Iverson has no idea what the hell is going on.

Seriously, no joke.

His best pilot graduate and his best (albeit insubordinate) fighter pilot cadet are at the Kerberos launch. Together. Shirogane is leading Kogane around, touching his arm, pointing stuff out. Kogane is following him, standing close by, arms crossed but attention centered. They’re smiling at each other, blushing. Kogane isn’t being a huge pain in the ass.

Iverson has no idea what’s going on. In the distance, he hears Holt Junior wailing something about photobombing, but he’s learned to ignore Holt Junior when he isn’t yapping about science.

Something is wrong. Iverson can feel it in his bones. Shirogane and Kogane are hugging. He didn’t even know Kogane was capable of human touch without reeling like an angered cat. He’s willingly giving Shirogane affection. Shirogane is actually getting affection. From Kogane. Iverson briefly wonders if he’s finally had a stroke and is now dreaming.

Really, though, something is wrong. He can FEEL it as Kogane and Shirogane pull away and smile softly at each other. Iverson has half a mind to do some snooping into what is clearly a officer-cadet relationship (never mind that they are both adults), but that’s not what’s bothering him.

Kogane has always given him issues, but there’s something about his body language Iverson truly doesn’t like. He doesn’t know for sure what, though, and he ends up letting it go after the launch ends, shooting Shirogane into space and far, far, far away from Kogane, who’s still standing with crossed arms and a pining expression.

It isn’t until Kerberos goes wrong, Kogane is expelled, and Shirogane miraculously returns and Iverson gets his lights knocked out that by Kogane that, in his last fleeting seconds of consciousness, he realizes what it was that bothered him so much:

Kogane is a fucking demon who’s head over heels for his superior officer. Oh, god, he can already see the wedding…

Galra meta babbling

SO TO START WITH: Galra at least heavily leaning carnivore is a preeettty safe bet, with the teeth, claws, etc.; which means we’re looking at some really different paths for evolution of social behavior from humans.

I know we all hear humans listed as apex predators - that’s a food chain ecological role that’s oversimplified, not behavior and diet; humans are trooping omnivores that happen to’ve reached a point where not much actively hunts them.  Trooping omnivores tend to be in large groups that rely on foraging and gathering as much as hunting, will basically take whatever they can get, and have a large-group communal living space.

Now there’s a thing in the theory side that I’m gonna start with: Anything that builds a civilization has to have social ancestry.  This is important because if the evolutionary ancestry wasn’t social enough for things like complex communication to be an advantage, then there’d be no reason for it to develop.  Social species have some basic generalities and have to have “pro-social behavior” and social instincts/behaviors - which, contrary to all the media that wants to quote outdated social darwinism, includes things like empathy, social bonding, and altruistic behavior as evolutionary advantages, because some form of “I look out for the others in my group and they look out for me and we share resources” increases the survival rate of the whole group, which means the survival odds when things go south are greater.  Rats prefer to free a trapped rat over getting food for themselves, and will set aside a share of food for the trapped rat if they can’t do it immediately, etc.

How social behavior evolves varies a LOT however, depending on why the whole social thing is helping them survive.  One of the big factors with carnivores is that carnivores need a lot more resources and usually more territory than omnivores and herbivores to sustain themselves reliably, so when you look at terrestrial social carnivores, there’s two basic models so far.  One of them relies on factors that allow for large populations in small spaces as a prerequisite, and the one warmblooded terrestrial species that has it is housecats, who got “overabundant prey in small area” because of humans.

So, assuming Galra were the sapient species, they probably didn’t have some convenient other species setting up scenarios where they’d have artificial large prey populations, which leaves us with the other model - which’s basically pack/pride predators like wolves, lions, and hyenas.

Pack/pride predators work in small, incredibly close knit social groups that spread out across territories.  Survival and success depends on the group having enough space to not overhunt, and being VERY GOOD at cooperating and coordinating, which takes very intense and close social bonds within the group.  If the group is getting into pointless fights and NOT close-knit and coordinating well, nobody eats, and they starve; close social ties are a matter of survival.  Outsiders are a little more dicey, and young adults that left their existing group seeking mates/other territories/whatever will often hang around the edges of the territories of other groups until they either get accepted into a group, or manage to band together with other young adults and stake out their own territory.    

(Disclaimer here: The thing about wolf packs having “dominant alphas” that keep position by conflict and in fighting was based on one study where they took a bunch of random adolescent wolves from different places and threw them in a pen.  It’s the equivalent of a bunch of human teenagers from different nations and cultures with no familiarity prior being kidnapped and locked in a house.  Study of wild wolf packs found REALLY different dynamics and that most of the behavior shown in the “ALPHA MALE” study was ... the sort of thing wolves do when they can’t retreat from a confrontation with an unfamiliar wolf.)  

