“I stopped speaking. There was no point trying to argue. There was no way they were going to even attempt to listen to me.
They never do, do they? They never even try to listen to you.”

Regulus has suffered from selective mutism since childhood. The trait developed during his early years, and he relied on Sirius to do most of the talking for him. Sirius and Kreacher heard more from Regulus than Orion and Walburga ever did. His parents were one of the main triggers for his freezing and/or shutting down completely when it came to communicating. Regulus’ silence was viewed as a positive thing, so the parents didn’t bother to see if anything was wrong with him. He mastered nonverbal spells during his first year at Hogwarts and was enrolled for nearly a year and a half before the professors heard his voice.
Reg was almost a hat stall. The first suggestion had been Gryffindor like Sirius and was immediately shut down. It took three minutes for the hat to pick between Ravenclaw and Slytherin, ultimately taking the child’s nagging about being like the rest of the family into account.
Regulus got the dark mark the summer before his seventh year. There was no choice on the matter, and it was done for the sake of appeasing his father. He came across the book on Horcruxes while perusing the library, uncertain of where they came from since they hadn’t been there the days before. Regulus had them read cover to cover and thought little about the information until the day Voldemort asked to borrow Kreacher.
If he finds out Dumbledore used Kreacher to find more Horcruxes, he’s going to be mad so best not to mention it. The elf was one of the only beings that seemed to care about him before his presumed demise.
Drowning was once a fear of Regulus’, with his welcoming death like an old friend once beneath the surface. Self-sacrifice hadn’t exactly been part of his plan and surviving the ordeal certainly wasn’t. He has night terrors of the bony grip of the inferi and the burning feeling of trying to inhale water, often waking up in a cold sweat.
Regulus believed he was better off believed dead than deemed a survivor, knowing the Dark Lord would not be forgiving. Going incognito was the only option since he felt helpless enough to know going back home would be damning. A little extreme perhaps, but being a teen, depressed, under more stress than he could handle, and the near-death situation left him needing an escape from it all.
He settled in a small town on the coast of Italy and worked at an apothecary. Luka was the name he gave when asked, but there was little other information to be given. Regulus grew his hair out and charmed it blond as a way of blending in.
The death of his parents was a requirement for returning. He had nothing to do with that, but there was no way he was returning to the very people that made him feel voiceless, helpless, etc. News spread slowly and the only thing that had him considering reappearing was acknowledging things were quiet enough to not need to fear a killing curse thrown his way for setting foot back home.
