Blessed thread
I’ve been getting a lot of asks and replies questioning who is Mano Aloe or what happened to her and, while other people have already covered the topic, I’ll try to simplify things as much as possible.
Mano Aloe was a vtuber who debuted on 08/15/2020 as part of the 5th generation of Hololive, a division from Cover corp. Before being hired and becoming Mano Aloe, she used to stream on TwitCasting under another identity, and people not only were able to connect the two identities, but found out that before debuting on Hololive she made a private stream on twitcasting where she tested her Hololive Live2D avatar (and you can see it in the video’s thumbnail). She was authorized to do so by her Hololive manager but forgot to delete the video, and no one from the company checked if she deleted either – all of this could have been avoided if the company provided another account or way to test her avatar, but Cover corp is notorious for this sort of amateurish mistakes. So far this was just a minor leak and “breach of contract” that wouldn’t really after her or Hololive much, but people started digging into her twistcasting streams.
They quickly found a stream from 2019, way before she was hired by Hololive, where she talked about some unnamed company (unlikely to be Nijisanji or Hololive), where she would perhaps work, and how harsh and restrictive they were, and then started to mention these aspects in the vtuber industry as a whole. Eventually she claimed to be an acquaintance of Kudo Chitose, a Nijisanji vtuber who had previously retired, and claimed that the reason she gave for her retirement was just something that she came with along with the Nijisanji staff, and that the real reason was that her personal information and real face had been leaked and she was scared of stalking and other issues in case she continued to be a Nijisanji vtuber (and at least the part about her personal info being leaked has been confirmed).
Anyway, here’s where the Idol Culture Brainrot truly starts: part of the japanese community (specially in 5ch) got unreasonably mad at her for talking about an unrelated vtuber from a company she was never part of, with many assuming she was straight up lying or just spreading unfounded rumors. She got doxxed and harassed, both online and through people contacting her phone directly, and the phone of an ex-boyfriend. Her few Hololive videos were getting massive dislikes and angry japanese comments, even an apology video she made, and she was suspended from posting videos for two weeks with Cover using her avatar leak as the justification – most likely a poor (and late) attempt at damage control, hoping things would calm down in 2 weeks so she could start streaming again. Either way it didn’t work, she continued to be harassed and having old comments on social media “exposed” and criticized by the worst part of the (already bad) vtuber fan community.
She was supposed to return to her activities on 08/31, in Japan’s time, and a lot was done by fans to welcome her back, but what we got instead was an official statement from Cover corp that Mano Aloe claimed she was no longer physically or mentally prepared to continue, and so she decided to retire instead, basically ending her career before it even started, with the harassment most likely compromising her mental health as well. Her friends from the 5th gen suspended their activities for the day and did a little stream, clearly heartbroken, where they commented the situation briefly.
This whole situation just exposed once again the worst aspects of idol culture, obsessed fans, the dangers of having personal info public online, and how amateurish mistakes by companies like Cover can affect the talents they are supposed to protect. Hopefully the person behind Mano Aloe is safe and can remain in contact with the friends she made in this short time at Hololive, I wish her the best and she needs all the support she can get from those still in contact with her, but the sad truth is that her dream was ruined and she will probably never return as this character or in Hololive, and I’m just hoping she can one day come back under another identity, working either solo or for a company that won’t fail her like this.