So basically, the Galra equivalent of early humans were probably pack hunters that developed complicated consistent tool use, language, and abstract concepts, then went from there coming up with new ideas and new ways to solve problems and make things to improve on their surroundings, likely living in much smaller individual groups than early humans, more spread out.  

And you’re probably looking at something where the path of least resistance socially is very close knit small groups with incredibly close bonds, and .... a lot of “unfamiliar = dangerous and something to be suspicious of”.

Of course when you get into cultural development, you end up with a lot of things that mitigate and alter that, since a lot gets learned and channeled through ideologies, belief systems, and societal norms - things that develop over periods of time as people come up with ideas, share them, and work out rule systems and morality systems to keep their society together and functioning, at least hypothetically.  

The fun part is that for one, this actually would be at least a lampshade on one thing with the Galra (I know robot minions is partly a narrative conceit to manage the on-screen body count, but bear with me) and a reason for another.

Heavy emphasis on robots?  That isn’t just the current Empire, that was there before, when they were cooperating with all of the others. For one, it’s something that’d really help with the resource problems and make it easier to avoid overtaxing food sources with population density while developing industry, which would also be an issue on restricted-space starships.  For two, if the tendency is “comfortable personal space bubble with unfamiliar individuals is MUCH LARGER and there’s a Need for living space that isn’t crowded constantly with unfamiliar people”, it gives a kludge around that to avoid the other problem with population density in starships and restricted spaces.  

(For what it’s worth, there is a human parallel - there’s a lot of public space design, especially in urban areas, even down to things like waiting rooms that’s meant to make it easier to choose or predict interaction, to mitigate some of the stress of crowding and the energy drain of unexpected/unwanted interaction.  Factor in something where there’s reason for a bigger personal space bubble in public and more strain from unexpected and/or unwanted constant social contact, and using machines for a lot as soon as that’s a possible option becomes a pretty rational solution.)  

The other one is the tendency to focus on discipline and structure.  The Empire’s taken it to an incredibly toxic extreme, but it’s there in the Blade of Marmora as well, and is probably a requirement for any time there’s a lot of Galra in a given space or working on a given goal; it’s a lot easier to get around reflexes to be uncomfortable with unfamiliar individuals of there’s at least a set of ground rules and patterns of engagement with an understanding of common goals that everyone can follow regardless of whether or not they know each other, and giving something for a shared sense of identity to mitigate the “who the fuck is this” when dealing with people outside of the ones someone is familiar and close with doesn’t hurt, either.  Self-discipline as a virtue means self-control and working on when it’s appropriate to act on strong reactions for social ties or “I don’t know you and you’re in my space” and when you need to sit on it.  

And as far as close ties go, loyalty definitely seems to be something that’s a very strong value with all the Galra.

Also Keith’s abandonment and trust issues are stupid common in kids that went through foster system or unstable childhood situations..... and wouldn’t be helped by essentially pack-predator instincts nobody knew about to teach him how to handle.  (Also “when someone does get close, social ties are REALLY INTENSE AND MAJORLY IMPORTANT” - gee I wonder who that sounds like here...)

its so refreshing to see other people acknowledging how *young* shiro is. i feel like, there's a tendency in the vld fandom to view "adult" characters as a homogenous group, as though everyone over the age of 20 suddenly has their shit together (maybe this is because the fandom is quite young, on average). there seems to be little distinguishment between an adult such as coran and an adult such as shiro, when in reality these two would be in very different stages of their lives.

I think this is actually a common attitude you see sneaking around in a lot of stories, where, you are either a teenager or younger, or you’re an Ancient, Sage Mentor, and, as a result, it creates a lot of weirdness.

On the one hand, you have a problem that I think the Sonic series is awful for, where character ages feel like really arbitrary weird numbers. Yes, no two people are the same or develop at the same rate but Tails does not act like an eight-year-old. Why is Rouge, a government-contracted espionage agent that owns her own club on the side, eighteen? You can’t wave your hands and say every single person in your setting is a prodigy, here.

Often coming hand and hand with this, though, is the idea that anyone older than twenty is a sage, veteran adult who is also forcibly shuffled out of the plot and out of importance, because a great message to tell people is if they don’t have their magical life-changing adventure while they’re still a teenager or younger, their life is over.

