to collect antiques and bones, as shown by her hand crafted ribbed corset and skirt decor. She is also decorated with signature merfolk attributes: frilled ears, fish tail, webbed feet and hands with sharp claws. Feedback: I feel like designing a character from your own made up world is harder than I thought it would be. Mostly because I have an overall world established but there's still so much ideas and concepts in the air and not concrete, so it felt like I had so many different ways that I want to portray my character and represent the world, or the backstory/lore.

Assignment 7: Environmental design pt.2 Tools: Clip Studio Paint, ipad Description: It takes place in another universe where mystical creatures reside in, and this perspective is a part of a huge open area that resembles a large library/spell room. Instead of staircases like the concept from last week, I replaced it with an eel that serves the same purpose. The glass windows shows a glimpse to the outside underwater world. And the narwhal is there to serve as a grim reminder of the society this world resides in. Feedback: I wanted to add on to my concept from last week, especially adding more otherworldly elements to it, which is why I replaced the original spiral staircase. This bridges the gap of the room being understood for its purpose, the intimidation of how big, open, and filled with knowledge and all things unknown it in.

Sketchbook assignment 8: Concept sketch of props Prop: Encased narwhal-esque aquatic creature These two versions tells two different narratives of the world. The one on the left represents the encapsulation of an unique creature, displaying it as a symbol of status and the rarity of the creature. This take shows a more arrogant narrative of the world, where anything that's deemed as 'perfect' or 'precious' is locked up, a display to show what true perfection looks like, how unattainable it is no matter what you do. Meanwhile, the right concept symbolizes a crueler take on the world. The same narwhal creature is torn apart and reattached together by metal joints. It shows the greed of the people and how excitedly they are to get their hands on something rare and fascinating, and rip it apart to satisfy their own curiosities, before attempting to piece it back together to excuse their actions.

Assignment 7: Environment design

Tools: Clip Studio Paint, Floor Plan Creator Description: The two point of views are of an interior space, both resembling a cozy office but with outlandish elements, i.e., the shell portal, corpse of a narwhal. There's also a floor plan/map that shows all the elements of the whole room. Same with the perspectives that I took a screenshot from the 3D floorplan that I made. For the reference board, the main elements/themes are water, since my world is based mostly in the underwater world, with some interiors (this env design) including elements of water. I also have references of caves, which I took inspiration for the shell-like portal. The vibe that I wanted to go for with the interior is also like a cozy, bookworm-esque office, but this is only a guise/facade to the darker themes of this world. Feedback: I think the part that I struggled the most is showing my intentions and backstory into an environmental design. Not only that, but also how to make the details and elements in the environment seem intuitive where the viewer can theorize and understand the intentions behind the design. I think right now, it's a decent start, but I want to further improve/add more details into the design, add more elements to further develop my theme and make it really feel like it's a natural part of my story world. Also, I would like to tweak the portal cave to make it seem less distinctive and sticking out from the rest of the interior.

Sketchbook week 7: Logo

This logo is also related to the environmental sketch that I've done this week, where the shell and the narwhal is present. It's a symbol/representing the repression (narwhal displayed in a case in the environment) while the shell symbolizes a false sense of security and manipulation (the shell is seen as a portal in the env.)

Week 6: Making many from few

Objects used: Cats (orange, gray, and white), chair-related objects (couch, chair, beanbag), and expressions (sleepy, love, and speaking(meowing))

Description:

For this week's assignment, I made variations of cat related activities with chairs and expression markers. I had transformed the cats to display different actions/positions with according expression marks to express a scene/action. For example, there are cats that are stretching and interacting in various ways with the different furniture. There are also cats that are flopping over and draping themselves over the furniture as well, with varying expressions.

Self evaluation/feedback:

I liked this week's assignment a lot, it's fun to experiment with a limited amount of sprites but still create something unique and each expressing its own personalities. However, I did realize in the middle of the process that the objects that I chose for myself seem quite limited, as they aren't exactly abstract and can't be used in abstract ways.

Assignment 5: Patterns from Particles The particle system is portraying a reaction where someone is thinking, and suddenly they get a brilliant idea. Particle sprite #1 (5-pointed star): act of thinking Particle sprite #2 (pointy spikes): sudden realization/idea formation, the aha! moment Particle sprite #3 (4-pointed star): the emotional satisfaction of said idea/thought Feedback: For this assignment, the action that I was trying to portray was the emotional process/stages of suddenly thinking of an idea, similarly to the lightbulb idea. I used small stars that kind of float around, going from the motion of spreading out and then moving back in to represent 'thinking'. Then, I used the spikes to represent the sudden idea popping into someone's head, signifying an emotion of excitement. Then lastly, the sparkles is the end result of this process, a sign of satisfaction and the feeling of proudness. I personally enjoyed this assignment, it's fun to mess around with the particle systems in unity. I found it fascinating how the speed and the spread of the particle sprites can embody a different feeling. However, I did struggle a bit on building the system itself, there are just some aspects of the animation that I wasn't able to apply to the degree that I wanted to. This is my first time using the particle system, so I think it comes with the learning curve, and just needing more practice with how each setting in unity works. #05Particles

Sketchbook week 5: sketch of container/package meant to sell/purchase the element of earth.

The element that I chose was earth, and I was heavily inspired and based off my packaging from a log of wood, and in the shape of a pencil. that you can open up by peeling off the layer of the bark, remove it from the bottom metal holder, open the top of the container (the swirly part), and inside contains the earth element.

Assignment 4: Pixelizing Monstrosities

Based off of last week's sketchbook creature, a croissant-shelled hermit crab. Reflection: I think for this week's assignment, it was an interesting process having to work from the most simplified version of an artwork, and slowly for each version, given more freedom to add details. It was definitely hard for the first two versions, having to sculpt the shape with such little amount of pixels, but still be able to make the object represent (somewhat) of its original form. For the first edition, it was a bit difficult due to the complex shape of the character, and the limitation of color and values had to be used to give the simple shapes more dimension. Even with the later versions with more colors and bigger canvas, it still felt limiting. With the final full colored and biggest canvas, it was satisfying to have autonomy over the color range and more canvas room to work on, but I realized that I had to be more aware of how pixel art is different from regular digital art, in the way that the way that it is applied is way different, (not really sure how to describe it) but sometimes details can be more distracting and look crowded.
