what she’s thinking: in general, wasteland baby isn’t just about sex for the sake of horniness and gratification. hozier very intentionally avoids lyrics that would objectify or degrade his hypothetical partner in any way and tries to remain gender neutral as much as possible to keep his music inclusive and relatable to all, regardless of sexual orientation and gender, and he does this not to claim superficial Woke points or as a marketing strategy, but because of the overarching theme of the album. the songs on the album are about making love in a genuine sense with an emphasis on love and how in a time so turbulent and fraught with war and hatred and inhumanity and cruelty, it’s important that we find ways to celebrate our humanity and ability to connect with one another through love and spirituality.
