Title: Have fun, be careful

Materials: Steel rebar, steel angles, pool noodles, zip ties, and bendy straws.

Statement:

For this sculpture, I wanted to experiment with water and steel since they are two contrasting materials that don't often interact with each other. Thinking about making a sculpture as an extension of existing architecture, I decided to concentrate on my pool railing. I took measurements of the existing railing and replicated that shape with the steel by bending and welding it. I then attached the pool noodles and straws in a random and playful manner using zip ties.

When I was younger my dad would warn me not to run around the pool railing because I could get hurt. I found it interesting that an item that was supposed to be helpful could cause more harm than help. Considering that, I made my piece a barrier around the stairs. I had hostile design in mind but wanted to take a more playful expression of it. Everything and anything can be dangerous and as a child, you are oblivious to this danger and rarely want to listen to warnings. My piece is representative of the contrast between what is safe and dangerous, what looks fun and inviting but is something to be cautious of, and a parent versus a child's point of view. I'm sure someone could still hurt themselves with my barrier, but that adds to the point. Nothing is ever going to be 100% safe, it is all about how we respect space and architecture.

Title: Growing Pains

Materials: Wood, Pantyhose, Thread, Door Knobs, Yarn

Dimensions: (H: 75in, L:56in, W:33 ½ in)

Statement of Intent:

When I first began this project, I looked back on my life and tried to remember a time when I felt settled in a home environment. Unfortunately, I realized that I use to move a lot, since I was a small baby up to when I was a young adult due to the decisions of those around me. I noted that when I was a baby, packing up and moving did not seem like a big deal; partly, because my memory seemed so fleeting and also, I was still learning the concepts of what it means to create connections. As I got older, it became harder to just move away from a certain location since I finally understood the significance of what I was leaving behind. I constantly had to start over in making friends and being able to feel comfortable in the space that I was in. It felt like there was no space for me, no inside or outside that I could call mine. That is what I wanted to showcase with this piece. I sewed pantyhose into the wooden frames that are intersecting with one another; starting from small to big, I burned the pantyhose in order to create a dissipating feel to the fabric. The intensity of the burned fabric would slow down as it goes down the line, meaning that less holes would appear as it nears the biggest frame at the end. This is to show the struggle I had as I got older to just pack up and leave because a barrier would begin to form, making it hard for me to easily rip the material.

Title: Cornering the Perspective of You

Materials: Wood, Pantyhose, Thread, Paint

Statement of Intent:

For this performance piece, I wanted to corner people’s perspectives of themselves when they look in a mirror. When most people stand in front of a mirror, I feel like they are focused on the negative self-aspects they may see in the physical sense that by having people come up and focus on a single task, I am redirecting their mental focus because now they may be having trouble invading the personal autonomy of someone they can sense behind the sheer barrier. The overall task was to compel people to find the corners of their body while they use the black paintbrush to paint corners on the subject (my body) behind the pantyhose curtain. I decided to place myself behind this curtain because I wanted a sense of anonymity; where people could make out the contour of my body, but not feel watched. From what I learned in this experience, is that most people felt like they had to be cautious with where they placed the paintbrush and that they were pushing past the personal bubble of somebody. In the end, I feel like the overall performance was successful because people were not focused on themselves anymore; instead they felt mentally immobilized to be wary of another person.