The thing about VLD is… these people are young. And nobody really wants them to be there. There’s a reason Coran is so worried about these people’s welfare- he’s six hundred years old, which, developmentally, for Alteans, seems to put him in somewhere like his mid-fifties. He looks at the paladins, all of them, and sees… kids.

But the reality of this situation is the empire doesn’t care if their enemies, and these kids have a better shot armed and fighting than they do sitting there waiting for the empire to come after them.

That said, the empire itself seems to normally hesitate at employing young people themselves- at bare minimum the commanding elite appears to consist entirely of… the actual age range you would expect of military commanders. They’re all middle-aged and older, and this is considered normal. Lotor is an exception, but Lotor is in a uniquely abusive situation- Zarkon’s not going to permit his son to have a normal childhood, and Throk even calls Lotor a “brat” and cites it as a reason Lotor’s unfit to lead, and shouldn’t be doing this- “Why is he not at his father’s bedside?”

So even the empire- while Haxus claims and later opponents not even hesitating at Pidge or the other paladins supports that they don’t care if their enemies are young- for their own people, do have age standards. And by those standards, Lotor is young, the paladins are young, Pidge, at fifteen, is “a child”. Hell, this applies even to other organizations: with the rebels, Captain Olia seems young, but Ozar and Te-Osh seem older, and having a handful of youthful prodigy characters out of a much larger organization is a lot more realistic than “nobody here is old enough to buy a drink in the US.”

Kolivan would seem to be an old man, suggesting he’s spent most of his life working to his position as leader of the Blade.

By the Garrison’s standards, Shiro is not the kind of person who should be leading missions- he was on Kerberos under Commander Holt, who was a far older man. If everything else hadn’t happened, he might’ve moved up into the commanding ranks of the Garrison…. by the time he was forty.

TL;DR I think popular media has desensitized us to the concept of prodigies and given us really weird standards about what we think is a “reasonable” age so I’m not all that surprised people misconstrue Shiro as a Wise, Sagacious Veteran and not a young adult.

One thing that bothers me with fanon is when people dumb Keith down. Like, this is a kid who was considered the best pilot of his generation at a military/space place; NASA's people are some of the smartest on the planet and the Garrison is so similar to them! But yet everyone think's he's not as smart as some of the other characters simply because he's more aggressive or because he didn't get the team chant Lance made.

LISTEN I LITERALLY SUFFER THROUGH “INTRO” TO ASTRONOMY AND ALL THE MATHING I MUST DO BECAUSE I CANNOT MATH AND!! KEITH WAS TOP OF HIS CLASS AT SPACE SCHOOL THAT BOY CAN MATH AND HE’S DAMN GOOD AT IT 

So he’s definitely book smart in my mind because I feel it would be difficult for him to be number one in such a prestigious academy otherwise. Particularly in its most competitive program (fighter pilot). There are of course other indications of intelligence, and the primary ones singled out are usually: musical-rhythmic and harmonic, visual spatial, verbal-linguistic, logical-mathematical, bodily-kinesthetic, interpersonal, intrapersonal, and naturalistic. So, let’s take a look at what Keith falls under:

Visual-spatial:  “Think in terms of physical space, as do architects and sailors. Very aware of their environments. They like to draw, do jigsaw puzzles, read maps, daydream. They can be taught through drawings, verbal and physical imagery. Tools include models, graphics, charts, photographs, drawings, 3-D modeling, video, videoconferencing, television, multimedia, texts with pictures/charts/graphs.” (source)

Evidence: Just take a look at Keith’s incredibly all encompassing and thorough assessment of data he’s gathered from the desert and this is incredibly clear. You’ll see pictures, charts, maps, visually illustrated points of how everything connects–it’s clear he’s a very visual learner. To the point where, when Hunk sketches out the Fraunhofer line, Keith immediately picks it out as a clear match for the mountain range. That demonstrates a true command of visual-spacial awareness. 

Verbal-linguistic: “Using words effectively. These learners have highly developed auditory skills and often think in words. They like reading, playing word games, making up poetry or stories. They can be taught by encouraging them to say and see words, read books together. Tools include computers, games, multimedia, books, tape recorders, and lecture.” (same source)

Evidence: Keith’s funny comment that, “I don’t think you’re using that word correctly,” seems to imply that he’s able to catch onto the meaning of unfamiliar words pretty easily. But more indicatively–“they can be taught by encouraging them to say and see words.” Words hold a certain power with Keith, as evidenced by the way he reverts to repeating Shiro’s mantra of “Patience yields focus,” whenever he needs to calm down and concentrate. He finds comfort in those words and hearing them. This seems to suggest an auditory inclination. 

