K'in forces the compliment through clenched teeth. Standing on top a chair in their studio, staring through their camera. One eye squeezed shut as they click various frames of Astra with only minuscule change in angle.

From above the lights catch on the sparkly dusting on her eye lashes the the artificial glint in her murky eyes.

They click their tongue to the roof of their mouth, “Take a break.” They let the camera hang around their neck and drop down. Stare as she sheds the satin draping the clothing department had lent them for this shoot.

“Don't smudge your lips.” Tone dry and a bit harsh.

「 ― She doesn't understand why they're so... terse... with her. She hasn't done anything to them! It's not her fault she's been booked out to be doing this! Really -- but she does as she's told as soon as they tell her to. She's not a bad model. She can count how many photographers would give her anything to stand there and take photos but this one... is really, really frustrating her.

She lets them finish with that part of the shoot and she finds herself sitting on one of the stools, tilting her head back to look at the ceiling and take in a deep, calming breath.

"..." That last little remark is definitely going to get a response.

It doesn't take too long for her to stand in front of them, her head tilted up to meet their eyes. "I've been a perfect model this entire time. I haven't complained about the different positions, I've held myself well and you've been getting excellent shots." She lays it out to them one after the next.

"And now I feel as if you're frustrated by me when I've done nothing to you other than everything you've asked. Have I offended you? If I have, I apologize -- and I'll try to make sure it doesn't happen again." She can't remember saying very much to them other than a few nods and 'I understand's.

"... After, if you wanted, we could go out for dinner. My treat." As a way to make up for whatever she did. ― 」

They're shifting and tweaking with the lights and the props when she speaks. They don't stop as she lists, it won't do any good if they did. Their eyes are burning, the room smells of makeup and they haven't stopped staring at the placement of the chair their model was sitting on.

Appeasement is offered. K'in purses their lips as they turn to her. Rounding the arranged seats to the mini fridge in the corner. They can't say they've noticed themselves being any way out of their usual atittude.

It's the second day out of a five day shoot. Late Tuesday, dusk settling outside and they just know the air is crisp and cool. There's outfits not yet finalised and makeup looks not agreed upon.

“Don't overwhelm the model.”

They sniff.

“I'm within walking distance of a convenience store. I'll pass on the dinner.”

The water bottle in their hand is downed to half and they place the cork of it between their teeth, “Never said you did anything to apologise for but I appreciate the effort. I've gotten shots and you've been a model.”

The cork slips from their molars to the floor.

The fabric background of 'The Starry Night' shifts as they use their foot to slide away the trash and they pointedly glance at the short ottoman.

“Was your break satisfactory?”

They give her teeth this time. Concern out of not being labelled spoiled is something they'd never expect but they'd rather play nice then get a call tomorrow calling off the shoot. The half deposit is lovely and all but the full price is always better.

They're trying to keep a cool head. This is serious. Both of them being heated won't fix this. Vital is already raising his voice; their ears flatten over it.

This isn't a usual shouting match. He's shouted before. He's yelled but never at them. What they did, sure, but never at them. He isn't listening. How can he? He is so sure that this makes sense.

“That's not wha—” K’in tries to cut in. Their voice falls flat. He's never done that before. Look at them so..plainly. He's given them a cold look. He's stared at them without interest but he'd have something behind his eyes.

There isn't any now. His eyes were never that shiny, but they looked so bland now.

They're fed up. He isn't listening. He has no right. Is that what he thinks? That they're that self interested? They're conceited at times but never did they think they gave off the air of self-fulfilling.

“You're not listening. Can you hear me? Piece of shit- open your ears and listen to me. Don't just hear yourself talk.” The words come out rough. They can be angry now. He's detaching. They need to reach him somehow. At least attempt to talk in a language he understands.

“Vital.”

They start. Fists on his shoulders move to settle closer to his neck, almost cupping his throat. They've done that before. Held him. This is okay. They think. They're shaking.

“That's not what I'm trying to do. I'm trying to stop that from happening. I'm worried about us. I'm trying really hard to understand where this is coming from—”

Sentimal. Emotional. This probably isn't working. This isn't for him— this part isn't to soothe him. His comfort isn't a worry. He is uncomfortable . Nothing about this conversation is comfortable. K’in doubt he's have to argue over this before “— I cant understand if you keep runnin' from me.”

“I'm worried about you. The same I hounded you into eating just to watch you throw it up because you refused to tell me why you'd stare holes into my skull while I ate. In the same way, I make sure to bring you something to eat cause I know you wouldn't leave your desk otherwise.”

Their nails pinch into his skin. Their grip teetering on, too harsh. “Self sabotaging doesn't work with me. You tried that already. It didn't go the way you wanted. You got stuck with me.”

He's acting like he doesn't know this.

When Astra moves, K'in immediately mimics her. Slight twitch in their lip when she turns without acknowledgement. It was confusing them. Just half a month ago they were all smiles and laughs. Now she won't even peek at them.

They follow. Glancing back at their father to grimace in annoyance. It's directed to the situation rather than Astra. They find her in a corner. It's such a long hall, and she still seems to find a spot to isolate herself.

Their ears twitch. The sound of clicking is inconsistent, and they just know it must hurt. K'in huddles her into the crammed space by the wall.

She's taller, but somehow, she seems to curl into herself until she can hide behind their frame. Warm hands find hers. Pulling away her fingers until her nails stop digging into her skin and instead letting her nails dent theirs. It doesn’t last long; her grip softens on their skin.

She cares for them.

She loves them.

That makes her confession hit them a little harder.

A frown weighs their lips. Eyes squinting, teeth grinding. K'in already knows that Astra's Mom is bad. They've seen the bruises when they come visit. They have heard arguments when they've sneaked over on late nights.

K'in hums, “Breathe Starlight.” Hand on her nape, rubbing circles into the hair there.

“You're strong. I understand. We're gonna have to hide it. Just for a little while. I'll get you out of here. I promised you that.”

A late night promise— hushed and hurried whispering. Astra still hiccuping from who knows what her mother did. Her salty tears on K’in's lips as they promise to marry her and take her from here. She'll live with them.

“I keep my promises. I did all the times before; I'll keep this one, too.” They pull away, just enough. “Look at me. Do you hear me, Astra?”
