i wanted to be polite and righteous so i sent an ask over to @/underfell, defernull's creator, to ask if i can use their (<- couldn't find their pronouns) AU for my spam dating sim game

at first i didn't intend to do that, but i kept thinking about @/spedles roleswap au spamton (which is my favorite iteration of swap spamton), and i thought "hmmm adding roleswap spam could be fun, i do want to send them a message to be sure it's chill to use his au like that"

then i realised—why the heck do i feel compelled to ask spedles and not vic (underfell/defernull's creator)????? it's not because defernull is more popular and mainstream in the fandom that it's more okay to take without asking???? they're just as much of a creator as anyone else????

i love to headcanon every darkner as non-binary

because the binary framework with which we talk about gender is profoundly human—and darkners clearly do not abide by that logic, as they are objects

like even spamton, a character which transitioned from androgyny to masculinity (addison to spamton) if you asked him what his gender is he would say something like "salesman"—because that's how they conceive identity, through roles and utilities, not a binary man/woman or escaping this said binary through non-binarity

(which also makes the song "a real boy" even more interesting through that lens)

that's also why i love headcanoning tenna as pangender—that tv will be every gender he can, because you can be anything you want on tv! he's an actor, he can be and embody any and all gender he wants! and darkners do not have a separation between their role and their "real" selves like we humans do—an actor irl doesn't have to be the gender they play as because we have this distinction between the character and the human being—but darkners don't have that luxury

and finally, that's why it's so interesting regarding ralsei!! his whole arc is about the conflict between their role as the dark prince and who he wants to be—paralleled by susie who is also a hero but on her own terms and with her own ways. ralsei sees how susie and kris manage their roles as heroes and he has to face the fact that he fundamentally can't be the same as them—because they are their own person outside of their role in the dark world, and ralsei is not.

i'm really excited to see how this will evolve in the last two chapters!!
