On the flip side, when you are from Old Japan, everyone else looks like they’re wearing foreign fashion – and for all the differences between 1577 and 2003, even clothes from the same region might as well be foreign anyway. Sakichi had returned to the fountain to continue his reading amid these unfamiliarly-clad passers-by, and found himself looking up every so often to squint above the reflections of the light off the fountain’s spray and people-watch for a minute or so. It was then that he first saw the dynamic duo, one walking in front of the other.
Were those two… attached to each other? was his first thought, and he leaned over slightly to get a better view while they were still reasonably far off. It seemed that the lead of the two had already caught sight of him as well, though, so he hurriedly lowered his head again to his book.
After a moment they approached enough so that he could hear them speaking, though at first the words were so unfamiliar that he missed the first half of Light’s sentence amidst terms with likely more letters than he knew what to do with. He did catch the last part, though, looking back up at the speaker. “No, I didn’t. It’s merely a nice spot. You did, then?” Up until this point, Sakichi had been refusing to let his eyes wander to the straggler behind him, but impulsively, his mouth formed words before his brain could stop it. “And why are you handcuffed together?”

Since the pair’s sudden awareness of their location within the strange city, L found himself realizing perhaps that his idea of being chained to Light in order to keep constant surveillance on him, did in fact actually have a number of 𝒇laws. Most of all, being connected to someone as surprisingly social as Light, meant that L also was expected to be as social. He could have unlocked the chain and cuffs, however, that would negate the whole purpose of his decision in the first place.
Going with the younger’s suggested idea of playing a mindless word game to pass the time, it was also nothing more than a 𝓭istraction as well; L was aware of this whether the other was as well or not.
❝Ecdemomania.❞ Giving Light an immediate answer, singed with sarcasm, L paid no mind to the fact that he was potentially speaking at the same time as the unique person he was near-dragged over to. Eyeing the person, they were certainly the type that was perhaps some kind of historical re-enactor, judging solely by the era in which their clothing fit in to. Or perhaps an avid fan of historic Japan– something like a history-otaku. There were plenty of things, ranging from innocent to not-so-much that the person at the fountain could be, however none of those were currently of any true concern to the detective.
Out of habit, his fingers found their way to his lips as the detective toyed with the idea of telling a stranger in a strange place any of the details pertaining to the Kira Case. Although, if he did not clear the reasoning, would Light talk too much trying to intimidate or impress the person? Or would the pair be labeled as some kind of perverts or perhaps escaped criminals since it was handcuffs holding the two together. ❝For a private police investigation.❞ Also not waiting to have the question pushed onto him by either, or for an invitation into the conversation between Light and the other.
Look, I know we are chained together, but that still didn’t -- Light tugged weakly at the chain to reprimand the other -- mean you can just butt into my conversations? Forget it, our word game is over.
“Archenemy-- Let’s just stop there, Ryuzaki.“ He sighed as he looked towards Sakichi, feeling a little troubled by his question. While Light was perfectly aware of how weird it was for two guys being chained together, even with reasonable explanation, he knew that there was no way for him to provide the questioner with anything of that sort. Touching upon the Kira subject and how they were related would be a bad idea.
“Well, personally... My wish is to be free of this monster chained to me.“ Was that a joke? Was that the truth? That was for him to know, Sakichi to guess, and for L to deduce.
He decided to laugh in order to light up the mood. “I know it’s weird, right? To see two guys like this?” Light raised his wrist to show the chain and make a point. “But I woke up like this... so there is not much I can do about that.”
Technically, that wasn’t a lie. He did wake up to find himself chained to L. He just left out the small detail that they had already been like this for quite some time before they came to Stella City.
“You said this is a nice spot, right? Are you familiar with this city?“
