you let him pick.
he doesn't give you details in the text. just a time - 7:30 - and the place - his.
you know that he doesn't get off work until 7, assuming that everything's gone perfectly. so you wait until 7:15 to send him the on my way text.
you're surprised when he texts back almost immediately - can't wait to see you.
he buzzes you up to his apartment when you arrive. it smells like your favorite Thai restaurant when you walk in. he ordered take-out - quicker, and more efficient than him trying to cook anything.
(the last time he tried to cook a date-night dinner after his shift, he forgot about the oven being on. you almost had to call the fire department.)
when you shrug off your jacket and put your bag down, he kisses you. quick, like a habit he doesn't want to forget about. you tilt towards him like he's sunshine.
when you ask what he's got planned for the night, he turns shy. in that sweet, boy-ish way that makes your stomach flutter. he shrugs. says come to the kitchen. and you follow.
the kitchen table has take-out boxes on itāenough for the two of you plus four of your friends, if you wanted to. all of your favorites. the spring rolls he likes. but thenā
craft supplies? in small containers. organized so carefully that it makes your eyebrows raise. you step closer and you see it: cords of thin elastic. and alphabet beads. and beads that are just cute.
your head tilts, questioning. because you wouldn't place arts-and-crafts together in a sentence with doctor frank langdon under most circumstances.
but you remember. you never asked, but you remember that there was a time when frank's wrists weren't so bare.
you don't comment. so he fills the silenceā
"i thought it would be fun."
and even though frank is a made of firm decisions and steady hands, his statement still sounds like a question. like he's worried that he's misread you.
your heart tugs to quell the uncertainty. a smile flickers on your lipsāgenuine, because yes, this is doctor frank langdon, but more importantly, it's frank.
frank, who knows your favorite take-out order. who rearranges the kitchen table after a twelve-hour shift. who lights candles that are soft enough that they don't give you a headache. who has beads sorted by color and importance. who's looking at you like he wants you to say yes and mean it.
instead of saying yes, or let me see what you have, or anything, you move to take your seat. like a practiced dance. like you've done it for a hundred nights and you'd do it for a hundred more.
you give him a look that says i'm waiting for you.
and he follows.
sinks down into his own chair. pushes a can of your fizzy drink of choice across the table. you pop the tab, and he opens the styrofoam container of his white rice. steam rises up, and the comfortable ease of existing in frank's kitchen falls into place.
you trade a forkful of noodles for a taste of his massaman curry. you blink away tears at the spice level he ordered; he carefully wipes them away with the knuckle of his hand, precision required to not introduce more spice.
you don't flinch. not even a little.
when you push away what's left of your plate, completely full and sated, you begin to examine the array of tiny bead containers that dance around the ramekins of extra sauce and unopened fortune cookies.
a collection of tiny, colorful flowers. hearts. smiley faces.
you don't like to pry.
you believe that frank will be open when he's most comfortable. he always has been. has always wanted to be.
you bite your tongue when you want to ask him what his plan is. you pivot, instead, to grabbing the container that has slots of letters. you can feel frank's attention on you as you concentrate on picking out letters in the correct order.
L O V E R B O Y
you look up in time to see pink dance across his cheeks. you grin, pleased to have caught him off guard. to know that he was curious enough to read the words from an upside-down perspective.
"what?" you ask. innocent. sincere.
and he laughs. takes the elastic so that he has something to do with his hands, turning the spool by quarters. "nothing," he replies. then, "hold out your wrist."
you comply. he measures. then cuts.
frank places the lengths of elastic thread on his side of the table, then hands the spool over to you. he holds out his wrist without you needing to ask.
you measure, then cut.
by the time you pile the elastic on your side, frank is already at work, fishing beads out into neat lines.
you see him select an L, then an O, a V, and it doesn't take much of an imagination to see what he's going for.
the rest of the night passes by with quiet sounds of beads rattling against plastic boxes. soft conversation that drifts between work and real life. laughter at the word combinations you make then discard.
by the time the candles have burnt out, and your eyes are heavy with sleep, and you're not sure how frank is still hanging on, you both have an impressive pile of bracelets.
a string of flowers with a single sun. hearts that are separated between X's and O's. his name. your name. LOVERBOY. LOVERGIRL.
you're not sure how much either one of you will wear the bracexlets. the clinking sounds are a lot. the idea of one of his elastic bands popping in the middle of an emergency makes you cringe.
but for the time being, both of your wrists are full, and colorful. the beads are safe. the leftover Thai food sits in his refrigerator.
and you're glad that you let frank langdon pick date night.
to be angry and upset at things irrationally. to be exhausted beyond belief. to not want to talk to anyone. to put yourself first just a little even if only on the insides
you are not an eternal giving fountain, and your f/o sees this. they do not expect you to give and give and give and fix and fix and fix until your heart bleeds dry, even if you really do want to help.
they understand that heavy, bottom of your stomach guilt when you find yourself getting tense in the jaw dealing with other people. they donāt want you to run from that, sit in it by their side and let them lull you to sleep.
they know youāre not really angry, youāre just tired and itās manifesting as this blue hot anger in your chest. they will don every fireproof suit in the universe to be next to your blaze in this moment.
your f/o knows you cannot fix everyone you want to, help everyone you want to, without helping yourself too.
and sometimes helping yourself is a bit selfish. but let it be.
your f/o is there, pinkies linked, the whole time. š
The last 4 weeks have been⦠a toll. Iām sorry Iāve not been active, I feel like Iām juggling everyone in my life while standing one legged on a tight rope. Back soon with more imagines Iām sure but I needed this one badly.
the bravest souls in fan spaces are the people who selfship with a character that already has a wildly popular ship in the fandom. you looked at a tidal wave of fan meta and fics all pairing your fav with another popular character and said okay. but what if i was the one kissing them instead? extremely powerful aura.
Itās so hard loving a complex fictional woman because assholes will try to turn you against her by listing off all her flaws and itās like yeah no shit, thatās the whole point. What arenāt you getting about this?
heās so cutie pie i know he makes playlists for us with all sorts of different music and asks what the vibe is :) he untangles the earphones and pushes my hair off my neck so i can put one in :)
and!! i know heās so overprotective on public transport too always holding my hand or thigh hhgghghhhā¦. pulls me so close iām almost on his lap bc he doesnāt want anyone else too close to me :(
heās mouthing the words and humming along and tapping my leg or arm to the beat (steve who stims by touching me >>>>>)
and when itās time to get off the train heās gently pulling it out of my ear and givin me a lil kissie on the cheek bc he loves me :3
