Space FLT: Somehow we got Treflip101 on the phone and he gave us some insight to what he’s currently working on. This is how it went down.
Treflip101: Okay, so back in high school me and a friend of mine.. (Nolan Kari dye. Aka Kid Kapri) used to have little freestyle cyphers, nothing serious, just for fun. But we did in fact record some songs on our phones back in 2011. That and various mess arounds with my cousins back when we were little. We're all a little piece of the rap pie if you will. But as of 2016... I've been thrown into a new world of rap, due to the fact that my friend/ mentor/ artist I always looked up too, took me under his wing, and showed me a thing or two on his laptop a couple times. Still nothing I would take too serious because I figured, "this dude is amazing, he's been rapping forever, he and his bestfriend have their own rap group (t$vfog) and would probably take me as a joke.
SF: So they really motivated you?
TF101: OLDMANAV aka AV aka Anthony Michael Avila, was this big brother figure to me in the world of rap. He’s someone who has had the most faith in me regardless of the fact that he only really knew me as a skateboarder and an avid listener of his and Tsvfog's music.
One day he had time and invited me over to record a song I had written. ( OLDMAN never did features with anyone....) But the first day I went over, he offered to get on that song I wrote with me. So we did that, on a beat that I was given by @burgeronthebeat. Shouts out burger for that straight up.
So AV got on the song, and sent it to Ian Alexander (the other half of Tsvfog) and I figured, wow... I made an actual song,(entitled "crayon" named by AV ) and with this dude that I look up too so much! I was stoked.
But of course... The devil is always in the works. The file got deleted or lost somewhere along the line.. And I've never heard that song since sometime around January this year.
Time went by, and I actually had been invited back to AVs house to record a short EP with him entitled "IDK UMMM LEMME THINK" which is also on my soundcloud. Anthony had so much hope and was soo sure that I could make it in the rap world. He told me "wherever I(he) go in this rap game, I'm taking you with me". He gave me the most motivation, and even then I said to myself, “well he's being nice, I know I'm not all that, because I didn't take rap seriously at all. I still use it as just an outlet to speak on dumb things and make people laugh.
But then came April 22, 2016....................................... Aside from the day I watched my mother get arrested at age 5, the saddest day of my life. I got a call from AVs cousin saying that AV was supposed to call his grandma, but hadn't talked to anyone in a day or so... I remember taking the trash out and saying to myself jokingly.. "Eh he's probably fine, he never answers his phone anyway,..... Either that or he's left this stupid earth and is in no pain".
I received another call around an hour later where I was informed that he passed away the night of. And was found deceased in his bed. Broken to say the least is how I felt, and still feel when I think of the times we spent, and hell, I saw him two days before when I shot the music video for him called "44". Anyway, there's a lot more significant little twists to this story... But long story short is that in his death, and the goodbye he gave me the last time I saw him as if to say "in case I don't see you again" was enough for me to know that I had to keep this going for him. I owe that to him. And that, is the reason I started rapping. OLDMANAV forever.
SF: Man, that’s real. RIP forreal. So what projects you got for them?
TF101: Sellin’ shirts. It was inspired by me being at home bored, I liked a song called "sellin" by ilovemakonnen, it's basically a terrible freestyle that is basically my song, but about sellin dope. So I tried to do a positive/ fun approach to it. It was originally way shorter. About half as long as it is now, but I was approached by one of AVs old producers, and he offered to remake the beat for me and master it. And it became the 3:16 second song it is today. Shout out jvalleyonthetrack 🏻. But yeah... It was a joke originally.
SF: So you’re really out here sellin’ shirts?
TF101: I'm actually out here sellin shirts. Started that this year as well, 2016 has been what people would call "my year". I've been hustling left and right. What, with my knee surgery back in March I had plenty of time to actually think about what moves to make and how to get them going. I've had certain mentors along the way. A great help to me was Jonathan ESTILO of @estilo_apparel, so shout out to the people making it possible for me. But yeah I came up with a design or sailor moon chillin on a Beamer e90, and that was the design I went with. Recently stopped that design though, so as not to get sued if I do blow up one day.
SF: Haha, that makes sense. So what’s next for Treflip101?
TF101:What to expect next, like I said, this isn't for me, this is all for my road dog @lightskinnednigga_ (OLDMANAV). He's watching from above, and as long as he's in my audience you can look forward to everything. New clothes, new music, new visuals, and I'm gonna get into directing short films soon, so let's see where this shitty thing called life takes me. But if you really want to know what's coming out next. "Niggaz don't know" that's all you NEED to know.
