“You would think a library would invest in some decent chairs, huh? Students seem to live here during exam seasons so it would only make sense.” Carol flashed a brief smile when the girl apologised for her rambling. “Hey, that’s okay. Good to meet you, Stephanie. I’m Carol.”

He had recognized her almost immediately. He’d dated Billy for too long not to recognize famous superheroes on sight, and he was a big Captain Marvel fan anyway. Meeting Carol Danvers now was made infinitely more weird by the fact that he now knew the original Captain Marvel was his father. 

Carol shook her head. “No, I don’t think I have any real reason to punch you. Besides, I don’t think me going around, smashing things - or people - would do any good.” She needed to remain calm, no matter how difficult it was. 

Her hand travelled to rub the back of her neck, her eyes still scanning the street as if looking for something. A way to deal with her frustrations. “Were you here when it happened?” She was desperate to discuss the situation with anyone but had no idea how to go about doing it.

“What’s with all the assholes lined up down the streets?” Rocky asked the person next to her while she held the recently bought cold pack to her bruised cheek. She’d missed out on the riots, but she would’ve taken being in the middle of a mob over battling Blackheart any day. “Honestly though, could they look any more pretentious?” She glared up at the National Guardsmen.

“I recommend you get used to it. I feel like they’re not going anywhere anytime soon.” The look on Carol’s face was a mix of sheer disgust and equally unadulterated anger. The frustrations had been building up for good few days now, causing the blonde to live in a constant state of annoyance. “People have been rioting. Said assholes are apparently trying to keep things peaceful.”

With everything happened, she wasn’t paying much attention. Her mind was somewhere else, it was in another place. Everything that had been happening was horrible. It was happening so fast, and she felt helpless. She didn’t see the person until she ran right into them, luckily she had grown to be able to control her gift. Thankfully she didn’t pass through this person. “I am so sorry.” 

It was almost as if the entirety of Star City had taken up the activity of walking into Carol. With folks bumping into her wherever she went, it certainly felt like it. However, she couldn’t exactly blame there people; they were upset and clearly preoccupied by their racing thoughts. That was understandable. “It’s alright. Happens to the best of us,” she assured. “How are you, Kitty?”

“That’s not a lead-in to saying I’ll do, I hope,” he volunteered, more to draw attention to himself than anything else. “I know, I know- tragically both with a punchable face and all that, but even so, I’d rather not.”

He gestured with an open palm in front of himself, as though displaying a ghastly deformity and not just a pale, pointy, rather good-looking face.

“I don’t know. Could be a fun fight. But maybe not.” She shouldn’t be punching anyone, not when the public was already wary of those with superpowers, let alone go around picking fights with the likes of Loki. 

She rolled her eyes, arms folded across her chest. “Couldn’t afford causing any harm to that face of yours.”

“Well, you’re not the first person to fall asleep in the library. They’re so peaceful and quiet, so basically perfect for a quick nap,” she pointed out and looked around as if trying to make her point. It was quiet. “You’re okay then?”

Lorna laughed at her joke. She listened to Carol and nodded. “It’s so good to get what you want isn’t it? And when you get it you have the feeling that your mission is done and a happiness spread through your body” she said and smile at Carol. “So did you find more heroes here besides me?” she asked looking at the girl trying to set up a conversation.

“It’s the best feeling in the world.” Admittedly the joy of it all had been dampened by the hero ban and the way the general public viewed their efforts. However, no one could take flight away from her and that was enough to keep her grateful when everything else was crumbling apart. “I have my friends, people I knew long before the ban was put in place. Some of them live around here.”

Donna let out a chuckle. “You are worst than me giving an advice” she said still chuckling. “But I guess you are right. Time heals everything,right?” she said more confident. “My love life is a shit so we can change the subject?” she asked looking at Carol.

“I am pretty bad, yeah. Sorry about that.” Carol could be helpful but sometimes connecting with more emotional matters seemed near impossible, perhaps due to her own past. “It usually does. But that doesn’t mean you’re not allowed to be sad,” she added hurriedly, hoping her choice of words could be seen as somewhat comforting. “Sure. That’s a good idea. I, um, what do you like doing around the city? Any hobbies?”

“Raven,” the blonde spoke almost carefully, the greeting followed by a nod. Raven was an enigma and Carol didn’t know what to make of her, no matter how hard she tried. “Coffee sounds good,” she finally admitted, willing to put her own uneasiness aside. “Yeah, let’s go.”

“Coffee spills aren’t exactly the greatest of things, yet, they still happen anyway like most unfortunate things,” he stated, turning and tossing his empty coffee cup into a nearby garbage can, “I probably smell like a caramel latte now, but that’s okay, it’s better than smelling like sweat. Perhaps you will avoid it.” He lightly pulled his shirt away from his chest, trying to make it so it wouldn’t stick to him. “I can’t exactly keep up with Steve, so I do not believe that I would be a good candidate as your running partner. Maybe you could ask Steve himself?” He said with a chuckle before he listened to her. “Plane testing sounds fun. Yeah, work is keeping me plenty busy, don’t worry about me.”

“But they can be avoided. I do have better hobbies than being the cause of coffee spillages. At least I like to think I do.” Well, there was plenty of Star Wars and Star Trek for her to watch, that was something. “Hey, that sounds pretty nice, actually. I do love the smell of coffee so I guess I’m a bit biased. It’s the one thing I really miss when I’m up in space. Is that harsh?” she questioned, very much joking. “I could ask Steve, yeah. Maybe I will. I’m kind of amazed I haven’t tried to race him before,” Carol admitted with a hint of genuine bewilderment in her voice. “Mmhm, it’s sort of the best. You sure? How’s work then? Is it at least interesting?”

“That’s just given, isn’t it? I mean, don’t get me wrong, Batman has some fantastic toys but is that going to be enough when you’re going head-to-head with someone like Superman? I don’t think so.” Carol shook her head, clearly very serious about the discussion.

He walked a few more steps before stopping and looking up at the sky. “How far are these bagels? I have heard that Captain Marvel can fly. Why do we walk on the ground as if there is no choice in it?” 

“You’re not wrong,” Carol muttered, mostly to herself. The man would most definitely garner looks, no matter his clothing. “I am sure they can handle it. Well, I hope so. Who knows what they’re capable of dealing with nowadays.” She had no idea but she was quite eager to find out. 

A delighted grin spread across her features when the subject of flight was brought up. “Most people don’t love the idea of me dragging them about in air. Apparently they find it dangerous and frightening. Then again, you’re clearly not most people.” She nodded her head firmly. “As long as you don’t mind being carried by a woman. Some men find that embarrassing.” She didn’t exactly care for those men.

Lorna still have a hope on her heart that Alex still alive. “So uh I was going to change the subject but I really don’t know what to talk about” she chuckle. “Tell me more about you” Lorna states looking at the blonde.

Carol decided against commenting on Lorna’s situation, slightly worried she would end up saying something dumb or insensitive without even realising it. “Oh, alright. I do love talking about myself,” she stated jokingly. “Well, I grew up in Boston and joined the Air Force when I was eighteen. I always wanted to fly. I guess you could say I got exactly what I wanted. Don’t really need a plane anymore.”