Logical-mathematical: “Reasoning, calculating. Think conceptually, abstractly and are able to see and explore patterns and relationships. They like to experiment, solve puzzles, ask cosmic questions. They can be taught through logic games, investigations, mysteries. They need to learn and form concepts before they can deal with details.” (same source)

Evidence: Again, I think “exploring patterns and relationships,” falls under the work we see on Keith’s conspiracy theory board. And as previously stated, his rank at the garrison is most likely indicative of this. He’s also capable of abstract thinking–such as connecting with the desert’s “strange energy” as well as logic-based. The ability to put things together and “solve puzzles” is also clearly shown through how Keith is able to quickly address a situation and come to the right conclusion–such as how something wasn’t right on Naxzela and it’s connection to Voltron

 Bodily-kinesthetic: “Use the body effectively, like a dancer or a surgeon. Keen sense of body awareness. They like movement, making things, touching. They communicate well through body language and be taught through physical activity, hands-on learning, acting out, role playing. Tools include equipment and real objects.” (same source)

Evidence: I don’t think this one really needs to be explained, because Keith is just deftly skilled when it comes to movement. He’s very fluid, moves quickly, is light enough on his feet to dodge enemies and sidestep disaster. The way he flies Red Lion with focus on speed and agility is a direct parallel to this. And I think that, just focusing on Keith’s own ability, the way he navigates the debris field when his suit is damaged is an excellent illustration of this

Intrapersonal:  “Understanding one’s own interests, goals. These learners tend to shy away from others. They’re in tune with their inner feelings; they have wisdom, intuition and motivation, as well as a strong will, confidence and opinions. They can be taught through independent study and introspection. Tools include books, creative materials, diaries, privacy and time. They are the most independent of the learners.” (same source)

Evidence: Keith is often very independent and in tune with his own feelings. And we know from his whole personal quest to uncover more about his identity that he’s very much an introspective person. Intuition is also a huge part of who Keith is, and we see this manifest as a kind of quintessence sensitivity–how he was able to sense Blue in the desert, how he was the only one able to connect with his Lion over a long distance, knowing he had to target Haggar’s ship during the whole thing with Naxzela, ect. 

Naturalistic: Seems to encompass environmental awareness. Knowing the lay of the land, practical outdoor skills and intelligence, a deeper understanding of the natural world, a more nurturing personality, ect. 

Evidence: Keith living on his own in the desert for a year and later saying that he likes the outdoors because it’s quiet. Seems to be more in tune with the natural world and has more than enough of a grasp of outdoor knowledge to live off the land if need be. Also, does exhibit nurturing instincts–a fierce desire to protect and provide for others 

So yes, Keith is very smart and in a number of ways. And I will 100% always defend that

I love the idea of Lotor becoming that one character that the main heroes don’t see as a threat, but is an absolute pain in their asses. The only reason no one has kicked him off the ship yet is because he’s grown on them like a parasite.

I really hate to be the fandom wet blanket here but can we kinda not with the “It’s a joke that the paladins act like stereotypical high school drama bullies towards Lotor because he’s a Huge Nuisance in a way that he isn’t in canon”

Like first, your “that one character they don’t see as a threat” is a highly skilled fencer and pilot who gave Fricking Voltron a run for their money in a single-man fighter. And he’s fairly recently upgraded to a barrier-shattering ship on par with the capabilities of a Voltron Lion. So you’ve really got another thing coming if you think the team’s gonna just forget about that because Lotor’s cooperating now.

Especially when the reason this diplomacy is opening up is because Lotor just… saved all their lives. By making a precise shot, through a battlefield, to snipe the weapon attachment off an imperial battleship.

Whether or not Lotor is a major potential threat (he is) aside:

Yes Lotor and the paladins are going to have mutual animosity and mistrust towards one another because they’re both dangerous powerful people whose agendas have conflicted in the past. Not because Lance is going to flip his hair and go “ugh, Lotor, you can’t sit with us because you’re related to Zarkon.”

The only way I can see Lotor being a nuisance is if he was very specifically passive-aggressively trying to make a point in a context where it inconveniences but doesn’t endanger the paladins because his survival hinges on them. 

Also have you seen these guys. Pidge befriended a bunch of space caterpillars because they hung around her for more than ten minutes. Coran adopted five aliens that he’d never met before by the second episode and it took maybe half the first episode for Shiro to think of these people as “his team” and outright call them the same.

