John will ask, "Did I do something wrong?" when Nik is in a Mood and unintentionally gets a little aggressive with him. The Russian had dropped a little gadget he was repairing, it shattered, wasted a good few hours of his week. Their cat pissed on a wall. The bread he'd purchased from a classy bakery 2 days ago had molded. Overall a shitty day.

His anger implodes on him with John's words, and he tries to mask it with suave mode. Dragging the Captain in for a hug, blanketing his face with kisses, Reassuring that he'd never get unreasonably mad at him, he loves him too much for that.

He'd taken the bait nicely.

Now it's easy to sweet-talk him into bed early, convince him that he would like to watch one of the man's favorite shows (he's seen it before, not really his cup of tea). John leaves momentarily to grab a light snack, saving space for him to cook later, and returns to strip and jump back in bed. He tugs Nik onto his fuzzy chest, ignoring his comments of "needing to sweep up the mess downstairs", and waits for those creaky breaths he hears every night. That gives the green light to start planning a short trip to the lake in a couple days, and jot down ingredients for their dinner.

John has learned how to dissipate his and Nik's despondence before it festers. They're both unhealthily good at masking their feelings, but he can look through the cracks and help in taking it off before it breaks. Sometimes it takes a little trickery, though. But it's always for their own good.