Lance determinedly wormed his way to being friends with Pidge despite Pidge frequently blowing him off (and Pidge is tactless as hell when she’s defensive), Keith has abandonment issues, and Allura really genuinely does want to hold onto positive pieces of her history and I think you’re kidding yourself if you think Lotor doesn’t have at bare minimum complicated feelings about Altea.

Hunk is skeptical of people when he actively has a reason to be but has also been shown to trust his teammates’ judgment (s2e9, with Keith, on the subject of Acxa) and pass up prior grudges like in season 4 when he was more ready to forgive Rolo and Nyma than Pidge was Beezer.

These guys’ friendship dial doesn’t go to zero. They might all think they’re settling in to long-term tolerate this guy for mutual benefit but sooner or later they’re going to be roping Lotor into playing video games with them.

I get why people are upset w/Lance's vlog. But what if he is just not meant to be THAT deep & really is there to be the funny, supportive guy. Bc thats what he is: a supporting character. I know fans want more but I just don't see them developing him deeper than he is. The majority of characters seem to already be developed & they have way too much plot to handle & questions to answer. Fans should also stop w/Lance being bi as canon bc he just isn't. Just love a character for who they are.

I mean, just myself personally though I really…don’t? The thing is, I think people just had very skewed expectations of what these blogs were supposed to be. And somehow, I think a lot of that goes back to Keith’s. I keep seeing people yell about how Keith got so much backstory in his while Allura and Lance didn’t, but you know what? That’s not what’s happening. Basically, the vlogs strike me as 1) recap and 2) getting to see more of these endearing characters that we love and hear their voice on some things in a one-on-one setting. Kind of like a glimpse into “a day in the life of” stories. So when people get mad because “Keith got more character development in this 2 minute clip then he did in 3 or 4 seasons!! Why didn’t anyone else get that!?”

I just…don’t understand that line of thought. Because the things is, Keith’s vlog isn’t new information. All of it is implied, and it’s right there laid bare in the narrative. If people didn’t realize what he was going through until he outright said it, then that’s on them. But animation is very much a medium of show not tell, all those elements to Keith’s story were already there. This isn’t news. So when people want others to get the “character development” Keith did in his vlog? It’s kinda bizarre to me, because that wasn’t what happened really. 

Keith’s vlog is really just him outright speaking about his personal issues. But you know what? He’s a character with lots of walls up, so of course it makes sense that he’d only say a lot of these things in a medium where it’s just him and he can safely vent. And I’ve said this before, but Lance clearly doesn’t have the same kind of baggage and tragic backstory that he does. He likes performing and talking about himself, so of course he’s going to respond differently from Keith, you know?

And what really bothers me is–I see people saying how Lance’s was completely shallow. But then, in the same breath, mention “they could’ve talked about his bond with Keith!!” And just–why? Why is Lance’s character development in relation to Keith somehow deeper or more genuine than what he has with Allura? Particularly when it was Allura who passed on the Red Lion to him, Allura who said he was worthy of being the Red Paladin. And it’s Lance in turn that Allura looks to for guidance, that she finds comfort in and starts to open up to. 

Lance quite literally went from being shallow and flirting with her at every opportunity to really becoming friends and turning into someone so supportive of Allura, it’s his belief in her that literally triggers Voltron’s newest power. They’ve come to genuinely care for one another and have a bond built on mutual trust and compassion, and when Lance runs to Allura to help her up in season 4? She doesn’t pull away like in season 1. They’re in a much different, much better place now, where they’re truly falling into sync with one another. And that is a drastic difference from day one. The guy has really grown and matured here. 

Lance’s vlog talked about how he developed as a character. Just not in the way people seemed to want.

I choose a hippo Lance: A what?!! How are you gonna fit a hippo in a pod?? Keith: *shrugs* Allura never said there was a size limit. And anyway hippos are cool, I could ride it into battle. Also they’re super deadly, I bet Zarkon’s forces wouldn’t last 5 minutes against a hippo Pidge: Alright then, moving on! I love turtles but they’re kinda slow and wouldn’t be very useful. Also I’m with Shiro, I want something that would actually fit in the pod (*side-eyes Keith*) and could keep up with me. An owl. Owls are super smart and silent, it’d make the perfect spy. On Writing Voltron’s Slav So we’re coming in on season 3 and I’ve noticed that, despite Slav being surprisingly popular amongst fans, he isn’t included in much fanfic. It’s been brought to my attention that maybe people are worried about writing him in an inadvertently offensive way. Since people react pretty positively to how I write him, I thought I’d put together a character analysis/writing guide on how to write Slav while still being respectful.
